Habitat

The jackpotalope’s home range is restricted to Wyoming, however anyone who holds a jackpotalope license (lottery ticket) in their possession is able to pursue this elusive creature. The jackpotalope is thought to thrive in a broad range of habitats. Confirmed sightings have occurred in grasslands, alpine regions, urban areas, gas stations, bowling alleys, living rooms, bars, cubicles, and even, on a few rare occasions, the UW basketball court. So keep your eyes peeled — you never know where he’ll be.

Habits

The most distinguishing behavioral characteristic of the jackpotalope is its elusive nature. However, this relatively docile creature has presented itself to a lucky few. Although no aggressive tendencies have been observed or reported, jackpotalope hunters are advised to use caution when approaching the creature. Anecdotal evidence suggests that displaying the peace sign with both hands raised over the head and the right leg extended outward may calm a startled jackpotalope.

The Hunters

Jackpotalope hunting is open to anyone and everyone 18 years of age or older. While many delight in scouting alone, tracking the jackpotalope in groups can provide added joy and excitement.

The leader of a group or pool of hunters is referred to as the “Jackpot Guide.” The role of this individual is to monitor the size of the lottery jackpots for his or her squad of “Jackspotters” (pool members) and encourage them to buy hunting licenses (lottery tickets).

Building a Blind

A blind is essential for those jackpotalope hunters who

prefer the ambush technique to the stalk. Although commercially

manufactured blinds are widely used when hunting other species, they have no place on a serious jackpotalope hunt. Rather, blinds constructed solely of Wyoming materials are de rigueur for the modern jackpotalope hunter.

Stalking

Given the inherently wary nature of the jackpotalope, a stealthy approach is recommended. However, if hooting and hollering brings you good luck you can do that too. In the field, the hunter must move slowly and deliberately, being mindful to avoid startling the creature. Humming, singing, belching or flatulence that exceeds 63.5 decibels could result in an unsuccessful stalk. A ghillie suit embellished with native flora is an effective addition to the stalker’s kit.

Calling

The jackpotalope has a highly developed sense of hearing. Able to pick up sounds across a broad range of frequencies, the elusive creature is known to be especially attracted to the sound of a kazoo.

The most effective kazoo technique for calling jackpotalopes into range has proven to be a falsetto rendition of the Queen classic, “Bohemian Rhapsody” played in 14/16 time. Alternatively, blowing across a blade of grass held firmly between the thumbs reproduces the high-pitched jackpotalope mating call, which more often than not proves highly effective in drawing in the elusive jackpotalope.
