JUDGES’ BIOGRAPHIES 2018CONFORMATION JUDGES
RITA J. BIDDLE, MICHIGAN, USAMy name is Rita J. Biddle, and I’m delighted to be judging the Erie Shores KC shows again. I’ve always enjoyed being a part of your shows.
I began my career in the sport of purebred dogs over 45 years ago with Great Danes. In the early ‘80s, I became interested in the Akita after taking care of one for a friend and had the two breeds simultaneously until I lost my last Dane in 1997. My kennel name is O’Ryan. While quite a few of my Danes became champions, my involvement with the Akita has been more intense resulting in many champions. My line produced foundation stock for several kennels including a bitch who became one of the top producers in breed history with 16 champions from four different sires. One of her offspring was the youngest Akita to ever go BIS.
My Akitas have ranked in the top 10 over the years and have received Awards of Merit at Akita National Specialties and last year won Select Dog. They also have won group placements and my male won an Award of Merit at this year’s Westminster Dog Show.
I also have been very active in my all breed club, Ingham Co. KC, and have served in various officer positions and have been the club’s Delegate to the AKC since 2005. In March of last year my fellow Delegates elected me to the Board of Directors of the American Kennel Club.
My parent club activities include serving as Past President and Board member of the Akita Club of America and as a past Vice-President and Board Member of the United States Neapolitan Mastiff Club.
In the mid-80s, I began judging matches and fell in love with that side of the sport. I thoroughly enjoy studying the various breeds and find their history and the purpose for which they were bred to be most fascinating. I am always impressed that form follows function and how so many of the standards reflect this fact. When judging, I try my best to find the exhibits that most closely fit their standard. I have judged all over the US at all breed shows, regional and national specialties. I’ve also been honored and privileged to judge all breed shows and specialties in Canada, Mexico, the UK, and Europe.
It is always a thrill for me to put my hands on a dog and then to watch it move and evaluate it against its standard. There are many great moments in judging, such as: putting a young puppy at ease and feeling them relax in your hands and start to have a good time, finding a young dog that goes on to become one of the greats in its breed, and having an exhibit that takes your breath away standing or moving.
The whole judging process is a most challenging and rewarding endeavor. I am happy to have the sport of pure bred dogs as a major part of my life and am most pleased to be with you this weekend.

In addition, I have been closely involved with the Norwich Terrier as well as showing and handling Dalmatians and German Shepherds.
I gained my judges licence for Terriers in 2002 following this up with my Toy licence in 2006. During this time, I had the opportunity to judge not just in Australia but also New Zealand.
In 2008 I travelled to Canada to judge the Norfolk Terrier Club of Canada’s specialty and 2011 I was invited to judge the Norfolk Terrier Club of GB show and in 2012 I judged the Blue Bonnet Norfolk Terrier Club show in San Antonio.
January 2016, I judged in Florida Toys, Terriers and the Samoyed specialty along with Dobermans and Rottweilers. In October 2016 I judged in South Africa judging terriers, toys, non-sporting and utility. One day judging to FCI standards.
This year I have been invited to judge the Norfolk Terriers at Montgomery USA and the Scottish Terrier Club of Washington DC specialty. I am licensed to judge Toys, Terriers, Hounds, Utility and Non-sporting.
LYDIA COLEMAN HUTCHINSON, MARYLAND, USALydia has been involved with dogs her entire life and attended her first dog show with her parents in 1949.
The breed to which she has devoted her life is the Cairn Terrier. Her WOLFPIT KENNEL, shared with her deceased parents, has accounted for over 273 AKC Champions, including numerous top winners and producers. The first WOLFPIT litter was born in 1941 and the most recent in May 2015.
The success of the WOLFPIT breeding program can be attributed to Lydia’s wise decisions in using line breeding and judicious outcrosses. Although the majority of WOLFPIT litters are of pure WOLFPIT bloodlines, over the years four bitches have been imported from overseas. Lydia was able to see and/ or judge their parents before deciding to acquire them, making it possible for her to get an idea of the bloodlines behind them. Each of them became Champions and, bred to her homebred dogs, also became Top Producers.More important than the success the WOLFPIT dogs have enjoyed in the show ring is the fact that several dozen Cairn breeders have used WOLFPIT dogs to incorporate into their breeding programs
with a positive affect. In addition to dogs sold to owners in the U.S.A., her dogs have been exported to Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Germany, and Russia. Just a few of the outstanding winners and producers from the kennel are: Ch. Caledonian Berry of Wolfpit (multi- BIS and specialty winner, sire of 36 Chs), Gch. Caledonian In-For-A-Penny of Wolfpit (top 5 Cairn for 2 years), Ch. Bonnie Bairn of Wolfpit (group winner & top producer), Ch. Persimmon of Wolfpit (specialty winner, sire of 27 Chs.), Ch. Cairnwoods Quince (BIS winner & winner of CTCA 4 times, sire of 51 Chs.) Ch. Cairnhoe Highlander of Wolfpit (CTCA specialty winner, sire of 12 Chs.), Ch. Cairnhoe Alliance of Wolfpit (dam of 10 Chs.), Ch. Birselaw Peggy Sue (dam of 9 Chs.). The current flag-bearer is GCh. Caledonian Tea Time of Wolfpit (group & specialty winner, promising sire of 5 recent Chs.).
In addition to being an active breeder, Lydia has served as an AKC judge for 54 years and has also judged in numerous countries abroad. She is a past President of the Cairn Terrier Club of America and currently serves on the Board of Governors. She is a founder of the Potomac Cairn Terrier Club as well as the Bay Area Judges Association. She also is Vice President of the Columbia Terrier Association of Maryland and Treasurer of the Mason Dixon Dog Judges Association.
FRANK KANE, GREAT BRITIANFrank Kane showed his first dog, a cocker spaniel as a schoolboy, and he has been involved in the dog world ever since. Whilst at University he co-owned and handled two Sealyham Terriers to their titles. In 1970 he obtained two American cocker spaniel bitches as a foundation for his HIRONTOWER kennel. One of these bitches became a champion and both produced champions. 13 UK Champions were produced with others overseas. The Cockers have also remained a permanent favourite and CCs were won with these also. Frank has also been heavily involved in Dachshunds, Afghans and Great Danes and has handled champions in all of those breeds.
First awarding challenge certificates in the UK IN 1974, Frank is now approved to award CCs in 110 breeds and judges all groups and Best in Show in the UK and has judged all groups and Best in Show under FCI rules. He judged Best in Show at Crufts in 2012.
Frank is a member of the Kennel Club Board of Directors and Chairman of the Breed Standards Committee. He is also chairman of one of the Dog Health groups.
Frank is author of several books on dogs and his book “Judging the Gundog Breeds” is much acclaimed worldwide. Outside his canine interests Frank is a keen horseman and has judged at some prestigious shows in the UK.
PAULA NYKIEL, MISSOURI, USAPaula Nykiel has been involved in purebred dogs for over 40 years. She began as a breeder-owner-handler of Pointers and has bred over 50 champions under the Sydmar banner, including the breed’s all-time top producer, Ch. Sydmar the Heartless Wench. She handled her Pointers to number one rankings in 1978, 1979, and 1982, scoring 15 all-breed Bests in Show, over 50 group firsts, and Best of Breed at the American Pointer Club national specialty.
Mrs. Nykiel is approved to judge the Sporting and Working groups, 16 Hound Breeds and German Shepherd Dogs. She has judged at twenty-one national specialties and numerous international venues.
Mrs. Nykiel is a past director and Futurity/Maturity chairman of the American Pointer Club. She was a founding member and officer of the Missouri Rhineland Kennel Club and the Gateway Sporting Dog Association and is a member of the Three Rivers Kennel Club.
Mrs. Nykiel and her husband of 45 years, Frank Nykiel, have two grown daughters and three granddaughters and one grandson. The Nykiel family converted an 1860’s corn-cob pipe factory into their home and gardens on the Missouri River.
ROBERT SHREVE, COLORADO, USAMr. Shreve was raised in Sioux Falls, SD. with a smooth fox terrier as his best friend. Shortly after graduating from college a fraternity brother offered Bob a German Shepherd puppy. In 1968 after the family moved to Greeley, Colorado the Shreve children decide that the shepherd was too big for doll clothes and she was falling out of the red wagon. They wanted a smaller dog. As a 10th anniversary present Bob purchased a West Highland White Terrier. Within a year the eldest daughter was given a Wire Fox Terrier and for the next 25 years Bob and his wife Marietta bred Westies and Wires Foxes and showed them throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
Bob was elected President of Greeley Kennel Club in 1971 and served as president on five occasions for a total of 21 years. He also served six years on the Board of Directors of the West Highland White Terrier Club of America.
Bob was granted approval to judge Fox Terriers and West Highlands on April 14, 1978. He received his approval to judge the Terrier Group January 1, 1988, Herding Group in 1994, Working Group in 2002, Sporting Group in 2010, Non-Sporting Group in 2014. In addition, he is approved to judge 8 Hounds and 3 Toys breeds. Bob judges between 60 and 70 shows a year. He has judged the top twenty for the Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, Bouvier des Flanders, Keeshond, Lhasa Apso and Tibetan Terriers. Internationally he has judged in Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Columbia, Mexico, New Zealand and Thailand.
Bob graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in Art and a Masters in Architecture. He moved to Greeley to work for a large architectural and engineering firm. He became a managing partner in 1978 and he left the firm in late 1993 to open his own firm. He continues to work at Robert Shreve Architects and Planners specializing in industrial, commercial and educational structures.
KITTY STEIDEL (CLAIRE K), ARIZONA, USAI grew up with dogs—an Irish Setter, a English Setter and any stray I found, so it was no surprise that I was drawn to dog shows. Under the Sanchu prefix, my husband, Chuck, and I have been involved with Basset Hounds since 1968 and PBGV’s since their introduction to the U.S. in 1983. Always an owner handler, I showed proudly in Bred By Exhibitor classes until I was approved to judge the Hound Group; I then retired from going in the ring personally. Many of our Bassets and those related to ours have earned top honors at the BHCA Nationals from 1993 Ch Sanchu’s Hot Toddy (BOB) until the present. Our retired special Ch. Topsfield-Sanchu Eenie Meenie Miney Moe, aka Tiger, was BOB in 2013.
In the past I have been the Gazette breed columnist for the PBGVCA, written a monthly column for Sight and Scent, the all hound magazine. I have served as the JEC Chair for the PBGV club since the founding of the club in 1984 served as PBGVCA’s first President, and registered the first PBGV with the AKC, Ch Babette de la Garonne. I have spent 30+ years on the Basset Club of America’s JEC, served 14 years as Delegate to the AKC, am currently a member of the Board of the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen Club of America. I helped originate the Scottsdale Dog Judges Workshop, newly named the Arizona Dog Judges Education, and The Golden Gate Judges Seminars for rarer breeds. The following clubs have honored me with Life Membership: Basset Hound Club of America, PBGV Club of America, Scottsdale Dog Fanciers, and Channel City KC. I give frequent presentations on the PBGVs, Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen and Bassets. I have judged in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark as well as New Zealand, Australia and Argentina.
In 1987 my book, Understanding the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (Orient) received a nomination for best breed book by the Dog Writers Association of America. It was the first book written in any language devoted exclusively to the PBGV.I graduated from Wells College in Aurora, NY with a major in English. Following this I earned a Master’s Degree from Cornell University. I taught Junior High English and ESOL in public and private schools and sold Real Estate
I am approved to judge Hounds and Sporting Groups, 11 Toys; Permit status for 8 toys and Miniature American Shepherds, Aussies.
Living with us are one Basset, retired BIS and BISS winner, Tiger, and a 3 year old Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, Sidekick Sanchu Gilbey on Ice who just started his show career.

DAVID WONG, AUSTRALIAI was born to a family that always had Pointers and Setters for hunting in the Colony of Hong Kong. My late father was a keen hunter and a great shot. When I was 13 years old he gave me a side by side Winchester 20-gauge model 21 (a rare gun now) to learn to shoot skeet at the HKGC as he was the President for many years. He also created the only gun licensee in Hong Kong and that lasted for decades from 1929. My sisters and I learned to do competitive shooting from when we were very young in skeet, trap and rifle competition. We hunted partridges, snipe, duck and quail and
woodcocks in the New Territories on Kowloon, Hong Kong. In that era the hills and the mountains were full of game and so very sparsely populated and the countryside was so beautiful.
We always had superb pointers and setters for hunting partridges. It was not until I finished Sydney University studies that I was introduced by some friends of other breeds to go to see dog shows in Sydney. After a few times, I was hooked on showing Pointers. My late father was most annoyed with me to show dogs instead of using the dogs solely for hunting leisure.
My luck came when I read and saw the English Field and Country Life magazine in early 1964. There were two to three pages written on the well-known Crookrise Pointers owned by Walter Edmondson in Skipton, Yorkshire. Walter was about to die of cancer and so the two magazines wrote such an alluring life of this famous man and his Pointers with some beautiful photographs of Crookrise Vogue, Crookrise Duncanson and Crookrise Briar. Those few dogs captured my heart and soul at once.
Being young and wanting to own this type of Pointers I was fortunate enough to get hold of Kitty Edmondson by phone at her home at the Gardens House near Skipton. From the moment when I called, Kitty and I became friends for over 30 years or more. Our relationship developed into trusting friendship till nowadays even after her passing. I have her beautiful dogs and also bred some beautiful dogs that have won BIS not just for myself but for others. I also trained them for the gun and my dual-purpose devotion took me to grouse shooting by the kind invitation of Lady Jean Forde of Isle of Arran fame. My father gave me a Churchill side by side 12-gauge shotgun to take to Scotland to grouse shoot on Arran together with hunting jacket, breeches and boots. Through the famous Crookrise Pointers of Kitty Edmondson and her daughter Cicely Robertshaw I also met many prominent pointer breeders and judges of various breeds who became my mentors in the UK. I learned so much from them and their dogs. Without them I would never be as successful as I am today.
I am qualified to judge all breeds of Gundogs and Hounds. I judged Crufts, American Pointer Club National and The Southern Pointer Club championship show twice in England. I judged in various championship shows in England and Scotland, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, Ireland, Hong Kong, Australia.
Such is my brief story of my dog life.
