Cars in our Curriculuman AwesomeEducationalExperience
As a Model T group weoften discuss how toget the youngergeneration interestedin our passion It is a
difficult task but oneworth the investment
As a teacher I wantedto involve my studentssomehow in learningabout the history of theautomobile Afterbrainstorming with ourscience teacher aschool wide (pre-
kindergarten through5th grade)
unit was created
Over a 2-3 weekperiod the studentslearned about HenryFord the assembly lineand the changes in theautomobile over timeTo be honest I wasamazed at the interestthat the studentsshowed Activitiesincluded graphicorganizers an inventyour own car drawing
IT MAY GO HOME
Karen gets ready for the arrival of the first students Note Benand Ann Wasmanrsquos debut of their ldquonewrdquo 1914 depot hack
and writing activitysequencing of carsvideos of assemblylines books andresearch on HenryFord family interviewsa PowerPointpresentation thechildren loved them all
All the students(1100) participated inan assembly lineactivity Depending onthe grade level somemade cars withconstruction papersome with foodproducts
Either way it was agreat way to show theimportance of themoving assembly lineSome teachers evenincorporated qualitycontrol
After learning aboutthe evolution of theautomobile MinneolaElementary CharterSchool was host to acar exhibit for thestudents With thehelp of local car clubswe were able to havecars from 1914 up tothe 1960s They wereparked in chronologicalorder so the studentscould see the
progression andchanges over theyears To enable 1100students to view thecars was a majorundertaking but itworked The studentslistened intently andasked greatquestions Thedrivers wereenthusiastic andeager to share theirknowledge it waseducational for allinvolved
We had a bit of asurprise for thestudents as well Oneof our club membersleft his Model T athome and brought hisTesla This was a realeye opener for thestudents as theylooked under thehood It was theicing on the cakefor a unit about howautomobiles havechanged over theyears A car with noengine how can thatbe What a greatway to showyoungsters thatanything is possible ifyou are willing towork at it
I appreciate all of thehelp from the TinLizzies of NorthCentral Florida theAACA groups from theVillages and fromOcala and the localgentlemen whobrought their cars overfor the day
I strongly encouragethose of you who arereading this to gettogether with a schoolshare your passion andknowledge and get ouryouth interested carsIt was truly amazing tome to hear our pre-Kindergarten studentshaving a discussionabout what theylearned after seeingthe cars Now thetrick is to keep thatinterest Each year Ihope to do an activitylike this expanding onthe studentsknowledge andinterest CentralFlorida car clubs beready I will becontacting you againsoon

2016 Fall Tour Etowah Tennessee
The SmokeyMountains ofsoutheasternTennessee was ourtouring location thisyear Headquarteredin the town ofEtowah The townwas purposely laidout and built as amaintenance centerfor railroadequipment It alsohappens to be in theheart of theCherokee IndianNation of the early1800s
As in the past toursthe history of thearea is rich and achallenge to absorbjust as roads are achallenge to navigateand drive Thoughthe railroadscollapsed Etowah
has found a way tosurvive and remainimportant in thearea
We opened the weekwith a wonderfuldrive through theCherokee NationalForest running formiles along theOcoee River Weclimbed steeply tothe top of amountain andenjoyed numerousviewing Rest Stopswhere we apparentlycould see NorthCarolina SouthCarolina GeorgiaAlabama andTennessee Theweather was REALLYthat good all week
With rare exceptionsthe roads were either
gravel Macadam orBlacktop andtypically only aboutone lane wideTraffic wasextremely light andpolite
The local driversusually stopped andpulled to the sideallowing us to driveon by Of course wedidnt see much lanestriping or guardrails so passing onmountain roads wasalways an anxiousexperience
Im convinced thoughits the people thatmakes these tours sospecial We talk atbreakfast lunch anddinnerand then thecampfire each nightenjoying the moment
Mondays drive alongthe Hiawassee Riverled us through smalltowns and manyhistoric attractions
Most somber was thestop at the CharlestonHeritage Center withtheir exhibit detailingthe Trail of Tearswhen the CherokeeIndians were roundedup and moved out oftheir lands Where
next They weremoved to Oklahomaand we to a couple ofVineyards and Winerytours Ironiccouldnt help butthink about theclassic indian alcoholissue and yet grapesgrow so well in theirlands On wemoved to the OcoeeDam Number 1 onthe Tennessee ValleyAuthoritys list ofmany dams built forflood control andhydro electric powerin the regionFinally we stopped ata wonderfulMennonitecommunity andvisited their marketoffering fantastichomemade foods andcrafts
Tuesday saw usclimbing to over 4500feet as we followed
the Hiawassee riverinto the mountainsThere were manyopportunities to stopalong the way Weturned off the blacktopand followed smallerroads seeing manywaterfalls and climbedto the CherohalaSkyway The skywayoffered great views asthe weather continuedto cooperate The Tsgot a workout todayand we added anotherlayer of dust Aftersome campfire timeGeorge (and Dean)gave us a report ontheir western tour thissummer Is proved aT will go almostanywhere
On Wednesday wetoured two farmingcounties withwonderful narrowroads some flat landand dairy farms We
enjoyed grilledCheese sandwiches ata large farm thatactually produced ourlunch right there Atthe next farm stopwe enjoyed locallyproduced Ice CreamThough Etowah is avery small town weate dinner at differentlocal spot each nightand found them all tobe wonderful
Thursdays routeconsisted of morecountry roads butwithout a good lunchstopso we employedthe manifold cookersRamona Akin andhelpers filled all thecookers with chili andwe cooked allmorning as weclimbed and climbedand climbedClimbing warms upthe enginesand theChili We could smell
it by 1030 am andsome people had toadd water to preventit for burning Atsome point we droveShuler Creek Roadwhich I believe wasonce a narrow gaugerailroad because thegrades and turns wereso consistent Eventhough it was gravelwe could chug alongin high gear and enjoythe views
Later we stopped atthe Hiawassee Damand enjoyed theirpicnic tables along theriver for our Chililunch After returningto Etowah wereluctantly beganthinking of our closing
dinner last camp fireand trailering ourcars
It was a wonderfulweek full ofchallenges goodfriends and historyI was particularlypleased that DeanYoder joined us thisyear He was on hisway back to Iowafrom a tour in Maineall in his T Heremains an inspirationfor us I only recall afew mechanicalproblems one carsuffered a rod failuretwo cars broke rearaxles
