THE CATS IN PAC-12 OPENERS: The Wildcats won their Pac-12 opener last season at Oregon State, breaking a three-game losing streak in conference openers. Arizona went on the road last season to Corvallis and handled the Beavers with a 35-14 win. The Cats pounded out 442 rushing yards and 594 yards of total offense in the win. It was the first time Arizona had won a road Pac-12 opener since 2009. This year, the Cats return home to open conference play. Arizona has dropped three straight Pac-12 openers at home, last winning in 2014 when the Wildcats used a Hail Mary on the final play to beat Cal. Since 2000, Arizona is 6-13 in conference openers.

TATE IS GREAT: Three games into his senior season, Khalil Tate has already established himself as one of the most dynamic players in program history. Tate has thrown for 5,048 passing yards in his career and 49 touchdowns to 24 interceptions. He has also rushed for 2,110 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has averaged 6.9 yards per rushing attempt in his career and has accumulated 7,158 yards of total offense in his three-plus-year Wildcat career. Last season, Tate started all 11 games he suited up for and posted career highs in passing yards (2,530) and passing touchdowns (26). His pass efficiency rating of 149.77 ranked second in the Pac-12 and was the fifth-best mark in Arizona single-season history. Tate is one of two Power 5 quarterbacks with at least 2,000 career rushing yards and 5,000 career passing yards, joining Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts, who spent the first three seasons of his career at Alabama, before transferring as a graduate student.

EXCLUSIVE CLUB: In the season opener against Hawai’i, Tate threw for 361 yards and rushed for 108 yards. He became just the second Pac-12 quarterback ever to throw for at least 350 yards in a game and rush for at least 100. The other? A fellow Wildcat of course in Matt Scott, who accomplished the feat in 2012 against USC. Tate did his in a road game, meaning he’s the only Pac-12 quarterback ever to go 350+, 100+ in a road game. Additionally, Tate became just the third quarterback nationally since 2000 to

LATE SEASON FORM TRANSLATES TO 2019: Tate was especially strong late in the season for Arizona last year. The quarterback missed the Oct. 20 game against UCLA game to rest a foot injury. When he returned, Tate completed 75 of 124 passes (completion percentage of 60) for 1,115 yards and 15 touchdowns to just four interceptions. He averaged 278.8 yards per game. In his first seven games, Tate completed 53 percent of his passes and averaged 202.1 yards per game through the air. He also tossed 11 touchdowns in that seven-game span. It’s also worth noting that two of Tate’s final four games came against top 20 teams in Oregon and Washington State. The strong string of performances carried over to 2019 when Tate accounted for 269 yards of total offense against Hawai’i. His role was limited against NAU in a game where Arizona scored 51 points in the first quarter, but Tate went 14 for 17 for 138 yards and two touchdowns. It marked the sixth straight game, dating back to last season, that Tate has thrown multiple touchdowns in a game. Additionally, Tate’s completion percentage of 82.4 against NAU is the highest of his career in a game in which he attempted 15 or more passes. Against Texas Tech, Tate broke his own record for longest run ever in program history by a quarterback with an 84-yard touchdown dash. He also threw his 49th career touchdown pass and surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth time in his career.

TOUCHDOWN TATE: Khalil Tate is known for his explosiveness, but even highlight reels may struggle to put into perspective how spectacular his big-play ability truly is. In 2017, Tate accounted for 26 touchdowns. He averaged 47.7 yards on his 12 rushing touchdowns, 28.6 yards on 14 passing touchdowns and 37.4 yards on all 26 touchdowns accounted for. Including his limited action as a freshman in 2016 and his season numbers in 2018, here’s a look at Tate’s career touchdowns:

Total Yards on Touchdowns (66): 1,960 Average per Touchdown: 29.7 yards Total Rushing Yards on TD (17): 664 Average Per Rushing TD: 39.1 Total Passing Yards on TD (49): 1,297 Average Per TD Pass: 26.5

EXPERIENCE PLAYS: Arizona boasts a total of 234 starts on defense this season and 157 on the offensive side. On defense, Arizona has seven players with 20 or more starts in Tony Fields (28), Lorenzo Burns (27), Jace Whittaker (27), Justin Belknap (25), Colin Schooler (24), Kylan Wilborn (22) and Scottie Young (21). Safety Tristan Cooper also has double-digit starts with 12. Offensively, 67 of the 157 returning starts come on the offensive line. Cody Creason, who has played all over the line in his career and has started his senior season at right guard, has 22 career starts to his credit. Center Josh McCauley and left tackle Donovan Laie both started all 12 games last year, while Bryson Cain started the first nine games of the season, before suffering an injury and missing the final three. Redshirt senior wide receiver Cedric Peterson leads all returning offensive players with 24 career starts, while quarterback Khalil Tate

has started 23. Running back J.J. Taylor, who was a third-team AP All-American last season, has started 19 games in his career.

IN A RUSH: Through three games this season, Arizona finds itself in a familiar situation. Arizona leads the conference in rushing with 307.7 yards per game after leading the conference in rushing each of the past three seasons. The Wildcats averaged 202.4 rushing yards per game last year, marking the fourth straight season the program has averaged 200 or more yards per game. Arizona is one of just eight programs nationally and one of three Power 5 teams to average at least 200 yards rushing per game over the past four seasons. Georgia Tech, Army, Air Force, Navy, Georgia Southern, Oklahoma and Appalachian State have also accomplished the feat. Arizona’s ability to rush the ball often ties to the success of the team. Over the past five seasons when Arizona has rushed for 200 or more yards, the Wildcats are 26-10. In games where Arizona hasn’t reached the 150-yard mark as a team, it is 4-14. Arizona is 28-8 in that span when it has a 100-yard rusher. Arizona has dominated the Pac-12 rushing scene since the start of the 2016 season and is the only program to top 10,000 yards in that span with 10,193. In fact, only Oregon, Washington and Utah have topped the 8,000-yard mark with Washington and Utah both surpassing the mark earlier this month.

Total Rush Yards by Pac-12 School Since Start of 2016 Season School Yards 1. Arizona 10,193 2. Oregon 8,931 3. Washington 8,389 4. Utah 8,355 5. Stanford 7,412 6. USC 7,276 7. Colorado 6,734 8. Arizona State 6,692 9. Oregon State 6,505 10. California 6,038 11. UCLA 4,727 12. Washington State 3,877

PAVING THE WAY: That Arizona has led the Pac-12 in rushing each of the past three seasons is certainly a testament to the offensive line. This year’s group returns three full-time starters from a year ago in sophomore left tackle Donovan Laie, redshirt junior center Josh McCauley and redshirt senior right guard Cody Creason. Robert Congel, a transfer from Texas A&M who sat out last season, started at left guard the first three games of the season, while redshirt sophomore Edgar Burrola and junior college transfer Paiton Fears split snaps at right tackle in the first three games with Burrola starting all three. On top of opening up running lanes for Arizona’s outstanding rushing production, the offensive line has also been the best in the conference at protecting the quarterback over the past three seasons. Consider that during the same span where Arizona has rushed for 10,193 rushing yards, Wildcat quarterbacks have been sacked just 70 times. That number leads the conference.

PICKS APLENTY: Arizona intercepted four passes in its season opener against Hawai’i, securing its highest total since picking off four passes against No. 15 Washington State on Oct. 28, 2017. The four interceptions were the most in a road game by Arizona since 2006 at Oregon. Three players – Jace Whittaker, Lorenzo Burns and Tony Fields II – combined for the four interceptions. None of them had an interception in 2018 after combining for nine in 2017. Whittaker and the Cats were at it again against NAU in the second game of the season. Both Whittaker and freshman Christian Roland-Wallace picked off passes, upping Arizona’s season total to six. The Cats again picked off two passes in the non-conference finale against Texas Tech with Burns and linebacker Anthony Pandy intercepting passes. Whittaker missed all of last season with an injury, but now has seven interceptions for his career and has already tied his season-high of three set in 2017. Burns had five as a redshirt freshman in 2017, but went without any last year. Fields had one has a freshman in 2017 before picking off his second career pass against the Rainbow Warriors. Roland-Wallace, a true freshman, picked off the first pass of his game. As a team, Arizona had just seven interceptions last year and only had multiple interceptions one time. The Cats have already surpassed both of those totals in three games this year. The season opener marked the first time Arizona had four interceptions in a season opener since also picking off four passes against Idaho in 2008 in a 70-0 win.

THIRD DOWN TO FIRST DOWN: Arizona is third in the country in third down conversion percentage at 58.70 percent. The Wildcats have converted on 27 of 46 chances through three games this season. The 27 conversions are the most of any team nationally with three games played. Arizona converted 15 of 21 third downs against Texas Tech, one game after converting nine of 14 chances against NAU. Dating back to 1997, Arizona has never had more than 25 third-down conversions in the first three games of the season. Just four times in that span did Arizona have more than 20 third-down conversions in the first three games of the season.

HOMETOWN HEROES: The Arizona wide receiver room has a strong Tucson feel to it with three local players in Stanley Berryhill III, Drew Dixon and Jamarye Joiner. The three Tucsonans have combined for 23 catches for 324 yards and four touchdowns in the first two games of the season. Adding to the impressiveness of it is that all three players are underclassmen. Berryhill and Dixon are both redshirt sophomores, while Joiner is a redshirt freshman. Dixon had his first career catch against Hawai’i, and then had four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown against NAU. Dixon’s four catches against the Lumberjacks tied for the game-high with Berryhill and senior Cedric Peterson. Joiner, who had four catches in the opener against Hawai’i, had one catch for 15 yards against NAU and two catches for 14 yards against Texas Tech. Dixon and Joiner were both high school quarterbacks, who transitioned to receiver. Both played their high school football in Tucson with Dixon attending Sabino High School and Joiner going to Cienega High School. Berryhill’s nine catches on the season are second on the team to Tayvian Cunningham.

THE PANDY MAN CAN: When Anthony Pandy arrived at Arizona, he showed up with two other promising linebackers in his class in Tony Fields and Colin Schooler. While Fields and Schooler both earned starting spots right away, Pandy has had to be more patient, and it is paying off now. Pandy tied for the team lead with four tackles against NAU and had two tackles-for-loss. It was the first multiple tackle-for-loss game of his career. He then earned the second start of his career against Texas Tech, and it paid off for defensive coordinator Marcel Yates. Pandy had seven tackles and an interception – the first of his career – against Texas Tech. Pandy has 17 tackles in two games and is third on the team behind Schooler and Fields. Pandy had 25 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss last season as a sophomore. For his career, Pandy now has 7.5 tackles-for-loss and 51 total tackles.

TAYLOR MADE: With 102 yards on the ground in Arizona’s home opener against Northern Arizona, junior running back J.J. Taylor crossed over the 2,700-yard mark for his career. It was the ninth 100-yard performance of his career. Taylor now sports 2,750 career rushing yards during his four seasons in a Wildcat uniform, good for ninth all-time in school history. The next player on the list – sitting at No. 8 with 2,957 yards, just 207 more than Taylor – is Nic Grigsby, who played for Arizona from 2007-10. Taylor finished the 2018 season with 1,434 rushing yards, the fourth-most in a single season in Arizona school history and the seventh-most in the nation last year. He became the 14th player in school history to accumulate 1,000+ rushing yards in a single season when he went for 212 yards in an upset over No. 19 ranked Oregon on Oct. 27. Taylor eclipsed the 100-yard mark five times in 2018, four of which came in the Wildcats final five games of the season.

I’M MR. BRIGHTWELL: Junior running back Gary Brightwell currently ranks second on the team with 226 rushing yards this season, 85 of which he picked up on a career-high 21 carries in the Cats last game against Texas Tech. He picked up two touchdowns on the ground against Tech, giving him his first career two-score game and giving him the team lead with three rushing touchdowns this season. Brightwell also leads the Arizona backfield (min. 10 attempts) with an average gain of 8.7 yards per rush. He rewrote the Arizona record books in week two against Northern Arizona – his 94-yard touchdown run against NAU is tied with Nic Grigsby (2009) for the second-longest run in school history, and was just two yards shy of tying the all-time record of 96 yards set by Trung Canidate in 1997. Through three seasons and 117 attempts, Brightwell has amassed 751 rushing yards for the Cats, good for an average of 6.4 yards per carry.

DYNAMIC DUO: Senior quarterback Khalil Tate (238 yards) and junior running back Gary Brightwell (226 yards) currently rank sixth and eighth in the Pac-12 in rushing yards, respectively. The Wildcats are the only team in the conference with two players over 200 yards rushing this season. Tate and Brightwell have combined for 464 yards on the ground this year, more than four Pac-12 teams have overall (Stanford, 460; ASU, 446; WSU, 423; UCLA, 384).

SCHOOL(ER)’S IN SESSION: Junior linebacker Colin Schooler has put together an incredible Arizona career through his two-plus seasons in Tucson, racking up 233 total tackles, 37.0 tackles for loss, and 8.0 sacks. He finished the 2018 season, his sophomore

campaign, with 119 total tackles, good for fifth-most in the Pac-12. Additionally, Schooler’s 21.5 tackles for loss during last year’s season were second-most in the conference, just 0.5 behind Utah’s Chase Hansen. Schooler led the Wildcats in tackles seven times last year, and finished second on the team twice. Over his Cats career, Schooler is averaging 8.32 tackles per game and 1.32 tackles for loss per game. He is currently on the cusp of breaking onto a pair of Arizona career leaderboards – He is 17 tackles shy of becoming just the 24th player in Wildcat history to log 250+ tackles, and is 3.5 tackles for loss shy of the Arizona career top-10 (records dating back to 1967).

He averaged 1.79 tackles for loss over 12 games last season, and through the Wildcat’s victory two weekends ago over Texas Tech has now tallied 37.0 TFL during his career. Schooler’s 21.5 tackles for loss in 2018 were the most recorded by a Wildcat player in 24 of the last 25 years, with Scooby Wright’s 29.0 TFL in 2014 being the lone exception. He is just 3.5 TFL away from breaking into the top 10 all-time in school history.

of the best performances of his young career in the Cats season opener at Hawai’I, logging five total tackles, including a career-high 1.5 tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks. His five total tackles in the opener were tied for a single-game career high. He followed it up with 1.0 sack against Northern Arizona in week two and a three-tackle, 1.0 TFL performance against Texas Tech. Across three seasons in Tucson, Harris has 40 total tackles, 7.5 of which have gone for a loss, in 19 games.

EXPERIENCED SECONDARY: Between redshirt senior Jace Whittaker, redshirt junior Lorenzo Burns, and junior Scottie Young Jr., the Wildcats feature 91 combined games of experience in the secondary. Whittaker, a cornerback, has four-plus seasons of disrupting opponent’s passing games under his belt and to that end he has broken into the Arizona career top-10 in pass breakups; he currently sits at No. 6 all-time with 31. Whittaker logged four passes defensed (PBU+INT) as a freshman, 12 as a sophomore, a career-high 16 as a junior, and six this year. He was limited to one game due to injury last season. During the 2017 season – Whittaker’s last complete campaign – he logged at least one pass breakup in seven games, including three games with three PBU. His single-game career-high came on Oct. 10, 2016 at Utah, when he notched five pass breakups. For a complete chart of the Arizona top-10 in PBU, see the sidebar on page nine. Burns, another cornerback, has 22 career pass breakups to his name and hauled in five interceptions during the 2017 season. He has also picked up 134 total career tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks during his three-plus seasons in Tucson. Burns’ five interceptions during the 2017 campaign were the most logged by a Wildcat since Trevin Wade also hauled in five in 2009. Four of Burns’ five sacks in 2017 came during a six-game stretch from Oct. 21 at California to Nov. 25 at Arizona State. Young, a safety, took over the mantle from Burns in 2018, grabbing three interceptions to lead the team and rank sixth in the Pac-12. Young saw extended action as a true freshman in 2017, logging time in 10 games and tallying 53 tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups.

LEADING THE PACK: Junior wide receiver Tayvian Cunningham has been the Wildcats most prolific passing target this year, hauling in a team-high 12 receptions and 158 yards. Cunningham has averaged 52.7 receiving yards per game, 13.2 yards per catch, and is currently tied for the team lead with two receiving scores. He hauled in his first two career touchdown catches with Arizona in game two against NAU – he finished the night with three catches for 58 yards.

“DT”: The Arizona Wildcats will honor legendary coach Dick Tomey throughout the season in a variety of ways. That will include wearing a “DT” sticker on their helmets to recognize Arizona’s all-time winningest coach. The Wildcats wore the sticker in the season opener against Hawai’i and again in the home opener against NAU. It’s a black circle sticker with a white border that says DT in the middle in white lettering. Tomey’s family was on hand for Arizona’s game against NAU and participated in the pregame coin toss, along with University President, Dr. Robert C. Robbins and the game’s honorary captain. The Tomey family also received a helmet during an in-game presentation, along with a video tribute to the late coach. Arizona will also honor Tomey later in the season for its Homecoming game against Oregon State.

NEW STAFF MEMBERS: Coach Kevin Sumlin and the Wildcats welcomed two new position coaches to the fold this year in running backs coach DeMarco Murray and offensive line coach Kyle DeVan. Murray enters the coaching world after a brilliant seven-year professional career and a one-season stint in the broadcast booth. Murray rushed for 7,174 yards in his seven years in the NFL, playing for the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans. Murray was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2014. His connection to Sumlin goes back to his college days at Oklahoma. While Murray was one of the country’s best running backs for the Sooners, Sumlin served as the co-offensive coordinator in 2007 when Oklahoma won 11 games and won the Fiesta Bowl. DeVan joins the staff after three seasons at Ball State where he served as the offensive line coach and assistant head coach for two seasons. DeVan has also spent time with the New Orleans Saints for one season as an assistant offensive line coach and two seasons as a graduate assistant at USC and Oregon State. Like Murray, DeVan played in the NFL, playing for the Washington Redskins, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans. Devan started for the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

NFL CATS: The Arizona Wildcats are once again well represented in NFL with the new season set to begin this week. There are currently eight former Wildcats in the NFL, including Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles from last year’s roster, who was signed to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad. The Wildcats of course lost one of their most prestigious alums in the NFL this offseason when Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement. The longest tenured NFL Wildcat is defensive lineman Earl Mitchell, who is preparing for his 10th professional season. Mitchell signed with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, marking the fourth different team of his career. Brooks Reed, who is entering his ninth season, and Nick Foles, beginning his eighth NFL season, also both switched teams this offseason. Reed moved from the Atlanta Falcons to the Arizona Cardinals, while Foles, a former Super Bowl MVP, moved from Philadelphia to Jacksonville. Reggie Gilbert was traded from Green Bay to Tennessee last month and has been reunited with former Wildcat teammate Dane Cruikshank, who is in his second season with the organization.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Wilton Speight threw two touchdown passes, Joshua Kelley ran for 136 yards and UCLA won its second straight game, defeating Arizona 31-30 on Saturday night.

Speight began the season as UCLA's starter but suffered a back injury during the first half of the Sept. 1 opener against Cincinnati and was replaced by Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Speight came in during the second quarter when Thompson-Robinson appeared to injure his arm while being sacked.

Kelley has rushed for over 100 yards in four straight games, becoming the first Bruins' running back to do that since Tyler Ebell had a six-game streak in 2002. Kelley's 28-yard touchdown with 11:33 remaining gave the Bruins (2-5, 2-2 Pac-12) the lead for good.

Arizona's Rhett Rodriguez was 15 of 34 for 231 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in his first collegiate start while J.J. Taylor rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown.

The Wildcats (3-5, 2-3) would have won the game if it wasn't for a pair of costly turnovers in the first half. Rodriguez was picked off by UCLA free safety Quentin Lake in the end zone to end the Wildcats' second drive.

In the second quarter, Taylor appeared to be going in for a 56-yard touchdown until Darnay Holmes forced a fumble at the UCLA 3 and recovered it in the end zone.

UCLA led 17-7 at halftime before Arizona scored 13 straight points. After Josh Pollack's 29-yard field goal brought the Wildcats within a touchdown, they tied it on their next possession on a Rodriguez 11-yard touchdown to Shawn Poindexter. Arizona took over on the UCLA 15 after Derek Boles' sacked Speight and recovered a fumble.

The Wildcats would take a 20-17 lead on a 39-yard field goal by Pollack before the Bruins would take it back when Speight threw a 25-yard touchdown to Demetric Felton.

Taylor's 1-yard TD early in the fourth quarter put Arizona back on top 27-24, but it lasted only 61 seconds before Kelley's score.

A Pollack 29-yard field goal with 6:28 remaining brought the Wildcats within a point, but UCLA would take over and run out the clock.

UCLA scored on its opening drive for the first time this season as Thompson-Robinson connected with Kazmeir Allen for a 16-yard touchdown. The Bruins extended their lead to 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter on a 40-yard field goal by JJ Molson.

Arizona got on the board with 6:38 remaining in the second quarter when Poindexter caught a 13-yard touchdown from Rodriguez. Speight's first touchdown pass would come late in the second quarter on a 24-yarder to Devin Asiasi.

Kevin Sumlin, a three-time national Coach of the Year finalist, was named Arizona’s 32nd head coach on Jan. 14, 2018. He was formally introduced at a press conference on Jan. 16.

Sumlin comes to Arizona after serving as the head football coach at Texas A&M University for six seasons (2012-17), compiling a 51-26 record including three bowl victories. He also served as the head coach at the University of Houston for four seasons (2008-11), amassing a 35-17 record. In his 11 seasons as a head coach, Sumlin has compiled an 91-50 record and his teams have played in bowl games in nine of those seasons.

During his time at Texas A&M, Sumlin averaged over eight victories per season and won at least seven games each year, while competing in what many believe to be the toughest division in college football, the SEC West. His 44 wins over his first five seasons in College Station marked the second-fastest coaching start in school history, behind R.C. Slocum’s 49 wins from 1989-93. Sumlin was the first Aggie head coach to lead his first six teams to a bowl game, and Sumlin’s teams improved the Aggies’ school record streak of consecutive seasons with a bowl game appearance to nine. His three bowl victories are tied for the most in school history. In addition, Sumlin guided Johnny Manziel to a stellar freshman season that saw him throw for 3,419 yards and 24 TDs, while running for 1,181 yards and 19 TDs en route to the 2012 Heisman Trophy.

Sumlin was hired at Texas A&M after a successful stint as head coach at the University of Houston. His final Cougar squad set a school record with 13 victories (12 prior to Sumlin’s departure to Texas A&M) in 2011 and notched the program’s highest finish in the Bowl Championship Series standings. He was named the Region 5 Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association that year and was one of five finalists for the AFCA’s National Coach of the Year award. Sumlin guided the Cougars to berths in the 2011 Ticket Center Bowl and the 2008 and 2009 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowls.

Sumlin went to Houston after seven seasons as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator in the Big 12. He spent five seasons at the University of Oklahoma under head coach Bob Stoops, where he served as both the co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach (2006-07) and special teams coordinator/tight ends coach (2003-05).

Before his arrival in Norman, Sumlin spent two seasons at Texas A&M under head coach R.C. Slocum, where he served as the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Aggies (2001-2002).

Sumlin’s coaching career has also seen stops at his alma mater Purdue (1998-2001), Minnesota (1993-97) and Wyoming (1991-92).

HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- Cedric Byrd hauled in four touchdown passes to help Hawaii escape with a 45-38 win over Arizona Saturday.

The Rainbow Warriors (1-0) never trailed, saw three separate 14-point leads erased and overcame six turnovers to record their first win over the Wildcats (0-1) in six tries.

Byrd caught scoring passes of 7 and 25 yards in the first half and added TD grabs of 35 and 30 yards after halftime. He finished with career-highs of 14 receptions for 224 yards.Arizona evened the score at 35-all with Khalil Tate's 21-yard TD pass to Stanley Berryhill III late in the third quarter, but Hawaii took the lead for good on Ryan Meskell's 34-yard field goal with 10:39 left to play.

Tate passed for 361 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-39 passing with two interceptions. He also rushed for a team-high 108 yards on 13 carries.Hawaii used two quarterbacks in the win. Starter Cole McDonald completed 29 of 41 passes for 378 and four touchdowns, but was intercepted four times. Chevan

Cordeiro replaced McDonald in the third quarter and finished 5 of 7 for 58 yards and a touchdown.

The Wildcats had a chance to tie on the final play, but Tate scrambled all the way to the Hawaii 1-yard line before he was tackled by Kalen Hicks and Manly Williams to end the game.

Jace Whittaker recorded two of Arizona's four interceptions.

Hawaii led 28-21 at halftime.

THE TAKEAWAY

Arizona: After just six carries for 16 yards in the first half, running back J.J. Taylor finished with 11 rushes for 75 yards and a touchdown. He ran for 1,434 yards as a sophomore last year, when he earned third team AP All-American honors. The Wildcats, who averaged 202.4 rushing yards per game in 2018, ran for 178 yards Saturday.

Hawaii: The Rainbow Warriors executed their lone punt of the night inside the game's final minute. Of their 14 total offensive possessions, six drives ended with a touchdown, six others in turnovers (four interceptions, two fumbles) and one field goal. They were 5 of 10 on third-down conversions and 2 of 3 on fourth downs.

• Khalil Tate’s three touchdown passes at Hawai'i night gave him 46 in his career, tied for fourth-most in Arizona school history with Tom Tunnicliffe (46, 1980-1983). Tate is three touchdowns away from moving into a tie for third place with Anu Solomon (49, 2014-16).

• Tate finished the night going 22-for-39 with 361 yards through the air. It was Tate’s fifth 300-yard passing game of his career. The 361 yards establish a new career high for the senior. His previous best was 350 last season against Colorado.

• The Wildcats combined for six takeaways (4 INT, 2 FUM) on Saturday night, the most picked up by Arizona since logging six turnovers (3 INT, 3 FUM) against Grambling State on Sept. 10, 2016.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Gary Brightwell ran for 141 yards and a touchdown on five carries, Khalil Tate accounted for three scores and Arizona bounced back from an opening loss by routing Northern Arizona 65-41 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats took it out on the Lumberjacks (1-1), scoring on their seven drives and racking up 517 yards while setting a school record for points in a half for a 51-13 halftime lead.

Arizona had 720 yards of total offense, 431 rushing. Brightwell scored on a 94-yard run, Darrius Smith scored twice, and J.J. Taylor ran for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Tate hit 14 of 17 passes for 138 yards and threw two touchdowns to Tayvian Cunningham before being replaced by Grant Gunnell with 7:56 left in the second quarter. Tate played two series in the third quarter before sitting for good.

Coming off an opening win against Missouri State, Northern Arizona had a few good offensive moments against Arizona, but dug too a deep of an early hole to ever have much of a chance.

Case Cookus threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for the Lumberjacks.

Arizona's onslaught started from the opening drive, when Tate hit Cunningham on a 47-yard score. Next series, Taylor broke free for a 49-yard run, then scored on a 25-yard burst up the middle.

Brightwell made it 21-0 midway through the first quarter, making one defender miss and racing past the rest on a 94-yard touchdown run, tied for second-longest in school history.

Tate went in untouched on a 1-yard run , then found Cunningham for a second time, on an 8-yard TD pass before heading to the bench.

Gunnell stepped in and threw TD passes on his first two collegiate drives, hitting Drew Dixon on a 9-yarder and Thomas Reid III on a 75-yarder. Gunnell added a 1-yard TD pass to Smith in the fourth quarter to put Arizona up 65-27.

• Arizona’s 51 points in the first half set a school record, topping the previous first half high of 49 in a 70-0 victory over Idaho on Aug. 31, 2008.

• The Wildcats scored 65 points against Northern Arizona, the most points logged by Arizona since beating NAU 77-13 on Sept. 19, 2015.

• Arizona picked off Northern Arizona twice on Saturday night, giving them eight turnovers (6 INT, 2 FR) across their first two contests. This marks the most turnovers created by the Cats in their first two games since logging eight takeaways against Utah (5) and Ohio State (3) to open the 2000 campaign.

• With Brightwell (141) and Taylor (102) both going for 100+ yards on the ground, the Cats registered two 100-yard rushers for the first time since the Taylor/Brightwell duo went for 154 and 121, respectively, at UCLA on Oct. 20, 2018.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Khalil Tate accounted for 314 yards and two touchdowns, Gary Brightwell capped a late 99-yard drive with his second touchdown run and Arizona grinded out a 28-14 win over Texas Tech Saturday night.

Arizona (2-1) hit a few chunk plays passing, but it was the ground game that made the difference.

The Wildcats ran for 314 yards and went 99 yards in 13 plays — all rushes — to set up Brightwell's second touchdown, a 1-yard run with four minutes left.Tate scored on an 84-yard run and finished with 129 yards on 17 carries to help overcome three turnovers.

Arizona also bounced back from shaky defensive performances its first two games, keeping Texas Tech's vaunted passing game under control most of the night.

Alan Bowman threw for 311 yards and hit McLane Mannix on an 8-yard touchdown to put the Red Raiders (2-1) up 14-13 in the third quarter.

Arizona answered on the first play of the fourth quarter, going up 20-14 on Brightwell's 1-yard TD run. The Wildcats pounded out the victory after that with their 99-yard, all-run scoring drive.

Arizona's offense was sharp the first two games, averaging 629.5 yards and 51.5 points per game.

Texas Tech has had one of the nation's most prolific offenses since the Mike Leach days and won its first two games by a combined score of 83-13.The expected offensive showdown never really got going.

The Red Raiders and Wildcats had four turnovers in a span of five possessions in the first quarter: Two Bowman interceptions, a fumble and interception by Tate.

T.J. Vasher seemed to get Texas Tech going with a diving 39-yard catch, setting up SaRodorick Thompson's 1-yard TD run.

Darrius Smith jumpstarted Arizona by turning a screen pass into a 46-yard gain, setting the stage for Tate's 12-yard scoring pass to Stanley Berryhill III.

Tate followed with an 84-yard touchdown run, but the offenses went dormant again for the rest of the half.

• With his 129-yard rushing effort, Khalil Tate became just the second quarterback in Pac-12 conference history to throw for 5,000+ yards and rush for 2,000+ yards in their career. The first to accomplish the feat was Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.

• Tate’s night was highlighted by an 84-yard touchdown run, the longest rush of his career and the longest rush by a quarterback in school history. The 84-yard sprint is tied for the seventh-longest rush in Arizona history, matching Willi Hamilton’s effort at Oregon on Sept. 16, 1972.

• The 14 points allowed by the Wildcats defense are the fewest allowed in a non-conference game since holding Northern Arizona to 13 in a 77-13 victory in 2013. Including bowl games, 14 points allowed by the Cats are the fewest for a non-Pac-12 power five team since Arizona surrendered just nine to Wisconsin in 2004.
