Hello St. Christina Family, Volunteers Are Still Needed We will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. Importantly, leadership team members and volunteers must not be part of a “vulnerable population” (that is, not over the age of 65; no underlying medical condition such as diabetes, lung disease, undergoing cancer treatment, etc.). I ask all of you who are younger than 65 and healthy with no underlying health conditions to consider assisting with one of three reopening teams:

• Set-up team. Sample duties include ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, etc.

• Greeting team. Sample duties include assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church; making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas, etc.

• Cleaning team. Sample duties include maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if you do not have your own, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

To volunteer for one of these teams either call the Rectory (773-779-7181)

or email Amy Murphy at [email protected]. Timing for Our Reopening The guidelines and measures required to reopen are designed to protect our wellbeing and that of our broader community. As Cardinal Cupich has noted, from the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper.” Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed, “that they all may be one” (Jn 17:21) and commanded us “love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (Jn 13:34). Our collective patience, willingness to help and the care we take to reopen is a demonstration of our unity and love for one another. May God grant you His peace during this difficult time and may He manifest His love and presence to you in abundant ways. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

To volunteer for one of these teams either call the Rectory (773-779-7181) or email Amy Murphy at [email protected].

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Tom Conde

A Prayer for Protection in Time of Pandemic

O Mary, you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith. O loving Mother, you know what we need, and we are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee. Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Devine Physician, for those who have fallen ill, for those who are vulnerable, and those who have died. Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure. Help us, O Mother of Devine Love, to comfort to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen. Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Adapted from the Prayer of Pope Francis by Knights of Columbus

A Prayer for Healing Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, you care for us and provide us with everything we need. You shower us with your love and mercy. You send people into our lives to help care for us, especially in time of sickness or pain. Help us to experience your presence in the midst of the uncertainties of the coming days and weeks. Heal those infected with the coronavirus and restore them to health. Ease the suffering of those who are dying and welcome into your kingdom those who have died. Give strength to health care professionals and give them your wisdom in their search for a cure. Strengthen our faith that we might be filled with hope in you. Give us patience that we might accept our own limitations. Help us know we are not alone, that you walk with us each moment of our lives. Be with us, Lord, in our time of need. Heal us in body, soul and spirit that we may rejoice in your grace and blessings in this world and come to enjoy the fullness of your presence in the life to come. We make this prayer in your name, for you are our Risen Lord, Jesus. Amen.

Adapted from our Book of Prayers – Sacred Heart Southern Missions

Our Hope and God’s Promise The Church uses these waning November days and darker skies as the season to remind us of the last things. Today’s feast, the Solemnity of All Saints, is the centerpiece of three days that point to doctrines we proclaim each time we say the Apostles’ Creed: “We believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.” And while the days and our hearts may be dark, the readings today are bright with the light of faith. John’s vision in the book of Revelation reveals dazzling angels and white-robed saints gathered in triumph around the throne of God. In the responsorial psalm we sing our longing to see God’s face, and in the second reading John writes that we are God’s children and will, in fact, see God “as he is” (1 John 3:2). This is our hope. This is God’s promise. Today we celebrate the triumph of those who already gaze on the face of God. Tomorrow we cry out for mercy with those in purgatory, who, like us on earth, still long to see God’s face.

On Being in That Number Copyright 2020 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

When the Saints Go Marching In. Great song, with all sorts of versions, and recorded by all sorts of artists putting their own spin on it. According to Wikipedia, Louis Armstrong made it a jazz standard with his recording in 1938. Fats Domino sang it. Judy Garland sang it. Bing, Elvis, and Jerry Lee sang it. Bruce Springsteen with the Session band sang it, too. The origin of the song is unclear, but “it apparently evolved in the early 1900s from a number of similarly titled gospel songs.” It’s also worth noting, I think, that “The song is apocalyptic, taking much of its imagery from the Book of Revelation…”

Enter today’s first reading. Taken from the final book of the Bible, the passage picks up just before the trumpets sound (“Oh when the trumpet sounds its call/ When the trumpet sounds its call…), which is the beginning of the end. Which is the new beginning. I think. If you’re looking for insight on The Revelation to John, go find a Scripture scholar. The book is way beyond my ken. But some parts I get. Like in today’s passage, when the great multitude robed in white calls out in a loud voice, “Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb.”

I also get what all the angels standing around the elders say as they prostrate themselves before the throne, worshiping God: “Amen. Blessing and glory, wisdom and thanksgiving, honor, power, and might be to our God forever and ever. Amen.” I get, too, what an elder says when John asks him the identity of the people in white. “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress,” the elder responds, adding, “they have washed their robes and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.”

When the Saints Go Marching In. Some versions begin with “We are all traveling in the footsteps/ Of those that'd come before/ And we'll all be reunited/ On that new and sunlit shore…” On this Solemnity of All Saints, we celebrate the untold number of saints dressed in white [some formally named as such (Peter, Paul, Francis, Anthony, Thérèse), and some not (Jean, Jim, Shirley Mom, Leroy, Greg, Tim)] all gathered on that sunlit shore. We know that we are called to the same sunlit shore by way of the message found in John’s letter today: “Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God.”

Of course, John admits we don’t know what awaits us (“what we shall be has not yet been revealed”), but we know it’s going to be good, and Jesus once again points the way (Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven…”). Per more lyrics from the song: “Now some say this world of trouble/ Is the only one we'll ever see/ But I'm waiting for that morning/ When the new world is revealed.” Especially fitting words, I’d say, as this pandemic goes on and on. And on. Here’s to Peter and Paul, Jean and Jim! Here’s to all the saints on their special day! And here’s to all of us still on the journey, saints-in-training, every one. Lord, how we want to be in that number…
