Parish Directory Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Meek and Humble God

Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel that he is “meek and humble of heart.” Yet just a few lines before this, he says that he is equal to his Father, the almighty God. So how can the Son of God be both meek and mighty? For Jesus, being meek does not mean letting people push him around. If he were meek in that sense, he could not have thrown the moneychangers out of the temple. Jesus’ meekness meant doing the will of God completely. The challenge for us comes in his words “learn from me.” We must learn to do God’s will as completely as Jesus did. First, it means that we do all that God wants of us. We cannot pick and choose what we want to do and what we want to ignore. If some things seem too difficult or painful for us, we may need more faith in Jesus’ ability to make the burden easy. For example, sometimes we may hear Jesus’ command to love one another and reserve the right to love whom we choose. Or we may reserve the right to decide which teachings of the Church we will follow. But doing God’s will completely means doing it without reservation. Second, we may try to do all that God asks, but give up if something becomes too difficult. We may say we forgive someone, for example, but when they reject that forgiveness, we become even angrier. Or we may tire of being patient with someone and be verbally hurtful. Or maybe we agree to help on a parish project but quit when someone disagrees with us. We can learn from Jesus how to do each part of God’s will to completion, as Jesus did all the way to the cross. So how is the Son of God humble? True humility means acknowledging who we are and what we can do. Jesus is simply being humble when he says that he is equal to the Father. So too, we are humble when we do not hide the fact that we are children of God and brothers and sisters of Jesus. Instead of a false modesty that claims “I’m not good enough to follow all of God’s commands,” it takes true humility to accept that we can do God’s will because the Spirit is with us to help us.

everything. I feel stressed and so unsettled. I’m worried about what is

Sew… We Need Your Help! If you can sew, we need your help! Disposable face masks are in short supply and fabric masks can help our healthcare workers and senior citizens. There are many designs online but simple is best. The instructions below for a simple mask can be adapted depending on what you have available. Tightly woven cotton fabric is best. If you don’t have flannel for the lining, use two layers of cotton fabric. If you don’t have elastic, use bias tape or fabric to edge the short end of the mask and make 10-12" ties on each corner. A collection box has been placed in the vestibule of the Oak Lawn Village Hall by the police desk on the west side of the building. The address of the Village Hall is: 9446 Raymond Avenue, Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. Please put your completed masks in a plastic bag and drop them in the box. They will be distributed as needed to local health care providers, nursing homes, etc. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. Dig into your fabric stash and be creative! Happy sewing! Since many stores will be mandatorily closed, fabric can be purchased at Walmart, Amazon or mail order from Joann Fabrics.

Queen of Hearts is on Hold until Further Notice.

Subject: Reopening Plan for St. Christina Church Amid COVID-19 Hello St. Christina Family, I pray that you and your loved ones are healthy. As you may have seen, Cardinal Cupich recently shared our multi-phased plan for reopening churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Specifically,

• Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Baptism, Reconciliation, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of 10 attendees.

• Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adoration with a limit of 10 attendees. • Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups depending on the guidelines

from the state and the capacity of the church building. Our St. Christina Reopening Plan First and foremost, it is important for everyone to understand that our efforts will prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all while maintaining due respect and reverence for the sacraments and liturgical norms of our faith. I will assemble a Parish Reopening Leadership Team with parishioner co-captains to lead our efforts. Together, we will attend required training from the Archdiocese to ensure that our parish reopening plan conforms to the guidelines developed by the Archdiocese in collaboration with civil and healthcare authorities. We will also receive a starter kit of protective and cleaning supplies, as well as guidance on purchasing/maintaining supplies ongoing. Volunteers Needed We will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. Importantly, leadership team members and volunteers must not be part of a “vulnerable population” (that is, not over the age of 65; no underlying medical condition such as diabetes, lung disease, undergoing cancer treatment, etc.). I ask all of you who are younger than 65 and healthy with no underlying health conditions to consider assisting with one of three reopening teams:

• Set-up team. Sample duties include ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, etc.

• Greeting team. Sample duties include assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church; making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas, etc.

• Cleaning team. Sample duties include maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if you do not have your own, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

To volunteer for one of these teams either call the Rectory (773-779-7181) or email Amy Murphy at [email protected].

The Reopening Leadership Team and I will make sure that all volunteers are properly trained. Please send us a message at [email protected] to indicate your willingness and ability to volunteer. From those that step forward, we will also request that some act as volunteer captains to help lead each of the three teams. Timing for Our Reopening As I mentioned, the Parish Reopening Leadership Team members and I will need to complete required training, which will take place beginning the week of May 17. Once we complete the training, we will need to review and complete tasks assigned to all parishes as part of a reopening certification process to be approved by the Archdiocese. Therefore, the soonest that any parish in the Archdiocese will realistically open for sacramental celebrations, private prayer or Eucharistic Adoration is still to be determined. However, our parish, like all others in the archdiocese, will move forward at a pace and timing appropriate for its own situation. Following our training and certification approval, at St. Christina, we will only open our church once the Reopening Leadership Team and I feel confident that we have the right volunteers in place to make it possible to reopen. Again, the need for parishioner assistance cannot be overstated. The guidelines and measures required to reopen are designed to protect our wellbeing and that of our broader community. As Cardinal Cupich has noted, from the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper.” Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed, “that they all may be one” (Jn 17:21) and commanded us “love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (Jn 13:34). Our collective patience, willingness to help and the

On Pandemic Weariness, and the Yoke that Fits Copyright 2020 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

Are you tired? I’m tired. I shouldn’t be. I’m retired, after all, and that takes a lot of the day-to-day stress off a person. I can’t imagine how tired the front-liners must be. I’m tired of the police brutality that keeps showing up on the television news shows. I’m tired of the climbing COVID-19 cases in nearly half of the states. On a more local — and selfish — front, I’m tired of people going the wrong way with their shopping carts at the grocery store. And even though Illinois is now opening up more, I’m tired of feeling uneasy about going out into the world. Now, I’m not nearly as bad as the English poet A.C. Swinburne, who opined well over a hundred years ago: “I am tired of tears and laughter/ And men that laugh and weep/ Of what may come hereafter/ For men that sow and reap/ I am weary of days and hours/ Blown buds of barren flowers/ Desires and dreams and powers/ And everything but sleep.” Still, I’m tired.

But I’ve seen some medical types on TV saying that it’s not just me. Seems tiredness/weariness/fatigue — whatever you want to call it — is in (or, as we used to say casually about a head cold or a cough, “There’s a lot of that going around”). Look at some of the headlines I found just now when searching “being tired because of the pandemic.” From today.com: “Why am I so tired? How to deal with exhaustion during pandemic.” From washingtonpost.com: “Why does quarantine make us so tired?” From healthline.com: Quarantine fatigue is real. Here’s how to cope.” I didn’t read them all, but focusing on getting enough sleep, here’s the gist of the Today piece: create a regular schedule, disengage from screens and other distractions before bedtime, don’t forget to exercise, cut back on caffeine. Oh. And I especially like this one: “…avoid working from bed if you can.”

Any discussion of tiredness/weariness/fatigue brings to mind my favorite observation on the topic. Singer songwriter Steve Goodman left us too soon, but before the leukemia got him, he gave us, “Weary, though weary is only a case/ Of being unwound at the wrong time and place.” Brilliant, and I think it comes into play with today’s Gospel passage. In the last three verses, which are specific to Matthew, Jesus gives an apparent nod to Zechariah’s Old Testament prophecy of a peaceful savior heading Jerusalem’s way when he says, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Doesn’t that sound good right now. Doesn’t that sound great right now? I don’t think Jesus is promising us a rose garden, though. I read somewhere once that the yoke Jesus speaks of won’t take away the challenges we all face, but that it will offer us peace in dealing with them. Or maybe just a little guidance in unwinding at the right time and place. Like bed, maybe. Sans work, of course.
