Jan Collins 2011 Pick of the Litter!!
an Collins is a doer and a giver
without ever realizing just how fabu-
lous and appreciated she is.
Do you need agility help? Come up
and train with her.
Do you need her agility expertise at a
different location? Jan packs her van,
brings her equipment and sets it up
for us.
Need a photographer? Jan is always
willing and excellent.
Need some super cute Photoshop
gimmicks? Jan acts like it is candy do-
ing that for you.
Need a 20 acre farm? Jan volunteers
her facilities without a moment’s hesi-
tation. We have actually had to ex-
plain to her that the farm is her place
and not ours and we need to ask per-
mission and just not assume that C&P
"owns" her place.
All of this and she never thinks she is doing enough. Jan is the perfect ex-
ample of what Pick of the Litter should be!

2011-2013 Board of Directors
any thanks to Cathy Coo-
per for her excellent seminar
on Breeding Tips. In spite of
spitting rain showers and a
biting breeze, many of us
learned a lot from someone
who has been breeding for
over 30 years. Several partici-
pants asked for a list of the
reference materials Cathy
cited and made available to
the group. The right-hand col-
umn is a bibliography contain-
ing those materials. Please
send the newsletter editor ad-
ditional helpful resources and
they will be included in subse-
quent newsletters.
t Saturday's general meeting (October 2nd), the slate presented by the C&P GSMDC Nominating Committee
was approved. The new officers and board of directors for 2011-2013 are:
Huck Bother, President
Nancy Kechner, Vice President
Jenna Starr-Farling, Recording Secretary
Mary Jo Rasmussen, Treasurer
Michelle Charters, Director
Kris Featheringham, Director
Megan Westenmayer, Director
Phyllis Walker, Director
For those of you whose terms are over - Mike Starn, Jim Rasmussen, Cathy Cooper, and Jean Measell - thank you
for all your work over the past years. I know I'm echoing the sentiments of everyone in the club in wanting to say
thanks for your service on the C&P GSMDC Board. You've been crucial in helping make the club what it is today.
For those of you new to the board—welcome!

any thanks to
Susan Rhoades of
Keepstone Farm who
was our hostess for
the second C & P
sponsored herding
test. Master Shepherd,
Wink Mason, and
Susan were our es-
teemed judges. We
learned a lot from
them!
We had an incredible passing rate of 95%—38 of 40 teams qualified!
And 20 titles were earned!! Quite a success, I’d say. The two dogs who
did not qualify were very close to passing.
Next year, we will run two rings simultaneously for sure! It was our un-
derstanding we would have two rings this year but it was not set up that
way upon our arrival. Susan suggested we have folks try for the Junior
Herding Dog (JHD) title next year. Unlike the HCT, which is a certifi-
cate, the JHD is a suffix title. You need to earn two passing legs under
two different judges.
We also are looking at ways to make the running order more convenient
and predictable. Many of you had valuable suggestions for us—thank
you!
Once again, we are attempting to move the herding venue to the show
site next year and working with organizers to make it happen. Stay
tuned! In the meantime, please join me in congratulating the dogs who
earned their first of two legs toward the HCT (Herding Capability Test).

zzy set a new record, pulling 4200 lbs. This breaks the previous re-
cord he set several weeks ago. Gabby earned a 20x leg, Sirius a 20x leg,
Shay a 20x leg (this is Colleen's bitch Shilellagh I think is how it's
spelled), and George a 15x leg. Soullie was just not ready, so I gave
them their money back and she didn't compete. Izzy won most weight
pulled and highest % of body weight. Siri won 1st in class and George
2nd, Izzy won first in class, and Shay won 1st and Gabby 2nd in class.

Fun-filled Weekend!

hat a fun filled C&P weekend!
This is my 3rd year coming to Vir-
ginia from Michigan, and as always,
well worth the drive. It’s so wel-
coming and filled with laughter.
This year my goal was to get Tangee
and Millie their Herding Capability
Certificates (HCT)—and they did!
The herding is just priceless to par-
ticipate in, the shepherds are won-
derful with our dogs and our hu-
man mistakes. It’s fun to put our
Swissies to work and watch them
love their job. Hats off to Megan
Fletcher, who does such a great job
putting this event together!
Congratulations to Jan Collins!
"Pick of the Litter" A very well de-
served award. You’re my pick of
the litter, Jan. You’re always so
pleasant to be around and always
have a smile on your face. You wel-
come all, and I would love to play
agility with you sometime!
Hunters Head Tavern was amazing
as always! Kind of funny the things
you look forward to every year.
Darlene and Tracy the calendars are
fabulous! You two do an amazing
job putting these together. You're
an added bonus to the show. Some-
times its hard to see Darlene as her
face is always in the camera! Hee-
Hee!
I loved hearing Cathy speak about
breeding tips, you never can have
enough information. You're a won-
derful mentor, Cathy, and I hear the
love for our breed in your voice.
The prizes were spectacular! Go Jan
once again! Mary Jo I know you
made the balls on a tug rope which
all of my dogs love. I still have them
today, the poor sheep toys from the
herding are gone already. They were
cute while they lasted. Laura Bul-
lock I LOVED your caramel corn!
All I can say is Yummmm! It came
in real handy for the ride home.
Please if I have forgotten anyone,
I'm sorry.
I did bring home a new Champion,
CH Wildest Dream M. Genuine
Draft (Millie) and Tangee Select
Bitch for two days was icing on the
cake. Fun, Fun weekend! It’s a
must do show for those who have-
n't made it there yet. I'm looking
forward to next year!
Congrats to all the winners!
Lookey at the 2012 Calendars!!
hank you to Tracy and Darlene for the
dozens of hours it took to create the 2012
calendars. Because of their efforts the club
raised over $600!! The funds allow us to
purchase insurance, file our annual Incorpo-
ration papers, and provide no-cost lunch at
our activities. If you decide at the holiday's
you would like another calendar to give as a
gift, you can now go online and purchase
them at will by going to this LINK. Those two have volunteered to create a 2013 calendar—YIPPEE!! Now is the
time to start taking photos for next year! They carefully match photos to spe-
cific months—so take those fall-leaf photos in the coming weeks and send
them to Tracy and Darlene. Remember, no humans in the photographs!

Specialty Weekend Wrap-up
Mary Jo Rasmussen, Specialty Chair
can’t thank everyone enough for making this year’s Specialty a lot of fun.
From volunteering for a specific job (please see next page), to sponsoring a
trophy, to purchasing raffle tickets, to entering dogs in herding and confor-
mation, to joining us for hearty, delicious meals at the Head Hunter’s Tav-
ern—we had a successful weekend!!
One huge omission needs to occur next year, however. No weather fore-
casting—AH! Friday was our only good weather day. The wind, rain and
record low temperatures made showing dogs pretty miserable. But we hud-
dled up and carried on!
Sweeps
Many thanks to our Sweeps judge, Phreddie Sienkewicz. This was her first
judging assignment and she went about her work like a pro. She was very
impressed with the line up and has promised to write an article about her
experience for an upcoming issue of Swissy Licks.
Two Stand-out Accomplishments
Our specialty produced two very special accomplishments. First, Chuckie
Bothner now joins just a handful of Swissies who have earned a Rally Ad-
vanced Excellent (RAE) title. A dog must earn two qualifying legs in one
day, ten times to earn the title. Truly outstanding!
Next is Penzie. She was our Best of Breed winner for the Eastern Regional
Specialty and also took a Group 4 placement! Our girls don’t have this op-
portunity often enough so I know owners Joe and Carol Neuman, breeder
Phreddie Sienkewicz and handler Lisa McDowell are still beside themselves!
Changes Next Year
We are looking at some changes next year. Most noticeable is the dramatic
decrease in the cost of sponsoring trophies. Please see page 11 for your op-
portunity to sponsor a trophy!! We would also like to add a just-for-fun
puppy match, but our ever-expanding schedule makes it difficult to squeeze
in. Equally problematic is the unpredictable weather—gaiting young pup-
pies in extreme heat or driving rain seems counter-productive.
And we will try, again, to move the herding event to the plantation. Susan,
our shepherdess, is willing to bring her sheep and set up rings at the show
site. The grounds keeper is also excited about the possibility. Stay tuned!!

s many of you are now aware, on
September 18th, I proposed to my
then girlfriend, now fiancé, Jaime
Scott at the Berks County Kennel
Club show in Macungie, Pa. I had
known for some time I was going to
do it as the subject was commonplace
in our conversations, but the question
was, ―How was I going to do it?‖ For
those of you who know me well, I’m
not one for subtlety but being one of
the biggest days in a person’s life, it
had to be memorable.
I finally decided that it was going to
be done in the ring. Jaime and I had
met some time back and had shown
against each other over the last few
years, so it seemed the perfect setting.
As many times as we went ―down and
back‖ as competitors, it was the per-
fect metaphoric setting to set off
―down the next road of our combined
lives.‖
I made a few phone calls with some
people that I knew had to be there.
Family, close friends, etc and finally
settled on the date. Everyone was
sworn to secrecy, but more on that
later. Everything was rolling along as
expected and that was that. Plan-
ning was done. Wrong.
How could I forget? What about
the Judge? It’s his or her ring
after all and there is a schedule
to keep. Would I go through all
of this just to have the Judge
hastily clear us out of the ring
and dampen what should other-
wise be a spectacular day? I have
to look. Who is the Judge?
Luckily, it was Ms. Jean Fournier. I
sent her an email with my plan and
eagerly awaited her reply. What if she
said no? Would I have to change eve-
rything around and go with the cliché
romantic dinner by the scenic Schuyl-
kill River? I waited for Jean’s reply,
and waited. Had she received my
email? If she had, did she discard it as
simply being a stunt she wanted no
part of? Thankfully, for any of you
that have ever had the displeasure of
being near that filthy body of water
known as the Schuylkill River, she
didn’t. Approximately a week and a
half later, Jean sent me a very nice re-
ply that she thought it was a great idea
and had never heard of it being done
before and offered any assistance I
needed. And we were on for that day.
All of the planning was done. Those
that needed to know, knew and were
going to be there. Barring the ele-
ments frowning on us, we were set for
our day.
I had a month to go. Wow, this was
entirely too easy. All I had to do was
touch base with Jean on Saturday so
she knew for sure who I was and then
just keep up the ruse that nothing was
going on. Everything was flowing
smoothly and ticking like clockwork,
right? Wrong.
The ring! How the hell could I forget
the ring? This should be easy enough
right? Just go the local jewelry stores
and get the ring, right? Jaime usually
does a ―girl’s night‖ with her Mom, so
after work, off I went. I had done all
of the appropriate research into the
―C’s‖ of diamonds, color, clarity and
cut, so I thought I knew what I
wanted and off I went. At my first
stop, I spouted out all my newly ac-
quired diamond knowledge to the
salesperson and was pretty proud of
myself until she asked, ―OK, sounds
like you know what you’re looking for
in a stone, but what about the set-
ting?‖ Uh….I didn’t really think about
that. An engagement ring needs a set-
ting? Who would have thought about
that detail?
I proceeded to tell her that Jaime was
a professional dog handler and be-
cause of that I needed something a bit
more sturdy than the typical solitaire
(I did know that term, only because of
a Kay’s Jewelry commercial I saw the
day before.) She looked at me and
said, ―Aw, that’s great. My friend
Jenny has someone like that that
comes in everyday too that let’s out
her doggie.‖ I smiled and said, ―No,
you don’t understand, she is not a pet
sitter, she’s a professional dog han-
dler, for like, um, show dogs, you
know?‖ I guess she didn’t because all
I got was a big, toothy smile and a
head nod. I continued, ―Like on TV?

Let me try this another way. ―You
know, she has to wash all the dogs,
get them ready to show before taking
them in the ring?‖ Finally, the eyes lit
up. Success. ―Oh, she’s a groomer!‖
However. she told me she knew ex-
actly what I needed. Now we are get-
ting somewhere. A moment later she
came back with, you guessed it, a
solitaire. I smiled, thanked her and
walked out.
That’s pretty much how the rest of
the evening at every other place with
the exception of me making the mis-
take of mentioning crates to one
salesperson and how a solitaire
would likely get caught on one. She
felt the need to read me the riot act
about animal cruelty and how I
should be ashamed. Ugh.
No worries. I have plenty of time on
this. Wrong.
That’s when the big roadblock ar-
rived. I got sick. They weren’t sure
what it was, but I was confined to
being home and on bed rest. No
driving. That’s ok. My trusty friend
the internet will come through. I can
do more research and get my parents
to drive me back to the store the
next weekend when she goes away to
the shows in Massachusetts. Ha ha,
not so fast. Jaime, being the great
girlfriend that she is, decided to stay
home to make sure I was going to be
alright. Being even a better girlfriend,
she decided not to leave my side for
the next three weeks.
How am I going to get
out of this one.
Luckily, she finally
agreed to go on an over-
night ―girl’s night‖ with
Mom a full one weekend
before the event. Kudos
to my parents for coming
down and picking up my
son and me and off we
went. How things
changed. We went to a little local
place in Reading, Pa. I explained the
situation to the jeweler, whom my
Mom had used before and he looked
at me and said, ―I know exactly what
you need.‖ It turns out that he and
his wife were Portuguese Water Dog
people and getting ready to go to
their national. Things were looking
up. He walked over to the case,
grabbed three rings, that were all per-
fect. I picked the one I thought she
would like and we were done. Every-
thing was in place. My parents would
bring the ring on Sunday so I didn’t
have to hide it and all systems were a
go. I had a whole week to spare and
everything was in place. Wrong.
The show date was Sunday and the
plan was to do it after breed. Sunday?
What was I thinking? Everyone
heads right to the car for the ride
home after a long weekend. How
would I keep everyone there? A pan-
icked call to Katie and Randy
Markley and we had that covered.
They would be crowd control.
Check!
Then came the weather. There were
two shows in Gilbert, Pa on Thurs-
day and Friday. Both days were sup-
posed to be partly cloudy with sea-
son 70’s temperatures. We got there
before dawn and as the sun rose, I
saw nothing but a mass of dark gray
that portended the upcoming down-
pour we were going to have. Thurs-
day and Friday were spent running
through muck and trying to stay dry.
How would Macungie be on Sunday.
Well, can’t worry about that now.
Friday came and the weather cleared
up thankfully. On our way back from
Gilbert, we decided to stop at the
show site so that we and Jaime’s
friend Cassi Williams, who was stay-
ing with us, could set up. As we were
getting ready, Jaime informed me
how Berner’s were right after Swis-
sies on Sunday and she hoped she
had time to go back and get the
Berner and back to the ring. Aaagh!
Off to Jessy and Roxanne Sutton I
went for assistance. Ok guys, here is
the plan. I’m proposing on Sunday.
You’re in the first position, so which-
ever one of you are there, do NOT
let Jaime out of the ring. Check. One
more fire put out.
Then came the text from her Mom
saying how excited she was about
tomorrow. Of course Jaime had just
had my phone in my hand seconds
before. My hair is getting even grayer
Oct/Nov 2011 C & P Swissy Licks 13
and thinner, but everything is going
to work out. Not too many people
know. This is all going to work out.
We’ll go home tonight, have a nice
dinner, get some rest and tomorrow
is the big day.
Not so fast. One more hitch. While
Jaime was getting changed that eve-
ning, Cassi looks at me and says,
―Well?‖ with a big smile on her face.
I played dumb, which isn’t too hard
as I’ve had a lot of practice, and said,
―Well what?‖ How are you going to
do it tomorrow?‖ Trying to improve
on my dumbness, I said, ―Do what?
Show dogs?‖ She looked at me coyly
and said, ―You know. The proposal!‖
How did she know? It appears some-
one thought she would be in on it
and let it slip. Sorry Cassi, but now I
have to lie. I came up with a quick
story about how I was going to do it
tomorrow, but with being sick I had-
n’t had the time to plan anything.
Luckily, my poker face worked and
she fell for it. Come on big day.
Finally Sunday arrived. The butter-
flies were stirring, but it was here. I
waited patiently for ring time as I
tried to avoid eye contact with any-
one in the know. There was a quick
instance when someone mentioned
to Jaime, ―Did you see Erin?‖ and I
just about panicked as Erin
(McWilliams) is the breeder she
shows for and never comes to
shows. I quickly covered by saying
that this was the surprise she thought
I was planning and yes, indeed, she
was here. That was why she caught
me speaking to her the other night
about ring times.
Here we go. Ring time. Come on
Jean, let’s get through the classes and
to breed. This ring is burning a hole
in my pocket. Finally, winner’s bitch
has been named. Let’s get in the
breed ring. I see the smiles from
friends and family, who know what’s
coming next. Stop it. I’m nervous
enough. She’s going up the line. She
picked breed, best of winners, oppo-
site, the selects, it’s over. Jaime didn’t
win. She’s way ahead of me and
heading for the ring exit. Oh no, not
now. Not after all this planning.
All of a sudden I hear a painful,
―Ouch, oww, Jaime, Jaime, HELP
ME!‖ Roxanne Sutton is half dou-
bled over. She’s holding her foot off
the ground in obvious pain. Jaime is
going over to her and helping her.
Roxanne’s arm over her shoulder,
Jaime’s arm around her waist. Every-
one is looking. Oh no. I’m sorry
Roxanne, but now? Why now? I
stand there dumbfounded. How can
I propose when she is in obvious
pain?
Then the wink and head nudge
comes from Roxanne. It was the
body language equivalent of, ―C’mon
dude. You asked me to keep her
from leaving. The rest is up to you.‖
That’s when it happened. With our
families and friends there, I got down
on one knee right in front of Jaime
and the ―injured‖ Roxanne. Jaime
looked at me like I was crazy until
Roxanne let go of her and miracu-
lously recovered. I know I said some-
thing. Hopefully it was the words I
had carefully planned out especially
for that day. In all likelihood it
sounded more like the drive through
at McDonalds.
All I remember after that is what
seemed like a half hour on my knee
with silence all around until I finally
heard the single word I had been
waiting for. ―Yes.‖ The place erupted
and from what I understand, a few
rings actually stopped judging to see
what was going on. I think I saw a
hint of a tear in Jaime’s eye at that
moment. We exited the ring to our
family and friends and in the midst
of it, I guess I forgot that I had to go
back in as I went select bitch. Thank
you to the ring steward for her per-
sistent calling of me, or I would have
just walked back to our setup.
We followed with a get together back
at the Markley’s motor home where
more of our friends and family con-
gregated and then it was off to
Berner’s. The show must go on. Spe-
cial thanks to everyone there for
making the day perfect.

lash was the first dog that I did a
draft trial with. When I started him
on the cart he was somewhat afraid
of it. Because of that I spent lots of
time with him and the cart. I taught
him how to turn very tight turns as
he needed to understand the cart in
all ways to be 100% comfortable.
He can do a turn on the haunches and just turn the cart around him.
Made the weaves and turns on course feel very confident for us both.
Flash is low key guy and I don't have as much obedience on him as I
do Annie. Because of his lack of obedience I wasn't as confident in
the basic control part of the test. Not because I was worried he would
run off but because I wasn't sure how well he would show a fast pace.
That is exactly what he failed the second day when we were doing the
open control. Flash had a cyst removed from his back so he wasn't
able to compete this time.
Annie, for a young dog, I have spent some time doing obedience with
her so I was quite confident in the control test with her. She on the
other hand has hardly had a cart on. I feel in some ways I took advan-
tage of her complete trust in me. I could feel she wasn't totally com-
fortable with certain parts of the carting. What training she has had
with the cart has all been with lots of food rewards. I hadn't taken
away the treats in my training because she wasn't trained enough. Yet
I asked her to do the whole test with no treats. She did it for her nov-
ice title but not in Annie fashion. So what I take from both experi-
ences is that to walk in the ring and feel confident that you can suc-
ceed you need to have spent plenty of time training with and with out
a cart. I admire Huck for all the training he has put into Chuckie and
as he said to me he could walk in the ring 10 times in one day with
Chuckie and pass all ten times. That is a dog that has had plenty of
training to give Huck that confidence. When I compare it to agility I
don't ever show one of my dogs until every piece of equipment is
proofed and really trained at the highest level. So, for the spring trials,
Annie needs lots more time in the cart and Flash needs more obedi-
ence. There are no short cuts in carting just as there are no short cuts
in agility.

Soullie was the only dog to qualify in Obedience Novice A and
took first place winning the perpetual Trophy, (a big Swissy bell).
She participated in Team Obedience with Sprite, Sophia and
Chuckie and took 1st place - of course we were the only team to
compete. Soullie did do a down on recall and we had never even
practiced that – awesome. She was on Team Rally with Kenzie,
Chuckie and Sophia and they took 1st place out of 3 teams. Soul-
lie also took 1st place in Futurity in the 15 months and older
class. Then Soullie made the cut in the big breed ring. Out of 21
bitches she made it down to 8. The biggest feat that week was
that Soullie pulled 925lbs to get her first leg in weight pull. She
earned a second place spot for the under 89lb Swissy’s, only losing to the first place spot on a slightly
slower time. I cannot tell you how proud I am of this Shadetree girl. Thanks to Grandma’s Cathy Cooper
and Mary Beth Usery.
At the National Specialty, Kenzie Westenmeyer pulled 1,465 lbs on her first ever pull (more than a lot of
the big boys) and she is a small girl of only 92 lbs, earning her first leg towards her 15x title and getting 3rd
place in her weight category. She also won her rally novice A class against 6 other dogs.
Chuckie’s National Specialty: 2nd Place Senior Obedience, 1st Place Brace Obedience, 1st Place Team Obe-
dience, 1st Place Advance Rally Pairs, 1st Place Team Rally, 1st Place Rally Excellent, 1st Place Rally Ad-
vance (RAE leg 11), Best Veteran in possibly the largest veteran class ever (17 dogs & bitches) at a

Just wanted to give a heads up on the 2 new members of my family - am fos-
tering them at this point, but they have already kleptoed my heart. Honey is
the female, and Sweetheart is the fluffy (we don't use the "f" word in this
house) one. Have only had them a few days but they've liked the Skadberg spa
amenities: massages, herbal baths, acupressure and energy healings. Not to
mention a clean diet.
The dogs came into rescue and other than knowing they were puppymill dogs
that didn't have any papers, I don't know anything more about them. What I
can tell you is they have huge hearts that have stolen mine already. Had gotten
2 other Swissies from rescue in the past that I ended up adopting and neither
of those boys came to me with such open hearts. I could not have asked for a
more wonderful Thanksgiving gift than them.
