LMC ready to run11th Annual LMC Steven C. Silcox Spring Training 5K/10K Run/Walk slated for April 18
ST. JOSEPH, Mich. — With boating season just around the cor-
ner, the Heritage Museum in St. Joseph is planning a nautical history treat to offer visitors.
At 6:30 p.m. April 9 at the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center will host a program by Frederick S. Upton fellow David Kohrman. Kohrman will present the history of the boat building industry in Benton Harbor as experi-
enced by the Robinson Marine Construction Company.
Robinson Marine was one of the three largest boat building firms in the twin cities area. Between 1925 and 1955 the company pro-duced hundreds of hand-made wooden watercraft ranging from exquisite cus-tom motorboats to military craft for the government dur-ing the Second World War.
The talk will be illus-trated with images from the
Heritage Museum’s new Robinson Marine collec-tion. Kohrman will also tell the story of how the muse-um obtained these valuable images and the process it took to conserve them for future generations.
Admission to the pro-gram is $5 and free for stu-dents and members of the Heritage Museum. The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center is located at 601 Main St. in St. Joseph, Michigan.
Current exhibits are “The Big Three: Boat and Shipbuilding in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph,” Lighting the Way: Fresnel Lenses from St. Joseph’s Lighthouses,” and “In Style: 50 Years of the Heritage Museum’s Fashion Collections.” Opening in May will be the exhibit, “Work and Play: Sports in Southwest Michigan.

We Invite You To Celebrate With Us At Our
Festive Easter CommunionSunday, April 5th at 9:30am
N
Easter is upon us and if any holiday is cen-tered around eggs
then it’s certainly Easter. Dying eggs, hunting for eggs, serving eggs at the post-church brunch are all essential to the secular ele-ment of Easter.
In honor of this holiday I thought I would share a particularly good tofu scramble I recently made for brunch. There are about
a million ways to make tofu scramble, none of which are boring. This one, however, features the sul-furous tasting black lava salt which really is the key in conveying an eggy fla-vor in any dish. There are different types of black salt, but I use the Hawaiian lava kind which is a form of sea salt. I use it in fried tofu eggs, tarts, tofu egg salad, and no scramble.
It’s very strong, so you don’t need as much as you would traditional sea salt, but it’s delicious and when done right, it really makes your dish stand out, espe-cially when serving non-vegans who are used to traditional recipes.
This particular dish is the perfect side to your breakfast pancakes or tofur-key bacon. You could also use it in a breakfast burrito, casserole, or hash. I served it with soy chorizo, flashed
greens, quinoa and a green smoothie, but I think it would be great with a warm biscuit slathered in fruit preserves or bacon.
The black lava salt can be hard to find, I suggest Michiana residents order it online. I don’t think I’ve seen it around other than
the gourmet section of TJ Maxx or maybe Whole Foods Mishawaka.

South Bend Civic Theatre presents raunchy comedySOUTH BEND, Ind.
— South Bend Civic Theatre presents the
erotic comedy/drama “Venus in Fur,” April 4 to 10, 2015, in the Warner Theatre, 403 N. Main St., in South Bend.
The play centers on Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, des-perate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochis-tic tale “Venus in Fur.” Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate
actress—oddly enough, named Vanda.
Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas’ interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increas-ingly serious game of sub-mission and domination that only one of them can win. “Venus in Fur is a mysterious, funny, erotic drama that represents yet
another departure for the multifaceted David Ives.
SBCT’s full season sponsors are Villing and Company and Alfred and Martha Choitz, the Warner Series sponsor Nyloncraft, and the show sponsor is Cressy and Everett.
Venus in Fur contains adult language and themes.
Reserved tickets are $21 with performances at 7:30 PM Wednesday through Saturday and 2:00 PM Sundays. For tickets, call the SBCT Box Office at 574-234-1112 or online at sbct.org.

Flowers speak volumes in fine artby Dr. Lori Verderame
History has produced some famous artists who were also avid
gardeners. For instance, Impressionist painter Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926) and his col-league, Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1911) tended flower and herb gardens at their famous artist colony of Argenteuil, France in the early 1870s.
At Monet’s home in Giverny, France, the artist enlisted the aid of fellow gardeners to care for his famous water lily pond which was the subject for his paintings from the early 1890s until his death in 1926. A few years ago, one of Monet’s famed water lilly oil on canvas paintings, dated 1917, sold for $24.7 million.
Imogen Cunningham and Georgia O’Keeffe of the famous early modernist art circle active in California and New York both were gardeners who brought their love of flowers and plants into their mature works of art. For instance, Cunningham’s modernist photographs focused on native flowers, leaves, branches, etc. Her famous Magnolia Blossom: Tower of Jewels held the record for the highest price ever paid for a photograph at auction. Georgia O’Keeffe painted desert flowers and other majestic blooms throughout her long and illustrious artistic career including cac-tus flowers, poppies, jack in the pulips, and various types of lilies.
In addition to these famous gardeners, there are many references to flowers in art. Different flowers mean different things when depicted as subjects in works of fine art and antiques through-out the ages.
Flowers often reference the bounty of plants, herbs, flowers, trees, nuts, and fruits that were found in the New World. Flowers were highlighted in embroidered and hooked rugs made in New England during the early Colonial period. Likewise, Baltimore album quilts showed an abundance of plants and flowers when the art form peaked in popu-larity from 1846 to 1852. Some album quilts with embroidered flowers have sold for $40,000 to $50,000.
In the 17th Century, Dutch still life paintings of flower, particularly tulips, were all the rage. The realis-tic method of painting flow-ers was important to artists of the period. The artists, so intrigued by the forms of the flowers, that they showed little regard for the season in which a particular flower grew. In these paint-ings, tulips would be depict-ed in a Delft vase along with carnations, iris, hibis-cus, zinnias, dahlias, and roses even if the various
flowers bloomed at differ-ent times of the year. The preeminent female Dutch baroque artist of this brand of still life painting, Rachel Ruysch, painted an oil com-position of Honeysuckle and Other Flowers in a Blue Glass Vase that sold for $690,600 at auction.
The color of particular flowers offer special mean-ing when found in flower gardens. For instance, lilies, white in color, are associat-
ed with the Virgin Mary, purity, and chastity. They are the flower of choice at Easter Sunday and on the feast day of the Virgin Mary.
Deep orange, dark red, and gold chrysanthemums were brought from China to Marseilles, France in 1789 and were hybridized in many forms. In Asia, mums are held in high esteem and associated with long life. One of the best known paintings of these blooms is Edgar Degas’ Woman with Chrysanthemums from 1865 in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The Dutch were charmed by carnations and often included them in watercolor albums documenting botan-ical examples. The carna-tion signified faithful love in marriage. Dutch masters including Rembrandt paint-ed these and other flowers in wedding portraits of brides and grooms. Carnations are also carved into Dutch style corner linen cupboards of hard-woods. These cupboards were traditional gifts to newlyweds setting up housekeeping. On today’s market, the old master paintings are worth far more than the antiques Dutch cupboards.
As flowers speak vol-umes, you can highlight some of your favorite blos-soms by collecting art and antiques with flowers in focus. Happy Spring!

Leader photo/CRAIG HAUPERTA little cold weather did not stop children from enjoying the Berrien County Civitan Club’s annual Easter egg hunt. Hundreds of children and their families huddled up outside the roped-off areas in 20-degree weather at Riverfront Park in Niles where volunteers had placed hundreds of colorful plastic eggs. When the horn sounded promptly at noon Saturday, the children raced in to pick up as many eggs as possible. Many placed the eggs in wicker Easter baskets, while others carried them to their parents waiting outside the egg area. The eggs were gone in a matter of minutes. The event was sponsored by the Civitan Club and area merchants.
