“I believe water is the issue of the decade.”

34th Street, playing at Spotlight Theater with himself and 20 youngsters under the age of 10 as

actors. Jan Callagy reminded the Club of the December 10th Target (East Hills Mall) Christmas shopping spree for some lucky kids from Stella Hills Elementary. PP Carl Leech announced the next Diners Club dinner on December 13th. Secretary Carol Smith announced that David and Marti Lari are celebrating 15 years of wedded bliss. Mary Jo Pasek reminded members that raffle tickets for a beautiful basket would be going on sale to BBRC members to support the American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life”. (Just to see if MJP is reading her newsletter closely, the editor will buy $25 in tickets IF she calls or emails him on Thursday to seal the deal!) Mike Daniel reminded the Club of the Christmas Party at David and Melody Spalinger’s home this Friday. Please RSVP to Kristina Ricker to assure we have enough food. Julie Huffman did her good-Samaritan-thing returning Jerry Starr’s ”discarded” credit cards. Jim Bell ascended the podium as the Craft Talker of the Day. However, Jim made his job easy as he had put his vocational, managerial and thespian skills to work by creating an audio CD in which all Clear Channel Radio employees imparted heart-felt umbrages to their boss. Jim has offered to explain the reference to “big trucks and bicycle shorts” at the next meeting. PP Neil Walker announced his recent 4-day mini-vacation to Lake Havasu, and presented President Cecil with a commemorative coin from the London Bridge Rotary Club. The Fine Marshals (PPs Howie Wass and Bob Bryant) immediately swooped in demanding a similar gift to all club members lest a hefty fine be imposed. A hefty fine was imposed. While on a roll, the FMs attached their money-sucking tentacles to the fallen-from-grace Beacon guest editor, Mike Stepanovich. Most observant readers, such as Mary Jo Pasek, picked up on the faux pas in the last edition --- seems that Denise Haynes, new member and sister-in-law of Dr. Jeff Haynes, was described as the doc’s wife. It’s reported that real wife Cheryl later had a serious conversation with her bone-analyzing hubby. Not to go unheard, Denise suggested a bottle of Stepanovich’s wine might settle the foible. Mike, still hiding his head under the tablecloth, quickly upped the offer to a CASE of wine hoping to make

amends. (We’ll be looking for you at the party Friday night, Denise). FM Howie then tossed a potentially expensive monetary grenade in the direction of Greg Desme. Seems Greg’s business is relocating. Where, you ask? How many times did Howie repeat “near KW Realtors”?! FM Bobby ducked his duties as he did not wade in and fine his fellow FM for subterfuge advertising.

THE PROGRAM

Coming off the Clear Channel parody, Vince Fong “modulated” into the next segment of the meeting by introducing Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy (pictured), recently mysteriously relieved (stolen) of his Visa Gold Card that racked up $10,000 in Las Vegas charges. “Controlling identity theft is high on my legislative agenda . . . now I’m going to work harder!” Kevin quipped. He gave the audience some very informative and entertaining

facts about the state of California. Having recently toured China with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, we heard that 5 of China’s biggest agricultural products come from California. Kevin stated that California is the gateway to the huge market created by one billion China residents. California’s legislative handling of the economy was discussed. The good news – California’s revenue is up 15%. The bad news – expenditures are up 18%. California’s Delta system was reported to be in bad shape and in need of repair. “I believe water is the issue of the decade,” the Assemblyman stated. Regarding roads, he said, “If California is to grow, we need an infrastructure for the 21st century.” During the Q&A period, KHSD’s Dennis Scott complimented McCarthy for his work helping eliminate red tape that slows down school

construction. PP Howie Wass also offered kudos to Kevin for his successful efforts in bringing down Workers Compensation rates. “Workers Comp has helped generate jobs in California,” McCarthy stated, “but we need to go further.” The softball question of the day came from Doug Burns asking why his do-not-call telephone line received so many political calls during the last referendum. The answer - political and charitable organizations are exempt from the do-not-call list.

BBRC PANCAKE BREAKFAST By PP Jerry Starr

BATTER WAS UP! 0800 ON 11/19

THANK YOU TO:

• Mr. Roger Ross-Smith (friend of Jerry Starr) for the mobile grill that enabled us to have no waiting for the excellent Pancakes and Sausages — chef Roger, Joe Nunez and Greg Desme prepared on Roger’s grill! Joe even got the color right according to one comment from the Kitchen servers!

• After the big grill was shut down Kelsey Sill was the main griddler to keep up with the “late for breakfast” customers. Her Dad did ditto dandy dishwashing!

• Matt Gretlein and his buddy Bryan Crawford did a great job in the “dining room” with the “seconds” and “thirds” and the ARMY of youngsters who “plated and carried” were really solid help!

• To Gary and Karen Fachin--They had the supply side of the event very well planned and delivered!

• Cheryl and Julie of the CHW Education Center for giving us a place for Service above Self!
