To t h e Members of t h e Mycological Soc i e ty of America:

When t h i n k i n g back t o my days as a g radua t e s t u d e n t , t h i s i s t h e l e a s t l i k e l y p o s i t i o n I eve r imagined I would be i n J It i s indeed a r e a l p l e a s u r e t o s e r v e t h e Mycological Soc i e ty t o t h e b e s t of my a b i l i t y i n t h i s h i g h e s t and most coveted p o s i t i o n .

It has been most g r a t i f y i n g t o s e e t h e e n t h u s i a s t i c response among members when asked t o s e r v e i n v a r i o u s c a p a c i t i e s i n t h e Mycological S o c i e t y du r ing t h i s year . There i s r e a l evidence of a tremendous re - v i t a l i z a t i o n du r ing t h e p a s t year . It has been th rough t h e l a b o r i o u s e f f o r t s of D r . lark ~ o g e r s o n , s e r v i n g as Acting E d i t o r of M ~ c o l o g i a , t h e p a s t o f f i c e r s , and t h e coope ra t i ve p a t i e n c e of our members t h a t t h e ~ y c o i o ~ i c a l s o c i e t y has r e a l l y - g o n e forward. It i s a f i n e t r i b u t e t o C l a r k t o have t h e Council and t h e E d i t o r i a l Board unanimously r e q u e s t him t o s e r v e as Ed i to r . We a r e a l s o p l ea sed t h a t he has accep t ed and t h a t t h e New York.Botanica1 Garden has most g r a c i o u s l y a l lowed him t o a c c e p t t h i s r e s p o n s i b i l i t y .

With t h e t h r e e y e a r ' t e r m of o u r c u r r e n t Secre ta ry-Treasure r near- i n g completion, we need t o e l e c t a new member t o t h i s most impor tan t o f f i c e who i s e f f i c i e n t , e n e r g e t i c , and a b l e t o keep t h e a f f a i r s of t h e MSA running smoothly. On beha l f of t h e Soc i e ty , I wish t o express my S i n c e r e a p p r e c i a t i o n t o o u r c u r r e n t Secre ta ry-Treasure r f o r s t e e r i n g t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n through some t r y i n g t imes s o s u c c e s s f u l l y .

R e s u l t s of t h e responses 'on c o n t r i b u t e d pape r s and symposia in- d i c a t e that we have a cons ide rab l e i n c r e a s e i n t h e rmmber of papers t o b e p r e s e n t e d t h i s yea r i n comparison t o las t year .

Among some of our s p e c i a l a t t r a c t i o n s a r e symposia on mic rob ia l ( f u n g a l ) g e n e t i c s w i t h t h e American Phytopathologica1.Society and on medica l mycology.

We a r e p l ann ing a n o t h e r symposium t o d i s c u s s t h e need f o r a b e t t e r s o u r c e book o r manual f o r use as a ready r e f e r e n c e t o aid t h e i n s t r u c t o r i n p r e s e n t i n g b o t h t h e p h y s i o l o g i c a l and morphological a s p e c t s of fung i i n such a way as t o s t i m u l a t e more s t u d e n t i n t e r e s t . With D r . Russe l S t evens as moderator , I hope we w i l l be a b l e t o develop a l i v e l y discus- s i o n on problems of t e ach ing i n v a r i o u s a r e a s of mycology. We hope t o fo rmu la t e a working committee t o proceed on t h e basis of t h e s e suggest - i o n s and t o app ly f o r a g r a n t t o a id i n t h e development of t h i s sou rce book- This i s a n i n v i t a t i o n f o r a l l i n t e r e s t e d t o a t t e n d t h e s e s s i o n .

P u b l i c a t i o n of t h e 1962 volume should beg in i n August.

Vic tor Macomber Cut ter , Jr- , d ied February 26, 1962, at t h e age of 45- After completing h i s doc to ra te at Cornell Universi ty i n 1941, he tought a t Cornel l , t h e Universi ty of Minnesota, and Yale be fo re going t o t h e Womenls College of t h e Universi ty of North Carolina i n 1952 as head of t h e Dept. ( df Biology. H i s mycological i n t e r e s t s were many, and f o r s e v e r a l years before his dea th he had been engaged i n r e sea rch on t h e pure c u l t u r e of r u s t s .

Adelia McCrea d ied at St'. Petersburg, F lo r ida , on January 8, 1962, a t t h e age of 81 years; b u r i a l was i n F l i n t , Michigan. She tought f o r a number of years i n t h e publ ic schools of Michigan and i n 1930 received a Ph-D. degree from t h e Universi ty of Michigan. D r . McCrea w a s a res- ea rch mycologist on t h e staff of Parke, Davis-and Co., D e t r o i t , Michigan, from 1919 u n t i l her re t i rement i n 1942.

Roderick S p r a ~ u e , P lan t Pa thologis t at t h e Washington S t a t e Univ- e r s i t y Tree F r u i t Experiment S t a t i o n , d ied of a h e a r t a t t a c k at h i s home at E a s t Wenatchee, Saturday, March 17, 1962. He was 61. He i s b e s t known t o t h e membership of our s o c i e t y f o r his work on l e a f s p o t fung i of g r a s s e s , and w a s t h e author of a highly regarded reference book publ ished i n 1950 e n t i t l e d "Diseases of c e r e a l s and g rasses i n North America.
