During challenging times, Companies that continue to be aggressive during economic downturns outperform non-spenders after the recovery. In studies, it was shown that companies that continued to spend during recessions experience revenue growth of 275% during the first full year of recovery,

whereas companies that cut back only experienced 19%. (McGraw-Hill Study).

In fact, an analysis of the 1990 - 91 recession showed that firms maintaining strong marketing efforts take business away from less aggressive competitors and position themselves for growth once recovery occurs. (Penton Research Service,

Happy Halloween

Let me be perfectly honest, Halloween is my favorite Holiday. I like it better than

Christmas and Thanksgiving combined. Halloween has had a

special place in my heart since the very first time I put on a witch costume. There I was, four years old,

dressed in a long black dress, smothered in green make-up and carrying an old, broken broomstick. I was surrounded by ghouls, goblins and the occasional super hero. I was in my element. Every year at this time I start visiting Halloween stores, planning out my costume and buying decorations. By the time Halloween arrives my house will be plastered with skeletons, pumpkins, candles and lots of fall foliage. I can’t wait! This is also the time of year I get asked over and over again, “Why do you like Halloween so much?” So in order for me to explain to the people that have obviously lost their Scary Spirit, I have made a list of reason as to why you should embrace this wonderful holiday:

Free CandyLet’s be serious. Who doesn’t love candy? Even if you’re not a fan, you can

still get gobs of it for free and give it to people you know who love it. If my years in corporate America have taught me anything, it’s this: people love free food.

Horror Movie PartiesEvery year, you get a one-week period where it’s perfectly acceptable for a group of mature grownups to sit around a television and watch villains stalk and kill large numbers of people. Typically, cheesy scary movies are required to truly have a good time. I recommend Friday The 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street.

CostumesThis is a true pleasure. I love to see what kind of creative costumes come out every year. From sexy witches, bloody ghouls and clever got to think for a minute costumes. And what about the littlest goblins, I mean who doesn’t love a 3 year old bumblebee? There’s nothing like a fresh batch of toddlers trick-or-treating to make you feel warm and fuzzy

Halloween StoresI love shopping. I like spending hours looking at costumes, pimp jewelry, magic wands and glittery tutus.

Acceptance of GoreThis is the only time of year you can openly applaud a friend that takes the time to create fake intestines for an outfit. I mean this is the only time of year you can say…“Hey guys, did you see my new exposed liver I paired with my Prada?”

Happy Halloween!

After listening to all the hype, I finally broke down and got myself an iPhone 4. For those of you who know me, you know I tend to fight all these social networking and text messaging trends. I have to admit I do enjoy my new phone and all the features. But, I have also been observing some not so great dynamics developing in our personal and business relationships. So, it should come as no surprise when I tell you the theme of this month is GET A GRIP, PEOPLE!

1. Do NOT try to book your appointment by text message. Come on! Do you really think that during a busy day at work your hair stylist has the time to put down the shears, take hands out of the sink & dry them off, or take of gloves covered in color, and stand there for 15 minutes texting back and forth about when you can & can’t come in for an appointment?! Of course not, and would you want a stylist who did that while YOU were in their chair? Seriously people, do not be offended if you cannot book or reschedule by text message. Please have the courtesy to pick up your phone & use your voice to schedule an appointment; this is why we have assistants. Common sense dictates that texts are responded to at the end of the day, so that doesn’t leave many spots open for you to choose from. I

think this goes for other business relationships other than salons. If

you text or email everything, stop and think about it; not everyone is hooked to their laptop or phone as if it were a life support system. You

will save a lot of aggravation on both ends.

2. We all use our social networking sites of choice for different reasons. Please don’t

assume your view as everyone else’s. By this I mean, if you are one of those who accepts every request you get because they look vaguely familiar, more power to ya, but please don’t be offended when others don’t share your, ummm, enthusiasm for online socializing. Shocking as it may be, some people don’t want everyone and their dog on their pages. They may just share their lives with a select few people. Don’t take offense if every person you have ever been in contact with, professionally, or personally doesn’t accept you as a friend. Jeez, give people a break, you aren’t entitled to everyone’s page just because you bust onto the social networking scene. Maybe they only have a facebook to network, or just the opposite. Maybe they only have one for friends, or past friends who live out of town. Or they know who your friends or relatives are on your page and don’t care to have their personal life broadcast in that circle of people. There are a million reasons I could list, but point is, please try not to let it reflect in your real life, person-to person relationships. It is still quality over quantity of friends, even in cyber world!

3. And before you get your panties up in a bunch over a text message from your friend or family member; take a deep breath, and RE-READ IT! Maybe it

was meant for the person below your name in their phone. Or maybe you are taking it out of context or putting your own spin on how they meant it. Ya know, some use exclamation marks for excitement or anger, you might have actually taken it differently than it was intended. When in doubt, please use some freakin’ common sense and call the person!! If they can’t talk at the moment, take a deep breath and remember this old fashioned concept: THEY CAN CALL YOU BACK LATER.

4. If you friend someone’s personal page, who you only know professionally, don’t be surprised if they seem a bit different when they are on their own time. Come on!! We all know we have our professional, work “self”. Our friend “self”, and even our family or in-law “self”. For example, you friend your stylist’s personal page, whom you get along with really well during your hair appointment, but don’t see a lot of other than that. When they post an opinion on, oh let’s say politics, that pisses you off, or you (shockingly) don’t agree with, don’t take it personally. Obviously, there are topics that are avoided in salons that are fair game on their personal sites. If it is not some horrid moral flaw that you simply cannot overlook, simply IGNORE it and resume client/stylist relationship as usual.

Please don’t take yourself so seriously that you let your media social life take over your real, human connections & social life!

Trick or Treat!!! Halloween is here and with that there are two

things that are on most people’s to-do lists: get a costume and check

out some haunted houses. Fortunately on our historic old Rt. 66, you

can do both within a block of each other, between Western and

Georgia on 6th St.

Amarillo’s well known Rt. 66 Costume Castle carries a huge selection

of costumes for any occasion, with their busiest season being that of

Halloween. Costume Castle has or can obtain virtually any costume

you may be craving for that Halloween party or to sport at one of the

local nightspots for the upcoming haunted weekend. Costumes

range from the basics of just clothing or masks to some of the

highest quality Halloween costumes that may have people

wondering if you picked it up in Hollywood!!!

After visiting the Costume Castle for your Halloween attire, make

plans to check out 6th Street Massacre, about 1 block west of

Costume Castle. The heavily upgraded 6th Street Massacre has even

more terror, fright, and fun than last year, boasting a mirror maze

that may have you lost for awhile as well as a room that is sure to

make you wonder if the ground is still where it should be. In

addition, the Pampa Paranormal Research Society will be giving

haunted tours every Sunday through Oct., as the old movie theater

that is home of 6th Street Massacre is rumored to actually be

haunted!!!

In addition, 6th St. will also be hosting their annual 6th St. Creepy

Crawl on Halloween, THE party to be on Halloween night!!! All

proceeds will beneit the Amarillo SPCA.

So, come down to old Rt. 66, pick up your costume, hit Amarillo’s

best haunted house, and party up your Halloween with the Creepy

Crawl, all in one place.

Have a happy and safe Halloween!!!

Christmas came early for the U.K. music biz as Annie Lennox made an impromptu performance at the launch of her new holiday album. Lennox launched her "Christmas Cornucopia" album, her first for Universal after spending most of her career with Sony, with a festive-themed playback at MusicRoom in London. The room was decked with Christmas trees and candy canes, and mince pies were served as industry and media got a first listen to Lennox's interpretations of Yuletide standards including "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "The First Noel," "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Silent Night." But Lennox ditched the Christmas theme when BBC Radio 2 DJ Ken Bruce introduced her live set, which included Eurythmics hits "There Must Be an Angel (Playing With My Heart)," "Here Comes the Rain Again" and "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" as well as her solo songs "No More 'I Love You's" and "Little Bird." "I know it's surreal listening to Christmas songs in September," she said. "But I've been feeling surreal all year, because I've been singing these songs since October last year." "The old woman rarely sings live these days," quipped Lennox, "But tonight is like an intimate evening in my living room." The album, her first since 2007's "Songs of Mass Destruction" - which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 in the U.K. - is due Nov. 15 in the United Kingdom on Island Records and a day later in the United States on Decca. As well as 11 Christmas standards, the album contains a new Lennox composition, "Universal Child," which will be the lead single from the album. The star is donating all her royalties from the track to her HIV/AIDS charity the Annie Lennox Foundation. The record features contributions from South Africa's African Children's Choir on several tracks, with a strong African feel to some of the Christmas songs.

So much has been told about the Beatles that director Michael Epstein knew he needed to say something different in his documentary of John Lennon. The film, "LENNONYC," recounts the ex-Beatle's decade in the United States as the tale of an immigrant coming to America and the importance of New York City to the musician and his wife, Yoko Ono. Using previously unreleased audio tapes and outtakes made during studio recording sessions, the movie traces Lennon's life from his move to Greenwich Village in 1971 to his murder outside his Upper West Side apartment building in 1980. For Lennon, New York offered an escape from Britain, where he felt the media was harsh to him and to Ono, the movie recounts. New York gave him the freedom to live a more ordinary life, able to dine out or walk in his beloved Central Park without being hassled by fans or press. The documentary traces Lennon's anti-war activism, efforts by the U.S. government to deport him, the release of his albums "Mind Games" and "Double Fantasy" and his famed "lost weekend" when he left home and fell into heavy, destructive drinking. The audio tapes provide some of the lightest

and most moving moments in the film, with Lennon placing a takeout order for sushi and listening to his young son Sean singing lyrics from the Beatles' hit "With a Little Help for My Friends." Lennon eventually found peace when he left the music scene to raise his son, Epstein said. "It's in that quiet, domestic place where he builds his own family, that he finds his redemption," he said.

"LENNONYC" was produced in part by the public television series American Masters and is scheduled to be shown on PBS stations on November 22. It will be shown in Central Park as well, in a free public screening on October 9, which would have been Lennon's 70th birthday. Interviewed on film are Ono, members of the Elephant's Memory band that played with Lennon and Ono, musician Elton John, talk show host Dick Cavett and photographer Bob Gruen, who took some of the most iconic pictures of Lennon. There are no interviews with surviving Beatles Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr, nor with Lennon's sons Julian or Sean. Interviews such as one with McCartney would have tilted the film toward the relationship between Lennon and McCartney, Epstein said, adding, "I wanted this to be about John."

Every time country star Toby Keith puts out a new album, he braces himself to spend a few days living a bizarre, sped-up Groundhog Day-like existence.

"I get up and sit in a room and start doing interviews for country morning shows all across the country," he says. "They are four minutes each, and most of the time it's the same questions over and over. Then I eat lunch, do satellite radio shows in the afternoon, then all the drive-time shows. And then I wake up and do it all over again."

His new album, "Bullets in the Gun," will be out Oct. 5 on Keith's own Show Dog/Universal label. (Show Dog is also home to Joe Nichols and Trace Adkins, among others.) The first single, "Trailerhood," is No. 19 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. Keith's previous album, 2009's "American Ride," has sold 406,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan; his best-selling effort, 2003's "Shock'N Y'all," sold 4.4 million. "I'm in a great place right now," says Keith, 39. "I probably wrote 40 or 50 songs in the last year and the songs are getting more and more happy. I did some movies, too, but now I'm just kicking back." But Keith's version of kicking back doesn't involve hanging out with a good book and a beer. He's currently on tour and proving he can still rile up his fan base, noting that there were 42 arrests at a recent concert. Keith says he'll keep touring through the fall, and even though his new album hasn't yet been released, fans are anxious to hear new material.

While the album will contain a mix of originals about the joys of hanging out, drinking beer and true romance (one track includes the phase "totally flirtable"), Keith is also including four live covers of country classics on some special editions, which were recorded live at a secret show in New York.

Things You’ll Need:A quarter Table or flat surface Booze!

Setting Up the Game:No set up! Just have your friends sitting around a table and a quarter in your hand.

Playing the Game:Whoever has their birthday closes to Halloween spins first. We’ll call them the spinner. The spinner holds the quarter upright on the table with a finger. With their other hand, they flick the quarter to make it spin. While the coin is spinning, the spinner slams their hand down on the quarter, picks a different

player (the guesser) and asks "Head or Tails?"

If the guesser guesses correctly, they get to spin the quarter next. If the guesser does not guess correctly, the spinner spins the quarter and the guesser must drink until the quarter stops spinning on its own or they finish their drink. Since the guesser was wrong, the spinner spins the quarter again, picking another player to guess heads or tails.

At any time, if the spinner spins the quarter off the table, they must finish their drink. The quarter then passes to the person on the spinner’s left and they

are the new spinner.
