PRESIDENT’S REPORT 20172017 was another very busy and successful year for the Club. As has been the case in previous years the Board reviewed the Club’s strategic plan and set a list of short and long term objectives for the year.Pleasingly I can report we achieved our short-term objectives and most importantly we had another excellent year from a financial perspective, which will be outlined in the Treasurer’s report. Additionally, our membership numbers continued to grow and at the end of 2017 we had 537 playing members and 126 social members.Sadly, during the year three of our members passed away. Ian Winlaw, Garry ‘Chubby’ Hanchard and Jean Attenborough were all fantastic club members who all played a significant role in helping develop the Club in different ways. May they rest in peace!During the year we welcomed the following course sponsors: DNA Pest Control, Alpine Glass and Pelican Solicitors, whilst Shoalhaven Escapes became one of our scorecard sponsors. Like all our Club sponsors their financial support is very much appreciated. In April, after approximately four months work, the painting of the exterior of the Clubhouse was completed. At the time we received many favourable comments. I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work done by members Chris Pasterfield, Arthur Laidlaw and Harry Delany who were ably led by Peter (Van Gogh) Badman. In May the upgrade of the electrical supply to the Clubhouse and Greens shed was completed. This was a $41 654 project that was funded by the Commonwealth Government and the Club. Thanks to Stuart Bramley Electrical for undertaking this work and to Garry Hoare who took on the role of Project Manager. Garry spent a significant amount of time following up the commissioning of the new electricity supply, which finally happened in July.In June the garden outside the Clubhouse entrance was developed and enhanced with Kwik Kerb edging. I would like to acknowledge the work of Craig from Plantique who designed the garden and helped some of our Bushcare volunteers in undertaking the actual planting. Thanks also to Paul Davies and Chris Pasterfield who repaired the sprinkler system in the garden. In July the Club held our inaugural Sportsman’s night at the Heads Hotel. Thanks to Col Waller for hosting the night and to the organizing team of Mark Henning, Glenn Askew and Lee and Leslee Maddinson who were instrumental in ensuring the night was a fantastic success. The funds raised on the night will be used to construct a new practice green, bunker and chipping area. This work is scheduled to start in March of 2018.In August we improved the aesthetics of the entrance to the car park with the construction of gates for the waste management bins. Life member Kevin Huckel did a fabulous job in the design and construction of the gates. Thanks Huck!In October we held our annual corporate day with a record number of 30 teams competing on the day. This proved to be another successful day for the Club with $6 040 raised. November proved to be a very busy time of year. Early in the month we held our annual Cancer Charity day. This was another fantastic and fun filled day that was well patronised and raised a record amount of $10864, which was donated to the

Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre. This day would not have been successful without the detailed planning and hard work of Connie Parrish and Gary Salway. A week later saw the reconstruction of the two bunkers on the 7th fairway. Since their completion we have received many favourable comments from members and visitors alike. Thanks to the greens staff, who used the project as a training exercise under the guidance of Darby Muller Golf Shapes, for doing such a superb job. This month also saw a 20Kw solar panel system installed on the greens shed roof. Repower Shoalhaven were responsible for this work, with some club volunteers undertaking the laying of the electrical cabling from the shed to the power board. Final commissioning will take place early in 2018.In early December the carpet in the Clubhouse was replaced and the vanities in the toilets were replaced. Thanks to sponsor Gary Podmore from David John Kitchens and Joinery for undertaking this work and to member Mark Murray who has since done the tiling and grouting to complete the work. Both have, in my opinion, made a significant improvement to the interior of the Clubhouse. Also in December the Club converted from a septic system to a sewerage connection. This work, which was completed by Parrish Plumbing included a new grease arrestor. Funds received from State Government paid for this work. Thanks go to Gareth Ward for his support on this project.Sadly from our perspective our Business Manager Rebecca Hardy resigned in December. Rebecca was instrumental in streamlining our financial system and she did the required work efficiently and effectively. Jessica Cassidy, who is also doing an excellent job, has replaced her.One of the objectives the Board set itself during the year was further improving our communication to members. Pleasingly, I can report that we have achieved, to a significant extent this objective. First and foremost the Club’s website has been significantly improved. Di Knoll, Mark Henning and Glenn Askew with input from Greg Collins and with the professional help of website designer Bruce Martin, have done a marvelous job upgrading our website.Additionally, Mark was instrumental in creating our Facebook page and Peta Griffin keeps it updated. Mark has also trained several of us on how to use Mail chimp. This is the software that we use to produce and distribute our quarterly newsletter and other relevant information. Hopefully, our members are finding this an effective way for the Board to communicate information. Also, I must acknowledge Glenn Askew, who regularly conveys information to members via the Clubhouse TV. I hope you agree that he is doing a fabulous job!At this point in time I want to thank Felicity Percival who towards the end of 2017 resigned as our Publicity Officer. Over the last couple of years Felicity has done a great job taking photos and compiling our newsletters. Hopefully we will have a replacement in the near future. As you are all aware the success of our Club is largely a consequence of our volunteer base. Throughout the year there were 5634 recorded hours of work undertaken by our many volunteers with course improvements in abundance. The most obvious of these are the additional cart paths that were constructed during the year. Thanks to Geoff Collins who is becoming an expert on the bobcat and to Pat Herrick and his team who are instrumental in this work. Other volunteers have focused on tasks such as tidying up bunker surrounds such as on the 13th fairway, trimming low lying branches and eradicating ants and Parramatta grass from the course.

Of course, it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention the great work done by the Bush care group every Monday. Ably led by Noel Schneider this group conscientiously ensures we meet the stringent vegetation management requirements of Shoalhaven City Council. Thanks also to Paul Davies who spends countless hours overseeing the course irrigation, Bob Margerison who regularly mows the rough, Gordon Howes who ensures the Club surrounds are always in pristine condition and Terry Simister and Greg Wood who do the on course garbage run. In the Clubhouse we continue to be fortunate to have many volunteers who regularly undertake important and necessary tasks. Bob Cookson and Col Parrish ensure the beer lines are cleaned every Monday, Greg Montgomery is responsible for maintaining the stock, whilst David Wilson and Brian and Lorraine Rowe check the bar takings every day. Although there are far too many to acknowledge personally I want to thank all the Club members who assist with bar duty each and every month. Your efforts are very much appreciated.Of course, the primary factor in our continued success is being able to provide an excellent golf course week in, week out. Obviously this is a consequence of the diligent and conscientious work and insightful planning undertaken by our greens staff Tony Orford, Brendan Dunphy, Chad Casinelli and Damian Spleta. Your efforts are very much appreciated by our members! Thanks also to our Pro Shop team of Cec Montgomery, Peta Griffin and Paul Ryan who are ably led by our Golf Professional Greg Collins. In the time Greg has been at the Club he has introduced some excellent initiatives, most notably the Summer teams competition which has seen quite a few participants become Club members. Many Club members and visitors enjoy a meal or snack during or after their game so it is important we have a suitable variety of food available at reasonable prices. In this regard I want to thank Lorraine and Kevin Franklin and their team at the Heads Café. I must acknowledge the tremendous work that has been done by retiring Director Harry Delany and his wife Pauline in developing our young juniors. Your efforts are very much appreciated. Finally, I once again want to thank all members of the various committees we have in the Club. To the Vets, Ladies, Match and Greens and House committee members - your role in helping ensure this Club runs smoothly is paramount and you have yet again done a fabulous job. To the Board for their vision for the Club’s development and for the support they give me. I believe we meld very well together as a team and this is instrumental in the steady growth of this Club.

TREASURER’S REPORT 2017The overall result for the year ended 31st December 2017 was a profit of $88,098. This result includes a once off grant of $38,917 so the underlying result is $49,181. The previous year’s equivalent result was $30,873. Once again this is a very good result and enabled significant “free cash flow” to be generated to allow the Club to undertake capital works such as connecting our sewer to Council’s mains, the installation of solar panels on the greenkeepers shed, upgrading carpets and bathrooms in the clubhouse, new front car park fence, new greens roller, new greens mower, new bunkers on the 7th, and continuing work on cart paths. Excess cash of $40k has also been set aside to provide financial security for the Club into the future. Listed below are a number of comments associated with the year’s trading –INCOME• Bar trading profit was $136k, up 10% on the prior year.• Green Fees were $348k, up 9% on the prior year.• Membership subscriptions income was $213k, on par with last year.• Sponsorships and fundraising were $57k, up 85% on the prior year.• Total Income from normal trading (ie excluding grants) amounted to $843k or 8%

higher than the previous year.EXPENDITURE• Course maintenance expenditure, including wages but excluding depreciation,

totalled $342k ,which is similar to the prior year. Being able to maintain the course in a controlled budget manner is a tribute to our Head Greenkeeper Tony Orford, his team and the volunteers around the course.

• Insurance charges increased by 21% as we got caught up with across the board insurance industry increases.

• The Catering retainer increased by $10k as planned. This has been done as a way of underwriting the caterer’s financial situation, whilst also ensuring our members continue to have a food service provided.

• Total expenditure excluding depreciation was $690k or 6% higher than the prior year due largely to the abovementioned increases in insurance, the caterer’s retainer plus increased commission payments to the Golf Professional due to higher green and competition revenue achieved.

BALANCE SHEETThe balance sheet remains strong and during 2017 it was strengthened further. The Total Equity (value) of the Club increased by $88k during the year and now totals $1.26m. The Club’s only bank debt relates to borrowings for the leasing of course machinery. These total $46k and is repaid monthly as part of the normal operating budget. 2018 BUDGETThe 2018 budget forecasts a similar underlying profit to 2017. Funds are on hand to pay for the new practice putting green with funds allocated to continue work on cart paths and to upgrade the Greens Shed to ensure compliance is maintained with Workplace Health and Safety requirements. It is also planned to again set aside surplus funds of up to $30k for adding to the “future fund’ initiated in 2017 to underwrite the Club’s financial security into the future. PRO SHOP REPORT 2017The 2017 calendar reported an average of 99.1 players per day on the golf course, which is an exceptional number that members and staff should be proud of. A major factor in the club’s growth is the condition of the golf course. I cannot speak highly enough of Tony, Brendon, Chad and Damian for their efforts. Onto the major events and this year we added another two Holden Scrambles to our fixtures. A second mixed Scramble was added on the success of last year’s national final qualifying team. In these two events we had over 180 players participating, which qualifies three teams to the regional finals to be played on Tuesday March 13th 2018 at Macquarie Links. So at the AGM we will hopefully have the good news that for the second time in the Club’s history we have a team qualifying for the national final.Further to the Scramble success we also hosted the first ever ladies only scramble in our district. The event was a great success and will be a permanent fixture on our calendar. Over 80 players from clubs in our area competed and the winners were Louise Barnes, Cheryl Grinlinton and Suzie Collins from the Heads and Jeanna Walsh from Nowra. Unfortunately, Cheryl will be unavailable so Leslee Maddinson will fill her spot in the quest to make the national final. To Sean Ryan and the team at Nowra City Holden we cannot thank you enough for your continued support and we look forward for a long association with your company.Mark Johnston who set a course record 5 under 66 with an eagle on the last won our annual Macey Insurance Open tournament. This record still stands and will take some beating. Mark won by a massive 6 shots in a field with 50 players off a handicap of 5 or less. Well done, Mark and good luck in 2018. Our Club captain Geoff Collins who tends to excel in stroke play events won the nett event. Well done to all those who competed. A big thank you must also go to Paul Brown, Brendan Goddard and the team at Macey Insurance for their continued support. We look forward to a long affiliation with your business. The Heads Hotel Summer Teams Competition continues to grow each year. This year there are 23 teams involved and we are averaging around 170 players per week. With the dominant Heads Hotel teams struggling this year we are set for a close finals series and new winners on Grand final day on Sunday March 25th. Once again we must say a big thankyou to Col Waller and the team at the Heads Hotel for your continued support. In the Pro Shop Peta Griffin joined the team after Danny Wenborn left and Peta is doing a great job. It is great to have someone with so many years of customer service experience to go with being the Club champion and course record holder in the shop. I also want to acknowledge Paul Ryan who helped out throughout the year and recently underwent a knee replacement. Thanks for your efforts and all the best with your recovery. Cec, Dan and myself all had knee surgery the previous year so we know the pain you are going through in rehabilitation. Good luck with your recovery.I can’t go any further without thanking Cec. Mate you help out at the busy times on the weekends, you know everything about the place and you are irreplaceable. Your efforts are certainly appreciated.

I also want to thank Barney Curran who cannot do enough for us as the Vets Captain. Your help is greatly appreciated.I also want to acknowledge our sub committees. Our Vets, Ladies, House, Match and Greens all do a great deal of work that is underestimated. Congratulations on a job well done and keep on moving forward. Thanks also to our Business Manager Rebecca Hardy who left us in December for a career change. Lastly, I feel it necessary to say a few words about our outgoing Board. In the age of clubs struggling financially we operate against that trend. We have increasing members and playing numbers along with a healthy financial situation. Our Directors have done a great job and for those of you who are stepping down let’s hope that the new Directors can only continue on the path you have created. Whilst I rarely single out Director’s contributions I have to credit the work done by President Rob Russell and Secretary Glenn Askew. To me these guys put in far beyond what is expected of them and our Club is only better for their efforts. Well done gents and keep up the exceptional work!Thank you to all our club members for your continued support.

VETERAN GOLFER’S REPORT 2017The Heads Vets have had a very successful 2017. Our present membership is approximately 117 with fields, including visitors each week, averaging 80 to 100. We are joined most weeks by in excess of 16 lady golfers, which allowed us to give them a separate prize. Interclub events were once again well supported with full teams competing. The Vets have provided funds to assist with:• Fertiliser for use on the greens and fairways• Purchase of sand for use in coring of the greens• Continuation of the cart path project. Special acknowledgement of the great work carried out by Pat Herrick and his team of volunteers, ably supported by Geoff Collins with Strongbuild’s bobcat and truck. In February last year, our club once again had the privilege of hosting Day 1 of the 2017 Mid South Coast Veterans’ Week of Golf when 130+ players enjoyed our magnificent course, the club and our hospitality. Many compliments were received and return visits assured. The day was a great success, due to the efforts of our willing band of volunteers, led by Vets Captain Brian Curran. Thanks also to Greg Collins and his team in the Pro Shop for assisting with this event. We look forward to being a major part of this event once again in 2018. The Balkwill – Simmons Shield, an annual medley event between Callala and the Heads Vets, saw The Heads successfully retaining the Shield. The Lee/Wellard Shield, an annual competition played between the Heads and Nowra Ex- Services, Worrigee since 2004 resulted in another good win for The Heads – Scoring 391 to 308. The Bolong Bucket, a “friendly” contest between The Heads and Nowra Vets resulted in a win for The Heads. The Heads Vets Championships were well supported and closely contested with a play- off required in A Grade for the first time ever.A Grade Champion: George Vlatko Runner up: David Lamb. Welcome is extended to Brian Rowe who joins us as Secretary and Trevor Duncan to our committee. We look forward to working with these gentlemen for many years.Once again at our Presentation Day this year we were delighted to show our appreciation to the students from Vincentia High School who do a remarkable job on the course on Thursdays under the guidance of Ian Asbury. Gift vouchers were presented to all.Vale to Garry “Chubby” Hanchard - Garry was an active volunteer around the Club and will be fondly remembered by all. We also very recently sadly lost another valued member, John McGuirk. On behalf of the Committee and all members, I would like to thank our Pro shop staff and caterers for their continued assistance throughout the year. Thanks also to Tony and the greens staff as well as the volunteers for the presentation of our course, giving us something to be very proud of. Thanks also to the regular volunteers who assist with serving refreshments to quench our thirst. I take this opportunity of thanking Club President Rob Russell and the Board members for their continued support. Special thanks indeed to all of our volunteers who assist with the mowing of the course and in a myriad of ways around the clubhouse. Finally, thank you to the Vet’s committee for their ongoing contribution and assistance.A big thank you to Captain Brian Curran who prepared last year’s report in my absence.

The activities they undertake include:

• Mowing the fairways and the roughs• Clearing lantana and creating environmental areas around the course• Propagating and planting plants and shrubs• Filling divots on tee boxes• Collecting rubbish around the course• Whipper snipping around bunkers and greens• Building cart paths and other course additions• Running the bar in the Clubhouse• Extending and renovating aspects of the Clubhouse

This past year the Board has seen small bands of volunteers taking responsibility for a specific hole on the course.

The work undertaken by these small bands of volunteers included:

• Planting shrubs and small gardens around the tee box area• Removing Parramatta grass and other noxious weeds from the fairway• Trimming overhanging branches that encroach on the hole between tee and green• Removing fallen branches that have fallen on the fairways and roughs of the hole.

If you are interested in forming a small working party, and willing to beautify a particular hole on the course, speak to Tony Orford or any of the Greens staff or a Board Director who will be happy to listen to your plans.

One of the key ingredients of the success of our Golf Club is our volunteer base.As you are all aware, our volunteers carry out a variety of activities each and every week throughout the year.
