NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi MumbaiMunicipal Corporation (NMMC) onFriday 13th December called up thegeneral body meeting to discussabout the much awaited developmentplan of the city. For the first time inthe general body meet, scribes andthe common citizens of the satellitecity were not al-lowed to attend thep r o c e e d i n g s .Guards were placedat the gate to checkthat the scribes donot enter the pro-ceedings.

The draft city de-velopment plan wassubmitted by thecivic administration to the NMMCmayor Jaywant Sutar six monthsback for tabling in the general bodymeeting and it was also taken for dis-cussion in the special general bodymeeting called up by Sutar on30th August, 2019. The discussiondidn’t go well and all the corporatorsraised the question on the DP planand asked for changes in the plan. The general body meeting was ad-journed on 30th August without anydecision. And it was pushed furtherand meanwhile the model code of con-duct was imposed in September, 2019for the Vidhan Sabha elections.

The civic body does not have itsown development plan from last 20years and they adopted the same de-velopment plan which was drafted by

NM DP plan discussed secretly in GB meeting

Scribes & citizens refrained from attending the proceedings

the City and Industrial DevelopmentCorporation (CIDCO) in the year1980 for Navi Mumbai, Panvel andUran taluka’s 95 villages that wereincluded in its jurisdiction. Now thecivic body’s draft plan which was pre-sented in the general body meetingon Friday 13th November, 2019 willbe for the period of next twenty years

and it will take intoconsideration thepopulation growthalong with services, amenities and landthey will require.

According to theMaharashtra Re-gional and TownPlanning Act 1966,it is essential for ev-

ery municipal corporation to preparea development plan of its city in thefirst 20 years. But the NMMC evenafter becoming the planning author-ity for Navi Mumbai in the year 1994by the state government declarationwere using the development plan ofCIDCO.

During the secret general bodymeeting, corporators discussed theplan in great detail and the meetingcontinued even after 10pm on Friday. All the corporators were shown thecopy of the development plan. All thecorporators during the discussiondemanded the facilities in their par-ticular wards according to the DPplan. They also said that the CIDCOplot should be trans-ferred to the NMMC Contd. on pg. 4

Issue : 190 15 December, 2019

All sports need equal encouragementThe recent decision of former Mayor Sagar Naik to introduce

Navi Mumbai IPL to encourage young cricket talent from the city,is praiseworthy. Undoubtedly

Cricket has become the craze in the country and more and moreyoungsters desire to take up this sport. However, along with crick-et, there is also a need to encourage other sports as well.

It is unfortunate that while all of us are familiar with the namesof almost all the cricket players, most of us struggle with our mem-ory when asked to name players of other sports. Not many re-member that in Shooting, Gagan Narang won four Gold medals inCommon Wealth Games2010 or Indian World Champion wrestlerSushil Kumar has won the gold medal in FILA 2010 World Wres-tling Championships or Leander Paes has won Olympic bronzemedals in Tennis.

Along with cricket, there is a need to encourage players of oth-er sports too. Athletes from US perform well as they are givenwide coverage by media and broadcasting units irrespective of howmany viewers are present to watch them perform. The profit andmoney should not always be the criteria. Giving media exposureto the budding athletes boosts their morale and performance. Ad-ditionally, the Government should keep an eye on the biggestmedal prospects and provide good coaching to them. Private broad-casting companies should take help from sports authorities to covercertain sports which are unfamiliar in the country. It is equally im-portant to give financial assistance like introducing pension poli-cies and offering government jobs to all the talented sportspersonof all the games. Rarely do we hear of a cricketer living in poverty-thanks to the policies tabled by BCCI for cricketers due to whichthey do not have to deal with shortage of debts in their playingperiod or post retirement. Unfortunately, that is not the fate ofmost of the players of other sports who fail to get even thesponsors. They only live normal life when they are in the playingperiod and struggle post their retirement.

Leagues should be introduced for different sports to help innurturing more champion players. A sports like Kabaddi, forinstance, which was just familiar in rural India is now a vital part ofIndian sports- thanks to Pro Kabaddi which was sponsored &broadcasted by Star Sports in the earlier part. Hockey was also adepleting sport in India but Hockey India League gave it a newlifeline. Likewise, with the introduction of ISL, football too is see-ing positive improvement and India is now ranked under 100 after2 decades in football.

In a fast-growing economy like India, there is a tremendouspotential for the sports sector to develop and achieve the status ofan industry. India, now hosts the Indian Premier League (cricket),Hockey India League, Indian Super League (football), Pro Kabba-di League and Indian Badminton League, all of which have aidedin the growth of the sports sector. If sport is recognised as anindustry, it can generate a large number of employment opportu-nities in the form of the apparel and equipment sector, sports med-icine, sports tourism and other sport-related sectors. The Indiangovernment must also invest in technological advances such assports analytics to assist in coaching professional athletes. It mustalso provide wearables, sensors, and nutrition as per the require-ment of the sport and the sportsperson.

India being the second most populated country in the world, has the ability to churn out athletes who can put us on the globalmap in terms of sports, other than cricket. Players from differentsports are already making the country proud with their splendidperformances. By providing them with good facilities, monetaryassistance, world class infrastructure, India will have a huge med-al tally in all the sports. What Indian sports need is the support ofthe Government and its People.

By Dr. Monica Khanna

The stories that wehear in our childhoodare more powerful thanwhat we realize. Theyare instrumental inproviding role models, juxtaposing ‘good’ and‘bad’ behaviour, help-ing us to differentiatebetween right andwrong. Good or correctbehaviour is rewardedand bad or wrong be-haviour is punished.Just as we mix medi-cine in a sugar potionto disguise and replacethe bitterness, so alsodo we teach moralitythrough the supposed-ly innocent stories thatwe feed our children.Only, the stories arenot as innocent as theyseem to be. For un-knowingly, we condi-tion their impression-able minds and sowseeds of a thought pro-cess which stays em-bedded in their subcon-scious, influencing theway they think andlead their lives.

Yet, in moments ofreflection, these storiesresurface, and forceyou to question ideasthat you have accept-ed unconditionally. Forinstance, media hasbeen flooded with re-sponses to the rape cas-es that have takenplace in the recentpast. The widespreadprotests against theheinous crimes weremarred by the few butconspicuous commentsof those who held wom-en responsible for whathappened to them,

Tell Talesstating in no uncertainterms that women ‘in-vite’ rape through theirown actions. I could nothelp but correlate thisresponse, which to mewas almost as appall-ing as the crime itself,to the tale of Little RedRiding Hood that wasone of my favourite sto-ries as a little girl.

Little Red RidingHood wishes to visither grandmother whois unwell. Her mothergives her a basket offood, warning her notto stop anywhere ortalk to strangers. Al-though little RedRiding Hood seems tobe a sweet and obedi-

ent child, she gets dis-tracted by the beauti-ful sights in the forest, and also engages in con-versation with a ‘big, bad wolf.’ In all inno-cence, she discloses herdestination to the wolf, who gobbles up hergrandmother, and at-tacks her too. LittleRed Riding Hood man-ages to escape from theclutches of the wolfwith the help of a wood-cutter who hears hercry for help.

To begin with, thestory points to the dan-gers of a girl going outalone without an es-cort, and suggests thatthere are wolves lurk-ing about in search ofprey. Girls therefore

need to be cautious, lis-ten to the instructionsgiven to them, andavoid talking to strang-ers who may try to be-friend them. If theydisobey, they should beprepared for the conse-quences that will inev-itably follow. What isinteresting is thatthere are no instruc-tions for wolves – forwild animals cannot betamed or controlled. They will satiate theirhunger, and do as theyplease.

When little girlsare brought up to be-lieve that they are notsecure outside theboundaries laid out for

them, when little boysidentify themselveswith wolves that haveunrestricted freedomto satisfy their desires, when ‘masculinity’ isassociated with being aconqueror and ‘femi-ninity’ is associatedwith passivity, whenthe rules are differentfor boys and girls, whatare we teaching ourchildren about genderroles and equality ofthe sexes? Is it abouttime we rethink thetales we are telling ourchildren?

SANPADA: Shree Sub-ramania Seva Samajconducted 17th AyappaPooja in a grand way attheir Balalayam templepremises in Sanpada onSaturday. Namasa-keertnam by Thonduku-lam Ramu Bhaga-vadhar party kept thedevotees spell bound.

Ayyappa pooja as-sumes greater impor-tance during the Man-dala period and Ayap-pa Bhakthas conductMaharavillakku inthe most religious way.The devotees observefast during this periodand follow lots of cus-toms before taking upthe route to Sabarima-la. The annual pilgrimseason to Sabarimalabegins with the Man-dalakala season, which commencesusually in the monthsof November-Decem-ber followed by theMakaravilakku seasonduring December-Jan-uary.

The temple at Sa-barimala can be ac-cessed via many tradi-tional routes. Pambais the main haltingpoint on the way to Sa-barimala. As per tra-dition a dip in the sa-cred river Pambacleanses the pilgrimsoff sins and after thatthey proceed to thesannidhanam or thesanctorium of LordAyyappa. A truly rivet-ing spiritual experi-ence in the lap of pris-tine nature, Sabarima-la has become a majordestination of thefaithful in India.

Mandala Puja is animportant ritual ob-served at the Sabari-mala Ayyappa Templein Kerala. It is ob-served from the 1stday of the ‘Vrish-chikam’ month till the11th or 12th day of the‘Dhanu’ masam in thetraditional Malayalamcalendar. The day ofMandala Puja marksthe end of the 41 dayslong austerity that isobserved by the follow-ers or devotees of LordAyyappa. The fast be-gins 41 before the ob-servance of MandalaPuja, that is, the firstday of the Malayalammonth of ‘Vrish-chikam’. MandalaPuja along with‘Makar Vilakku’ arethe two major eventsheld at the Sabarima-laAyyappa Templethat draws devoteesfrom all over Keralaand neighbouringstates. During thistime the temple re-mains open on most ofthe days for the devo-tees. As a tradition, devotees visiting theSabarimala AyyappaTemple during theMandala Puja alsovisit the ‘GuruvayurTemple’. During thistime special ‘Abh-ishekam’ ceremony isorganized in the ‘Gu-ruvayur Temple’.

Pathinettapadi (18divine steps) to thesanctum sanctorum isdivine in all aspects.Every Ayyappa devo-tee, before he sees theSanctum Sanatorium, has to lay his footstepsover eighteen sacred

steps. Initially the 18steps were made ofgranite. It was latercovered with Pancha-loha (a special compo-sition of gold, silver, copper, iron and tin),in the year 1985 to pre-vent it from deteriora-tion. Pilgrims initiatetheir ascent up thePathinettam Padi byplacing their right footon the first step. Asper the tradition, onlythose who undertakethe penance for 41 daysand those who carrythe irumudi on theirheads are allowed touse the steps

Apart from devo-tion, one has to havetremendous will pow-er, determination andself-control over thepleasantries, comforts

INSPIRE : Impact of Bhagvat Gita on life and work of Shri Eknath Ranande

By Dr Vandana Mahajani

This year the GitaJayanti was on 8 De-cember. At Vive-kananda kendra wecelebrate Gita Jayan-ti to focus on the ba-sic principles withwhich we shouldwork and also how asan instrument weshould develop.

Nivedita Bhide,Vice President, Vive-kananda KendraKanyakumari givessome of the pointersof how Eknathji fol-lowed Bhagavadgitain the saga of Vive-kananda Rock Me-morial

YudhyaswaVigatjwara–

In life, there willalways be obstacles, difficulties, opposi-tions from variouspersons. This may bebecause of their notunderstanding us orthe nature of ourwork or because theyare impelled by theafflictions of the

mind. Whatever maybe the reasons, weshould not get an-noyed, angry, jealous ofthem. Sri Krishnasays ‘YudhyaswaVi-gatjwara –’ fight with-out getting affected bythe opponent’s afflic-tions. Only then, thereis a possibility that wecan bring them to ourpath.

When a section ofChristian community,Sri Bhaktavatsalam,Sri HumayunKabir op-posed, Eknathji did nothave any ill-feelingabout them in hismind. Actually in oneof his letters whilementioning the situa-tion of the Christianfisherman community,he writes, “ I could getthe chance to tournearby areas of Kany-akumari and to studythe life of illiterate andinnocent fishermenand other downtroddensections of the peoplethere. Though theymust have got convert-ed into Christianitylong back, the Hinduethos and Samskarsare still in them inabundance. 323 MPssigned the request forconstruction of memo-rial. Thus, graduallyboth became very closefriends. These are theexamples of Yudhyas-waVigatJwara.

Parasparam Bhavay-antashreyaparamava-

psyath –When we work in

the society, we have toacknowledge the Shak-ti Kendras of the soci-ety and associate withthem, thus mutuallyhelping each other at-tain the noblest in life.As soon as Eknathji gotthe responsibility ofVivekananda Rock Me-morial, he wentstraight to Ramakrish-na Mission, BelurMath.

Similarly, Eknathjimet Shankaracharya

Sri Chandrashekharen-draSaraswati of Kan-chiKamakotiPeethamknown as Parama-charya and got his ac-tive support and bless-ings. Sri Bhaktavat-salam was ardent dev-otee of Paramacharya. When the state com-mittees were beingformed again Eknathjisaw to it that highly

respected persons gotassociated with it.Karmanyevaadhikaraste

ma phaleshukadachEknathji lived this

shloka of BhagavadGita. We all have achoice in action but notin the fruit of action asthere are many factorsworking for or againstit. Not only that, wemight have plannedsomething but Ishwarahas chosen us as instru-ments to do some great-er work. Thus the fruitthat we are expectingwe may not get, but weshould not give up our

efforts, our actions. Those actions also weshould properly chooseand do it.

Eknathji neverslacked in his efforts. His choice in action i.e.what to do, how to do,when to do was alwaysclear. As a Karyakarta,we always have to do somany things, but inthat also we have to ex-

ercise our choice. Whatis important should bedone immediately. Theroutine work keeps usbusy. But certainworks which should bedone at specific timeshould be done then. That choice of ‘when todo what’ needs to be ex-ercised by all the Kary-akartas. For examplewe have taken ‘Vive-kananda ShilaSmarak:Ek Bharat Vijayi Bhar-at’ as the Samparkwork to be done in the50th year of Vivekanan-da Rock Memorial. What needs to be donenow, if we just take itlightly, we will miss thebus. Exercising choicein action is very impor-tant.Nimittamaatram BhavSav-

yasachinEach one of us is

chosen by Ishwara to doHis work. Only some-one needed to be a ni-mittam, an instrumentto actualize it withone’s efforts. That iswhat Eknathji did. Theprovidence prepares theground, chooses theperson to act. If at thattime we escape it ordoes not take it serious-ly then we cease to bean instrument for thatwork. Therefore, weshould not lack in ourresponse to fulfil ourDayitva that opens upthe road for further

work and our innerdevelopment. Onlywhat is needed is -complete humilityand throwing our-selves 100 % on thejob,as was done byEknathji.

Tasmattvamuttishtha-yasholabhaswa-Sri Krishna says

do not be faint heart-ed, get up and achievesuccess in greatworks, noble works. Atoo much calculativeperson cannot succeedin life. Life is not atrade. It is an oppor-tunity to grow, to con-tribute, to take aheadthe process of humanevolution. That is pos-sible only if we areworking with integri-ty and seizing the op-portunities. Eknathjiused to say ‘Opportu-nities are duties.’

On the eve of GitaJayanti let us ponderon these lessons ofGita so that we areable to make use ofthis opportunity of the50 th year of Vive-kananda Rock Memo-rial to take the workVivekananda Kendrato the greater heightsin interest of our na-tion and our culture.

Many of the plants in Amazon’s botanical-gar-den office complex are found in mountainous re-gions of tropical countries where temperatures arecooler than ground level. Amazon says the soundof water running through the building and thesmell of blossoming flowers will inspire “creativi-ty” and perhaps even improve brain function cit-ing studies linking increased productivity to morenatural environments. The building also has moretypical office features such as closed conferencerooms and meeting spaces.

Amazon GoOutside its corporate headquarters in Seattle,

Amazon opened its first amazon go the US. ama-zon go gives you the option to buy your goods from

Amazon in person rather than throughAmazon.com. It is a cashless, cashierless, card-less, checkless convenience store. That means, when you shop at amazon go, you will never haveto wait in line. The store works with an amazongo application - you simply enter amazon go, takethe products you want and, thanks to the app, just walk out. This technology can detect whenproducts are taken or returned to the shelves andkeeps track of them in your virtual cart. Casual Dress!I used to watch the office goers in corporate

America and particularly at Amazon. I was sur-prised by their simplicity in dressing. Nobodycomes wearing tie! Even senior officials come towork casually dressed sometimes in jeans and T-shirt. Performance and not dress is important hereand many companies in America.

Pet -friendly EnvironmentWatching the morning rush of the employees

from an opposite restaurant I was amused by thesight of dogs taken along with them to work dai-ly. There are about 7,000 registered dogs that atAmazon campus in Seattle. It has always been apet-friendly environment. The company says thatallowing pets in the office creates an overall bet-

ter place to work, Employees feel more inspired, more creative, and more comfortable. Executivestake pride in seeing their employees happy andthriving.

AMAZING FACTS!• Amazon began in the garage of founder Jeff

Bezos’ home in Bellevue near Seattle in the stateof Washington.

• When the website first went live it only soldbooks. The first book ever sold on Amazon was“Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies,” byDouglas Hofstadter.

• During its initial stage when Amazon used tosell books, a bell in the office used to informthe other employees.

• Amazon holds a patent on 1-Click buying, andlicenses it to Apple.

• Amazon’s fastest order delivered to date was afour-pack of Starbucks Vanilla Frappuccino toa customer in Miami. The delivery was madein under 10 minutes.

• Another Amazon’s fastest delivery took 23 min-utes. It was an Easy-Bake Oven to a customerin Manhattan, New York City.

• Amazon owns 41 subsidiaries and brands.• Amazon’s logo shows a smile from A to Z in the

name to signify that the company is willing todeliver everything from A to Z to everyone, anywhere in the world.

• Amazon sponsors a streetcar (Tram) stop thatruns through the campus.

• Amazon.com employees including the CEOspend two days every two years working at thecustomer service desk. This practice is to helpall workers understand the customer serviceprocess.

• If all the cardboard used in all 1.6 million dai-ly Amazon packages (including padded enve-lopes) sent out is laid out flat, it would coveran area equivalent to 26,400 square miles—roughly the same size as the State of West Vir-ginia or the country of Sri Lanka. One back-of-the-cardboard calculation reveals that thecompany could cover the entire United Statesin cardboard in about five months of sales!

• PowerPoint presentations are banned at Ama-zon meetings. Employees are instead expectedto write out their points as prose in multi-pagenarratives on white boards. This, Bezos be-lieves, encourages critical thinking.

“The Konkan Divi-sional Commissionerwas aghast when hewas shown photograph-ic evidence of burial ofwetlands and killing ofmangroves in NMSEZand JNPT sites,” saidNandakumar Pawarwho attended the ses-sion representing NGOVanashakti.

Taking up com-plaints from a crosssection, the committee

noted the serious envi-ronment law violationsat NMSEZ sites atBhendkhal and Pagote, apart from Belpada,Panje, Chembur andalong the Sion-Panvelhighway at Vashi.

“I hope some seri-ous corrective actionswill follow as the Man-grove committee headappeared to be verykeen on restoring themangroves and wet-lands to the extent pos-sible,” said Pawar.

Welcoming the “pos-itive developments,”activist B N Kumar,director of NGO Nat-Connect Foundation

said for long there hasbeen a neglect of theecological destruction.

Both Kumar andPawar have recentlydrawn the attention ofChief Minister UddhavThackeray as well asthe Mangrove commit-tee to the all-round eco-logical destruction andcalled for immediatecorrective measures.

While the debrisdumping on wetlandshas been stopped at theinstance of the Commit-tee, the environmental-ists have pointed out

that “enough and moredamage has alreadybeen done” at Bhend-khal, Belpada, Jasaiand so on. Restorationof these sites will be aherculean task consid-ering the tonnes of ma-terial dumped, saidPawar.

At Vashi, Kumarpointed out, the high-way construction debrishad been dumped on themangroves and levelledsubsequently using JCBmachines apparently tofacilitate the road ex-pansion by PWD. ThePWD officials were al-ready summoned by theMangrove Committee to

explain their position onthe destruction of envi-ronment.

In another case ofgross neglect of viola-tion, the highway ex-pansion site near Pun-jab Warehouse CFSlooks like a “massivemangrove graveyard”as close to 5,000 vital, fully grown sea plantshave been choked due tothe blocking of flow oftidal water. NeitherNHAI nor its contrac-tor are yet to take themangrove restorationseriously despite the

mangrove committeeorders to do so and al-low tidal water flow, thegreen groups said intheir complaint.

Similarly at Ched-danagar, Chembur, hundreds of mangroveshave been hacked ap-parently by the landmafia, Pawar said.

Meanwhile, a teamcomprising of Revenue, forest, police, CIDCOvisited two sites-Bhendkhal wetlandand Uran Bori Pakha-di dumping site- on 13th

December where gar-bage is being dumpedon Mangroves and tookstock of the situation.

The system is also initiatedwith the introduction of advancedtechnology in order to provide plat-form screen doors (PSD) which willbe similar to one used in Metrotrain.”

A K Jain, Central Railway Pub-lic Relationship Officer informed, “Itis indeed a good news for the rail-way passengers. Through CBTC sys-
