This year Canopy turned to the community and gathered input to guide the board and staff in the development of a new three-year strategic plan. With implementation underway, Canopy’s strategic plan will address an array of issues critical to the long-

term success and development of our organization. We aim to grow our core capabilities on several fronts—by developing our institutional resources, fine-tuning our programs and strengthening our partnerships with sur-rounding communities, sister organizations and the City of Palo Alto. One of the benefits of this process is Cano-py’s newly adopted tagline: Healthy Trees, Healthy Communities. We have these words in mind as we work closely with City staff in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto to help establish practices that protect the trees and ensure the long-term growth of the canopy that protects us. Palo Alto is blessed with one of the most beautiful array of trees in the State but the increase of infill development

and drought conditions are putting the health of our urban forest at risk. Two years ago Canopy partnered with the City of East Palo Alto to plant nearly one thousand trees along East and West Bayshore Roads. In the ground less than two years, these trees have grown tremendously thanks to a meticulous regimen of care provided by Canopy’s dedicated teams of volunteers, young interns, staff and professionals. The trees are already beginning to transform the area. We’re extremely proud of this project and would be more than happy to give you a personal tour, just give either one of us a call.Canopy is part of the social infrastructure of this area as well. Our plantings, educational programs, and advocacy work was recognized and honored with a Tall Tree Award at the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce dinner in April. And in June Canopy supporters gathered under the shade of London Plane trees for an “An Evening With Remarkable Trees”, a successful fundraising dinner with author Thomas Pakenham. We are immensely grateful for the science that shows us how we benefit from the presence of trees in our communities, to those who support our work, and for the simple pleasure of seeing a beautiful tree.

Street tree plant-ings were once

thought of as “beautification

projects.” But with 80% of our coun-

plant for another reason—trees are

as vital to a city’s infrastructure as

water, roads, and electricity.

PlantingsThe future of our urban forest depends on the care and maintenance of each and every tree, and just as importantly, on new plantings. Canopy plants climate and site appropriate young trees that will grow to provide shade, clean air, clean water, conserve energy and reduce storm water runoff. We planted over three hun-dred and fifty trees in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto during the last year. Working along streets, in school grounds and throughout parks, volunteers from Google, Cisco, Sun Microsystems, Girl Scouts, Collective Roots and Palo Alto’s high school and alumni clubs, all played key roles in different plantings. Volun-teers also took advantage of Canopy’s informative volunteer trainings, learning the nitty-gritty of tree care. Canopy extended its reach working closely with neighborhood organizers in South Palo Alto. Canopy also partnered with East-side College Preparatory High School in East Palo Alto.

Urban Forest CareTree Care With more than 1,000 new trees planted in East Palo Alto in 2007, Canopy now faces the long-term chal-lenge of ensuring the healthy growth of this urban forest. Over the past year, volunteers and staff cared for the young trees, inspecting, mulching, watering, training and pruning them, and record-ing all their vital information for future care and monitoring. So far, the excep-tional survival rate of these young trees —about 98%—is due to the meticulous level of care provided by Canopy staff and volunteers. The tender care of these young trees during their first five years is vital to their long-term survival. Young Tree Care Survey Throughout the summer, Canopy volunteers combed

through Palo Alto neighborhoods, surveying the well-being of all young street trees planted within the last five years. Now in its eighth year, Canopy’s Young Tree Care Survey continues suc-cessful monitoring of Palo Alto and East Palo Alto’s newest generation of street trees. Volunteers teams and the EPA Tree Taskforce worked together to survey about 900 trees. Some 880 households received Canopy’s Young Tree Care brochure on their doorsteps. The colorful brochure reviews tree care tips and watering techniques, helping residents take street tree care into their own hands. This year’s survey incorpo-rated tactical improvements developed by Canopy with the staff of the City of Palo Alto’s GIS (Geographic Informa-tion System) department.

Is Your Tree Thirsty? CampaignIncreasingly, Bay Area residents are torn between the idea of conserving water and needing it to care for their gardens and homes. Now in its second year, Can-opy’s Is Your Tree Thirsty? campaign provides Bay Area residents with practi-cal tips on conserving water while protecting trees. Our comprehensive educational outreach included high pro-file banners, 1,400 targeted postcards, and 3,000 emails on smart watering techniques. By planting drought-toler-ant, climate-appropriate trees and landscapes, by reducing water usage in other areas of the home and by watering trees appropriately, residents can be good stewards of the environment, con-serve our precious resources and enjoy the benefits provided by trees.

Palo Alto’s public and private trees produce enough oxygen to fulfill the needs of all Palo Alto residents. Trees create oxygen, neutralize CO2, decrease ozone and lower temperatures. Canopy planted 352 local trees this year, cared for some 2000 trees and advocated for our urban forest as a whole.

Education & OutreachPublic education on the value of urban trees lies at the core of Canopy’s programs and partnerships. This year Canopy worked with over 1,200 residents on forty-six separate educational tree-related activities, enriching our communities’ ability to care for and grow our urban forests.Tree Trainings and WorkshopsFree tree workshops provide residents with the opportunity to gain a hands-on understanding of their urban environments. Canopy offered six workshops this year, attended by some fifty residents, addressing topics such as young and mature tree care, pruning and the value of community trees. Five of the workshops were part of Canopy’s Community Tree Steward series led by professional ISA-certified arborists.Tree WalksCanopy’s monthly ISA-certified arborist-led tree walks give residents the opportunity to talk with tree experts while learn-ing about urban trees in their neighborhoods. This year over 150 people enjoyed this free community experience. The walks, publicized in local newspapers, radio PSAs and email updates, are free and open to the public and are attended by all ages. In addition, fifteen self-guided Palo Alto Tree Walk pamphlets are available online at canopy.org/walks.html.Urban Forestry PresentationsCanopy is regularly asked to give presentations to local schools, community groups and city governments. Our talks are tai-lored to each audience, providing historical insight as well as the latest science-based information on the urban forest. This year’s highlights included an award acceptance speech at the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce Tall Tree Award ceremony, a talk to the Palo Alto Garden Club and a Tu B’Shvat holiday presentation at the Congregation Beth Am. We also provided educational displays and information at the Tour Des Trees cycling event, the Girl Scout’s House, and the Patagonia Store in Palo Alto.

Evergreen trees planted in rows — like the ones Canopy planted along East and West Bayshore Roads can capture up to 85% of the air pollution particles blowing through their branches.

Email and Web Outreach: Canopy.org and TreE-NEWSCanopy’s website received over 336,000 visits this year. The site includes a comprehensive tree selection database, urban forest data, tree care advice, an arborist referral list, and a calendar of our current events, as well as downloadable, self-guided tree walks. Canopy launched a new bi-monthly email, TreE-NEWS, which is sent to over 1,500 supporters. The updates include tree-related news, event listings and volunteer opportunities and were well received. Canopy NewslettersOver 1,000 people received each of Canopy’s three separate news letters this year, featuring articles about tree care, urban forestry and Canopy’s programs. Media CoverageLocal media clearly values Canopy’s expertise on all things tree-related. In addition to our twenty-two regular event listings in local newspapers, there were twenty-six stories on Canopy’s work.Public Recognition and AwardsIn addition to winning a Home Depot Foundation 2007 NeighborWoods Award, Canopy was honored to receive the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce’s prestigious Tall Tree Award as the Outstanding Palo Alto Nonprofit organization for 2008. Canopy was among the four recipients of the award and was lauded for having “contributed significantly to the betterment of the community, often quietly, steadily and unheralded.” Tall Tree Award recipients are acknowledged at a high-profile awards ceremony and through local news coverage.

The environmental and social benefits of a healthy urban forest do not stop at city limits. Cleaner air, better storm water runoff management and improved urban landscape have a positive effect on the area as a whole.

Marty Deggeller demonstrates the fun in tree planting.

AdvocacyCanopy keeps City and County elected representatives informed of practices and protocols that build or threaten the health of the urban forest. Canopy has worked closely with the City of Palo Alto staff on the outline of an innovative Urban Forest Master Plan. Canopy was also instrumental in the City’s submitting and obtaining two substantial urban forestry grants from Cal Fire. These grants will provide funds to conduct a new comprehensive street tree inventory and to complete the Master Plan. The plan will provide a framework for managing the growth of the community forest and will clarify goals, poli-cies and ordinances on both private and public trees. Canopy also advocates at State and Federal levels for increased funding for urban forestry programs.

Palo Alto street and park trees can intercept 135 million gallons of rainwater. Less runoff reduces flooding, decreases water pollution going into the Bay and prevents further damage to the banks of the San Francisquito Creek.

Community ServicesThe Right Tree in the Right PlaceUrban trees sometimes grow to interfere with utility lines. Canopy’s Right Tree in the Right Place (RTRP) program coor-dinates the removal and replacement of these problem trees. Working with the City of Palo Alto’s Utility Department, Canopy mediated twenty separate cases this year, working with residents and City staff to facilitate the removal and replacement of unsuitable trees with species that need less pruning and maintenance.Arborists for Our School GroundsLocal schools frequently seek advice from Canopy about trees on their grounds. Canopy connects them with the experts and resources they seek. During construction of new playing fields at Gunn High School Canopy brought arborists and the school’s administration together to preserve several large oaks endangered by construction plans. Canopy also worked with Eastside College Preparatory High School in East Palo Alto, planting trees in many areas of their campus. Working with the organization Collective Roots, Canopy planted numerous fruit trees at the East Palo Alto Charter School community gardens.Community Arborist ListCanopy offers in-depth web site information on finding and hiring local ISA-certified arborists. The web site’s arborist section lists close to forty local companies and individuals who can help residents resolve a variety of tree issues.“Tree Tips” Phone LineThis year we responded to over 800 phone inquiries on a vari-ety of tree-related questions. Every day, Canopy staff members answer numerous phone calls and emails, often taking a great deal of time to provide practical answers and to educate callers on local trees and regulations. Inquiries range from species-specific questions to neighbor tree disputes. Fiscal Sponsorship and MentoringCanopy extends its expertise through partnerships with nascent urban forestry organizations in surrounding communi-ties. Newly formed Mountain View Trees was able to establish its programs and initiate its own fundraising activities under Canopy’s fiscal sponsorship, successfully getting its first grant from California Releaf. Canopy also acted as a mentor for the East Palo Alto Tree Taskforce, helping establish the new group and assisting it to obtain its initial funding.

Even

ts Annual Mayor’s Tree Planting and Canopy Awards PartyCanopy honored several Bay Area residents for outstanding tree care efforts at the organization’s 12th Annual Mayor’s Tree Planting Ceremony and party. The Mayor’s Tree Planting Cer-emony honored outgoing Palo Alto Mayor Yoriko Kishimoto who planted an Allee elm tree at the gathering. This year, Can-opy’s Out on a Limb Award for outstanding volunteers went to Hans Weber who dedicated countless hands-on volunteer hours to Canopy’s tree work, Allen Chen who built a tool shed to house all of Canopy’s tools, and Jack Wilson who delivered piles of mulch to the East Palo Alto Tree Initiative plantings. Canopy’s annual Soforenko Awards go to individuals who make significant contributions to our local urban forest. This year’s recipients were Ron Bracewell (in memoriam) who produced a scholarly survey in “Trees of Stanford and Environs”, Joe Val-laire who worked to restore Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course trees and arranged storage for some six hundred East Palo Alto trees, Chuck McDonnell who played a pivotal role advocating for mature native oaks on Palo Alto school campuses, and Virginia Warheit for her tireless role as senior planner on the El Camino Real Master Schematic Design Plan.

An Evening with Remarkable TreesRenowned Anglo-Irish author and photographer Thomas Pakenham brought his global perspective to Canopy’s June 22nd

“Evening with Remarkable Trees” fundraising dinner. Pakenham has explored five continents for over a decade in search of extra-ordinary trees. His internationally acclaimed books Meetings with Remarkable Trees, Remarkable Trees of the World and In Search of Remarkable Trees On Safari In Southern Africa have made headlines around the world. Some 200 guests attended Canopy’s open air dinner talk at Mitchell Park, enjoying Paken-ham’s tales of global adventures in search of trees as well as slides of his tree photography. Among the honored guests at the dinner were State Senator Joe Simitian, who was emcee, Consul General of Ireland Emer Dean, State Assemblyman Ira Ruskin and Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss. Event proceeds will benefit Canopy’s urban forestry programs in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto.

10 Canopy Annual Report, November 2008

Fiscal Year 2008 Financial Summary*Canopy had another strong financial year. Revenues for the year reached $318,994. Individual gifts (excluding our fundraiser event) grew more than 30%. Expenses were $296,518. The resulting surplus of more than $22,000 was added to organiza-tional reserves. The balance sheet remained very robust. This year again we called on our dedicated volunteers. They responded enthusiasti-cally and made plantings and other programs possible. Many hours were devoted to tree care, which is very labor intensive. While not accounted for in the financial statements, the total value of their contribution can be estimated at close to $140,000.*Canopy’s fiscal year matches that of the City of Palo Alto, July 1 to June 30.
