The Bromfords School

Dear Students, Parents and Carers

The first half of this term has been extremely busy and incredibly rewarding. Having already started

our new academic year in June, Years 8 through to Sixth Form, returned from the summer break and

hit the ground running. Our new Year 7 have also become fully involved in life at The Bromfords

School, going on a day trip to Danbury earlier this month. It has been a real pleasure to work with

students as they se*le into their new form groups and make new friends.

It has also been terrific to meet so many prospec+ve students and their parents at Open Evening and

on tours around the school. This year we have con+nued tours right up to the end of half term just to

cope with the demand. Feedback from visitors has con+nued to be terrific, with a stream of posi+ve

comments and praise for our students and for their experiences whilst visi+ng the school. Par+cular

focus has been on how fantas+c our students have presented themselves, their respec.ul manner and

the applica+on to their learning that has been seen around the school. Congratula+ons to all for

making Bromfords School the successful school it is.

I am certain the next half term will be equally as busy. We have a number of school events coming up

including; drama produc+ons for and involving students, visits to university, progress review mee+ngs,

district cross country, Clothes Show trip, seasonal pantomime and celebra+ons and THE High Flyers

Extravaganza, all happening this term. I look forward to seeing you at these events.

My best wishes for a res.ul half term break.

A huge congratulations to Hilltop who gained 1st place And Grange who gained 2nd place. Both qualified for the Partnership Final at William De Ferrers on 16th October 2012. “All the best guys”. A FTER SCHOOL CLUBS Out of school hours clubs are a vital extra part to life at Bromfords and we would

encourage students to get involved in at least one after school club. Please refer to the timetable at the reverse of this newsletter to see which clubs are run, including PE Fixtures, and speak to the teacher who runs it if you need more information.

L ANGUAGES WEEK During the week beginning Monday, 24th September, the Languages Department celebrated the gift that makes humans unique from other animals – language. Assemblies throughout the week focussed on the ability

that we have as humans to learn a language from birth and to then learn other languages should we choose to do so. In assembly, students were shown a video of a range of celebrities attempting to speak another language.

A display outside the Main Hall showed the positive opinions that celebrities have about language learning. As well as this, a display was put up in the Languages Department showing which languages other teachers in the school speak.

A blind food tasting event at lunch time on Wednesday, 26th September was very successful. Students were blind-folded and given tasters of food from a selection of different countries. They had to guess what food they were given and where it was from.

The languages team supplied form tutors with a Languages Quiz to use in form time and also ran a competition for students to write a poem or song in French, Italian, German or Spanish. Any outstanding entries should be given to Miss Bright as soon as possible. Thank you.

B ROMFORDS SCHOOL IN THE NEWS Congratulations to Year 10 student, Scarlett Anderson who finally received the news she has been waiting for. It is now official that she has been chosen to crew for the Cadet

National Champion, Nick Sutton, at the Cadet World Sailing Championships in Sandy Bay, Hobart in Tasmania this December. This is an amazing opportunity for her as it is expected that 15 countries will take part in the event. We are very excited and proud of Scarlett who, well deservedly, will be part of the GB Team of 9 boats. Good luck Scarlett!!

D UKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a nationally recognised award for young people aged between 14 and 25 and encourages them to develop their skills in 4 sections. They will need to learn a new

skill, improve themselves in a sporting activity, undertake some volunteering and finally take part in an overnight camping expedition.

After half term we will be setting up the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in school and are looking for support from parents who may be willing to help with the scheme. It may be that you can provide us with contacts to offer opportunities to our students or are willing to give up some time to help develop their skills. You may have a qualification that enables you to lead expeditions or have another way that you feel you may be of help in delivering the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

If you are interested in helping with this or require more information please contact

Mr Marshall at the school.

YEAR 7 HOUSE REPS

B ROMFORDS SCHOOL HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES Some exciting changes will be happening to our current House System. This year I have enlisted the support of our amazing students

to fulfil roles and take on responsibility. Each student appointed completed a successful application listing their qualities and how they can support the house systems; the competition was tough due to the high level of applications submitted. Keep watching this space to see how they raise the profile of the Bromfords House system.
