“Championing people withdisabilities' (PWDs) right to workworld-wide” is the slogan of
Workability International, theworld's largest representationalbody for providers of work andemployment services to PWDs.
More than two million PWDs are engaged in workprograms delivered by its member organizations in36 countries. We believe that PWDs must havelegal rights to equal opportunities and non-discrimination in all aspects of their lives,especially in the world of work. To put this on theground, Workabil ity International works inpartnership with a range of international bodiesand authorities, to break down the barrierswhich prevent PWDs from participating in theworkforce and therefore, maximizing theirs o c i a l a n d e c o n o m i c i n d e p e n d e n c e .
As a member of this organization, TahanangWalang Hagdanan was tasked to organize theA s i a P a c i f i c C o n f e r e n c e o f Wo r k a b i l i t yInternational-Asia on April 22, 2009. Twentyparticipants from Japan and Fifteen from othermember countries are attending the conference,a total of 35 delegates. Aside from them, Stake-holders from the Philippines including privatecompanies, non-government organizations andgovernment agencies are invited to join. The lastconference of which was held at Sapporo,Japan where 59 countries participated last yearincluding the Philippines which was attended byMs. Joy. Garcia from TWH, Johnny Lantion ofN F C W D P a n d P e t e r H a m e r l e e o f C B M .
We wish to invite more members to have a strongeralliance to bring on board every Filipino disabledespecially in the world of work and employment.

One of the programs of TahanangWalang Hagdanan is the mobility aidassistance, that is providing wheelchairand other mobility aid such as cane,crutches, walker, prosthesis, leg braces,etc. to indigent persons with mobilityi m p a i r m e n t . W e h a v e t h r e e( 3 ) s o u r c e s o f t h i s p r o g r a m
Gulong Sa Pagsulong - one of themost sought welfare services of TahanangWalang Hagdanan, since it started last1994. Many avai l of this serv icereferred through our Community BasedRehabilitation Program and referred by theoffice of the Department of SocialWelfare and Development, other NGOs,Government Offices, hospitals andreligious organizations. Most of thebeneficiaries of this program availcustomized wheelchair and otherassistive devices produced by TahanangWalang Hagdanan. Beneficiaries wererequired to contribute some counterpartin any amount they could share for wewant them to be responsible of their needsand do away with the “dole out” system.( c o n t i n u e d n e x t p a g e ( 2 )

Donors are companies, organiza-tions and individuals who give mostlywheelchairs as part of their corporatesocial responsibility, or to share theirblessings to those in need of wheelchairFor this year we got 20 units of brandnew wheelchairs from Otsuka Pharmaand 18 units had been given to thebeneficiaries last December 2008.
For almost a year now, we have beenreceiving imported wheelchairs from theLatter Day Saints through the facilitationof the National Council on DisabilityAffairs and the NOVA Foundation. Thesewheelchairs are given free of charge toindigent Persons with Disability nation-wide. Aside from individual beneficiaries,organizations, hospitals, are alsogiven for the use of their patients.
For all requests, we require SocialCase Study report from the Departmentof Social Welfare and DevelopmentOffice or private / NGO’s Social Workerand a whole body picture of the benefi-ciary. In some cases we also request theMedical Abstract.

In the thirty-six years since theestablishment of Tahanang WalangHagdanan, Inc. we have achieveddramatic success. TWH Sales and MarketingWorkshop has been busy for the past
months. Lots of new clients were served
and new products were developed.
Metalcraft department was able to
supply mobility aids to different social
welfare and development offices of
numerous provinces like Pangasinan,
Ilocos and more. Continuous support
of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes to its
beneficiaries to provide wheelchairs is
also one of the big factors. SM
Foundation ordered fifty two (52) units
of Chromeplated Sports-type wheelchair
for their beneficiaries. Orders of school
chairs from private schools also contri-
buted to attain the annual target sales.
Woodcraft section started the year

Several municipalities and Montessori

December 6, 2008 was a veryimportant date to Tahanang WalangHagdanan (TWH) . Th is was thelaunching of the 1 Philippine WheelchairB a l l r o o m D a n c i n g / D a n c e S p o r tCompetition, which was entitled:S T E P S f o r a B R I G H T F U T U R EPart II. It was held in SM City NorthEdsa, North Avenue corner EdsaQuezon City at 7pm. Out of the 14semi- finalists who are PWDs and inwheelchair, 5 male and 9 female pairedwith able bodied participants, 3 coupleswere chosen for the male categoryand another 3 for the female

category.
The event not only defied physicallimitation in Ballroom dancing butalso empowered the capabilities ofPWDs. Thanks to all our partnersespecially the Disability Affairs Officeof SM Supermalls with Chairman BienMateo, Professional Dance TeachersAssociation of the Philippines withChairman Atty. Ma. Cecilia Katigbakand National Council on DisabilityAffairs with Executive DirectorGeraldine Ruiz and Mr. BhongMarquez of PDTA & Dance SportCouncil of the Phils. who was thetrainer for the Wheelchair BallroomDancing Workshop for their fullsupport that made the event asuccess. For this year, there willbe a national competition and welook forward that more participantswill be joining to compete.

which is the Anti-Violence for Women
and Children. This was participated

Oral Health CareProgram for PWDs
The Rizal Dental Chapter (RDC), inpartnership with the Philippine DentalAssociation (PDA) and Philippine Collegeof Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeons(PCOMS) has established a project calledComprehensive Oral Health Care Programfor Physically Challenged Persons of TWH.This project was launched last September28, 2008 together with the conduct ofits first procedure which was the oralhealth care education and mouthexamination/oral diagnosis. The launchingwas graced by Dr. Robert Tajonera andDr. Angelo Fernandez, PDA's ExecutiveVice President and Vice President forSouth Luzon respectively. This endeavoris not like the usual dental missions thatcome and go but a program that includesall services (mouth examination, dentalextraction, oral prophylaxis, restorativeand prosthodontic procedures) for all200 PWD-beneficiaries of the center.
This project is implemented throughthe leadership of Dr. Mario Esquillo, pastPresident of PDA and PCOMS andcurrently the latter's Senior Consultantand Chairman for Training/Residencyprograms; Dr. Rosarito Regencia,President of RDC; and Dr. JosephVillafuerte, Chairman of this particularprogram and RDC's Adhoc Committee.Dental extraction and oral prophylaxiswere conducted last October 12 andNovember 15/29 while restorativeprocedures were started December 14,2008. Quite a number of dedicated andgenerous dentists from RDC participate inthis program which is greatly appreciatedand makes it really worthwhile. We are alsovery grateful to volunteers and sponsorswho contr ibuted to the success ofprevious activities – Tsu Zhi Foundation,
