Reflections of a Time Now So Long Ago A legend is Born

Race Chairman, Barry Budlong, closed his welcoming letter to participants with:

“Why are we putting on this race – a non-spectator regional with no hope for a profit? We’re doing this “just for the fun of it – because we love racing and the sport. We’re not going to have any fun unless you do.”

And with this began forty five years of well managed and popular events in this the oldest, continuous, floating regional race game in New York.

In the November, 1965 Top End, the Finger Lakes Region’s newsletter, Roger Clouser, RE, noted that there was a “full race schedule” of 20 races, 122 trophies presented and a “typical good-cheer Finger Lakes Hospitality Party”attended by over 400 people.

In the same issue, Bill Bell, then Activities Director, “Like a blind man attempting to describe an elephant by touch one can only report on what one is most directly concerned with. That’s the way it is on reporting our first Finger Lakes race meeting. From our vantage point in the announcers’ sun-warmed goldfish bowl it looked great. With a minimum of four races per for each driver …there was plenty of racing for every entrant…”

Gene Dinkel wrote, “The first FLR Invitational Race offered enthusiasts a lot of racing. It offered a lot of trophies. It offered Finger Lakes members a lot of experience with the problems of putting on a race. Our region was most fortunate to have the use of America’s premier road racing circuit, the Watkins Glen Grand Prix course, and also fortunate to have the assistance of experienced and/or enthusiastic people from all the ACCA regions in our area. Considering the number of events, the problems that occurred in some of them and the fact this was Finger Lakes first race event, things came off quite smoothly.”

In his history of the Finger Lakes Region, John Castle, wrote of the event, “ October was the month of the long awaited first race to be sanctioned by FLR. This was a most successful event put together under the guiding hands of Race Chairman, Barry Budlong and R. E. Rog Clouser. An ambitious weekend it was with a program of 20 races and trophies for almost everyone. Even with the competition from races at Lime Rock and Nelson Ledges that weekend, we had an entry of 94 cars. There was a quote from John Bishop that it was one of the most professionally managed events he had seen all year… which wasn’t bad for the first try!

Thanks to the efforts of the 1965 planners, schemers and workers theFinger Lakes Invitational lives yet today as the popular Fun One.

Bob Henderson Race Chairman

For the past 45 years the Finger Lakes Region has been putting on the Finger Lakes Invitational/Fun One. The number of people who have driven and worked in the 44 prior events would make a good list of who’s who in the SCCA. During this time, what we now call the Finger Lakes Fun One has become the Finger Lakes Region annual fall event, a celebration of regional racing.

As we continue this celebration we look forward to this year’s event. Bob Henderson and John Walsh have been working for months to put everything together and find the right people to make the 45th Annual the best possible.

It is with pride that I welcome you to this year’s race weekend, to a continuation of what came before, a celebration of racing today and time to look forward to tomorrow.

This program would not have been possible without the help, exchange of “language” nor the time and work it took so many to dig out old pictures, long since forgotten. And for those that searched memories to compose biographies. As well, those that sold ads, converted everything to digital, identified the young people in old photos, and did things I couldn’t possibly. Therefore, a tip of the hat and helmet to the following – God’s little lambs:

Saturday’s Event Honorees Just six of the people we are proud to have worked with, raced with and those that we don’t want anyone to forget the contributions of time and brains they made for us. Fondly remembered.

Race 1Roy Whitaker was often described by fellow workers and friends as “a true gentleman.” He served in the US Merchant Marine during WWII on Liberty ships carrying material to Europe through sub infested waters. After his service he worked mostly for Lincoln Rochester Bank. He did some stock car racing then took up Formula V racing with the SCCA. Following his racing career Roy worked on the false grid for over 20 years as a worker and chief. He served as Treasure of FLR. Among his awards–Sportsmanship award in 1967 and TOP END Driver’s award in 1968.

Race 2Joe Cerino was one of the founders of the Finger Lakes Region in 1955 He made many and continuous contributions to the club and racing before moving to Florida in the mid-90s. Joe served as RE, chair of NEDiv conventions, our Historic Rallies and all FLR races. An active member of Race Communications Assoc. from its earliest days, he worked most of the tracks in the Northeast as station captain, flag marshal and Deputy Director. Joe was also a trainer and adviser to flag people in SCCA and RCA.

Race 3Roger Clouser joined the Finger Lakes Region in 1960 and soon, as an advertising copywriter by trade, offered to edit the region’s newsletter. He renamed it TOP END. He received the region’s Outstanding Contribution Award in 1962. In 1965 as Regional Executive he worked to get the region its first race at the Glen – The first Finger Lakes Invitational. He began racing in1960 with an MG TD and later raced an Austin Healy, a Martin T, OSCA, Bobsy and others. Roger was a frequent rallyist and popular rally chair during the 60s In 1969 he renamed the fall regional the Fun One. Through the late 60s and 70s he helped shape the region’s comp. board. Invited several times to the Runoffs. He was an inspiration, a guiding light, a friend to all.

Race 4Emily Castle was very active and very important to the FLR and SCCA. She worked at registration and timing & scoring for her region, Formula One and other professional races. Emily was the first woman to serve as a Chairman for a FLR race. She accompanied her husband John to SCCA Board meetings and worked at the Runoffs. She chaired Kids Rallies and was active in FLR gymkhana programs. A hard worker - she has left a legacy.

Race 5John Castle was involved in every facet of the Finger Lakes Region and the SCCA. His first activity was pit marshal for SCCA and pro races. He edited the FLR newsletter, he served as assistant RE, as RE, race chairman, steward and in steward capacities. He was elected to two terms as Director of SCCA’s Area 10. Through his 34 years of service he received many honors and awards – FLR’s Outstanding Contributor, SCCA’s Best Region’s Newsletter, Sportsmanship awards and the SCCA highest award, the Wolf Barnato Trophy awarded in his hospital room in Feb. 1994 shortly before he passed away due to cancer.

Race 6Chet Wilt. A long time active member in rally, race and Board of Directors. In 1958 he won the Sportsmanship Award and in 1963, the award for Outstanding Contribution. Chet served as Regional Executive in 1964. He was a faithful pit worker at races and chief Pit Marshall for many events. He was also an auto restoration expert topped by bestowing a beautiful MG TD on his daughter as a wedding present. Another was a fine BMW 2002 sedan he drove to races. He left our area for Texas to be with family before he passed away.

Sunday’s Event Honorees Today’s races are dedicated to Finger Lakes Region Members who have contributed so much to the success of this region’s events – race, rally, solo, as officers of the region, volunteers in all capacities and powers behind the thrones. These are folks who have already paid their dues and are still active and, likely, on the grounds this weekend.

Race 1 Helen Cerino was very active in Finger Lakes Region after it was established by her husband, Joe and 4 friends. She participated in many rallies with Joe and was active in Race Commun-ications when it was established. She started working in race Regis -tration as extension of her work with Race Comm. and rally registration. She served two terms as Treasurer. From the early 70s until she and Joe moved to Florida in 1994 she was frequently regional and national race Registrar. In Florida she was Registrar for several events at Daytona Speedway.

Judy Dennis is a long time active member of the FLR. She joined in 1970. She has been the region’s race registrar since November 1994. Before that she was elected to the Board of Directors in the mid 1980s. Her other contributions include chairing several races including the National at the Glen in 1986 and a recent Westward Ho at Nelson Ledges. In recognition of her many contributions to the region, she has earned both of the region’s top awards – Outstanding Worker in 1982 and Outstanding Contribution to the Region in 1983.

Race 2 Known nationally as well as locally is Dr. John States of Pittsford, NY, a pioneer in improving automotive safety based on what he learned at the race track. As a track physician at Watkins Glen he learned of the protection afforded by seat belts. As an orthopedic surgeon, he applied his knowledge and race principles to passenger cars. In 1966 he developed the first set of automobile safety standards. In 1970 he developed an improved upper body restraint system. In 1983 Dr. States drafted the New York State seat belt law, the first such law in the US. He also led efforts to develop and refine the “Abbreviated Injury Scale” which allows an accident Responder to describe the severity and nature of injuries involved to a physician. He is the author of 83 scientific publications and holds a patent for an improved seat belt latch. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to auto safety. Now retired he has enjoyed attending “old drives & crews” luncheons. We are fortunate to have a person of Dr. John State’s Stature and accomplishments in our community.

Race 3 George and Jean Morris are standouts in the history of the Finger Lakes Region. George joined in 1956 and was an active rallyist until he took his MB 190SL to the track. He raced a total of 49 years in his 190SL, a Porsche Speedster, then a VW GTI. George is a fierce competitor. He also co-drove in a number of Enduros. He was RE in 1962 and competition board chairman for many years. He received Outstanding Contribution Award in 1967, Most Improved Driver in 1968 and the Top End award in 1971 and 1976.

Jean Morris joined FLR shortly after George and was very active in regional programs, rally, timing and scoring, registration and won the Outstanding Contribution Award in 1969. She was treasurer in 1981 and 1982. Jean spent many a weekend with timing & scoring regional, national, Formula 1 and other pro races. She is always helping race and rally Chairpersons. She and George put out Top End in 1969.

Race 4 A member of the Finger Lakes Region for over 50 years Gene Dinkel has done it all and seen It all. In those five decades Gene has participated, up to his neck, in all the activities that the SCCA could throw at its members. He started as a crew member for co-worker Roger Clouser and was a Grid Marshall for the Formula 1 days at the Glen and for many SCCA races. He has

Page 9: Official program - 2009 Fun One

Rallied, autocrossed and raced in a Buick which he still owns. He was Top End newsletter editor and columnist. Gene’s greatest contributions have been as an event chairman and organizer. He has been assistant chairman and chairman of many races at Watkins Glen and Nelson Ledges. He organized several charity events including the Kids Rally for youngsters at St. Joseph’s Villa. Among regional offices Gene has been a licensed race steward, race licensing chair, activities director, assistant regional executive, regional executive, secretary and member of the Board of Directors. He received the region’s Sportsmanship and Outstanding Contribution awards. Through all these years, Gene has been the “go to guy” whenever a job needed to be done. The Finger Lakes Region and the sport have flourished with Gene as a prodder, leader, driver, planner and pal.

Race 5 Bill Bell is a 50 plus year member of the Finger Lakes Region. Bill is known by many as the voice of FLR races, announcing our regional and national races on the tracks’ PA systems continually since our first race in 1965. A very active rallyist in national as well as regional and special (five times at the famous Press On Regardless in northern Michigan, the Canadian and Michigan/Ohio/NY series) events. There was also Autocross and he ran this and rallys in a series of 3 MG-As, an MG-B and a Mini. It was Bill Bell and Bob Henderson that gave birth to STRP, the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally, one of the nation’s most important rallys. Bill was Activities Director in 1965 and Regional Executive in 1968 and has served as a Director. Bill was awarded the FLR Sportsmanship trophy in 1970 and Outstanding Contribution Award in 1975.

Race 6 Barry Budlong joined SCCA in 1955. He has been a continuous member since. He started in rally and moved to racing later. He competed in an Alfa Romeo, a 1100cc Cooper Climax and a Hallman’s Chevy Corvette. During a race in Dunkirk, NY, Barry made a spectacularly hasty exit from a fire in that Corvette. Off track, Barry was Race Chairman for the first Finger Lakes Region race, THE FINGER LAKES INVITATIONAL, which we celebrate this weekend. He was Regional Executive in 1977; served on the competition board for many years and was on the SCCA national insurance committee. After his driving career Barry became a team owner. He backed Jim Rowe, a talented driver, until Rowe abruptly retired from racing. In the 1970s Barry joined with Lou Gigliotti to form Budlong Team 3 competing in National events with Bob Sharp and Paul Newman, etc. and in Super Vee against a young Al Unser Jr. and Bobby Rahal. Barry is a founder and stalwart member of the Old Drivers & Crew luncheon club.

The 2009 fun One is the 7th race event for this program that Gary and Lisa Lippert brought to life in the fall of 2007 with the help of Mary Sample-Smith of the Office of Children & Family Services (OCFS) in Albany. The foster Parent Rewards & Recruitment Program is quickly ap-proaching the completion of its second full year of rewarding deserving foster parents and families from the Western New York Area.

Gary and his racing partner, Keith Guthrie, have used their race car as a means to connect current foster families with their team’s racing family, the SCCA, and help connect potential foster parents with a family they may not have known.

The race team has garnered tremendous support from each of their families, Advent Tool & Mold, Inc., Davis Trailer World, Caledonia Diesel, The Finger Lakes and Glen Regions and Watkins Glen International to welcome the foster families to the track during each of the four race weekends they host each year.

This weekend, a foster family from the Catholic Family Center will be at the track to get the SCCA experience. Please feel free to stop by their garage space to say “Hello,” and to learn more about foster parenting.

Are You Annoyed All the Time?

Ask Your Doctor Whether Annoyamine Is RightFor the Annoying People Around You

Do people constantly tell you to lighten up and be more tolerant of others? Those people are objectively annoying. The problem is obviously not in yourself. You would be perfectly fine if not for all the annoying people around you.

Now, for the first time, there’s real hope. Annoyamine is the only prescription drug approved for dispensing to all the people who annoy you. Only Annoyamine works from the inside out to make annoying people measurably less annoying. In a controlled study, an-noying people became up to 78% less annoying after taking Annoyamine, with observers describing their behavior as ranging from “pleasant” to “unconscious.” Colorless, odorless, and tasteless, Annoyamine may be administered discreetly and without embarrassment to problem subjects as needed.
