Why didn’t the chicken cross the road? Because it got run over half way. A girl asks a boy. “Peter how much do you love me? The boy looks her in the eyes, “Look up at the stars, that’s how much I love you.” The girl is confused, “But it’s morning, there are no stars.” Boy nods. “Exactly” What is the difference between roast beef and pea soup? You can roast beef but you can’t pee soup. A couple was having a discussion about family finances. Finally the husband exploded, “ If it weren’t for my money, the house wouldn’t be here.” The wife replied, “ If it weren’t for your money, I wouldn’t be here”

JANUARY BREAKFAST RUN There was an amazing roll up for the first run of the year. Approximately 50 members and friends went for a drive around the new housing estates of Estella Rise and Barooma to see the incredible new development, with some insight and commentary from Stu LeLievre who has been working on those two sub-divisions. Many of us Wagga locals were totally unaware of the number of new houses being built in the area. The morning started very early as it was predicted to be a hot one – and it was.

After our drive we headed off to Collins park to sit in the shade of the beautiful big trees and have our bacon and eggs cooked by our trusty cooks – well done boys. It was a very relaxing morning and everyone was having such a great time that we lingered around chatting for quite a while. The park was just beautiful for breakfast on a hot day Malcolm Nixon had driven his 1912 Daimler bus to the park and it took those passengers that wanted, for a memorable drive around the block. I think this might have been the buses first official club drive. Thank you to everyone who contributed and attended. ***** A police recruit was asked during his exam, “What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?” He answered, “Call for backup.” *****

SOUTHERN MOTORING ASSOCIATION (SMA) ROADSHOW UPDATE On the 14th January 2017 several of our club members attended the SMA Roadshow for updates on the Classic Vehicle Scheme(CVS), meeting held in Wagga. The CVS was activated by RMS on the 19th December 2016 allowing for all vehicles greater than 30 years of age and under 3.5 tonne including modified, scheme includes 60-day log book. The main interest for our club is the tightening up of the existing H plate rego to reflect vehicles being: - 1 Authentic and original (as possible) to manufactures specifications. 2 Where improvements and safety modifications are made, these alterations comply with the relevant policies of RMS in particular Vehicle Standards Information No 6 (VSI No6). A grace period for vehicles to move from H plate to CVS is being implemented then there may be some auditing of club’s H plate registered vehicles. Grace period probably until end of logbook trial being 1st Oct 2017. Our club committee feels that all our H plate registered vehicles comply and there is no need to move any over to CVS at this time. Being affiliated with the SMA we automatically as a club are registered for CVS if needed in the future. Many clubs are opting for CVS however some are not, our committee feels it best for us to remain as is and in doing so we offer something different from what may be the norm. In addition, this decision promotes the unified group we have for preserving automotive history. In summary our club at this time only accepts H Plate for conditional Registration. Any queries please contact me. Rob LeLievre

FORD AUSTRALIA, THE END OF AN ERA Part 3 – Continued from January Reflection

Performance Vehicles

Ford Australia in addition, sells highly tuned limited-production Falcon sedans and utes through its performance car division, Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV).

The roots of FPV can be traced back to 1991 when the English automotive engineering company Tickford began a collaboration with Ford Australia to produce high performance variants of the Falcon range.

The partnership saw the introduction of the Falcon S-XR6 and the Falcon S-XR8 models.

This was followed in 1999 by the launch of the Ford Tickford Experience (FTE) dealer network and the FTE T-Series range based on Ford’s AU Falcon and Fairlane models.

In 2002, Prodrive purchased Tickford and the name Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) was created to replace FTE. A restructured range was developed based on the BA Falcon, seeing the return of the GT nameplate to a Falcon based product and as a regular production model since the XB Falcon GT.

Over the years the FPV expanded the range to include a High Performance version of the Ford Territory as well as a number of special editions and anniversary models. Prodrive also founded Ford Performance Racing in 2003, entering the V8 Supercar series in Australia.

In August 2012, Ford Australia announced its purchase of FPV assets to continue the engineering, manufacturing and marketing of the brand in Australia. In preparation for Ford Australia’s manufacturing shutdown, the FPV brand and its range were discontinued in 2014, after 12 years of production and marketing.

Future As Australia is on of Ford’s five product development centres globally, they will continue to design and develop cars and trucks for the Asia/Pacific region.

Ford Australia’s world renowned Proving Ground in the You Yang mountains near Lara, Victoria recently turned 50 and the company used the milestone to remind us that research, development and design of global vehicles would continue here long term.

The You Yangs Proving Ground (YYPG) was opened in 1965 and is one of several fully equipped Ford proving grounds in the world. One of the first true tests of the fledgling facility was a 112,600km endurance run for the 1965 Falcon XP sedan, which set 49 Australian endurance records during the event.

The YYPG played a major role in developing the global Ranger and Everest, the Indian-market Figo hatch, the China-market Escort sedan and every iteration of the Falcon and Territory.

There are four primary buildings at the YYPG – The Operations Building, Vehicle Refinement and Dynamics Centre (VRDC), Emission Laboratory and Powertrain Development buildings.

Post 2017, Ford in Australia will be the largest automotive employer in the country with about 1,500+ highly skilled employees including the country’s only design and engineering team developing vehicles for the globe.

While the last Falcon Ute marked the end for many production line workers, Ford confirmed up to 160 of its 800 manufacturing employees will be redeployed to its engineering division.

Bitter-sweetly, they will work on the next generation of vehicles such as the Ford Ranger ute, designed and engineered locally but made in Thailand where manufacturing labour costs are one fifth the rate in Australia.

“Ford Australia invented the ute, perfected it with the Falcon ute and is building on that heritage with the Ranger, which our local team will continue to develop as we become the country’s largest auto employer,” said Ford boss, Mr Whickman.

Ford excluded media from capturing the last ute’s historic moment because it wanted production line workers to commemorate the occasion in private.

“We thank our loyal customers and the Ford team, with special thanks to our manufacturing employees, for making the Falcon ute a local legend and one of the longest running vehicles in the world,” Mr Whickman said.

The final examples to come off production line will be kept by Ford as museum pieces. Source: “The Automotive Engineer”, Journal of the Institute of Automotive and Mechanical Engineers, Nov/Dec 2016
