On 16 February 2016 the Australian population reached 24 million people Waste generation rates are a function of population growth the level of urbanisation and per capita income[i] and Australians now produce about 50 million tonnes of waste each year averaging over 2 tonnes per person

Australians produce an estimated 140000 tonnes of e-waste each year but only about 4 is recycled

So much of the waste is caused by one off usage of plastics such as plastic bags drinking straws and other small items

Australia is one of the highest producers of waste per head of population in the world (behind the average American) In 1999 Australia ranked second behind the USA in terms of domestic waste generation

Landfill The cost of disposing waste at Australian landfills can often climb up to A$1 05 per tonneshyexpenditure that usually always finds its way back to councils businesses and families

To compound this issue the National Waste Data Report reveals that while Australias population rose by 22 per cent from 1997 to 2012 waste generation soared by 145 per cent This has forced most state and territory governments to introduce a landfill levy for councils and companies These costs are ultimately funnelled down to the rate payer
