Greetings fromGreetings fromGreetings fromGreetings from

the Coronetthe Coronetthe Coronetthe Coronet

Greetings to the wonderful Populace of the Barony of Atenveldt,

March has been a period of rest and relaxation after the tremendous effort expanded at

Estrella War. The weather has been beautiful and Spring Fever is a foot.

However, in the North, snow still lies on the ground as Her Excellency found out when she traveled to Aurora’s Feast. This fun and festive event was held in Flagstaff in the Barony of Ered Sul. During Court, His Excellency Christopher encouraged the artisans of his Barony to enter the Kingdom A&S competition even going so far as to suggest his Barony had the BEST artisans. Unable to let that statement go without comment, Her Excellency challenged Baron Christopher to an ART OFF to prove that the Barony of Atenveldt has the best artisans in the Kingdom. So I am calling all artisans of the Barony to start thinking about what they would like to enter into this

competition. The honor of the Barony is at stake!!

Even with Estrella War over, there are many minor skirmishes happening all around the Kingdom. Mixed Weapons war in March, Barmaids in April and our own Baronial event in May, Pilgrim’s Progress. And of course May will also be the time when we see a New King and Queen crowned. If you are planning on camping at coronation, please contact Michael the Taverner at [email protected] to reserve space. Do NOT contact the site. We encourage all of the Populace to join us at these

events.

Until we next meet,

Baron

Edward

Looking ahead, the Barony has now paid for lights for all four Wednesdays in April, and for the last three Wednesdays in May - the first Wednesday in May is May 5th, and the entire park is booked for a Cinco de Mayo celebration with expected attendance around 10,000. We don't yet know whether we'll find an alternate practice site for that night or just cancel practice and wish everyone a happy Cinco de Mayo, so keep an eye on the Baronial list for further announcements. Harry Rudkin

Bids for the July 10-11 event are due by April 1. This is an excellent opportunity for a new autocrat to try their hand, a tour-ney planner to run that "something different", or for anyone who may be getting more active after some time off. If you have questions about this chance to make your vision come alive, contact the seneschal, Rhys or Their Excellencies.

-Baronial Exchequer-

-& Emergency Deputy Exchequer-

This is a two-year warranted position. The Baronial Exchequer reports to the Kingdom Exchequer, and is in charge of all financial activities for Baronial accounts. The Baronial Exchequer compiles financial information & reports to the Baronial Financial Committee. The position requires an ability to tactfully work with Baronial Officers and members of the populace; an understanding of the implementation of SCA financial guidelines in the Society Financial Policy, Baronial Law and Baronial financial policy; strong writing and organizational skills; word processing and email skills; and a computer and printer with Internet access (most communication is via email). Prior experience as a Exchequer or Officer for a Local group is very helpful, as is real-world management and personnel experience. Applications should include an SCA resume, and an outline of applicable real world experience. Send copies to: the Exchequer of the Barony of Atenveldt <[email protected]>. In addition, a filled out Warrant of Appointment to Financial Office Form (found on the www.sca.org website at http://www.sca.org/docs), and the documents requested by that form, (picture ID and proof of membership), must also be sent to the Kingdom of Atenveldt Exchequer.

-Baronial A&S Minister-

The Office of Minister of Arts and Sciences is responsible for fostering the study of period culture and technology, and methods for producing historically accurate artifacts and performances. His/her duties include promoting the dissemination of accurate information about the fields under study. It is also the responsibility of the Minister of Arts and Sciences to help organize demonstrations, exhibitions, competitions, classes, workshops or deputies can do this. By all means do not feel you have to take on this job without help.

Every local A & S Officer must submit monthly reports summarizing the activities of the local group and local members. Being accessible to the Barony and keeping the populace educated about what is happening both locally and at the Kingdom level is a vital part of the job. Another important part of an A & S Officers’ duty is communication with artisans so that each gets the help and recognition that is needed. The A & S Officer is responsible for promoting all aspects of the Arts and Sciences including period-inspired creativity, scholarly research or authentic research. Anyone who shows an interest in the arts and sciences should be encouraged thorough competitions, displays, teaching or performing, to name a few. The A & S Officer should also help at Kingdom A & S events and Collegiums whenever possible and actively recruit participants and teachers.

-Waiver Secretary-

This job entails keeping track of which warranted fighters are fighting at the weekly fighter practice and getting waivers signed by those that must sign each week.

-Chancellor of the Youth-

Wanted to provide diversions at events, coordinate smalls, and have an all around “cheery disposition”.

-Keeper of the Ropes-

This individual should be able to set-up, tear-down, transport and store the ropes for the Barony’s weekly fighter practice.

-Deputies for all Major Offices- “Many hands make work light,” and every office in the Barony could use a deputy. It is also a great way to learn about a position before taking the job yourself.

If you wish to submit your letter of intent, or have any questions regarding the above offices, please send deputy inquires to the appropriate office (contact information listed in the front of this issue), all other inquiries may be sent to [email protected]

How to submit an AwardHow to submit an AwardHow to submit an AwardHow to submit an Award By Kirsten Maria Matz

You want to do an amazingly helpful thing, make an award recommendation. The Crown and the Coronets cannot possibly keep track of all the wondrous things those of their populous are doing each and every minute. So, don't be afraid, they want you to submit those recommendations. First things first, you've found that “oh so” deserving individual. The next very helpful thing is to determine if that person is a paid member. Awards can only be given to paid members. If they aren't, maybe it's time to convince them the usefulness of having a membership. After all, they get into events cheaper, right? Membership requirements now aside, which award covers the deeds of this most noble individual? You can find this information out several ways. You can look on-line, both the Kingdom (http://www.atenveldt.org/Heraldry/OverviewofKingdomofAtenveldtAwards.aspx#Kingdom) and the Baronial (http://www.baronyofatenveldt.org/awards.htm) websites have descriptions of the different awards. You can also read the following pages, which cover a brief description of the Awards for the Barony of Atenveldt. Finally, you could always ask. There are many people who would be happy to help you sort it out, including their Excellencies, your local officers, or those not so rare SCAdian dinosaurs Now, you know the person and the award you want to recommend them for. Submission of the award recommendation can be done in writing and mailed to the appropriate Crown or Coronet. By far the easiest thing to do though, is to fill out the on-line submission form. On the Barony of Atenveldt's website the submission form is directly below the different award descriptions, nice and easy. In either case, you will want the following information in the award recommendation submission: For the individual being recommended: Society Name Modern Name Member Number (if known) Award Suggestion Description of Why (be specific) For the individual making the recommendation: Society Name Modern Name Group Telephone Number Email Address

Page 10: Official Newsletter of The Barony of Atenveldt...Palm Prints 2 April 2010 Court of the Barony of Atenveldt BARO & BAROESS: Edward de Foxton & Annalies Katerina Schneider {Ed & Ann

Palm Prints 10 April 2010

At this point, your job isn't quite done. It is sometimes helpful to have others submit a recommendation for the same person. This allows those in a position to give the award to have a better picture of the individual and how truly deserving they are. Finally, get the person to Court. If they never go to Court, they won't realize the fun they're missing, and will never get the award. This author has personally seen somebody get a three year past due award because they never came to court. Award recommendations are no harder than that. Help your reigning Royalty and make those recommendations. YIS, Kirsten Matz, Baronial Chronicler

Service Announcement from the

Kingdom Seneschal Best Regards to all of you dreaming about Estrella War 2011 already! There has been a lot of rumor and speculation on the location of next year's war, I write today to clear up any confusion on this point. The Kingdom of Atenveldt and Estrella War have agreed to remain one more year at the current site, Canyon Moon Ranch in Florence, Arizona for Estrella War 2011. We are looking at other venues as potential sites for the future and have decided to complete our contract with Canyon Moon Ranch to allow plenty of time for thorough research and consideration of any other sites that may be suggested. William Dunstan of York, OP, Kingdom Seneschal, Atenveldt cross posting of this message is encouraged please

Greetings unto the populous of Atenveldt, Speaking on behalf of our kingdom Siege Commander, Baron Otto. We are looking for all people who are interested in Siege. Whether you have a Siege weapon or have a desire to learn about, build, crew, and operate a Siege weapon, please send me an e-mail off list (saving list space). We want to compile a couple of list, one for those who have siege weapons and one for those who want to be involved with Siege weapons (build, crew, operate).

We also are wanting to create a Siege forum for people to use for information and or up coming dates for: Practises , meetings, and possible future siege classes and or work days. Or if you just have an opinion or an idea on something related to siege. We're starting fresh, fresh faces and fresh ideas. There's a lot of Siege skill and knowledge out there, and we want to harness this. And with time, even expand the skills of not only the current Siege community, but any future prospects for the Siege community. Your humble servant, William the Millwright, Kingdom Siege Engineer

Potluck

Submitted By: Kirsten Matz

The word potluck is a combined English word from the components pot and luck. The earliest written citation of potluck was in the form “pot lucke” by Thomas Nashe in 1592. The quote is as follows: "That that pure sanguine complexion of yours may never be famisht with pot lucke." “Pot lucke” being that it was your luck to find what ever was in the pot, possiblities extended to inns and unexpected guests. So yes, ladies and lords a pot lucke is period. References:
