About seven orcas werespotted seeking a sting-ray lunch in Kawau Bayon Labour Day.

Their visit delightedboaties and beachgoers.

Spotted off Tawhara-nui, Snells Beach, AlgiesBay, and Kawau Islandat times during the day,the two groups were alsobeing watched by orcaresearcher Ingrid Visser.

The Whangarei-basedscientist knows many ofthe 200 or so orca livingaround New Zealand bysight and has names forsome.

A female and her calfalong with four maleswere in one group, withDr Visser recognisingtwo of the males as Benand Nobby.

‘‘These two were hunt-ing stingrays andsharing their catch just afew hundred metres offthe beach,’’ Dr Vissersays.

‘‘We saw Nobby andBen take at least 10 raysover the course of a fewhours – they took alleagle, long-tailed andshort-tailed rays in thegeneral area of Kawau,Snells and Algies.’’

Another group of fourwere further out to seaand included a young

male Putita, which DrVisser helped rescue atRuakaka in July after hewas stranded, his olderbrother Rua and theirmother Yin with a youngorca.

All the orca Dr Visserrecognised had beenstranded at least once atsome stage, which shesays reflects the type offood they eat.

‘‘They hunt in a veryhigh-risk manner –chasing rays in shallowwaters – which results inthem occasionally get-ting stuck,’’ she says.

Orca – sometimescalled killer whales – arerecognisable by the dor-sal fin shape and nicks.

This summer Dr

Visser encourages orcaspotters to contact her on0800 SEE ORCA – 0800-733-6722 – and to viewphotos on her websitewww.orcaresearch.org/identify orca.

As marine mammals, orca, other dolphins andwhales come under Con-servation Departmentjurisdiction.

DOC should be contac-ted on 0800-DOC-HOTline, 0800-362-468,when sighted, particu-larly if the animal is dis-tressed or tangled.

People should stay 50metres away and boatsshould travel no fasterthan idle or avoid wakespeed within 300 metresof any marine mammal.

Couple warns of scam➤ HOW TO MAKE COMPLAINTS❚ Complaints about phishing email scams trying to getpeople’s credit card details or personal information can belodged with the Internal Affairs Department http://complaints.antispam.govt.nz/❚ The NZTransport Agency urges anyone who inadvertentlyprovided their driver licence details on the counterfeitwebsite to phone its contact centre on 0800-822-422 andhave their licence cancelled. It offers to waive thereplacement fee.

A DRIVER licence scamcaught Neil and DianeMcKay of Orewa.

They became suspiciousafter providing their detailsand are now renewing a cre-dit card and driver licence asa result. It’s a lesson forothers, they say.

‘‘We want to warn peopleabout this,’’ Mr McKay says.

They received an emailasking them to providelicence details to a websiteand pay a $2 fee. He paid bycredit card but then found theamount taken out was $5.They cancelled the credit cardbut later found a further $730taken out. Mr McKay hadjust renewed his licence and

contacted the NZ TransportAgency about his suspicions. Now after reading our Octo-ber 28 P3 story about thewebsite the agency says is

counterfeit is getting a newdriver’s licence.

The agency is waiving thefee for the licence replace-ment and Mr McKay says his

bank is also reversing the $5credit card payment andhopes to get the $730 backtoo.

‘‘All the agencies have beenfantastic with their help,’’ hesays.

The McKays say they feel alittle foolish falling for thescam but Mr McKay says thewebsite is very plausible andprofessional looking.

He believes many othersmay have been duped intoresponding as well.

The couple consider them-selves fortunate to escape thescam unscathed but say it’sinconvenient having to renewthe licence and card.

More than 500 calls were

received in relation to thescam by Friday morning, thetransport agency says.

It has provided 150replacement licences so far.■ The McKays were alsoasked to confirm an eBaypayment of US$47.85,purported to have been donethrough PayPal, and to clickon a link if they disputed thecharge.

Again they would have hadto provide credit card orbanking details to claim anyrefund.

They don’t use eBay butnote the email address –[email protected] –is the same one used for thedriver licence phishing email.

Scammer gets earful

Send them packing: Warkworth woman Colleen Carter was having none of it when phishingscammers rang her.

By DELWYN DICKEY

Several phone calls, includ-ing three on one day, saw afeisty Warkworth woman‘‘losing her rag’’ at scammersasking her to run a pro-gramme on her computer toremove unwanted emails orbugs.

When the first call camein a suspicious Ms Cartersimply refused. Then afterchecking with her son – acomputer consultant whoconfirmed it wasn’t a goodidea – she was even moreadamant. After asking forthe phone number of theperson calling she was givena number which didn’t makesense. But when the thirdcall of the day came right inthe middle of a televisionnews item about the same

scam she says she had hadenough and ripped into theforeign sounding man on theother end of the phone, tell-ing him he should beashamed of himself.

The new scam is hittingboth New Zealand and Aust-ralian owners of Windowsoperated PCs. Callers askPC owners to start WindowsRun and to go into theWindows Event Viewer sys-tem which can bring up‘‘error’’ icons on screen. These are often trivialmessages to do with theoperating system but canconvince the owner theircomputer needs ‘‘fixing.’’

One version has it that theunwary is charged hundredsof dollars by credit card for aprogramme which is thenrun through the computer.

Scientist challenges global warming

Doug Edmeades

By LES WATKINS

A prominent scientistwho claims ClimateChange Minister NickSmith is creatingunnecessary fears aboutglobal warming will chal-lenge his views nextTuesday at a meeting.

New Zealand ClimateScience Coalition agri-culture spokesman DougEdmeades will speak atan Orewa Rotary Club

dinner on November 9.Dr Edmeades will

explain his anxietiesabout ‘‘a dark shroudedhand’’ which he says isthreatening scientifictruths and confusingKiwis.

‘‘Dr Smith is mislead-ing the public in anattempt to convincethem that the recentlyintroduced EmissionsTrading Scheme is goodfor them,’’ he says.

Dr Edmeades de-nounces informationgiven by Dr Smith in apromotional pamphletand a series of talks.

One of the key pointshe contests is the officialline that global tempera-tures are being driven upby increasing carbondioxide.

‘‘That is grossly mis-leading for a number ofvery important reasons.

‘‘For instance, clear

evidence from ice-corestudies shows thatchanges in carbon diox-ide concentrations followchanges in temperatureby about 600 to 800years.

‘‘Carbon dioxide doesnot drive temperature.

‘‘It is the other wayaround.

‘‘The Earth has beenthrough many periods ofwarming and coolinglong before humans

arrived, before agricul-ture was intensified andbefore fossil fuels weredeveloped.

‘‘Global temperaturessince the last glaciation, about 10,000 years ago, have sometimes beenhigher than at present,’’Dr Edmeades says.

‘‘Even the Intergovern-mental Panel on ClimateChange accepts that thewarming which occurredfrom the end of the Little

Ice Age – about the mid1850s – to about 1940was not caused by carbondioxide.

‘‘The sun could be thecause.’’

Farmers’ outcry leads tosmaller district plan area

West Coast policy area: Ashadow of the originalproposal sees rezoning forenvironmental protectionin the west.

By DELWYN DICKEY

A farmers’ outcry inMarch has led to theRodney District Councilchanging its West CoastDistrict Plan priorities.

Farmers were out-raged about a proposedzoning change thatwould seek greater pro-tection for westernrural areas and out-

standing coastal land-scapes.

The council originallyproposed new rules for aWest Coast Policy Areacovering the SouthHead Peninsula andmuch of Rodney’s westcoast.

But farmers, horticul-turists and forestersraised concerns thatrestrictions might seethem unable to do somefarm activities like fenc-ing without a resourceconsent.

The adopted WestCoast Policy Area is

consistent with Signifi-cant Landscape Sensi-tivity Quality areasidentified in the Auck-land Regional PolicyStatement.

Within the revisedarea, controls on build-ings have been alteredto permit the develop-ment of farm accessorybuildings that are 50square metres or less.

The rules relating tofencing, artificial shel-terbelts and stockyardshave also been clarified, making it clear theseare also permitted.

1 in 20 children mayhave an auditory

processing disorder

Auditory ProcessingDisorder (APD) isa seriously under-recognised hearingproblem that is anunderlying cause oflearning difficultiesin thousands of NewZealand children. APDis not detected bystandard hearing tests, but it can be diagnosedand it can be treated.

A new specialistclinic for children withAPD, SoundSkills, has been established inThe Parenting Place inGreenlane. SoundSkillsexpert team ofaudiologists, speech-language therapistand education adviserprovide specialisedtesting and treatmentprogrammes. They alsohold free seminars forparents to learn moreabout APD.

S o u n d s k i l l sAudiologist Dr BillKeith says APDaffects an estimated 5%of children and most go

undiagnosed. APD oftenshows up as a learningproblem and causesunder-achievementbecause these childrenare missing out onvital information. Theproblem lies in thehearing pathways andcentres in the brain.Children may be unableto extract or retainthe message that theyneed to from spokeninformation, especiallyif there is backgroundnoise.

APD requiresspecialised testing andindividualised treatment. But, says Dr Keith, there is good evidencefor the effectiveness of anumber of treatments.

Toll andretolledI have two questions andtwo complaints.

Now that we are partof Auckland (I live inWellsford) does thatmean the phonecompanies are going torecognise the fact andmake it free-callingfor the greaterAuckland?

I notice to call the newAuckland Council it’s atoll.

One of my complaintsis road cones.

They seem to beeverywhere where workisn’t happening, or lefton the road for a longtime.

People end up notbelieving in the signsand break the law. Iwent via State Highway16 to Silverdale and agood 20 percent of thetrip was at 30kmh and Ididn’t see any work goingon. Crazy!

Last thing is thetunnels.

I haven’t paid the feesince they openedbecause of rain, too manypeople at the pay stationor not passing either ofthe two places to pay onway back.

I have been sent feereminders plus a $2administration fee and awarning of a $40 fine.

I have treated it as an

account and have let itadd up because there isnowhere to pay inWellsford and I don’thave a credit or debitcard.

And I thought theywouldn’t add a $40 finebecause they hadn’talready.

But in the last week Ihave received twoenvelopes with a total of14 fines, five times intotal of what I owe.

If we could pay at aPostshop maybe so muchof the $2 fee would not besucked up inadministration.

If power companieslost such a big chunk ofincome on admin theywould be broke, or powerwould cost 10 times asmuch.

I know I had warningson all letters of possiblefines but if they enforcedit the first time I wouldhave paid every time orgone the other way.

I feel ripped off.Make it one more

question.Am I the only one to be

caught out like this withthe tunnels or is this theway they make most oftheir money?

These aren’t easytimes and I know manypeople that the system –on many issues – fails tohelp or consider.

p!

T his month’s Plant Talk is inspired by the chirps of tui all around me. They are noisy

little critters but delightful to listen to.There are also lots of the quieter but just as impressive kereru (native pigeons) wafting about as well. The pigeons have been gorging themselves on the berries of our Syzygium paniculatumtree (Australian rose apple) and the tui have been feeding on the early flowering cherry as well as a bowl of sugar water our neighbour has put out for them. She has had as many as 16 at a time around the bowl of syrupy water. (A recipe on Forest & Bird’s website suggests half a cup of sugar dissolved in one litre of water.)For lots of our customers, one of the driving forces for their plantings is to provide food for the birds, and it’s not hard to do, with plenty of fruit and/or nectar producing plants to choose from.Right about now, we’ll see beautiful kowhai start flowering throughout Rodney. Birds love the long, golden hanging flowers, especially the tui and kereru. Puriri is another favourite, with almost year-round pink flowers for the nectar eaters such as tui, bellbird and silvereye. The flowers are followed by large red fruit, eaten by tui and kereru.Being frost tender, puriri is not easy to grow in all situations, but it’s certainly a great food provider.Other big-growing natives with good tucker for the birds include karaka, with its large yellow to orange fruit (that only the kereru can manage), kahikateawith its little orange fruit, rewarewa(nectar-rich flowers), pohutukawa(nectar), titoki (red and black seed capsules), rimu (autumn fruit) and taraire (dark purple autumn fruit) .

Other fruit or seed producers among the natives include pittosporums, cabbage trees, corokias, nikau, coprosmas, whiteywood and matipo. Griselinia littoralis (kapuka), is well known as a garden hedge; less well known is its ability to produce a great crop of yummy black berries for the birds.Tui can’t resist the nectar in the flax flowers which appear on tall spikes in summer. Phormium tenax (swamp flax) and Phormium cookianum (mountain flax) flower at slightly different times,so some of each is good from the birds’ point of view. The popular astelias, which look a bit like flax, with silver-toned strappy leaves, have small fruit for our feathered friends, as does another flax lookalike, the small-growing, shade-loving Dianella intermedia. Native plants aren’t the only source of food for birds – many introduced species also bring the birds, including bottlebrush, melaleuca, Eucalyptus ficifolia (scarlet flowering gum), melia, viburnums, dogwoods (with their strawberry-like fruit) and the grevilleas. The latter come in many shapes and forms. The cultivar ‘Ned Kelly’ is a particularly good shrubby grevillea for your garden, growing to about 1.5m,with large orange to red flowers almost year round — great colour when used in mass plantings on banks or borders. For something a bit different, kereru love the flowers and juicy new leaves of the golden weeping willow in spring.

Quick fixes for yourgarden

With the count down to summer parties, barbecues and Christmas now offi ciallyunderway, minor panic can set in aswe worry about how to get the gardenlooking good in time. There are some very easy options that can make quite a difference. A fresh layer of bark mulch works wonders. It hides a multitude of problemsand will instantly give your garden a lift. Get rid of your weeds first, either byspraying or pulling by hand, then eventhe thinnest layer of mulch will make a difference immediately. But a thick layer (10 to 15cm deep) is much better, because it has the added benefit of keeping yourplants moist through summer, and suppressing the next crop of weeds.Other products such as river pebbles willhave the same effect. In the plant department, coloured fl axesare perfect for providing immediate impact. Use them for filling in any gapsin your garden that need a lift. Plant three or four of one colour to make astatement.Flaxes, along with astelias and dwarf shrubs such as Tahitian pohutukawa, thedwarf bottlebrush Little John, dwarf agapanthus, hebes or native grasses, areuseful for covering up unsightly barepatches at the base of taller shrubs and adding an attractive layered look.Maybe a new hedge is needed to defi ne a space or give an edge to the garden. Your new plants dont need to be huge tomake a difference its surprising what a difference a neat row of even quite small plants can make. This winter we managed to do someplanting around our own property (yes, nurserymens gardens are a bit like

mechanics cars), and one of our little projects was a row of buxus (box) along one edge of our house drive. We usedbushy little plants of about 20cm high, spaced at 20cm apart. The plants weresmall, but the effect was immediate, giving a neat defined edge to what had been a rather scruffy space between the drive and the paddock fence. Now, the newly planted buxus accentuates the flowing curve of the drive and adds a bit of polish.Lonicera (box honeysuckle) is anotherfavourite for low, smart hedges to accentuate the curves in a borderplanting, or to complete a formal garden. With its little green leaves, its often usedas a substitute for buxus, but is muchfaster.Bigger growing hedges, such as griselinia, pittosporum, photinia or corokia can beused to hide untidy areas in your gardenor the neighbours garden. When you have planted your new hedge, trim it straight away, taking just the tipsout of the shortest plants and cutting back the taller plants so they match theshortest. Instantly, it starts to look likea hedge. And while youre out there with the clippers, give the existing hedges a trimfor Christmas as well. Another gardenspruce-up trick for the party season is to get the lawn looking sharp. Aim to mow it weekly, so there are no big windrowsof dead grass, and trim the edges to keepthem neat. This is my last Plant Talk for the year. Back again next autumn. Meantime, happy gardening.Email: [email protected]

Market perfect for parentsEven in a recession people still love toshop – a major reason why second-hand markets are growing in popu-larity. Two local mums are taking it astep further by hosting a market sell-ing items for children on Saturday,November 13.

Nicola Canfield and Natasha Duffettare inviting parents to de-clutter their

homes and sell things their childrenhave out grown. More than 30 stallholders will gather at the Orewa Com-munity Centre, to hold Orewa’s firstGood as New Kids Pre-Loved Market, where you will be able to buy anythingfrom a few simple Christmas stockingfillers to furniture for a nursery. Themarket will run 9am-12 noon.

New Orewa funeral home manager

Graeme Rodgers: Funeral director, Forrest FuneralServices Hibiscus Coast

Browns Bay local resi-dent Graeme Rodgershas been appointed theassistant manager ofForrest FuneralServices, located at theentrance to the GlenRoad shopping centre inBrowns Bay.

Graeme has lived inBrowns Bay for 30 yearsand during that time hasworked on the NorthShore and on the Hibis-cus Coast as a funeraldirector and in the FireService.

He will take over themanagement of Forrest’sOrewa premises, whichinclude a spacious newchapel and cateringfacility.

‘‘Locals say they reallyappreciate the restfulatmosphere in the chapeland the indoor-outdoorarea for the family to gettogether over a cup of teawhen the service is over,’’Graeme says.

‘‘We’re really proud ofour premises and of thefriendly, expert service

we provide our families.’’In his 30 years in the

funeral industry,Graeme says he hasnoticed quite a change inthe way people respondto a death in the family.

‘‘A funeral has becomemuch more a celebrationof someone’s life. Peoplelike to have a lot moreinvolvement in the ser-

vice now, often knowingexactly what they want,’’Graeme says.

‘‘These days, a lot ofpeople come to us withtheir plans already wellunderway. They knowthe music they want tohave at the service, thereadings, the familymembers to be involvedand so on.

‘‘Sometimes it can getquite involved. We makesure it’s all recorded, sotheir wishes will beknown and so their fam-ily can be spared unnec-essary worry about what

they would havewanted.’’

When disaster strikes ...

Heads FM: Veteranbroadcaster Mark Perryfounded Heads FM sixyears ago, and now thestation is switching tosolar power backup.

During an emergency, radio communication isvital in keeping com-munities informed.

But what if the radiostation’s power goesout too?

This is the questionthat led Heads FM inMangawhai to installsolar power backup. .

In winter 2006,hurricane-force windsclosed roads, blewdown trees and cutpower for up to amonth, and Heads FMwas off air for a week. The station has becomea reliable source ofemergency informationover the past year’snumerous tsunamievents, and so founderand veteran broad-caster Mark Perrythought it was time toensure it could keep

broadcasting no matterwhat.

With an environ-mental focus foremostin his mind, yet stillwanting to be a reliablemedia vehicle for civil

defence purposes,Mark says his aim is toavoid ‘‘noisy, fossil-fuelguzzling generators’’ byinstead relying onrenewable solar energyto charge a batterybank to keep the sta-tion on air in times ofpower cuts.

Heads 106.4FM isMangawhai’s only localradio station andstreams live via itsFacebook page.

The new solar sys-tem is on grid, whichmeans it converts anysun energy availableand feeds it into thegrid.

The backup batteriesare charged by the sunand only kick in whenthere is a power cut.

These units providepower for about twodays without sun.

‘‘I was quite shockedwhen I heard that wewon because I had beentold that first-timenominees don’t often winthe award.

‘‘We feel very hon-oured. The judges couldobviously see our heartand vision for the busi-nesses,’’ she says.

The number of contest-ants was up on last year

Kaipara mayor NeilTiller is impressed withthe large number ofKaipara entrants anddelighted that a localbusiness won the retailsection.

osteoporosisYou might already have osteoporosis (weakening of the bones)

- but you won’t know it until a bone breaks.40% of women over 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime.

An osteoporotic fracture can mean the end of an active lifestyle whetheryour passion is walking or skiing, golf or tennis.

In the past osteoporotic fractures were an accepted part of ageing.Nowadays osteoporosis can be diagnosed and treated even before a bone breaks.DEXA Bone Density Scans are the most accurate tool for diagnosing osteoporosis.

Please think about it. Osteoporosis is one of those thingswhere a stitch in time can save nine.

Fire service openday draws crowd

Entertaining: Around 8000 people showed for the FireService demonstrations and a record 12,000 to thefireworks display later in the evening.

Truck tow: Volunteer fire fighters won the annual police v firemen truck tow, beatingeven Ronald McDonald who helped the security guards and police officers team.

By CARALISE MOORE

Silverdale VolunteerFire service’s open day atOrewa went off with abang despite threateningweather earlier in theafternoon.

Organisers countedaround 8000 people forthe Fire Servicedemonstrations from3pm to about 12,000people for the fireworksdisplay from 8.30pm.

The event wentbrilliantly, Rodney fireservice volunteer sup-port officer Ted Fullersays.

‘‘At noon on Saturdayis was pouring with rainand all the electricalequipment was gettingwet,’’ he says. ‘‘Wethought we may havehad to cancel the fire-works and evening sec-tion. But after waiting alittle while all of a sud-den it cleared up and wewere extremely happywith the turnout.’’

The air events werecancelled because of theweather but the majorityof planned displays wereunaffected.

After reeling from adefeat last year, fire ser-vice volunteers cameback with a vengeancefor the 50 metre fire

truck tow competitionagainst police and secur-ity guards.

‘‘This year thevolunteers towed a firetruck the fastest, andbeat the police, securityand even Ronald McDon-ald who was on theirteam,’’ Mr Fuller says.

While Silverdale FireService co-ordinated theevent, Mr Fuller thanksother brigades for theircontribution, including

Warkworth, Manly,Mahurangi and Kau-kapakapa services.

Organisers also calledin extra support frompolice and security tohelp disperse the crowdafter the event after afew problems at lastyear’s event.

‘‘This year everyoneseemed to go home withno major incidentsreported to us, which isgood,’’ Mr Fuller says.
