FOCUS ON
Ultraviolet systems have found their way into moreapplications than could be
listed here. Users have found that UVis effective at destroying microorganismssuch as bacteria and viruses, it hasshort contact times, requires nochemicals and is relatively easy tooperate and maintain. UV systems aremost effective when combined withother treatment such as carbon filters, reverse osmosis systems or softeners.Applications such as hospitals, coolingtowers, bottled water and foodprocessing, electronics andpharmaceutical plants are reaping the rewards of UV technology.
Here are some types of UV productsavailable on the market today. Fromsystems to components, the followingarticle will give you a snapshot of theultraviolet marketplace.
Installation and Service EaseThe TrojanUVMax ultraviolet systemfrom Trojan Technologies (write in1200) is built with a footprint that ishalf the size of traditional systems.
It requires no tools for servicing, making it a user- and installer-friendlyproduct. The company also offers 24/7 service support, proactive lampreplacement programs and free watertesting services with this product.
Flexibility and Close ContactWith Coiled TubingThe twist-in water purification coilsfrom Markel Corp. (write in 1201)offer a low ID-to-coil ratio, resulting inclose proximity of the liquid to the UVlight source. This product featuresFEP, a high-temperature inertfluoropolymer that offers good UVtransmissivity, which minimizes power

R-Can Environmental, Inc. (write in1202) are NSF/ANSI Standard 55certified for disinfection Class Aperformance. A total of eight systemsin the series include a Platinum ICEcontroller and Flow-Pace UV sensorthat allows the flow pacing of thesystem (the lamp power is reducedwhen there is no flow). Flow ratesrange from 1.5 to 20 gallons per minute (gpm).
Clean Quartz Sleeves Without Interruption
The Sanitron Model S2400C (40 gpm)and larger (83–416 gpm) units fromAtlantic Ultraviolet Corp. (write in1203) come with a patented dual-actionwiping mechanism to facilitate periodiccleaning of the quartz sleeve withoutinterruption of purifier operation. Thesystems are constructed of 316 stainlesssteel, have dual heads that can beremoved or rotated and confrom to theU.S. Public Health Service Guidelines.Units also feature fused quartz sleevesto ensure maximum lamp outputregardless of water temperature, glowing sight port. The flexible designallows for retrofitting into virtuallyexisting systems.
Low Level Mercury Lamps
Philips ultraviolet lamps fromUltraViolet Devices, Inc. (write in1204) contain a low level of mercuryand provide greater than 80 percentoutput at 9,000 hours of use. Ballasts

from 10 to 200 gpm. The company alsois expecting up to 3,500 gpm by thesecond quarter 2004. The systems havelow pressure, high intensity lamps thatoffer three times the intensity of lowpressure, low intensity lamps. Manyoptions are available such as TypeUCA Sensor that provides protection
waterborne diseases and provide dualbarrier disinfection.
Industrial Systems for OEMsThe new CHI series of industrial UVsystems from Wedeco UltravioletTechnologies (write in 1208) is designedfor OEMs and end users that havestringent water purification require-ments. The series offers flow rates
and quartz sleeves available as well asOEM manufacturing services for UVtreatment devices.
RO/UV Systems
The TGI-625UP six-stage RO/UVsystem with pump from TopwayGlobal, Inc. (write in 1205) combinesRO purification and extruded carbonfiltration technologies for high-qualitywater in the home, office or remoteprivate well. Production rate is 7.2 gpdwith storage tank that holds 2.8 gallonsof filtered water.
Residential, Commercial and Small Communities
The Hallett UV systems from UV PureTechnologies, Inc. (write in 1206)employ the patented CrossfireTechnology for use in residential, commercial and small communitydrinking water applications. Thesystems are NSF/ANSI 55 Class Acertified and are an effective UVtreatment system with little to nomaintenance and easy installation.
Marine Industry Systems
The CleanSea Vanguard watertreatment systems from HydoxylSystems (write in 1207) are availablefor the marine industry for disinfectionand treatment of drinking water andpool/spa water onboard cruise ships, naval and ferry fleets. The systemsreduce chlorine usage, protect against

Particle Size Doesn’t MatterThis line of cold cathode UV fluorescentlamps from Gilway Technical Lamp(write in 1209) are unaffected bypathogen particle size. The lampsfeature spectral distributions of 300 to
400 nm with a peak wavelength of 350nm, and 200 to 300 nm with a peakwavelength of 254 nm. The lampsoperate from 5 to 12 VDC inverters, creating design flexiblity by notrequiring ballasts.
Longer Exposure TimeThis compact undersink system fromLife Flo, Inc. (write in 1210) uses a
Teflon water coil that eliminates thecleaning intervals and provides longerexposure time. The double pass featureexposes the water to the UV both pre-and post-filtration, eliminating 99.99percent of bacteria and viruses.Carbon block and GAC filters reducecontaminants, providing purifiedwater at 1 gpm. or facilities. If you go to your next call thinking you are selling a $3,995conditioner for $4,500, you will failmiserably. It is all in our heads.
Also, eliminate everyone that seeks to get you down. This could be family, friends or other salespeople. There isonly one reason they un-sell you ...they want you to fail. When I first got into the water business, my wifetold me she thought soft water feltslimy, and she didn’t like it. I sat herdown and explained that I was in thisbusiness and that if she wanted to eatand if she wanted me to be successfulshe would have to convince herself thatsoft water, my company and the brandI sold was the greatest thing sincesliced bread. She did it and thatcontributed a lot to my success.
Remember that customers can seedirectly into your soul. You can fool afew of them into buying a product youdon’t believe in or you think is overpriced but in the end, you will fail.
No one is as naturally optimistic as you need to be for success in selling. You need to practice and develop ituntil it becomes a part of you.
Take the time to develop your optimism.Wipe out all negatives and sell yourselfevery day. You will find it makes a bigdifference to your sales and yourmental health. WQP
