GEELONG CRASH BADLY AGAINSTNORTH OLD BOYS

NORTH MOVE UP TO 2nd, GEELONG OUT OF FOUREight teams in first defeat - Three leaders

By GEORGE McTAGGART

Geelong suffered their second successive defeat when they put in a poorperformance against North Old Boys and were beaten by nearly 12 goals.

North's win shot them up to second place on the list - there are five team ssharing top place, with Caulfield Grammarians leading on percentage .

Three leading teams were among the eight which were beaten for the firsttime last Saturday, and after four rounds only 19 remain undefeated .

Geelong never really looked likebeating North, whose better anticipa-tion and backin,--up left Geelongfloundering. North led in the race forthe ball all day, and Geelong seemedunable to do anything right .

North had five goals up beforeGeelong scored and were 35 pointsin front at quarter-time . Geelong re-covered a little ground in the secondterm but missed many opportunitiesand still trailed by 27 points at theinterval .

North forged further ahead and helda commanding lead of more thanseven goals at the last change, andtheir 7-goal burst in the final termcarried them to an easy win .

Ormond were in a good deal oftrouble against Old Paradians until thelast quarter, when they slammed on6.8 to a point and won quite com-fortably .

Parade outplayed Ormond in thefirst half, leading by 11 points athalf-time, after keeping Ormond goal-less in the first quarter . Parade missedmany chances in the third term, which

enabled Ormond to keep within strik-ing distance .

Caulfield Grammar were always incommand against Monash Blues in ascrambly game, and were in a winningposition when they led by 49 pointsat the break. Monash matched theiropponents in the second half but wentdown by more than 10 goals .

St . Bernard's opened up a 23-pointlead over University Blues in the open-ing quarter, but the Blues fought backstrongly in the second term to beonly two points down .

The second half was a closely con-tested struggle but St . Bernard's wonby 7 points . They finished better thanthe Blues but were off the target, kick-ing only 2 goals from 11 shots in thelast term.

A 9-goal second quarter burst byCoburg ended any hopes that Ivanhoemay have had about opening their ac-count . Coburg were more than 8 goalsahead at half-time, and althoughIvanhoe did better in the third termCoburg raced away again in the finalquarter to score a big win .

Well, after medismal display onme coachin' re-turn to Amateurfooty I reallygave the fellascurry at training.

And, it paid off . My mob of blokesgot stuck into the opposition lastSaturdee and won by 4 goals . Mustadmit I was wrapped .

There's no doubtin' we're the mobfor this year's flag.

For those that knew me from yearsago I'm still the same lovable, egomaniac .

But I gotta confess the new rulesintroduced since I donned the oldfooty slippers have still got me abit tossed. Ye know kicking outabounds on the full. And that sortajazz. But with my brilliant brainnothin's impossible .

Today's game's a real cruncher .We've copped the Premiers from

last season. Anyway I've got me boysin the nick of health and althoughthe scribes don't give us a chanceI m quietly confident .

Been pretty silent on the socialfront of late . But there are a fewdo's comin' up where no doubt I'llbe sinkin' a few.

CLUB HISTORIES - No . 4

IVANHOE - THE MAGPIES OF THE AMATEURSEveryone at Ivanhoe Amateur Football Club is brimful of confidence tha t

1973 will be one of the best years in the club's history.

That is really saying some!thing, eras during 39 years in the Amateurs.

The earliest highlight was a stringof 70 straight wins immediately afterthe club switched to this competitionfrom the Sub-District League .

Under the astute coaching of formerstar Collingwood and Hawthorn rover,"Jiggy" Harris, the 'Hoes won suc-cessive D, C and B Section flags in1934-35-36 . In their first taste of ASection football, in 1937, they missedout on the four.

The 'Hoes had to wait until 1956for their first (and so far their only)top grade flag .

Players in that team included twosenior present-day club officials -president, Russell "Rusty" Burt andvice-president, John "Plumber" Miles.

"Rusty", with 250 games, has thesecond highest total of any playerwho has stripped for the black andwhites. In his present capacity he iseffectively adding to a wonderfulrecord of service to the club .

In recent years the 'Hoes havemoved between A and B Sections . In1969 there was a B Section flag undercoach and former player, Sid Neale.Sid has returned to the club this yearas assistant to the senior coach, ex-Carlton and Victorian back pocketplayer, John Benetti .

Last year the 'Hoes' spectacularfinals run from fourth position finish-ed only in the dying stages of a hardfought B Section Grand Final .

the "Hoes" have had some grea tas

Another notable achievement lastyear was the entry, master-minded byanother club "veteran", Ron Lucas, offour under-age teams in the Don-caster and District Sunday competi-tion .

These teams, ranging from Under11 to Under 17, are expected to pro-vide many senior Ivanhoe players inthe years to come .

The 'Hoes have begun the 1973season in impressive new clubrooms, which adequately complement whatmust be one of the most pleasantlysituated grounds in the competition,on the Boulevard at East Ivanhoe .

We look forward to welcoming allvisiting teams there this year. Thehospitality will be as warm, the foot-ball as fiercely competitive, and Idaas vocal as ever.
