The Gospel of this Sunday calls us to do two things, first: not to be afraid, “Do not be afraid, little flock…” and the second: to be prepared for the coming of the Lord., “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding…” it is easy for us to be afraid of things, most especially when thinking about eternity, however, this must not be with us, since living in the fullness of gospel, we have to rely not in our works but in God’s mercy. Therefore being courageous in the faith in our good works will lead us to be pre-pare for the coming of Christ. We must put our trust in Him at all times and know that he will serve us because we have been faithful to him. While teaching about belief in the second coming of Christ and the Last Judgment, Pope Francis also spoke about what it means to live in “the intermediary time,” the time between the death and resurrection of Christ and his coming again. It is a “time of vigilance when we must keep the lamp of faith, hope and charity burning, a time when we must keep our hearts open to goodness, beauty and truth. It’s a time to live according to God, because we do not know the day or the hour of Christ’s return,” he taught. Christians continually must look for signs of God’s presence, Pope Francis said, before adding: “Do not fall asleep. The life of a sleeping Christian is a sad life.” Let us ponder these thoughts during this coming week. Mission in Guyana: prayer is much needed as I will be preaching an outreach mission in Guyana, South America. The team is comprise by four college seminarians, four sisters and three lay missionaries. The parish where I will be preaching is named Santa Rosa, Amerindian community in the interior of the northwest district. The place is very poor and the only mean of transportation is by boat and canoes. I commend myself your prayers. Blessings Fr. Mariano Minor Seminarians: The seminarians are back in the parish just for a day. On Sunday August 13th they will be leaving for the annual camping trip in upstate New York. I will join them in NY when I get back from Guyana. We will all get back on Sat. August 27th to start the school year on Monday August 29th. This year the number of semi-narians will be 25 young boys. Please pray for us all. Cross Catholic Outreach: As you know, next weekend a priest from Cross International will be preaching here in our parish and appealing for the poorest of the poor. In my years as priest in Guyana, it was Cross International that helped me to start feeding program centers in different location within my parish; they also built a dormitory for the high school boys who lived in the interior so that they may come to continue with the education in the town. I know this institution is very generous, and I ask you to be generous with them also.
Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

The role of the catechist is a vital ministry to the Church. According to St. Pope John Paul II, catechesis is a “sacred and inalienable right...The Church has always considered catechesis one of her primary tasks...Christ gave the apostles a final command - to make disciples of all na ons and to teach them to observe all that He has commanded… Catechesis always has been and always will be a work for which the whole Church must feel responsible and must wish to be responsible.” (CT 1, 14-15) It is a gi that has tremendous value to the global community at large because through the catechist's word and ac on, the message of Christ con nues to have a place in all human affairs.
The work of catechists depends on the witness of the Church for full effect. As Pope Paul VI said,
“People today listen more to witness than they do to teachers and if they do listen to teachers it is because they are witnesses.” There are many ways to share your gifts
with the parish this year:

Pro Life If we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind our-
selves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is must also give until it hurts.

19º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 7 DE AGOSTO 2016
