Dear Readers

I have little knowledge about soccer, and understandably, the Great Singapore Sale commands a greater interest inmy leisurely priorities. But I am clearly aware of the numeroussoccer fans sacrificing their beauty sleep and overloadingon caffeine just to survive the wee hours of the morning, tocatch the Euro Cup live on TV. Just watching the matchesover TV can already have a fully-grown man squeal withdelight or grunt in anger, imagine watching the match livein Portugal!!! Jed, our feature photographer of this month, not only watches the matches live, he also gets to rub shoulderswith famous footballers, thanks to his interesting job as aprofessional sports photographer with a London-basedagency, Sportbeat Images. Besides sports photography, healso has an extensive collection of images in other variedfields, with particular passion on wildlife.

On another exciting note, the winner for last issue’sPhotography Contest is Mr Joselito L. Guevarra. His winningentry, ‘The View in My Window’ was artistically taken witha Nikon F65. This caught our judges’ attention amidst manyother good submissions. Good equipment does play asubstantial role in photography, but the visual manner inwhich one interacts with the subject, plays a bigger part ingetting that captivating shot. ‘Macro Shot’ is the theme forthis issue’s Photography Contest. To offer some informationand hopefully kick-start your passion in this field, my colleague,Max Sim, has spent some time researching and writing thearticle ‘World on Macro Photography’.

Don’t miss out our Q&A contest on Pg 30, this time we aregiving away a CF 512MB Lexar Media Card worth S$200.

The fast lens of the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED can also be combined with the additional benefitof VR (Vibration Reduction) - an innovation that makesit possible to take quality handheld shots indoors andin dark locations with a reduction in blur equivalentto when shooting at a setting three stops faster. VRperformance is further augmented by a VR selectionswitch, which enables the photographer to choosebetween two different VR modes to best suit the subjectat hand - Normal mode is ideal for most commonshooting conditions, panning, and use in combinationwith a tripod. Active mode, as its name suggests, isbetter suited to conditions involving more movement, such as when the photographer is shooting from amoving vehicle, for example.

When used with Nikon D-SLR cameras, the focallength of the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-EDincreases by a factor of 1.5. Similarly, picture anglealso depends on whether the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mmf/2G IF-ED is used with a 35mm film camera or aNikon D-SLR. When used with a 35mm film camera, the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED offers anangle of view of 12˚ 2'. When used with a Nikon D-SLR, the lens offers an angle of view of 8˚.

A FAST TELEPHOTOLENS WITH VIBRATIONREDUCTIONAF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announcethe introduction of a fast telephoto lens with VibrationReduction developed for use with both Nikon digitaland film SLR cameras - the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mmf/2G IF-ED.

An important addition to the acclaimed range of EDlenses, the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED iscrafted from Super ED glass, which is significantlymore resilient than fluorite and offers class-aboveoptical qualities. It also achieves exceptional expressivepower through the incorporation of fast f/2.0 capabilitywhich effectively allows subjects to be given moreemphasis by throwing background elements out offocus - enabling effective portraits free from distractingelements and the adding of impact to smaller partsin expansive scenes.

For the ultimate in focusing convenience, a switchlocated on the bottom of the lens gives swift accessto the AF-L function, which allows a desired focusposition to be easily preset. The same switch can alsobe used to access the AF-ON function too, whichenables the photographer to achieve more subjectivefocus with fine manual manipulation. It also activatesthe handy function that allows the lens to revert backto the preset focus position whenever desired.

The AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED can also beused in combination with the TC-14EII teleconverter, the new TC-17EII teleconverter and the TC-20EIIteleconverter too, which increase focal lengths by afactor of 1.4x, 1.7x and 2.0x respectively.

The use of such teleconverters is an ideal way ofadding further versatility without the expense andweight of additional lenses. Indeed, just by carryingthe AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED and theaforementioned three teleconverters, photographerscan gain access to a range of focal lengths that wouldnormally be only possible with four different lenses.

The AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II also has the abilityto communicate with the signals from most lenses.Furthermore, it supports the convenient Nikon VibrationReduction (VR) function, has a design that is consistentwith the current TC-14EII and TC-20EII, and Eco-Glass is also used.

THE FIRST TELECONVERTERLENS TO OFFER 1.7XPERFORMANCEAF-S TELECONVERTER TC-17EIITOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announcethe introduction of the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II- the first teleconverter to offer 1.7x performance.Designed exclusively for use with AF-S and AF-I lenses, the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II completes the Nikonlineup of 1.4x, 1.7x, and 2.0x compact teleconverters.

With dimensions of just 66 x 31.5mm (2.6 x 1.2 in.)and a weight of only 250g (8.8oz.)(approx.), the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II allows focal length to beextended by a factor of 1.7 times while retaining asense of overall comfort in the hand. Many suchteleconverters can also have a detrimental effect onthe speed of the lens, however the AF-S TeleconverterTC-17E II makes available f-stops only 1.5 stopsslower.

Teleconverters are ideal for adding photographicversatility without the high expense of an extra lens.Indeed just by carrying a single lens and a set ofteleconverters comprising the TC-14E II, the TC-17EII and the TC-20E II, a photographer can experiencea freedom of focal lengths normally only possiblewith four different lenses.

Compact and lightweight, the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E IIadds further versatility to AF-S and AF-I lenses

of your Nikon Coolpix Camera to shoot wonderfulMacro shots by providing useful tips.

1. Should I Use Flash When Taking MacroMost of the compact digital camera does not havean advance flash system that is able to cut down theflash power to a minimum value to give a correctexposure. Most of the time, it will over expose thesubject.

Another problem that can be created when usingflash is the casting of shadow due to the positioningof the flash and the lens barrel. For example theimage 1A(Right) was taken with Flash using Coolpix5200. The bottom right hand corner of the imageshows a circular shadow. This shadow is casted by

Macro or close up photography is an interesting field. It opens a whole wide range of subject that you canshoot. From close up shots of your collector coins tothe wonderful world of nature such as insects andflowers.

Macro photography needs not to have the top-notchequipment such as SLR with Macro Lens to accomplishthe task. Most of the Coolpix Camera even from thelowest range of Coolpix 2200 has a built in MacroMode that is capable of taking close up shot of 4cmfrom the subject. Amazingly the Coolpix 5400 pushesthe limit to a Super Macro of 1cm. Even professionalcamera may not be able to perform that close shot.

In this article we will teach you how to make full use

Image 1B(Below) is taken without flash. It is correctlyexpose with no shadow casted on it.

Taking Macro is recommended without flash especiallyfor reflective object like coins or for our case a pewterware.

2. How Do I Take Good Macro Without Flash? In the previous section, we mentioned that it is advisableto take macro without flash, however by switchingthe flash off, it will cause the camera to adjust otheraspect of the camera in order to give you a goodexposure. Most commonly adjusted setting is theshutter speed.

Image 1A: The image shown above is taken with flash at 4cm.

Image 1B: The image shown above is taken without flash at 4cm.

Shutter speed controls how fast the shutter open toexpose the image on the image sensor. The durationof the shutter will depend on the lighting condition. With flash, the camera will try to maintain a shutterspeed of 1/60 seconds most of the time. This willeventually prevent blurring of the image due to camerashake or from the movement of the object.

However if you take a macro shot without flash, thedigital camera will automatically adjust the shutterspeed to expose the image on the image sensor fora longer period of time. In this slow shutter speedsetting, the slightest movement of the camera willcause the image to be blurred.

To prevent this, our Nikon Coolpix camera comeswith a built in Best Shot Selector (BSS) mode. Thisbest shot selector mode will automatically turn off thebuilt in speedlight. The BSS Mode enables you toobtain sharp focus images without the use of flash.

The BSS mode works by taking a maximum of 10images of the same scene. Internally they will comparethe images and save only one image with the bestquality (Brightness, contrast and sharpness).

Image 2A : The above image is a macro shot of wordings found inour newsletter. You can see that viewing the “4.0” wordings at fullsize is sharp. This is with the help of BSS.

5. Getting The Correct ColorsWhen using external lighting, it may create a colorcast on your image. To overcome this issue, we canuse the camera to take a White Balance Preset.White Balance Preset is found in all Nikon DigitalCamera. It involves using a 18% Grey Card as asubject and using the camera to take a shot of theGrey Card in the lighting condition. This will causethe camera to memorize the cast and offset the colorcast accordingly. If 18% gray card is not available(Can be found in Photographic equipment shop), awhite piece of paper or anything that is white andfound in the same lighting condition can be use asa reference.

PG16

3. Getting The Correct Area In FocusMost of the compact digital camera will always focuson the nearest object that is to the lens. Therefore itmay not give you the desirable result especially whenyou are taking a macro shot with different depth likea flower.

Imagine if your object of interest is the innerflowerpollen, by using compact digital in Auto Modewill cause the flower pedal or twits in front of thesubject to be in focus instead of the flower’s pollen. Therefore it is useful to manually set the focusing areato the area that you want to focus on. Cameras likeCoolpix 8700, 5700, 5400, 5200 and 3700 willenable user to select different focusing area.

The below image 3A shows the screen capture ofCoolpix 5200 in the Manual Focus Area Selectionmode. User can selects an area from 99 focus areasmanually using the navigator dial.

4. Using External LightingIf BSS does not work well due to extreme slow shutterspeed caused by poor lighting, it is recommended touse external lighting such as a Halogen lamp or eventhe natural sunlight to help you brighten up yoursubject. A tripod can be useful to stabilize the shot.

Image 3A: The above image shows the screen capture ofCoolpix 5200’s Focus Area Selection Mode in action.

Image 5A: The above image shows the screen capture of CoolpixWhite Balance Preset in action.

Under the White Balance Preset Mode, the LCD Screenwill show a live preview screen. Positioned yourcamera in a way that the live preview screen is filledwith the gray card or white area. Navigate down toMeasure and confirm the option. This will cause thecamera to memorize the colorcast and offset for youaccordingly in the same lighting condition.Note : If you happen to move out of that lightingcondition, it is advisable to re-preset the white balanceor change it to auto to have a more accurate color.

CONVERTING QUICKTIMEMOVIE TO AVI

By Max Sim

With the implementation of unlimited movie recordingwith audio and at 30fps for our latest Coolpix DigitalCameras such as Coolpix 3200, 3700 and 5200,we have received quite a number of enquiries onhow to manipulate QuickTime Movie format (.MOV)from our Coolpix Cameras.

In this section, we will show you the tools that canbe downloaded freely from Internet.

Most of the consumers in Singapore are usingMicrosoft Windows as their operating platform; thevideo formats that are natively supported by Microsoftare AVI (Audio Video Interleave) and WMV(Windows Media Video). With the recent demand,Microsoft has included support for third party formatsuch as MPEG.

However as QuickTime Movie is a Macintosh’s Videoformat, Windows Media Player will not be able toplay back the movie. User will have to downloadand instal l QuickTime Movie Player fromwww.quicktime.com .

Similarly, if you wish to edit QuickTime Movie files, you will face lots of restriction to it.

Therefore to make editing of the QuickTime MovieFiles, you will have to convert the .MOV format to.AVI or .MPG, which Windows can readily acceptand allow you to edit.

How Do I Convert .Mov To .AviThere is tons of free software that is available on theInternet. You can do a search for “converting MOVto AVI” and it will list out all the application that you

6) The below screen will be shown when user clickon the “Convert a file” button. You can click onthe Browse button to select the directory to storethe video file to.

Note: The Video file in AVI Format can be very big.For example, a 12 seconds TV Mode Movie at 30fpswill become 44MB.

You can also make changes to the Brightness, bytyping any value above 100 will cause the movie tobe brighter and any value below 100 will cause itto become dimmer.

7) After finalizing all the settings, click on Convertbutton and a Windows will pop up as shownbelow asking for the type of compression to savethe new file as. For smaller file size and withbest compatibility with Windows Media Player,we chose Microsoft Video 1.

Microsoft Video 1 is a compress form thus it willresult in a poorer quality. If you are looking for thebest quality, you can choose to save the new videofile as Full Frames (Uncompressed) but it will resultin a huge file size. Use this only when you want toperform additional editing on it.

can use ranging from professional software that costfew thousands to free software.

In this short guide, we willrecommend BINK Video fromRADGAMETOOLS. I t is afreeware, which will allow youto convert MOV file to AVI filethat Microsoft’s platform canreadily support. BINK Video can be downloadedfrom www.radgametools.com/#Bink

Beside conversion, you can also adjust various aspectof the video such as Brightness and Contrast, Colorand even convert the Mono Audio to virtual Stereo.

1) Take a shot movie clips with your camera.Depending on the camera models, some of theolder models like Coolpix 4300, 885, 775 arenot capable of capturing movie with Audio.

2) Transfer the .MOV movie file to your local harddisk.

3) Install and execute Bink Video. The installationof Bink video is straightforward, download thefile from the website and double click the file toinstall it. Accept all the default settings and youare ready to go.

PORTFOLIO : JED WEEJed Wee began photography in 1997 at the age of 19 after having the chance to use his father's

manual focus Nikon equipment. Since then, his enthusiasm for his hobby has helped him develop

rapidly as a photographer, and after leaving university; he decided to pursue photography as

a career.

He is currently working as a sports photographer with the London agency Sportsbeat Images,

where he has been since 2001. His work has been published around the world including

newspapers and magazines in the UK, Norway and China among others. He has exhibited his

work in both Singapore and the UK, and his images have won him awards in various photographic

circles. In 2004 he was admitted to Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society, for his

portfolio in Visual Journalism. Jed’s aim is to always try to capture something different from the

rest, and this has resulted in a unique style of photography within the sports arena.

In addition to his sports images, Jed photographs a wide range of subjects, with a particular

passion for photographing wildlife. Working as a professional has not jaded him and he strongly

believes that he is as enthusiastic about photography now as the day he first picked up a camera.

Creating images gives him a buzz, and he is happiest when his images convey his vision.

Jed regularly gives talks and slideshows to local camera clubs in his home in the North East of

England, and is actively involved with the photographic society in his alma mater, the University

of Durham. Although he is settled in the area, he hopes one day to return to Singapore and

establish himself as a photographer in the country of his birth.
