The BHA After-SchoolEnrichment Program recentlybegan a coding class for 3rd and4th grade students. This class isfree, and each student hasaccess to a laptop computer,tablet, and headphones to createtheir own applications. With thehelp of an Elon student, thestudents in the coding class havealready created their first app.These students are very excitedabout the new knowledge andpractical skills they are gaining.

We have partnered with Goodwillto establish a Youth EmploymentProgram for middle and highschool students. Members of thisprogram learn essential skills fortheir future careers. Thesestudents also participate in jobshadowing tours at facilities suchas Precor, the HVAC,Mechatronics, Welding &Automotive programs atAlamance Community College,and Woodforest Bank.

Elon University students arecurrently working with 1st-4thgrade students in the BHA After-School Program to encouragehealthy eating and livingpractices. Elon students havedeveloped an age-appropriatecurriculum including activitiessuch as planting seeds in indoorplanters, attending the NorthPark Farmers Market, andsupplying simple, healthy recipesfor families.

Burlington Housing Authority partnered with EbenezerChurch of Christ to bring 27 students on a three-day collegetour over spring break. Students toured the University ofGeorgia, Clark University, Spelman College, MorehouseCollege, Johnson & Wales University, and Johnson C. SmithUniversity. These tours allow our students to take control oftheir future through exposure to educational opportunities,empowerment of their own skills, interests, and capabilities,and networking with other community members.
The Order of the GoldenCircle sponsored an EasterEgg Hunt for the BurlingtonHousing Authoritycommunity. The eventfeatured face painting,food, bouncy houseactivities, and prizes for allwho attended.

Senior Resident Series
We recently began a new seriesof programming for ourresidents who are 65 and older.We began this series with a"Cookies and Conversation"discussion on what they wouldlike to see from BHA. Sincethen, we have had game days,low-impact aerobics classes,and are planning a movie nightand other fun activities in thefuture. We hope these activitieswill engage our seniorresidents and encouragerelationship building in thesecommunities.

With summer approaching, we are excited about our communitiesbeing active. Some fun-filled summer ideas can include hiking,walking in the park, going to the farmer's market and spending timeoutside with family. Our community gardens are flourishing and weare thrilled to see residents taking part in planting and harvesting.Here's to a wonderful summer season!
