According to “The Pacific Institute"the drought in California has improvedconsiderably since last year. Now,Northern California has escaped thedrought. However, Southern California stillneeds a bit more rain to be considered“out of the dry.”

On January 17, 2014, California stategovernor, Jerry Brown, declared a droughtstate of emergency. The year of 2014 wasthe warmest year ever recorded inCalifornia, followed by 2016. After morethan five years of drought in California,the year of 2017 has seen above-averageprecipitation and snowpack, inspiringmany to ask, "is the drought over?"Scientists say it isn't over yet. Even though74% of California is out of the drought,places such as Santa Barbara are stillalarmingly warm. Plus, the rainy seasonisn't over yet.

Even though there is snow on theSierra Mountains (California's main watersupplier), there is still a chance that allthat snow can melt away and becomeinaccessible groundwater whensummertime rolls in. So continue to saveour water Gryphons, and hopefully wewill be completely out of the droughtquite soon.

Donald Trump was inaugurated onJanuary 20, 2017 as the 45th president of theUSA. In his first week, he signed anexecutive order for a travel ban and hasalready started talking to internationalleaders for the wall that he promised duringhis debates with Hillary Clinton. As a result,many people protested during Trump’sinauguration and participated in the variousWomen’s Marches around the world. Thepromised wall is said to divide Mexico andthe United States. The President of Mexico,however, has denied paying for this wall.There are many predictions of whatPresident Trump's presidency will bring andwhat his next actions will be as the leaderof this country.

As far as the wall goes, manyRepublican leaders are concerned with theidea of a "wall" and say a fence should bethere because border patrol agents should beable to see the opposite side. Not only that,the wall is estimated to cost $21.6 billion(way over budget) and take 3.5 years toconstruct. A fence could cut the cost by25%-50%.

Additionally, President Trump's revisedtravel ban came out on March 6th.According to Trump, it's a "watered down"version of the first executive order. Thesecond one blocks refugees from Iran,Somalia, Libya, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen(Iraq was taken off the list) for 120 days, andno one can get a green card or visa to theUS in these 6 countries for 90 days. Trumphas stated that these are appropriatemeasures to keep America safe, but onMarch 15, Hawaiian federal Judge Watsonissued a nationwide order blocking PresidentTrump's travel ban.

Badminton is the after school sport currently takingplace. Practices are held mostly on Mondays,Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are coached by Mr.Johnson, Mr. Bellomo and Mr. S. Many studentssigned up for Badminton for many different reasons.When asked why they joined Badminton, Adith N.said “I had the passion for badminton when I wasabout 6 years old and then I started playing with mydad”When asked if they would try playing another afterschool sport, Pranjal V. said “Yes, I would love to dotrack,” naming the next after school sport thatstudents can sign up for. The last Badminton gamesagainst Windermere were on March 3 and 9.

Football

The Super Bowl was on February5. This was the 51st Super Bowl. Itwas the Patriots against theFalcons. The Patriots had won 4Super Bowls before Super Bowl 51.Most people thought that thePatriots would win based on theirhistory of winning. The stats alsopointed to the Patriots. However,despite these assumptions, theFalcons managed to rack up a 21point lead against the Patriots. Noteam had ever overcome a 10+point deficit. The Patriots changedthis by tying the score at 28-28 atthe end of the fourth quarter. Thislead them into the first overtimein Super Bowl history. The gameended with the Patriots winningby one touchdown and breakingor tying 31 different records.

NBA basketball is currently happening. The Boston Celtics are leading the Atlantic Division. The WashingtonWizards are leading the Southeast Division. And last season’s NBA champs, the Cleveland Cavaliers are leadingthe Central Division. In the Western Conference the Utah Jazz are leading the Northwest Division. In the PacificDivision the Golden State Warriors are leading. And the San Antonio Spurs are leading the Southwest Division.On February 19, the NBA All-Star game took place at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The All-Star gameusually consists of star NBA players from both, the Eastern and Western conference. The players play against thestars from the other conference. The game ended with the Western Conference winning 192-182 against theEastern Conference. The game’s MVP was Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Soccer

Premier League soccer is takingplace right now. Currently,Chelsea is number 1 with 63points. Manchester City is secondwith 52 points. And Tottenhamis 3rd with 50 points. The seasonends on the 21st of May.

Hockey

Hockey season has started. In the Atlantic Division the Canadiens areleading. The Wild are leading the Central Division. In the PacificDivision the Sharks are leading. Speaking of the Sharks, their forwardPatrick Marleau scored 4 goals in the 3rd period of their gameagainst the Colorado Avalanche. This makes him the first player toscore 4 goals in 1 period since Mario Lemieux in the 1990s. Marleaualso scored his 500th goals against the Canucks. He’s one of theonly 45 hockey players to have scored 500 goals in their career.

Tennis

The Australian Open took place between January 18-31. Themen’s finals consisted of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.This final was somewhat uncommon because most peoplewere expecting #1 seed Andy Murray and #2 seed NovakDjokovic to play each other in the finals. However, bothplayers got out in the first few rounds. Roger Federer endedup winning against Nadal. The women’s finals consisted of#1 seed Serena Williams and #11 seed Venus Williams. It wasa sister vs sister match. Serena Williams won the matchreceiving her 23rd Grand Slam Title.

January 27.

What's Going on In the

Library?

There is a new shipment of books coming to the

Library. It includes titles such as One Last Word by

Nikki Grimes and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh

Bardugo.

A group of eight sixth graders have started an

activists project. It’s called Kits 4 Kidz and their

first project is to help Syrian refugees. They are

going to collect baby items in shoeboxes and

donate it to mothers and babies. They are working

with the International Rescue Committee. Right

now it is only for sixth graders and it meets on

Tuesdays on sixth grade lunches. To be an activist

in this project takes hard work and commitment,

you have to do the research, a timeline, the

connections, publicity, donations and/or money.

Hopefully in the future this will be an official club

for all grades.

Star Wars Episode 8: The movie is only releasing in December, however Star Wars fans have scraped up some information that we

know is official. We know that the movie is releasing on December 15, 2017. The director and screenplay author is Rian Johnson.

The Music Director is once again John Williams, even though he didn’t do the music for Rogue One. The title of the movie is “ Star

Wars: The Last Jedi.” Here is the main cast listing.

Theory 1: Princess Leia will die

The actor for Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher, unfortunately passed away this winter. Therefore, Princess Leia also passing away seems

inevitable. Lucasfilm publically announced that they weren’t using CGI for Princes Leia in Episode 9. The only other option would

be to have another actor act for Leia, but chances of this are minimal.

Theory 2: Snoke is the last jedi

The following theories are not as strongly supported as the last. Snoke might be the Last Jedi. Kylo Ren got his lightsaber from

Snoke and it is confirmed as an ancient model of the lightsaber. Jedha is shown in Rogue One with an ancient jedi temple. Snoke is

confirmed to be extremely old, and Luke is looking for an ancient jedi temple. This clearly shows that Star Wars is opening up info

on the origins of the Jedi. This theory was originally posted on a Reddit page by AnakinKardashian.

Theory 3: Rey’s grandfather is Palpatine.

This theory has some good evidence. In Episode III Palpatine has a battle style similar to Rey on Starkiller Base. Rey started with a

forward thrust, so does Palpatine. Rey used an overhead swing, so does Palpatine. Star Wars is also centered around Skywalkers

battling Palpatines. In The Force Awakens a Skywalker, Kylo Ren is evil, so a Palpatine, Rey, should be good. In Rey’s force vision

Emperor Palpatine can be heard screaming just like when he screamed in Episode III during his battle with the jedi. Also Kylo Ren

and Snoke are very interested in finding Rey and training her. Foreshadowing, perhaps? Her parents are hinted to be dead by Maz

Khanza and it’s too obvious that Disney is directing fans to believe Luke’s Rey’s father. It’s simply a misdirection. Rey is even

shown on the dark side of all the Force Awakens posters.

Theory 4: Finn is force sensitive

Finn’s number FN-2187 is a number that represents the Force. Princess Leia’s cell number was 2187 on the Death Star. They

are both characters that are secretly jedi. George Lucas got the idea of the Force from a short film called 2187. Finn also chooses

the lightsaber over the blaster many times, and even battles well with it on Starkiller Base, against Kylo Ren. The fact that 2187 is

Leia’s cell number is too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence. Also Finn is shown holding a lightsaber in all the Force

Awakens posters. Finn hears the screams of people in the Hasdian Sector before they were killed by Starkiller Base. He also senses

Poe’s life force.

Theory 5: Mace Windu is Snoke

Mace Windu gets blasted by Sith lightning. His face would probably be scarred after that. Also jedi have survived higher falls,

then Mace Windu. No jedi has ever died by falling, and Sith lightning has never killed. They are both bald, Snoke and Mace Windu.

And Snoke says that he witnessed the rise and fall of the Empire which means he should have been established as a character in

the prequels. Also the purple lightsaber means a balance of light and dark as red and blue makes purple. So all it would take to turn

Mace Windu to the Dark Side would be a good push. Like Anakin betraying him and Palpatine electrifying him. He shows evident

hate for Skywalkers as Snoke, possibly because he was betrayed by one.

The 89th Academy Awards was very memorable,

especially because of some events such as the big Oscar

mix-up between “La La Land” and “Moonlight”.

When interviewing Aria K. (8), she had quite a few

thoughts about the topic:

Q:How did you feel about the 89th Academy Awards?

A:They were okay.

Q:What was the best part of the Awards, in your opinion?

Why did you feel that way?

A:The best part of the Awards was when Lin Manuel

Miranda and Auli’i Cravalho sang “ How Far I’ll Go”

because it is a very good song.

Q:How did you feel about the Big Mix-Up?

A: I think that it was very sad. I felt so bad for the actors

and actresses of “La La Land”.

Q: Do you think that the whole fiasco was staged?

A: No.

During the Oscars, there was a mix up for which

movie won Best Picture. Warren Beatty

announced "La La Land" as the winner. The

stage immediately filled with the cast and crew

- but also with Oscar producers. The real winner

ws actually "Moonlight." According to Fox, "In a

statement released Monday evening, the firm

confirmed that PwC managing partner Brian

Cullinan mistakenly handed the back-up

envelope for Actress in a Leading Role instead of

the envelope for Best Picture to presenters

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.” Some

people even think it was intentional. Whether

this fiasco was done on purpose or not, this

event has made history in the Oscars.
