IVANHOE PRESS GAULFIELD G ~MM.ORMOND'S STRAIGHT KICKING ROUTS GEELONGReservoir recover to draw with Carey

Bottom team Ivanhoe, who have not won a match this season, ran CaulfieldGrammarians, fourth, to 13 points in the most interesting A Section game lastweek .

Geelong were no match for Ormond, whose accurate kicking for goal in thefirst half, gave them a commanding lead . Ormond kicked 11 .2 in this periodand led by 39 points . They went on to win by almost 10 goals .

Reservoir Old Boys were held to a draw by Old Carey in a thrilling finishto the game at Elsternwick Park .

This puts an end to Reservoir's run of 26 wins in succession, but of coursethey are still undefeated in 27 games . (Their last defeat, incidentally, was in theD Section Grand Final of 1971) .

By GEORGE McTAGGAR T

Caulfield opened up well, and es-tablished a 28-point lead in the firstquarter but Ivanhoe hit back with 7goals in the second term. They hadreduced their leeway to 2 goals atthe final change but Caulfield heldthem off in the last quarter to scoreby 13 points .

Geelong were a little disappointingagainst Ormond, but the visitors'straight kicking in the first halfwould have disheartened any team .(Geelong had done much the same toMonash Blues the previous week, when they kicked 8 goals straight inthe second term and were 10-1 athalf-time) .

Monash and St. Bernard's staged aneven first quarter with the scoreslevel at the change but St. Bernard'scleared out in the second and added5.6 while holding Monash scoreless .This gave St . Bernard's a firm grip onthe game at the interval, when theyled by 6 goals and although Monashput in a spirited finish, St . Bernard'swere untroubled to win by 38 points .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER

A 9-goal burst in the second quarterleft North Old Boys well in commandagainst University Blues and theywent on to a very easy win, althoughthe Blues kicked 5 goals in the lastquarter .

Coburg's small men played a bigpart in their 46-point win over OldParadians in a game notable for in-accurate kicking by both sides . Thetotal score was 26.50, Coburg kicking16.13 and Parade 10.20 .

North are still in top place on per-centage from Coburg and Ormond, with Caulfield Grammar holding fourthplace on percentage from St. Ber-nard's .

Coburg (second) lead Ormond (third)by a margin of .04 per cent.

Reservoir couldn't get going in th efirst half and trailed Old Carey by 7goals at half-time . They turned whatseemed like certain defeat into a drawwith a magtiificent second half re-covery. Each side kicked 12 .13.

There was also an exciting finish tothe Assumption-Melbourne High game,

which MHS won by 3 points . As-sumption led by 2 goals at the inter-val but High went to a 5-point leadat three-quarter-time .

The lead changed hands five timesin a "nail-biting" last quarter .

De La Salle had lost the first fivegames before pipping UniversityBlacks by a point the week before, but scored a decisive win over OldScotch, who were out of the four onlyon percentage . De La's winning mar-gin was almost 13 goals .

The Blacks hit back with a ven-geance when they thrashed Collegiansby 137 points, while Old Trinity hadno difficulty against Kew, beating themby 16 goals .

Reservoir still hold top place, 6points clear of Old Trinity, who arenow second. Old Carey slipped tothird and Collegians to fourth .

Old Brighton knocked Fairfield outof the four when they scored a 53-point win over them, and Old Hailey-bury's 4-goal victory over Old Xaver-ians took them into fourth place .

Parkside were not troubled to scorean easy win over Uni High, and retaintheir place at the top of the list. PowerHouse beat Old Melburnians by 50points and St . Kilda CBC won easilyfrom National Bank.

Commonwealth Bank's run of suc-cess was brought to an abrupt haltby Old Geelong, although they scoredby only a goal . It was only Old Geel-ong's second win - they broke theice against Hampton Rovers the pre-vious week .

Top team State Savings Bank hadplenty to spare from LaTrobe Blacks, but Marcellin got a fright from bot-tom team Brunswick, who ran them to13 points .

Marcellin moved up to third, dis-placing Commonwealth Bank, whosedefeat caused them to slip to fourth.Alphington's big win over St. Kevin'senabled them to hold second place .

There were no real surprises in ESection, where Old Camberwell beatAJAX by 33 points in the main game .

ANZ Bank beat Footscray Tech . by2 points to break the ice, and leavethe wooden spoon with Footscray . OldIvanhoe were not troubled by Elstern_wick and Glenhuntly beat West Bruns-wick by 29 points.

AMP Society, who had the bye, dropped from first to third, Old Ivan-hoe and Old Camberwell climbingover them. AJAX's defeat put themdown to fourth . The top four are levelon points but AJAX have played agame more than the other three .

Top team Fawkner had only 9 pointsto spare from Dookie & Long. whohave won only one match. MonashWhites beat St . Bede's by 16 pointsand LaTrobe Reds beat UniversityReds by 7 points to knock them out ofthe four. Their place has been takenby North Brunswick who scored by 34points over Thornbury .

Poor kicking cost University Bluesthe top place in the Junior Sectionfour when they went down to Ormondby 17 points . They kicked 6 .14 toOrmond's 10 .7 . Ormond are now ontop on percentage . North Old Boysscraped home from University Blacksby only 4 points, and Ivanhoe sur-prised Power House, beating them by5 points .

Old Scotch easily beat HamptonScouts and Monash University woncomfortably from St. Bernard's .

There were some high scores inSection 2, where there were no sur-prises. Coburg kicked a massive 45.24(294 points) against National Bank,Old Paradians scored 34.21 (225) ag-ainst St. Bede's and Beverley Hillskicked 24.28 (172) in defeating Caul-field Grammar . Old Brighton and Park-side easily won the other games fromFairfield and AJAX respectively .

There was another draw in the Re-serves, where Monash Whites and St .Bede's each kicked 9 .8 . Of all theteams in the Reserve Sections' fours, only two suffered defeat - Fairfieldwent down by nearly 9 goals to OldBrighton and Alphington lost by 4points to St . Kevin's .

LETTER TO EDITOR

Whilst I know it is not the usualpractice for this publication to publishtetters, I hope I may, prevail uponyour generosity to bring these com-inents to readers .

The Secretary of the VAFA, Mr .Fullerton, has expressed concern todelegates about the practice of clubcaptains over-using their prerogativeof replacing club goal umpires .

Twice this season, this writer hasseen the humiliating experience of in-experienced goal umpires being re-quested to leave the arena . On eachoccasion the field umpire has "allcleared" the decisions, and in conver-sation after the game agreed that thegoal umpire's decisions were techni-cally correct . This embarrassing situa-tion has caused the writer to of-ficiate for the remainder of the gameand although I have 14 year's ex-perience of actual goal umpiring, Ibelieve it is a young man's game, andclubs should train officials accordingly .

Why don't all clubs adopt the prin-ciple of the Secretary of the VAFAwho says: "All clubs should showforbearance to all officials" . ?

Yours etc.Brian "Gympie" SutherlandCommonwealth Bank Club

SNOWSSTORM

If only yousecould see me now .I'm bent and crip-pled like an oldman. To cut along story, here'sthe go. Coupla

hours before last Saturdee's game n oless than five of me boys keel overwith the flu and are unavailable .

So I'se patch up the side with any-one 'anging around. Too late to copanyone outa of the Reserves cause theirgame wus underway and miles away .

Then to make matters worse"Jackko" and "Freddie the Dreamer"have a car prang on the way to thegame . They arrived up at 'alf time ina tow truck .

So guess what happened . Yep, I'mforced to pull on a pair of Welling-ton boots and take me place in theline up .

Believe it or not I played on theaif forward flank .

Well 'ere are the details . We won

and what an effort under the cir-cumstances .

And me. Well, I notched up a fewkicks . But crook . I'm still 'istory oneweek later with stiffness to everymuscle in me body.

I've been 'aving hot baths everyday, but me body is still blue withbruises .

Anyhow, never again. Me activeplayin' days are over. After last week,me boys are all fit and rarin' to go .So, flushed with success we're reallyafter that flag .

This Saturdee night is the clubbarbecue, so there should be a fewcameos. I'll give you'se the full drumnext week .
