The landmark Santa Monica Pier, soft, sandy beaches, miles of bike paths, and the sunlight-bathed eateries and hotels of Ocean Avenue add up to a quintessentially California scene. BY ELIZABETH JENKINS
A long Ocean Avenue, open-air restaurants, pastel-hued hotels, palm-lined Palisades Park and the distinctive Tongva Park provide enviable beachfront hangouts. Ocean Front Walk, home of the Original Muscle
Beach, still flexes its charm with a collection of rings, parallel bars, and balance bars plied by bodybuilders, yogis, and other assorted sun-worshippers. Bikes, skateboards (and, yes, even hoverboards) drift down the Marvin Braude Bike Trail in an aimless procession of fun. Perched over the Pacific, the 107-year Pier, featuring the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel and the century-old Looff Hippodrome, attracts more than seven million visitors a year, each reveling in a delectable slice of West Coast nostalgia.

eat The Pier and Ocean Avenue offer a cuisine for every palate—from Mexican and Italian to seafood and cotton candy. The Lobster (1602 Ocean Ave, 310-458-9294, thelobster.com)
features floor-to-ceiling ocean views, plus a raw bar and fresh seafood dishes, including its namesake catch prepared numerous ways. Top Chef finalist Brian Malarkey’s spacious ocean-to-table concept Herringbone (1755 Ocean Ave, 310-971-4460, herringboneeats.com) offers whole fish ceviche, stone crab, and a “salt and brine” bar, with everything from octopus to charcuterie. If you’re craving a burger and fries, hit up Pier Burger (330 Santa Monica Pier, 310-587-2747, pierburger.com) for a nostalgic-feeling experience complete with flat-top-griddled Angus beef and delicious custards. Just below the Pier, Big Dean’s Oceanfront Café (1615 Ocean Front Walk, 310-393-2666, bigdeansoceanfrontcafe.com) traces its Santa Monica roots to 1902. And judging by the legions of die-hard fans, the classic beach-going fare of burgers, dogs and wings are tasty enough to keep them returning for another century (or two).
shop Geek out on Pier history or memorialize your visit with an official tote bag, hooded sweatshirt, or T-shirt from the Santa Monica Pier Shop and Visitor Information
Center (200 Santa Monica Pier, santamonica.com), located on the Pier in the carousel building. Celebrate the 90th anniversary of Route 66 at 66 to Cali (200 Santa Monica Pier, 818-599-0972, 66tocali.com), a shrine to all things Route 66, which officially ends in Santa Monica. Everything sold in the store is made in the USA, from authentic road signs and guidebooks to T-shirts and shot glasses. Authentic souvenirs of a more natural variety can be snapped up in Oatman Rock Shop (321 Santa Monica Pier, 310-394-0780, oatmanrockshop.com). Dating to 1965, this Pier fixture has supplied beachgoers with a gorgeous assortment of local sea shells, along with a mesmerizing collection of crystals and jewels.
play Arguably Santa Monica’s selfie capital, Palisades Park (smgov.net) is a 26-acre bluff-top oasis of manicured lawns overlooking the beach from Ocean Avenue.
Between Palisades and Colorado Avenue, there is a walking path, as well as numerous picnic benches, any of which are ideal for capturing
“like-worthy” sunsets and posting your way to social media fame. The Annenberg Community Beach House (415 Pacific Coast Highway, 310-458-4904, beachhouse.smgov.net) opened in 2009, and is spread out over five acres that include a playground, splash pad, beach volleyball courts, and the Marion Davies Guest House, which was designed in the 1920s by Julia Morgan, the Hearst Castle architect. Pacific Park (380 Santa Monica Pier, 310-260-8744, pacpark.com) is the only amusement park located on a Pier on the West Coast and features a dozen rides, including the world-famous Pacific Wheel. If you’ve always wanted to soar through the air, take a class at the Trapeze School New York (370 Santa Monica Pier, 310-394-5800, losangeles.trapezeschool.com), or simply watch an aerial show. But don’t forget to look below! The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium (located beach-level, below the Pier, 310-393-6149, healthebay.org), located underneath the Carousel building, is home to more than 100 species of marine life and includes touch tanks and knowledgeable volunteers. For a more intimate sea-life encounter, cast a line into the Pacific; you can fish anywhere along the Pier, no license required.

The downtown area really is an entertainment hub for Santa Monica, thanks to the farmers markets, restaurants, bou-tiques, bars, and movie theaters that line the streets. BY ELIZABETH JENKINS
Just steps from the Pier, Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade consists of three open-air, car-free blocks that are anchored by upscale Santa Monica Place. With everything from fresh farmers market produce to designer
fashions, Downtown Santa Monica is a shopper’s nirvana. Likewise, foodies rejoice with numerous restaurants featuring locally sourced ingredients and craft cocktails. Around each corner, life pulses with hotel guests, street performers, shoppers, office workers, diners, barflies, and moviegoers. New to the mix: The terminus of the Metro Expo Line, which ferries riders by light rail between Santa Monica and Downtown Los Angeles.

eat Family-owned northern Italian restaurant Locanda del Lago (231 Arizona Ave, 310-451-3525, lagosantamonica.com) has delighted customers with its authentic cuisine—such as
tagliatelle alla Bolognese—since 1991. For more Italian flavor, head to Stickhouse (223 Broadway, 424-744-8531 stickhousegelato.com) for gelato or fruit sorbet on a stick, plus gelato bonbons, cakes, and pops. Design your own heart-healthy meal at Sweetgreen (1343 Fourth St, 424-744-8321, la.sweetgreen.com), or select from locally sourced menu items such as the Rad Thai, with organic arugula and citrusy shrimp, or the Kale Caesar, loaded with roasted chicken and fresh lime. Sonoma Wine Garden (395 Santa Monica Place, Suite 300, 424-214-4560, sonomawinegarden.com) evokes the feel of a wine-country picnic thanks to a lush rooftop deck, which happens to boast ocean views. Mediterranean-inspired dishes feature local organic produce, while the wine list is stacked with Sonoma and Napa Valley favorites.

shop With its unique restaurants and beloved chains like Lululemon, Converse, and Banana Republic (just to name a few),the pedestrian-only, outdoor shopping
district Third Street Promenade (downtownsm.com), is a bona fide destination. But the surrounding streets also hold specialty boutiques worth seeking out—retailers like Design Within Reach and Goorin Bros., are just around the corner. At the southern end of Third Street, the open-air Santa Monica Place (395 Santa Monica Place, 310-260-8333, santamonicaplace.com) comprises nearly 100 shops, from Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom to Tory Burch and Tiffany & Co. A concierge service will even deliver your shopping bags back to your hotel. Nearby on Fifth Street, local favorite Ron Robinson (1327 Fifth St, 310-458-1160, ronrobinson.com) woos customers to its iconic storefront, offering a plethora of men’s, women’s, and children’s attire, along with coveted designer brands.
Explore the city on wheels with a two-hour, half-day, or full-day bike rental from Santa Monica Bike Center (1555 Second St, 310-656-8500, smbikecenter.com),
or reserve one of the center’s city tours focused on urban farming or street art. Step into 106-degree heat at Sweat Yoga (702-A Arizona Ave, 310-230-5225, sweat-yoga.com), a music-driven, athletic studio where you’re guaranteed to get your heart pumping. Afterward, stroll the Promenade and marvel at the multitude of street performers, or pull up a bench for some good-old-fashioned people watching. Prepare to laugh at hidden gem M.i. Westside Comedy Theater (1323-A Third Street Promenade, 310-451-0850, westsidecomedy.com), where veterans like Judd Apatow, Chris Tucker, and Howie Mandel have all dropped by. At the Santa Monica History Museum (1350 Seventh St, 310-395-2290, santamonicahistory.org), peruse interactive exhibits like the touch screen “Then and Now” display. Visitors can also explore a replica interior of a Donald Douglas aircraft. And on Saturdays, Santa Monica Conservancy (310-496-3146, smconservancy.org) offers fascinating, two-hour walking tours, which illuminate more than 130 years of SoCal history. Topics range from film lore and architecture to an old saloon that served as the town’s first city hall. DowntownSM.com

L ike the tides of the Pacific just a few blocks away, Main Street is characterized by a slow shift in personalities: By day, it’s a favorite of the up-at-dawn locals, who come for breakfast or coffee after a sunrise surf session.
An eclectic collection of laid-back, patio-lined cafés, indie boutiques, and relaxed (and relaxing) salons can easily fill an afternoon for almost any visitor. In the evening, trendy restaurants and watering holes glow with a lively mix of options for nightlife lovers.

Stretching for 10 blocks, this tree-lined street’s shopping district is filled with popular eateries, juice bars, upscale boutiques, and a historic theater. BY ELIZABETH JENKINS
M ontana Avenue’s stretch of over 150 restaurants and boutiques on the city’s northern edge sits just a short walk from Downtown Santa Monica, yet feels removed from the hustle and bustle of the Promenade
and Pier. Late night options may be limited, but from sunrise to sunset, a steady stream of shoppers browse the surrounding storefronts amid a relaxed crowd of parents pushing strollers, A-list celebrities and out-of-towners, none of whom seem in a hurry to leave the wealth of juice bars, latte vendors, and outdoor cafés.

Culture abounds on this lively strip—in the form of street art, international cuisine, a weekly farmers market, and the sands of Santa Monica State Beach. BY ROBIN JONES
S tretches of Pico Boulevard, a main artery connecting Santa Monica to Downtown Los Angeles, have begun to look more like an art exhibition as of late: The local business improvement district, paired with nonprofit
Beautify Earth, have adorned buildings here with a variety of striking murals. The people bustling through the area are equally diverse, drawn to a mix of small galleries, live music venues, shops, and ethnic restaurants tempting almost any palette. Accessible from the three Metro Expo Line stations in town and bordered by cornerstones like Santa Monica High School, Santa Monica College, and Virginia Avenue Park—home to a beloved Saturday farmers market—a youthful spirit pervades along Pico Boulevard.

eat The Madison at Reds (707 Pico Blvd, 310-310-8181, redspizza.la) may be the most unusually delicious pizza in town. An authentic Swedish pie, it’s topped with white
garlic sauce and herbed rotisserie ground beef—like a kebab on a pizza. Lares Restaurant (2909 Pico Blvd, 310-829-4550, lares-restaurant.com) has been serving up burritos and tacos since 1968, alongside traditional Mexican specialties like birria (lamb stew) and camarones a la diabla (shrimp wrapped in bacon and dipped in spicy sauce). With classic and quirky movies projected on its loft-like walls, The Upper West (3321 Pico Blvd, 310-586-1111, theupperwest.com) puts its twist on the classic dinner and a movie date night. Look for specialty cocktails and modern American cuisine—everything from crispy ahi tacos to miso-glazed duck and gourmet grilled cheese.

UNURBAN COFFEE HOUSE
shop Be sustainable at The Colleagues (3312 Pico Blvd, 310-396-7349, thecolleagues.com), where much of the gently used women’s and men’s clothing, jewelry, shoes and
housewares for sale are designer or vintage, not to mention you can also snag decorative arts and home goods. La Vie Parisienne (1837 Lincoln Blvd, 310-392-8428, lavieparisienne.com) serves as a showroom for jeweler Catherine Popesco, who uses early-20th-century Parisian inspirations to make eye-catching earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and pins. On Saturdays, big crowds gather for the Virginia Avenue Park Farmers Market (2200 Virginia Ave, Sat 8 a.m.–1 p.m.), known as a favorite among several area chefs for its deep selection of fresh seafood. Inside tip: A free bike valet makes it easy to arrive sans car.
play Like the coffee houses in college towns, Unurban Coffee House (3301 Pico Blvd, 310-315-0056, unurban.com) is funky and friendly, with mismatched furniture and
décor, an art gallery, and live entertainment. McCabe’s Guitar Shop (3101 Pico Blvd, 310-828-4497, mccabes.com) is legendary not only for its killer instrument collection, but also for intimate concerts with a who’s-who roster of musicians like Beck, M. Ward, and Steve Earle, among others. Kelly Graval, an illustrator and graffiti artist known as RISK, opened Buckshot Gallery (3129 Pico Blvd, 310-310-8471, buckshotgallery.com) last year as a place where artists known for one thing (say, street art) can show a different type of work (say, oil paintings). Home of the Santa Monica Theatre Guild, the oldest theatrical group in the city, the Morgan-Wixson Theatre (2627 Pico Blvd, 310-828-7519, morgan-wixson.org) puts on five plays per season, along with shows for kids.

This centrally located enclave is home to a thriving arts scene and the newly opened Metro Expo Line. BY ROBIN JONES
T his emerging neighborhood—defined by two major thoroughfares, Wilshire and Olympic Boulevards—gets plenty of attention for its arts and entertainment offerings, particularly Bergamot Station’s galleries
and The Broad Stage’s shows, as well as top-notch restaurants. No wonder it’s home to a growing crop of interesting new restaurants and shops.

This bustling corridor is lined with restaurants, superb shopping, and a trio of parks, including Palisades Park at the western edge, a favorite for oceanic vistas. BY ELIZABETH JENKINS
S tretching 12 miles from Downtown Los Angeles to Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, Wilshire Boulevard is a kaleidoscope of California culture. You’ll find chef-driven dining hot spots by mom-and-pop bakeries, and generations-old Mexican
eateries neighboring Korean barbecues. A smattering of vintage and designer consignment stores make the whole strip a favorite for deal hunters. Join some locals at Douglas Park for a lawn bowling session, and then head to Palisades Park, located atop the bluffs and providing a virtual balcony for viewing classic beach sunsets.

The city’s southeastern most enclave is an up-and-coming desti-nation for diners and shoppers in the know. BY ELIZABETH JENKINS
E clectic, diverse, funky, happening—Ocean Park is all of the above, and more. Set at the southeastern edge of the city, and linked directly to the beach, Ocean Park Boulevard boasts an authentic local vibe, a crop of talked-about restaurants,
and “where did you get that?!” boutiques and shops. Accentuated by spacious Clover Park, the neighborhood is also home to the Santa Monica Airport and its dynamic aviation museum, the Museum of Flying. The airport’s observation decks, restaurants, eco-friendly gardens, and twice-monthly antiques market are also a big draw.
