Kuranda StoryLocatedinthemiddleofWorldHeritageRainforest,1,000feetaboveCairns,theKurandaareaisthetraditionalhomeoftheDjabugaypeople,whoknowKurandaasNgunbay-‘placeoftheplatypus’.Theymaintainedsettlementsforthousandsofyears,makinguseofthepermanentwaterandabundanceofbushfoods.
ThefirstEuropeanssettledherein1885andthefirsttownsurveywasfiledin1888,inanticipationofarailwayconnectiontoCairnswhichreachedKurandain1891.Whilethefirstwaveofsettlementwasbasedontimberfelling,agricultureandgrazing,Kurandaquicklybecameknownasatouristdestination-‘thehealthresortofNorthQueensland’,andacoolmountainretreatawayfromthehotandhumidconditionsofthetropicalcoast.
TheKurandalifestyleprompteda‘hippyinvasion’inthe1960s.ThealternativelifestylemovementprovidedthebaseforvibrantartsandcraftsthatgaveKurandaitsfirst‘marketeconomy’.Thiscommunitywelcomesyoutotheirvillage.AstheDjabugaysay“GubunGubunGaling”(TravelSafely).
