    Karamachand Gandhi also referred as

'Gandhiji' was an iconic figure in India and

around the globe for his unique practices of

non-violence or ahimsa. He believed in the

power of non-violence and in the philosophy

of truth known as "Satyagraha" and adopted

    Bakrid : Monday Oct 6 , 2014

Maharshi Valmiki, the author of the great Indianepic Ramayana , was a Hindu sage who livedaround the beginning of the first millennium . Heis referred to as the 'adikavi', the original creatorof the Hindu 'sloka' - a verse form in which mostof the great epics such as Ramayana,Mahabharata, Puranas , and other works arecomposed. In order to honour his unparalleled contribution

in the form of timeless epic Ramayana,Valmikis

birth anniverisary is celebrated as ValmikiJayanti. This day is to remember the great saintwho rose above his limitations and through histeachings encouraged people to stand againstsocial injustice and to remember a man whopersonifies benevolence and penance.

There are various festivals in the Muslimcalendar. But Bakriid or Id-ul-Zuha is one ofthe most celebrated festivals amongMuslims all over the world. It is a day ofsacrifice for the Muslims. According tolegends. It all started with a dream in whichAllah directed the patriarch Prophet Ibrahim

to sacrifice his son Ismail. It was Ibrahim'sfaith in Allah and his son's faith in his fatherthat were on test. Before performing thesacrifice Ismail tied a cloth around hisfather's eyes. But when Ibrahim opened hiseyes he found his son safe and sound. Inhis place lay a dead dumba or ram. It is inhonour of this test of faith that Muslimsaround the world sacrifice an animal on theoccasion of Id-ul-azha to show theirallegiance, faith and sincerity towards Allah. In India the Muslims mainly sacrifice the

goat, which is why the occasion is spokenof in Urdu as Bakhr or Bakri-Id. The festivalis to celebrate the strong faith of thosedevoted to Islam.
