On Common GroundThis exhibition is a continuation of Simon Burch’s work concerning the Irish landscape. The large scale photographic prints show two aspects of man and nature’s interaction, abandoned woodland and the scorched earth of gorse fires. As land use intensifies these intimate and personal views offer a reflective counterbalance to the preconceived notions of landscape.

Simon Burch is a photographer based in Dublin. Originally from Northern Ireland he worked in London for 8 years, moving to Dublin in 1996 to establish a studio. His work practise is divided between assigned and Fine Art work, and this exhibition is a continuation of his previous project ‘Under a Grey Sky’, concerning the Irish landscape.

These large scale photographic prints explore pockets of land in different states of cycle, and can be seen as indicators of a broader record of evolving interaction with Irish landscape.

Simon Burch has won International awards, and his work is held in collections in Ireland and abroad. He has been commissioned by Time Magazine, his work has appeared in the New Yorker, and has twice been an invited artist to the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Show.

Winter ShowThe exhibition will feature a cross section of emerging and established artists and craft makers presenting painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation, mixed media work, craft and applied artwork. All works will be for sale.

Previously, open call exhibitions have taken place during summer months, but this year we’re hoping to bring some sparkle to the winter months. As well as offering contemporary art and craft in a wonderful space, it is also an opportunity to pick up a unique gift just in time for Christmas!

All works submitted for exhibition are considered by a selection panel and this year we are delighted to confirm both Ann Mulrooney (Curator, National Craft Gallery) and Hilary Murray (Curator, Collections at Irish Museum of Modern Art) as guest panellists.

Exhibitors at previous RUA RED exhibitions include: Sheila Gorman, Sean Campbell, Alice Peillon, Niamh Mulligan, Alan Ardiff, Jane Fogarty, Paul Hickey and Lina Peterson amongst others.

Home NarrativesHome Narratives is an exhibition of two main bodies of photographic work from the artist Emer Gillespie.

Two Homes is a project that gives candid insight into an alternative domestic partnership, challenging the notion of a traditional nuclear family as the only viable option in today’s society. By using comparative diptychs of seemingly mundane subjects, the viewer is encouraged to consider the ‘family’ in the context of the artist’s child’s two homes.

Picture you, Picture me is a explorative and collaborative portrait with the artist’s daughter. Directing each other through role-play and instructions, the camera becomes an instrument of amusement and their photo shoots become play sessions. Exploring topics such as child autonomy and the relationship between subject and photographer it allows the viewer a

personal view into this mother/ daughter relationship. Photography, by its nature, only shows the surface of what are complex relationships and subjective realities. The family is perpetually evolving, an entity in which relationships grow and shrink, strengthen and dissipate. As a participant-observer, these images are an examination of appearance and existence, through the visual exploration of the artist’s family.

ConstellationConstellation is an exhibition of multi-media paintings by Alice Peillon.

Peillon returns this year to RUA RED with Constellation after she exhibited in our Summer Show 2010 and was chosen as the winner of a solo show in Gallery 2.

The starting point for Peillon’s work is often a random paint mark, an unexpected visual glitch. The composition of the pieces is built up in layers using the interplay of materials to develop a dynamic visual language.

The materials often act against one another - ink being subsumed by bleach, oil paint eroded by sandpaper, paint rubbed out and reinstated.

Peillon’s energetic, frenetic brushwork creates dramatic sweeps across the canvas and combined with more

deliberately structural elements, explores the interplay between precision and accident.

Peillon has a number of works in collections including the Office of Public Works (Dublin), Axa Collection of Irish Art,, Ernst & Young (London) and various private collections.

The Adjustment BureauDo we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us?

On the brink of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate, ambitious politician David Norris (Matt Damon) meets beautiful contemporary ballet dancer Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt) - a woman like none he’s ever known. But just as he realizes he’s falling for her, mysterious men conspire to keep the two apart.

David learns he is up against the agents of Fate itself - the men of The Adjustment Bureau - who will do everything in their considerable power to prevent David and Elise from being together. In the face of overwhelming odds, he must either let her go and accept a predetermined path...or risk everything to defy Fate and be with the only woman he’s ever loved.

Over 55’s Film ScreeningsRUA RED’s Over 55’s film screenings take place on the last Tuesday of every month and show the best in cinema from around the world.

The screenings takes place in our intimate Performance space giving you a unique and comfortable viewing experience.

This season we are bringing you two recent contrasting films. The Adjustment Bureau is a pacey thriller gauranteed to get you think-ing and Potiche is a stylish comedy packed with lots of quirky moments and colourful character.

We then round off the season by giving you, the audience, the opportunity to choose the Decemeber film. See page 10 for more info on how to make your suggestions or cast your vote!

As usual after every screening we offer you a choice of tea or coffee in the cafe and an opportunity to discuss the film.

PoticheNorth of France, Sainte-Gudule, 1977. Suzanne is the submissive, housebound wife of wealthy industrialist Robert Pujol, who oversees his umbrella factory with an iron fist and is equally tyrannical with his children and ‘trophy housewife’.

When the workers go on strike and take Robert hostage, Suzanne steps in to manage the factory. To everyone’s surprise, she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. But when Robert returns from a restful cruise in top form, things get complicated.

Potiche is a bright, quirky and often hilarious drawing room comedy - perfect to brighten up the dark mornings!

The Karate KidA remake of the 1984 film of the same name well exceeds expectations, delivering a powerful viewing experience filled with action-packed martial arts scenes!

12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease.

With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Whale RiderOn the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale.

From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea’s direct descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief.

But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny.

A contemporary story of love, rejection and triumph as a young Maori girl fights to fulfill a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognize.

The Muppets Christmas CarolTo get in the Christmas spirit, we are screening The Muppets Christmas Carol, not once, but twice in one day!

In this adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’, the story is narrated by Charles Dickens himself (Gonzo the Great) with the occasional commentary of Rizzo the Rat.

It is Christmas Eve in 19th century London. The merriment is not shared by Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine), a surly money-lender who is more interested in profit than celebration. So cold to the sea-son of giving is he that his book-keeping staff, including loyal employee Bob Cratchit (Kermit the Frog), has to plead with him just to have the day off work during Christmas!

Later that evening, Scrooge finds himself face to face with the still mean-spirited ghosts of his former business partners, Jacob and Robert Marley (Statler and Waldorf) who have been condemned to shackles in the afterlife as payment for the horrible deeds they committed in life. Nonetheless, they warn him that he will share the same fate, only worse, if he doesn’t change his ways, and foretell the coming of three spirits throughout the night.

Will the visits from the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future be able to show him enough to encourage Scrooge to change his ways?Or will he continue to spread his gloom and misery over others and face a terrible afterlife?

Join us for this magical Christmas tale with fantastic songs, music and comedy from your favourite muppets including Miss Piggy, Beaker, Swedish Chef and Fozzie Bear!

An excellent film experience suitable for all of the family.
