Dear members, In challenging times, we have all witnessed selfless acts of courage and support. Not only by our city’s Police and Fire Department’s first responders who keep us safe... but by

family, friends and sometimes, total strangers. That is also what happens when communities, nations and the world unite to conquer a common threat. As a kid, I remember conversations with my grandparents and great-grandparents about challenging economic times.

Hardships were endured, yet they made it through. The dictionary defines the word mettle as a noun meaning, “...courage and fortitude.”

I have seen that mettle in many people over the years, but no more so than in the members of the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. Together, with the support of our families and our ABYC family, we will get through this, and share this experience with our own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our clubhouse is currently closed, but I encourage you to drop by your club and enjoy a quiet day on the Patio, or maybe catch up on those boat repairs that have been patiently awaiting your attention. May God bless you and keep you safe. Rick

Dear ABYC Family, ABYC is more than a clubhouse, boat ramp, and yard; we’re a community of people, sharing our passion for sailing and enjoying all the great friendships and camaraderie

along the way. During this challenging time, I’ve reached out to as many friends and family as I can, and

I’m also looking at the ABYC calendar and our upcoming events with fingers crossed. I know we all have to do our part right now in tamping down the spread of the coronavirus, but I’m still looking forward to our next Regatta, SAC party and BBQ at the club.

I hope this public health emergency doesn’t interrupt our lives too much longer and that everyone understands how difficult it is for your BODs to make the tough decisions we’re facing. As always, I want to thank you for your ongoing support of our club, and I look forward to seeing you as soon as the situation allows! Thank you, Stephen Mueller

Okay, I do not need to tell you how to wash your hands, so let’s look to the future. As you know many of the events planned for this near future have been postponed or cancelled. We are planning on having an opening day but not sure yet when. As we are

still on that program, we will have to spruce up the club. Again, we do not know exactly when we can assemble to get that done but still in the picture. One of the primary projects is to get a new countertop put in the serving area. To that end there will be a nice opportunity to learn how to do this for yourself. I for one will be installing an interior for our kitchen and it will come in handy to know what I am doing…as well as knowing who else I may be able to call on that knows as well.

Here is a website set up that you can sign up for your area of interest for the Spruce Up: Spring Spruce Up Sign Up Thank you for your patience, Dan DeLave

Volunteering at ABYC is a great way to meet new people, hang-out with friends, learn new skills, and help run top- notch events for which ABYC is famous – all while having fun! Many of our volunteer opportunities revolve around regattas and social activities. Here are some great opportunities to get involved at ABYC in the next couple months:

It’s unimaginable the current state of affairs our world is in. It’s hard to look back and report on what happened over the past month while such a serious issue is facing us all. It’s time to circle the wagons and take care of our love ones and our extended family and help keep them

safe and healthy. As we are bombarded with the 24-hour news cycle, we can take peace and comfort knowing that this will be behind us at some point. There are many positive things to look forward to once we get this behind us. The board and various committees are working hard rearranging the club calendar for the eventual reopening. We have the christening of the new Patience, Opening Day, the new/old Olympic Class Regatta (OCR) plus a very busy regatta and social schedule to look

forward In closing, I hope you, your families and loved ones are safe and healthy. The AP is up at the club, but racing had not been canceled. The AP will come down when it is safe and appropriate to do so. In the meantime, stay positive, stay healthy and reconnect with friends and family. Remember your extended ABYC family looks forward to seeing you soon. Mike

Not your typical membership report this month I’m afraid. While we have several new members to welcome and the overall status of membership remains steady, although low, this months report will focus somewhat on the difficulty of the current COVID 19 lockdown we all find ourselves in.

First off, however, we’ll focus on the good news. We want to welcome new regular members Chris Killian, Antonio Beltran, Mathew Kellenberg, and Jason Moore. New junior member Preston Woodworth also joins the ABYC family. Several new applicant and inquires are also in process. Despite the recent closure of all local beaches and parks, the ABYC grounds are not restricted although the building will remain closed until further notice. While we can’t really recommend leaving your respective safe-zones, I can assure you the BBQ and firepit are working very well. Just sayin… In all seriousness, we know there may be a lasting impact to membership volume as a result of the COVID 19 restrictions and possible financial hardship upon some of us as well. However, we hope ABYC continues to be a bright spot in our currently restricted lives whether through a physical place of retreat and comfort or simply through the extended family and communication with fellow members. Let’s hope this historic time is short lived and will be nothing more than a tough time we all got through together, or at least 6’ apart. As always, please feel free to contact me for club tours and any questions you may have. Mike Shea, Membership Director [email protected] (562) 900-0234

At the starting signal, Blue was on starboard tack to windward of Yellow, and Green was on

port tack approaching the pin. Blue and Yellow were both OCS. Yellow rounded the pin and bore away to gybe and restart. Green was now on a collision course with Yellow and bore away to avoid contact, but collided with Yellow amidships. Blue also returning to start, luffed to pass astern of Green, but 2-3 seconds after Green collided with Yellow, Blue’s boom caught Green’s backstay parting the backstay. Green retired from the race. Yellow and Blue started and finished the race. Yellow and Green protest. Green claimed that Yellow changed course and she was unable to keep clear. Yellow claimed she was on starboard and port was required to keep clear. How shou ld t he p ro tes t committee rule. See if you can figure out the relevant facts, conclusions and decision.

Our annual ABSF Fundraiser planned for March and then moved to May will need to be rescheduled again. Stay tuned for updates as we work on setting a new date. This was shaping up to be an outstanding event you won’t want to miss. The fundraiser will still be

aimed at raising funds for junior sailing and the Gibbs-Weis Olympic Campaign. The good news for the Gibbs-Weiss campaign with the Olympic postponement is that it gives them another year to train. Despite the disappointment with the Olympic postponement, Riley and Anna are keeping an optimistic view. Riley commented that he and Anna have only been together for 1 year and imagine what they can do with 2 years. Now that’s the winning spirit! Kevin Taugher

Sometimes the stars are perfectly aligned and things just fall into place. A number of months ago, maybe all the way back to 2019, I had a conversation with Jorge Suarez about having some Club ABYC Music Nights. Jorge said that it would be great to have more music nights at the Club but that they needed to be just impromptu “happenings.” I can’t

remember the exact words but there was also some mention from Mr. Suarez that if a music night was too planned that it would become more of a performance then a casual jam session. O.K., I took Jorge’s thoughts to heart. The Club calendar just noted “Happy Hour” for Friday, February 28. For the Thursday, February 27 “Weekly Reader” I asked Stacy to simply drop in a note that there was going to be an impromptu music night on Friday, and that people should “Bring down their instruments - guitars, ukuleles, harmonicas, your voice!” Also as promised we had the fireplace lit, the couches arrange all cozy and plenty of the yummy bar menu available. By golly, people did, and we even had a flute and a retired professional keyboard player who put our old piano through it’s paces! What a fun night that almost went into the wee hours of Saturday morning. Thank you to all of our musical members who made it a most memorable night. And, yes, we are going to have more surprise music nights...but, you’ll have to watch for them. Dana

While some raced to PV, Club ABYC had a little adventure of our own: Pirate’s Plunder! Our new member mixer brought in some new faces and some favorite ones.

Adorned in beads, armed with libations, members set off to have a great time. But wait! The catch! Nobody was allowed to say “sail”, “drink,” or “boat” or else they lost a strand of beads. You guessed it, hilarity ensued. Imagine these sailors trying to describe their weekend sailing plans or what repairs need to be done to their boat. Better yet, imagine them trying to order another drink from the bar! Even some of the juniors joined in; they ended up having the best hornswagglin’ skills and several walked off with the treasure: free bar food! Many thanks for everyone who participated, and even more thanks for the laughs and good times! Ahoy there Matey, welcome aboard! To ABYC, where the best drinks are poured Avast Ye! For there are rules to a game to meet new members and learn their names Protect yer booty, at all costs! Say the wrong word, and yer treasure is lost. Have the most loot from your hornswagglin’ ways? Winner of a prize, for grubs, you don’t pay. Melissa

Stay strong and Stay sailing Certainly we are all going through tough times now, and we all regret not being together in a few weeks as intended for the 2020 Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race. Our event was to have many new features, our entry lists were strong and growing, and we were looking forward to having a great race. And while now we face having to weather a storm for the near future, we look forward to the clear skies ahead that will allow us to bring to you a great 73rd edition next year.So mark your calendars now for April 23rd, 2021 and stay tuned for announcements from us in the summer months ahead.

Cal Maritime’s Offshore Sailing took first place in the Cal Maritime Invitational Intercollegiate Regatta last weekend at the Los Angeles Yacht Club for their 7th win in 12 Harbor Cup Regattas.Heading into the final day in second place Cal Maritime felt comfortable where they were. After four races on the first

day, the top five teams were nearly tied for every spot on the podium as it was any one of those teams’ race to win or lose at any moment. With the point spread being so close, it forced the Keelhaulers to focus on what they could control: boat handling, communication and intensity. The team had spent the prior two days ironing out all of the kinks and by day three were ready to enjoy the intensity of their sport with the confidence in their teammates. They were able to launch ahead of last year’s winner College of Charleston giving them their first Harbor Cup win since the 2016-2017 season and their seventh as a program. “I’m certainly impressed by this team specifically, as well as the two alternates who supported their teammates on the road,” said Head Sailing Coach Erin Sprague. “It is a young team that honestly hasn’t had much time on the water together in this configuration. Storm Brown, our helm, has an incredibly quiet style of leadership I truly admire. He is excellent at changing gears on the racecourse and react with class to just about anything that’s thrown at him.” Due to the tight scores throughout the event, it forced the team to isolate each race as its own feat rather than group them all together. “ In our sport, where an event can last two to five days at a time with cumulative scores, you can feel like you’ve already lost by the end of the day,” explained Sprague. “This particular event enforced the importance of racing one race at a time and tuning out the rest. Over the course of a multiple day event, this simple mindset can very much make up the difference between just being in the mix and solidifying a first place finish.”Our own Ryan Schack and Hailey Thompson are part of this crew!

answer #65mark’s rules

Review the following definitions and rules. Definitions, Mark-Room Rule 10, On Opposite Tacks Rule 15, Acquiring Right of Way

Rule 16.1, Changing Course Part 2 Section C Preamble Rule 22.1, Starting Errors; Taking Penalties; Backing a Sail Rule 62.1(b), Redress Rule 64.1(a), Decisions: Penalties and Exoneration Case 24 Yellow and Blue are both OCS and sailing towards the pre-start side of the starting line or one of its extensions after her starting signal to start, rule 22.1 requires them to keep clear of a boat not doing so until they are completely on the pre-start side. Between position 2 and position 3 Yellow and Blue cross the extension of the starting line and acquire right-of-way under rule 10. Rule 15When Yellow acquires right of right of way, she needs to give blue room to keep clear.

CONCLUSIONS 1. When acquiring right of way, Yellow failed to initially give Green room to keep clear, as required by rule 15. 2. Yellow, the right-of-way boat, changed course and did not give Green room to keep clear as required by rule 16. 3. Yellow did not avoid contact when it was reasonably possible to do so. Green suffered serious damage. 4. It was not reasonably possible for Blue, the right-of-way boat to avoid contact with Green when it was clear that Green when it was clear Green was not able to keep clear after the collision with Yellow. The contact between Blue and Green caused serious damage.

DECISION 1. Yellow is DSQ 2. Blue was compelled to break a rule and is exonerated under rule 64.1(a). 3. Green was compelled to break a rule and is exonerated under rule 64.1(a). 4. Redress is given to Green for Races 1 and 2 with her average score from Races 3, 4 and 5.

See you on the water. Mark Townsend

February’s MidWinter Regatta required Cal 20’s from ABYC to travel to Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. Making the trip for fantastic racing on Hurricane Gulch were Mike Corzine

and Chuck Clay on Shifty. Shifty is hull #299 formerly owned by Dan Bates Jr. and before him Ken Hodges. I first met Ken when I joined ABYC and he loved his Cal 20 and worked on it all the time. I believe

he would be very happy for the boat to be in Mike’s care. Another Cal 20 making the trip was Magic Bus with Steve George and Jeff Johnson. Magic Bus was previously owned by Latham Bell and Mark Gaudio. This boat is hull #363, with Latham &

Mark successfully winning the national championship trophy 4 times! Steve purchased Magic Bus from David Miller and she is once again showing her championship form. Horton with Matt Rustigan and Fraser McCellan made the trip to CBYC. Horton has been in the Rustigan family for nearly two decades. Matt and his dad Dave Rustigan totally restored Horton many years ago and have done a ton of work recently to keep her looking good. Lastly, Bravura

(#373 and owned by Jeff Ives & Phil Soma) joined the fun on the Gulch. Bravura was once owned by King Harbor Yacht Club’s Bud Gardiner. Bud won national championships with Bravura back in 1972 & ‘73. He must have been a mover & a shaker because there are trophies named after him and several half models and one full model of the boat. The full model is on display upstairs at KHYC and the detail is remarkable. Today, Bravura appears nearly identical to how she looked in 1972. These four Cal 20s certainly have an interesting history. Now they continue to race and make new history. They are in just as good of condition if not better than the day they sailed out of the Jensen Marine factory.Speaking of condition, Blaine Brown and his newly christened Cal 20 named About A Girl is coming along nicely. Check out Blaine’s fine work in aisle 8, slip C or D. You’ll probably run into him working on the boat. Alex Cross and his Cal 20 Swish 4 are getting some love at Kelly Marine with bottom work and a new mast step. Jerry Montgomery and Dave Myers are working on Heatwave and getting ready for May 13th. May 13th is the scheduled first Wet Wednesday of the year. Hopefully it does not get canceled. So, get down to the yard and check on your boat. It is likely to have some water inside, and that is not good. This is a great time to work on your boat as there is nothing scheduled until May 13th. Cal 20, what a great boat! Jeff Ives

Lido Love

The Last Supper... Twilights Postponed... Rumors and Lies... As you can imagine, there hasn’t been much activity

in the Lido fleet. The most recent event was The Last Supper, prepared by Alan Cunningham. Almost fifty Lido Sailors met on the last Thursday of February for a lasagna feast. What was the occasion? Nothing special, Alan didn’t want to wait until the start of Lido twilights to have dinner with all of his friends. Little did we know how long that wait would be. Thanks Alan, for bringing the fleet together and feeding us all. On that note, it saddens me to report Lido Twilights will be postponed until further notice. It’s hard to say for how long, but likely thru the end of April. Check your email for updates posted in Lido Love. Also, the Harry Wood Regatta, scheduled for mid March, was postponed. No new date has been announced. In the meantime a few inventive sailors are looking at how to safely get the fleet back on the water before this crisis is over.

Gresham Marine is designing a plexiglass barrier (think sneeze guard) to install between the skipper and crew. Sea trials of the prototype have already started, with several teams participating. One of the big concerns is how it effects communication on board. Preliminary test results show the skippers voice is attenuated by 30 dB. As you would expect, crews love it and want this permanently adopted in the class rules. Skippers refute these results claiming there is something wrong with the measurement equipment. Skippers point to excellent crew work during the trials. “How can this be possible if the crew can’t hear me?” Pending supply chain issues, barriers are expected to be available for the classic by mid April, with a 6000 series soon to follow. There are also rumors that Mark Golison is retrofitting a Lido with servos for remote control. He expects the boat will be far more responsive without crew on board. Brother Bruce is very excited that he will be able to remotely race his Lido while quarantined in his Naples bay side home. “Now I can sail in the rain without getting wet!”

Lidos will be back on the water, with or without us. Until then, stay safe.
