SALEM
Salem’s Haunted Happenings celebration is truly unique and I am sure you will have a great time. Our City is one of America’s most historic seaports and in October we take the fun-fi lled activities to even greater heights.
Spend some time exploring our historic waterfront, learn about Salem’s remarkable history in our museums and attractions, and enjoy our many terrifi c restaurants. From Haunted Happenings to Restaurant Week to Heritage Days, not to mention our many art, fi lm, theater, and jazz festivals, Salem is a vibrant city with much to deliver year-round.
While you are enjoying Salem, please be safe and mindful of your surroundings. Public safety is a top concern for us during October. Salem police and other public safety offi cials are on duty to keep Salem safe throughout the month. If you see or hear something unusual, please call 978-744-0171 or dial 911 for emergencies.
Finally, part of what makes Salem a great place to visit is that it is a great place to live. We ask for your assistance in respecting our downtown residents, monitoring late-night noise levels, and respecting private and public property. Please be aware that the City does enforce local laws strictly in October, and parking fi nes are more than double on weekends in October.
We all love October and the celebrations that it brings. By working together we can ensure a fun month for everyone.
From frights to sights, Salem has it all. Thanks for visiting Salem and we hope you return again soon. Happy Haunted Happenings!

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO VISIT SALEM?Salem is an excellent day trip, and an even better overnight stay. By staying overnight, you can take advantage of the evening walking tours, live music, and Haunted Happenings programming without worrying about a late-night drive home.
HOW BIG IS SALEM?Salem is a very walkable city. Most everywhere you’ll want to explore is less than a 1-mile walk from downtown Salem with a few exceptions ranging more from 1.5 to 2 miles.
WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN OCTOBER?Average temperatures for October are a high of 62 degrees and a low of 45 degrees. But being New England, it could be 75 degrees and sunny, or 32 degrees and snowing. Salem Haunted Happenings goes on rain or shine so dress in layers.
ARE THERE HAUNTED ACCOMMODATIONS IN SALEM?There are not any hotels, inns or B&Bs in Salem that promote themselves as haunted. But if you ask their guests, it’s a whole diff erent story. Without anything offi cial, we leave you, the visitor, to tell us: Were your accommodations haunted?
ARE THERE ANY DEALS, DISCOUNTS, OR COMBINATION TICKETS?There are! Visit HauntedHappenings.org for list of combination tickets and deals in Salem during October.
HOW DO WE GET THERE?Salem is just 16 miles north of Boston. There is train and ferry service between Boston and Salem, and train service between Salem and Gloucester, Rockport, Ipswich, and Newburyport. Complete directions and transportation information begins on page 71. WHERE DO WE START?If you are planning your fi rst visit to Salem, please start at the Salem Regional Visitor Center, located at 2 New Liberty Street. The National Park Service Rangers and volunteers can help you with maps, brochures and directions. There are also clean restrooms, a gift shop, and two fi lms. From there, you can head off to explore in any direction!
WHAT IS THE RED LINE DRAWN ON THE SIDEWALKS?That is the Salem Heritage Trail! It connects Salem’s historically signifi cant sites and neighborhoods. We recommend following it in conjunction with a map (like the one in this guide) so you don’t miss a thing.

It is not always clear why Salem is known around the world as the “Witch City.” The connection can clearly be attributed to the Trials of 1692, but the popularity of works like Arthur Miller’s 1953 play, The Crucible, and the “Salem Saga” episodes of Bewitched, which aired in 1970s, along with the growth of Witchcraft as a Pagan religion are also contributing factors.
In 1692 hundreds of innocent people in and around Salem were accused of practicing witchcraft. Nineteen men and women were executed by hanging; one man was pressed to death. These tragic events served as the catalyst for the American justice system, and today you can learn more about the Salem Witch Trials at museums and attractions, historic homes, and tours.
During the Cold War in the 1950s, author Arthur Miller used the Trials as an allegory for the blacklisting of celebrities and politicians by the House of Representatives Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Social “witch hunts,” accusations of innocent people without evidence, continue to happen around the world and solidify the Salem Witch Trials as a relevant American story worth re-telling.
Did the producers of Bewitched realize the degree to which their show would dilute the message of the Witch Trials by infusing Salem into pop culture? Local lore tells us that a studio fi re in California required some creative thinking to ensure their production schedulewas met. Bewitched was one of many shows that would tap into the Salem witch theme, including Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, Charmed, Salem, Scooby Doo, and The Simpsons. And most notably on this 25th anniversary, Salem was the setting of the popular Disney fi lm, Hocus Pocus.

The green-faced witch, born of The Wizard of Oz in 1939, doesn’t have direct ties to Salem, but she may be the connection to Halloween. The Wicked Witch of the West was a product of Technicolor. Today she has been reinterpreted as Elphaba in the musical, Wicked. It is important to recognize the green-face as a stereotype created by a fi ctional character that does not resonate with or represent modern-day Witches, who practice very peaceful earth-based religions called Witchcraft and Wicca.
Not all Wiccans are Witches and not all Witches practice Wicca. Wicca and Witchcraft are forms of Paganism that worship the divine in nature. This ancient tradition is not evil and does not involve worshipping Satan. A variety of religions and spiritual practices can be found in modern day Salem, including but not limited to Catholicism, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, and more. Our community promotes the ideas of human rights and tolerance, as refl ected in the words on the Witch Trials Memorial.
Modern Witches, fi ctional Witches, a history of people being accused as Witches – all of these things co-exist in Salem. It is no wonder this charming seaport is recognized wherever you go as “The Witch City.”
The Spirit of October at The GablesAs nightfall descends on Salem, walk the halls of two of America’s most famous homes as you enjoy exciting theatrical shows, Spirits of The Gables and Legacy of the Hanging Judge.

DO Treat Salem like the city/town you live in
DON’TLitter (we have lots of disposals around town).
32@hauntdhappnings | #SalemMA
We cap off the month-long Haunted Happenings with fi reworks over the North River, a main stage with live music at the top of Washington Street (near the train station), and bands and DJs providing entertainment around downtown.
Thousands of people choose to celebrate Halloween night in Salem, and while we encourage people to have fun, the City of Salem strongly discourages disorderly behavior including drinking in public, littering, and random acts of vandalism. Off enders will be penalized to the maximum amount allowed under the law both civilly and criminally. Please help us maintain a fun and safe downtown environment on Halloween evening.
HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU MAKE THE MOST OF HALLOWEEN IN SALEM:• SAFETY is everyone’s business, if you see something say something.
• IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY dial 911
• BE CONSIDERATE of private property and Salem’s downtown residents.
• SEEK ALTERNATE ROUTES! Take the MBTA Commuter Rail to Salem on Halloween night. Park in Lynn or Beverly and take the MBTA Commuter Rail right to Salem. Coming from Boston? Hop on the Salem Ferry from Long Wharf!
• BE PATIENT. Road closures and details are numerous on October 31 (fi nd them all on HauntedHappenings.org). If you must drive, expect delays.
• ARRIVE EARLY. Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 pm so you have time to make the most of your Halloween experience in Salem.
• FOLLOW PARKING SIGNS. Do not park in “Resident Parking” zones. The fi ne is $40, and you may be towed.
• DON’T GET STUCK. The MBTA will be closing the garage at the Commuter Rail station to cars from 8:00 pm - 1:00 am. No cars will be permitted to enter or exit this garage during those hours.
• DO NOT BRING WEAPONS, FAKE OR REAL, as they will be confi scated.
• PUBLIC CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL is prohibited.
• TRIPLE FINES ARE IN EFFECT on October 31. This means citations for illegal behavior, including public drinking, vandalism, and littering, could have fi nes up to $300.
• THE PARTY ENDS AFTER THE FIREWORKS. Plan to depart at 10:30 pm, as police and public works department will be clearing the streets and sidewalks.
Visit HauntedHappenings.org for complete information on Salem Haunted Happenings and Halloween night in Salem, Massachusetts.

REGIONAL ACTIVITIES
39 HAUNTEDHAPPENINGS.ORG
25TH ANNIVERSARY OF
Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy debuted 25 years ago, on July 16, 1993. The story features the Sanderson Sisters, who are executed as witches and brought back to life 300 years later when a teenager named Max lights the infamous black fl ame candle on Halloween. Max, his sister Dani, crush Allison, and Binx the cat must then work together to put an end to the Sanderson Sisters once and for all. Many of the scenes in the fi lm were shot in Salem and you can see some of these locations while visiting Salem today.
The opening scenes of the fi lm, featuring Binx as a human prior to being cursed, were fi lmed in Pioneer Village, a living history museum located at Salem’s Forest River Park. Pioneer Villagewas built in 1930, as America’s fi rst living history museum. Tours are off ered seasonally June through September, with special events on select dates in October.
Max and Allison’s high school is the Phillips Elementary School building which ended its run as a functioning school in 1992, making it a prime location for exterior footage during fi lming. While the building is not open to the public today the exterior can be viewed from Salem Common.
HOCUS POCUS
40@hauntdhappnings | #SalemMA| AM
Photo: The exterior of the Ropes Mansion was used as Allison’s House in Hocus Pocus
One of the most memorable scenes in the fi lm was when Max attends the Halloween party at Allison’s house. The exterior was fi lmed at the Ropes Mansion, one of the most prominent 18th-century homes in Salem. The Mansion (318 Essex Street) is part of the Peabody Essex Museum collections, and the gardens in the rear of the property are free to visit and open to the public.
The other classic party scene was fi lmed at Old Town Hall in Derby Square. Famous in the fi lm for Bette Midler’s rendition of I Put a Spell on You the building is now a museum and community space. The second fl oor sets the stage for live performances of Cry Innocent, June-October.
Many of the outdoor scenes were fi lmed on Salem Common, where the fi lm is shown each year during Salem Haunted Happenings as part of the Magic 106.7 Haunted Movie Series. This year’s showing of Hocus Pocus takes place on October 6, and you can view all of this year’s fi lms and other events beginning on page 8 and on HauntedHappenings.org.
Max and Dani’s home in the fi lm is located on Ocean Avenue (about a mile outside of downtown Salem). While Hocus Pocus fans may view the exterior of the home from the street, please be aware that this site is PRIVATE PROPERTY and should be treated with respect.
The daytime cemetery scenes showing Max interacting with his new, not-so-welcoming classmates were fi lmed in nearby Marblehead at Old Burial Hill, one of the oldest cemeteries in New England.
