T y p Our Guides: Pem Dorjee Sherpa grew up in a village high in the Himalayas in the Everest region of Nepal. He is a member of the ethnic group called Sherpa, the indigenous people of that area. Pem has been working as a porter and guide since 1995. He has been organizing and leading tours, treks and expeditions in the Himalayas twice a year. He climbed Mt. Everest the first time as a climbing Sherpa in 2004. Then in 2005 he organized an expedition for the 100th anniversary of the Rotary International. His team took a Rotary flag to the summit in celebration. On that climb, he and his climbing partner, now wife, Moni Mulepati, held their wedding at 29,035 feet on the summit of Mt. Everest. They made world news with their marriage and hold the record for the world’s highest wedding! Pem also hiked 3,100 miles along the Continental Divide Trail from the Mexican border to the Canadian border during a fundraising campaign to build a continuous trail. Heather O’Neal, a veteran traveler and former Peace Corps Volunteer, lived in Kathmandu during her Junior Year Abroad at the University of Wisconsin. While living with a Nepalese family she learned to speak the language and was so captivated by the Nepalese culture, the people, the mountains, world religions and ancient traditions, she received a degree in South Asian Studies. Having written a book, “Writes of Passage through Nepal”, Heather is passionate about sharing her experience and expertise. She started Of Global Interest Adventure Travel in 2000 and has been leading tours to Nepal twice a year since. Pem and Heather opened the Himalayan Bazaar on Main Street in Ann Arbor in 2011.
