MESSAGE FROM

THE DIRECTOR

As you may know, the Smithsonian Institution (SI) was created for the increase and diffusion of knowledge. Within the pages of this report you can find many examples of how, in FY16, academic appointees (interns, fellows, and research associates) at SI have helped spearhead that worthy cause.

FY16 saw increased numbers of interns, fellows, and research associates, reflecting the work of the Office of Fellowships and Internships (OFI) and hundreds of colleagues across SI to strengthen, diversify and develop academic appointment opportunities. As technology, disciplines, audiences, sources of funding, and regulations evolve, so too have strategies SI employs to ensure that systems related to academic appointments are streamlined, processes are transparent, programs are relevant, and that internship, fellowship and research associate appointments at SI are the very best they can be. By the way, this report is interactive! Please be sure to click around. I read this report with pride and optimism about the future and hope you will too.
