We have been do-ing a 12 page Slipstream for the last 5 years. This one is 18 pages because of the contributions you have made. In fact,

there are still some whom I could not show because I ran out of room. Please be assured the issue in September will have more of you. Bill Webber • Vice President, Publisher: Email: [email protected]

The Left Seat Since being your President these last 1½ years, I am reaching my experience limits. We have grown so fast through the ef-

forts of the UFO Board Members (especially Bart Bratko, Bob Barker, Charlie Lopez, Bill Webber, and others) that I need help in reviewing our tax-exempt status, our accounting procedures, and our financial structure. The Right Seat When I became your Sec/Treas in 2007, there were 600 mem-bers. This was the 24th year of the UFO. A common opinion of us is one of general apprehension upon learning that a group of doddering oldsters are still flitting around in the sky. Dangerous, right?? Of course; got to be! There should be a law prohibiting such activity. It is incumbent on each and every one of us to correct that perception by clarifying at every oppor-tunity that obligatory medical and flight exams, recurrent training and vast years of experience keep us both safe and legal. 3 Months of Get-Togethers and Meetings

Reports On UFO Members That Had Local Meetings!! UFO

Charlie Lopez, the AR in Florida, found Dick Russell, Jim Bannerman and wives to do a wonderful fly-in. They had weather problems or there would have been more who at-tended. Refreshments, lunch and programs were followed by a tour of the open hangars from air coupes to warbirds.

This spring get together at Sanford Airport Cockpit Café was coordinated by Phil Gadbois and Al Hasapis. Phil Gadbois, Al Godburn, Dick Jackson, & Norm Houle and wives attended. Warren Alexan-der and his wife flew in from Albany, NY, having no-ticed the event on the UFO website calendar. After the luncheon, Phil and Al arranged a tour of the PBY project in the hangar across the field.

Howard Knutsen (83) and Buck Stewart (83) not only are UFOs, but they also belong to the OX-5 meeting at the Aviation Muse-um. When you live in Alaska, you better belong to any group that wants to tell how good they used to fly. Believe me, they have had some great stories up there. Remember that your health is involved. The more you socialize, the longer you will live.

May 10th Anchorage Alaska Meeting

April 25th South Carolina UFO members had a get-together lunch at The Flight Deck Restaurant in Lexington, SC. There were 6 members pre-sent for a good lunch and hangar talk. Seated clockwise around the table are Homer Keisler, Xen Motsinger, John Leonhardt, Jack Starling, Reece Hall and Neil Deye. We have a get-together lunch every 4th Thursday and all South Carolina UFO members and guests are invited.

Nancy Warren (84), UFO Board Member and Area Rep for IN, had 23 for this occasion. They gathered, met and welcomed. Then, with their docent, toured the Freeman Field Aviation Museum containing fascinating relics and stories of WWII. They had a great lunch, laughed at the aviation sto-ries.and gave out a bunch of prizes. Nancy explains the picture is of just a few because they were out of control all over the place having a good time.

May 8th NW of Philadelphia PA A regional meeting was held at historic Wings Field, Northwest of Philadelphia. In spite of heavy rain, 37 members and guests attended. In addition to great camaraderie, we learned about aviation dating back to 1930, and the well known pilots and early airlines that started at Wings Field. We

met in the prestigious Philadelphia Aviation Country Club, where AOPA was founded. Our host was Gerry Schwam. Hugh Horning, AR for MD and DE was Master of Ceremonies, and Ralph Baron took photos

This was the first Canadian get-together this year. Congratulations boys. From the left: David Mitchell (80), Terry Dexter (82), Garth Greenway (87), Murray Hurt (84) and Bob Collier (85). They have 9 members in Alberta over 482 nautical miles from North to South. It was a beautiful morning with great food and great friendship and a little bit of flying. Best wishes from ‘Way up here in the Trees in Canada’.

3 Months of Get-Togethers and Meetings Reports On UFO Members That Had Local Meetings!! UFO

The weather was crappy on this date and no one flew in. Al Losvar drove for 5 hours to get there. That shows how Washington UFOs feel about get-togethers. 27 had a great lunch with soup, salad and sandwiches. We had two featured speakers with well prepared presentations. Ar-nold Ebnetter of Woodinville, WA showed how he created an airplane and two years ago he broke a record for flying across the US in 18 hours non stop from Everett,WA to Williamsburg, WV. The second special guest was the Curator of the Paul Allen Museum at Paine Field showing many of the Air-planes they have that are still fly-ing.

South Florida Honors UFO South Florida members of the UFO were honored this year with the Claude Pepper Memorial Award by United Home Care in the category of "Active Living”. It was a gala night. A silent auction for charity purposes and 350 guests at $300/plate for a splendid dinner. Left to right in the photo are: Jose Fox, President of United Home Care, Ralph Squeglia 86, Bill Corley 80, Charlie Lopez 85 receiving the award from a Home Care Rep., Jim Eddy 81, Maddy Schnepp 84, Oscar Hernandez 82, Herb Gelhardt 83, Bill Siskind 88 and Nicole Albano, Bill's assistant (pilot and certified flight instructor) who embellished our wrinkled group with her youth & good looks.

This was the smallest UFO get-together this year, but it was a good one. From the left; Beth Webber, Pen-ny Wood, Bill Webber (89), and Warren Wood (82).

June 23rd Spokane WA

Dick Skultin (85), Area Director for MT, had reserved the airport restaurant for the third time. We had canceled two other days because of weather. Fourteen were in attendance that flew there in 8 airplanes. New members and old mingled over lemonade and told the stories of how good they used to fly.

Do You Want To Print Your Slipstream? If you have an email address, you receive this Slipstream via a notice in your email where you can go to the web site (UFOPILOTS.ORG) and read this edition and the older ver-sions of the newsletter. A great way to read it in printed form and to share a copy with your friends is to go to your local print shop and have them print out a copy. A place like Office Depot, Staples, the UPS store, etc. will be happy to go to the web site and print a copy. It usually costs about 35 cents per page and in no time you have a printed copy of the Slipstream. All you need to take with you is the UFO web site address UFOPILOTS.ORG

Ed started flying in 1954 in CA. He rented this Cherokee 160 while he was in Arizona. He has been renting some Cessna aircraft in Montana. He was fortunate to join just a few weeks ahead of the UFO get-together in Hamilton, MT.

Michael spent time in the Service, was a casino dealer in Las Ve-gas, and an engineer doing multiplexing systems all over the world. He retired in 1995 and bought land on an airport in Sandy Valley, NV. He learned to fly in 1997 at the age of 65. He owns a

Cherokee 140. These are the best years of his life.

Ian Macdonald (80) Fairview AB –Canada Ian started to fly in 1949 as an Air Force Cadet at age 17. He purchased this C-172 in 1999 and has been involved with Civil Search and Rescue. Living in Northern Canada, you get to use a plane about 1/2 the year. It is in the Hang-ar for the rest of the time.

Jeff Justis (80) Oxford, MS

Ed Gonsalves (80) Victor, MT

Jeff soloed in 1953 and has accumulated over 8600 hours. He went from a Piper Cub, C170, C172, Piper Apache and then a Twin Comanche. In 1987, he purchased a kit for an RV-6 and completed it in 2010. He still flies about 100 hours a year. During all of this time, he used planes in his

practice of medicine visiting clinics in Mississippi and participating in Orthopedics Overseas Pro-grams in the Dominican Republic.

This is in this issue because the editor put the wrong picture with his story in the last Slipstream. Skip learned to fly in a J-3 Cub in 1952. He has owned 17 airplanes from an Aeronica Chief to a Mooney. He was a professor of engineering for 30 years at Penn State University. For much of that time, he was the pilot for the department that operated aircraft on research projects and student in-flight experiments. He has written books on technical subjects for pilots and other non-engineering jobs. After some problems with the FAA, he bought an LSA Tec-

nam Sierra. This is the way to go when you are fighting

Ed Moates (80) Sedona, AZ Ed started flying in 1952. He became a CFII, MEI, ATP, CFI, Fixed wing and glider. In 1955, he stopped in at Sedona on his way to Las Vegas, met a neat local lady, a 700 hour pilot, who had flown 3 air races and was a CPA. They are still speaking!! Ed does flight in-struction in a CF182 and flies tours in the local area. He has 14,000 hours and over 4,000 instructing.

David Patton (82) Tucson, AZ David flew in the Air Force from 1952 to 1984 as a Fighter Pilot and 6 years in the U-2. He was a Simulator Instructor for Ameri-can Airlines from 1984–2001. He was with the Civil Air Patrol starting in 1981 as CFI and Mission Check Pilot. He received

the Wright Brothers Master Pilot award in 2006.

Most of his flying time was in Corporate Aviation flying politi-cians and celebrities. He spent 4 years piloting President Johnson. He formed his own aircraft sales company spe-

cializing in the sale of Corporate Jets. Angel Flights took his time for 5 years. Al has written an eBook which should be out presently, “My Journey West– A Pilot’s Life Time in Aviation”.

This also is in this issue because the editor put no picture with these de-tails in the last Slipstream. Al soloed in 1957 in the military. He eventu-ally became Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the B-47 Alert Aircraft. He became an Aerospace Engineer and retired owner of Ranger Engineering in Michigan. He found an RV-7A and completed it in 2008. He now flies

it between Michigan and Florida each year. It is great for this kind of flying.

Bob went into the Navy in 1955 and the Marines in 1956. He flew Jet Trainers, Panther, Cougar, Banshee and finished in 1965 with 400 hours in an A4 Skyhawk. He owns this L-39 Albatros and an MD-500 Helicopter. He believes he is the world’s oldest pilot of a tactical military jet.

Joe began flying in 1980 while visiting the University of CA. He got his license in 1982 on visits he made in Maine and Flor-ida. He then let his medical lapse. He has a British PPL and de-cided to commence flying in the UK. So on June 3, 2013, he soloed in a Piper Warrior and is ready to have more fun in life.

Dr. Joe Watson (80) Swansea, United Kingdom

Russ Hackett (80) Inverness, FL Russ began flying in the Navy in 1955. He completed 4 years and flew for United Airlines for 29 years, ending up in 757/767s. He moved to FL, and in 2011 finished an RV-7. It is designed for aerobatics, but his old body can’t take too severe of a “G” load anymore, so flight has been limited to less severe physical abuse. The RV-7 is a real “kick” to fly.

John Easton (80) Green Castle, PA

Bob Lutz (81) Ann Arbor, MI

John owns this Stinson V-77. He has flown 29,000 hours, starting in the Air Force. He then flew for United Airlines, and for corporate and civilian businesses. He just passed his medical and walks 18 holes of golf 3 times a week. You gotta keep in shape. This Stinson is a wonderful air-plane.

United Airlines hired him to teach the B-757 and B-767. He now flies with the Aspen Flying Club in his 172 and Diamond DA20.

Bob started flying in 1982 in a Piper Archer. He began using it in an aerial photography business that he started in 1988. He bought two Socata Trinidads and flew all over the states.

He purchased a Lancair IV. He has a CFII and A&P Certificate and has 3800 hours.

Bob Young (81) Mineola, TX

John Elwell (80) Anaheim, CA John soloed in 1966 when he was 33 years old. He has owned a Beech Musketeer, C183, C210, and this Mooney which he has had for 20 years. He has 1900 hours and has Multi Engine and Instructor ratings.

Bert Corwin (82) Rapid City, SD Bert got his private license in 1950 in a J-3 and has logged 2292 hours. He has flown over 20 different airplanes and now owns this beautiful Citabria 7KCAB. Don learned to fly in a Taylorcraft. He started with a Cessna 170, and then became fond of Beech, namely: 2 V Tails, Travelaire, 2 Barons, and then a Cessna 402. He presently has #24 of the Beech 36 of 1968. He has 3900 hours flying time and received his Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the FAA. His grandkids pictured here are good looking.

This is a new twist to the new members Bios. We usually have pictures of the pilot and airplane. This time, it is a picture of Bud and his family. Why?? Because the only one who didn’t fly was his wonderful wife Pat-sy. The 3 kids are all pilots. Bud joined TWA when he was 22 and flew DC-3, Martin 202, Constellation 049, DC-9, Convair 880, Boeing 707, Lockheed 1011, and Boeing 747. He has been a Flight Instructor for 49

years. The kids were a Boeing 727 crew with American Airlines and Fed Ex. Since then, Kim man-ages an Airport and Flight School, Tres is with American Airlines, and Melinda is with UAL.

Bud Cushing (83) Hinsdale, IL

Jim Cavender (81) Fort Worth, TX Jim is a pilot, but he also writes good stuff explaining the art of being a pilot. He has about 1200 hours working for a firm in 1950-1960 picking up repossessed aircraft. After that, he had heart surgery and has special issuance for flying. His comments: “I am perfectly content to bore holes in the sky in our modest C150 on those days where there is severe clear”.

Bob Boyd (82) Paradise Valley, AZ Bob just flew his Rans S-19 for the first time on September 15, 2012 with N1955 for the number. This is the fourth airplane he has built. His favorite was the GlasStar that he had for 11 years. It is just like a C-172. Because of heart problems, this airplane allows him to fly with only a drivers license. The LSA category is certainly becoming popular with the UFOs.

WY until 1978. He has flown 300 hrs/yr for 35 years with Charles Trower Aviation in Scobey, MT.

Tom has about 3000 hours and has been given the FAA Wright Brothers Master Pi-lots Award. He has owned a Piper Lance, Cheyenne and Navajo prior to a King Air-200 that he loved to fly. Some of his time was in the service flying off carriers with an All-Weather Attack Squadron on the West Coast some 50+ years ago. He is still involved as President of a company. He is planning to get checked out in a Piper Meridian or a Pilatus.

Tom Walker (80) Dallas, TX

Bob Ellson (81) Danbury, WI Bob has been flying off and on for about 45 years but on-ly has 600 hours of PIC time. All is VFR single engine. He retired in 1996 after 50 years as a quality control man-ager in manufacturing. Bob now lives in NW Wisconsin

in a recreational community called Voyager Village. It’s a great place to fly in for dinner or golf. (voyagervillage.com). He has a 1969 C-150J which he flies about 50 hours a year, mostly locally. He did fly it to Branson, MO in April to an army reunion. Bob is a fair weather pilot and it took 5 hours to get there and 5 days to get back because of a big snowstorm.

Bob has a 1946 Ercoupe that he has flown for 425 hours all around Florida. He finally started flying after he was 60 years old and he enjoys every minutes of it. He always wanted an Ercoupe since 1947 when he saw one while flying his model airplane. He finally got it!!! Nice going Bob.

Frank Mouch (80) Wesley Chapel, FL In 1957, a year before Frank was ordained a Catholic priest, he soloed. Shortly thereafter, he bought 1/3 of a Taylorcraft and pursued instru-ment training at Ohio State University. The seminary where he was employed bought a government surplus Twin-Beech, which he piloted for two years. For the next 11 years, he was dependent upon renting and borrowing aircraft, and it gave him wide experience in many different models. Around 1974, he joined a flying club in Columbus, OH, again with various models. Eventually a benefactor of the seminary donated a Seneca I, which he then soloed in and later replaced it with a Seneca II he then flew for 17 years. Having suffered a TIA and some heart surgery, he sold it and has rented ever since. Frank’s total flying time is about 3,400 hours in 33 different aircraft from the Taylorcraft to a DC-3. He is currently restricted to light sport aircraft. Frank is a charter member of the National Association of Priest Pilots. Welcome Frank— you are needed to say grace at our get-togethers!!!

UFO Clergy Presently we now have 4 UFO clergy; 2 Catholic Priests (Frank Mouch and Mel Hemann), a Catho-lic Bishop (James Timlin, member since 2010), and an Episcopal Priest (Conrad Nordquist). They are greatly needed to say grace at our get-togethers!!!

This is Mel flying his RV6/N298MH. Van’s news-letter reported that he was the first Roman Catholic priest to build and fly his own RV6. Mel began his flying in 1960 in an Aeronca Champ. He received

the Wright Brothers Master Pilots Award in 2011. His students can be found in all branches of the Military from the Pentagon to the pilots in jet fighters and helicopters. He has taught missionary pi-lots of all faiths now flying in Africa, Central and South America, and in the Pacific from the Philip-pines to New Guinea and Australia. He is a charter member of the NAPP (National Association of Priest Pilots). The RV6 has proven to be a very valuable tool in doing the Lord’s work in providing transportation not only for myself but for a lot of other people to Church related functions. During his 54 years of flying, he has accumulated almost 18,000 hours and is approaching 11,000 hours of dual given. As my Archbishop said, “He did it all while holding down a full time job.”
