Whatwevalueseemstohavebecomesomuchmoreimportantoverthisyear.I’mtakingthisopportunitytotalkaboutwhatIvalueaboutSpringDaleNeighbourhoodCentre.
IvaluethefactthatIhavebeenabletobesobusyoverthelastyear.IamsohappythatwehavebeenabletofocusoncompletingourStrategicPlanandprogressingalmosteverygoal.Ivalueandamgratefultothepeoplewhohaveworkedbesidemeastheywereable–myfamilywhobecameconscripted,staffmembersandvolunteerswhohelpedwhenconditionsallowed.Iamgratefulthatwewereabletohelpsomanytechnologicallystrandedpeoplewhoneeded,usuallysimpleassistance,whichbecameverydifficultduringaccessrestrictions.Ivaluethesincerethankswehavereceivedbysomanythatwewereabletohelp.Likesomanypeopleinourcommunityandbeyond,Ivaluethethousandsofjigsawpuzzlesthatwecurate,donatedbyourcommunityovertheyears,thisassetprovidedgreatjoytosomanyovertheyear.ThisisonlyonefacetofassetsupportthatSpringDaleprovidesthatIvaluesomuch.Aspeoplecleanedoutcupboards,Ivaluethefactthatpeopletrusteduswiththeirbooksandotheritemsthatwehavebeenabletomakeavailabletokeepotherpeoplebusyandentertained.Iamgratefulfortheopportunitytohavebeenabletoencouragepeopletotakeuponlineopportunitiesandcontinuetobepartofourclasses.IknowpeoplehavevaluedourclassesthathaverunoverZoomoverthelast8months,wecontinuetobethankedforoursupport,soIknowithasbeenvalued.Iamgratefulthatthosepeoplehavegoneontoencourageotherstogoonlineandtohelpthemtodoso–payingitforwardissoimportant.Ourtutorsadaptedandhostedhundredsofsessions,connectingwithsomanyandfacilitatingthousandsofhoursofinformation.IamsogratefulthatourtutorshelpedSpringDaletoremainoperationalevenifitwasinavirtualspace.Iamgratefulandvaluethesupportofpeoplewhohavesubscribedforourregularemailcontact.Manypeoplewouldrespondandthenumberofsubscriptionshaveskyrocketedduringthisyear.Eachextrasubscriptiongavemeaburstofenergyandgavemepermissiontokeepgoing.IhavelovedseeingourWednesdayMen’sCookingGroupmeeteveryWednesday,almostlikenormal,infrontofascreeninsteadinfrontofthestoveandvalueeverytimeoneofourgroupleadersorgroupmemberscontactedsomeoneelseandliftedtheirspirits.IamgratefultohavebeenabletohelpmanylocalgroupstouseourZoomlicensesfortheirmeetingsandsomebusinessesandevenacoupleoffamilies,evenbeingabletohelptheDrysdaleRSLSubBranchtobeabletolivestreamRemembranceDayrecently.(Althoughitcouldhavebeenbetter–wedidoutsidestreaming).IamgratefulthatwestartedtheHerbstoHelpprojectinFebruarythisyear.TheplantsthatIhavehadtheopportunitytonurtureandtheyinturnhavegivenmegreatjoy.IntheverynearfuturewewilltransportthemtoBruthenandneighbouringvillages.Iamsogratefultohavehadthisopportunity.Sogratefultoallthethosewhohavesofreelygivenoftheirtime,expertiseanddonationofseedlingsandcuttings.BythetimeyoureadthisourplantswillhavenewhomesinEastGippsland.IvaluethesupporttheSpringDaleCommitteehasgivenmeandourcommunity.AsthenumberofvolunteershelpinginoperationalwaysatSpringDalereducedsignificantly,theCommitteesteppedforwardtohelpinsomanywaysandcontinuetosupportandinspireus.Iespeciallyvaluetheopportunitytopublishthemostpositivemagazinemonthly.Iamsogladthatwehavebeenabletocontinuetodothiswithouthesitationandinthemostpositivewaythatwecould.Ilookforwardtothefutureandhopetomeetthechallengesthatmaycomenext.Thewordsweareopenhavebecomesospecial.IamsogratefulforallthesupportthatIreceivedaily–IlovewhatSpringDaleenablesmetobeabletodoandalsovaluethesupportofmyfamilywhohavebeenwithmeeverystepoftheway.Thankyouthankyouthankyou.YourssincerelyAnneBrackleyforTeamSpringDale

Sincewritinglastmonth,IamextremelypleasedtonotethattheStatescoronaviruscasenumbershavesignificantlydropped,particularlyinmetropolitanMelbourne.Thisisofcoursegoodnewsforeveryone,especiallylocallywhereatthetimeofwriting(29October)therewerenorecordedcasesintheGreaterGeelongregion,includinghereontheBellarinePeninsula.IthankandcongratulateallBellarineresidentsfortheirongoingcommitmentandeffortinfightingthisvirus.Itisnowhearteningtoseeourlocalcafesandrestaurantsreopened,albeitwithnumberrestrictions,andregionaltouristsstayingovernightinlocalaccommodationtoenjoyallthepeninsulahastooffer.IndicationsarethatifmetropolitanMelbournenumbersremainlowwewillsoonseetheirtravelrestrictionslifted.Iknowthiswillbewelcomenewsforourmanycafes,restaurantsandaccommodationproviders.Allgoingwell,itwillmeansmallbusinessescanlookforwardtothecomingsummermonths.Fromacommunitysportperspective,itisterrifictoseeoursummersportseasonscommencing.TheBellarinePeninsulaCricketAssociation

Funding for Men’s Sheds StateGovernmentGrantsof$2,300arenowavailableforthoseMen’sShedswhichmaybestrugglingafterbeingunabletofundraiseoverrecentmonths.Thefundingisdesignedtoassisttheshedsinmeetinganyurgentexpensestheymayhavesotheycanreopenasstrongcommunityorganisations.Men’sShedsplayanimportantroleinprovidingsafeplacesformentocometogether,utiliseandteachskillssuchaswoodwork,andindoingsoimprovethehealthandwell-beingoftheirmembers.TheBellarineisblessedtohaveseveralMen’sSheds,allanimportantpartoftheirlocalcommunitiesandIthankandcongratulatethemontheirimportantwork.Thesegrantscloseonthe30thofNovemberandmoredetailscanbefoundat:providers.dhhs.vic.gov.au/mens-shed-programorcontactmyoffice.
Community Road Safety Grants AvailableRoadsafetygrantsofupto$30,000arealsonowopentolocalcommunityorganisationsandschoolsthroughtheTransportAccidentCommission.TheTACsCommunityRoadSafetyGrantsaretargetedtohelpnotforprofitorganisationsandschoolstodevelopeffectiveprojects

newandbetterfuture,andhowthatmighthappen.I’venoticedanincreaseinawarenessoftheplightofolderwomenwhoarereallybattlingtoexistonasinglepensionorjobseekerpayment.It’sbeenawelcomereliefandoneofthepositivethingstocomeoutofCOVIDthatJobseekerwasincreasedforatimeandgovernmentsarebeginningtoseetheneedtorevisitthoseamountsforthelong-term.
I’vealsobeenencouragedbytheworkthat’sbeingdonebyourCityCouncil,DeakinUniversity,Communityorganisationsandevenbusinesseswhohavebecomeawareofthehomelessnessissuein
ourareaandworkingtowardsotherviablehousingoptionsforsinglepeoplewhoneedaffordable,safe,comfortableandpermanenthomesinwhichtoenjoytheirsenioryears.Ageing“inplace”–wheretheychoosetobeamongstwhatisfamiliarandvaluedtothemandbeing
abletobuildasenseofcommunityandbelongingissoimportantforallofus,notjusttheaged.
IthinktherearepositiveandencouragingthingsonthehorizonfortheBellarineandGeelongArea,andthereisasenseofhopeandgoodwill,

Wellwheredid2020go,itseemslikeitwasonlyyesterdaythatIwaswritingarticlefortheFebruaryissueoftheMessenger.ThisyearweasVictorianshavecertainlybeenthroughsomuch,withnotonewaveofCOVID19buttwo.Covid19hascertainlytestedustothelimit-butwewillsurvive,asVictoriansalwaysdo.WhichbringsmetoSurvival-howwouldyousurviveifyouwereaskedtocarefulltimeforyoungfamilymembers.Ihaverecentlysupportedtwoseniorcitizens,(bothontheagedpension)whowereaskedtocarefulltimefortheirthreegrandchildren.Sosurvivalmodesetin-howdowecope,whydidthishappenandwhatcomesnext?Thesegrandparentswereworriedtheywouldnotsurvivethemanychallengesfacingthem.Theywereworriedhowtheywouldsurviveonjusttheagedpensionforanewfamilyof5.That'swhereIamabletohelpandsupportfromthegroupisenormous.IcontactedCentrelinkorganizedpaymentsforthechildrenplusalittlebackpay,aswellI(withthegrandparent’spermission)advocatedwithDHHStourgentlystartpaymentsforthechildren.Thenwewereabletoorganiseneededclothes,toys,booksandgamesforthethreechildren,plusbedding.Thenwecontactthelocalfoodreliefcentres,
whoalwayshelpsusout.ThesegrandparentssurvivedandIamsopleasedtoreportthateverythingisgoingwellforthisfamily.SoVictoriansholdyourheaduphighbecausewesurvivedtwowavesofCOVID19.Welldone.OnthatnoteIwouldliketothankthemanywonderfulpeoplewhohavedonatedsomuchtousasKinshipCarers.RecentlyIpickedsomebeautifulhandmadehandbagsfromSpringDale-whichweregivenouttocarerswithin24hrs.Thankyoutothewonderfulpersonwhomadetheseawesomehandbags.Jeanette Hanley Heath-0414308257

UsuallyifyouaredrawntoababbleofnoiseinyourgardenitiswhatmanyfriendsandIcall‘thebullyboys’.Thisisamisleadingcommentasitisusuallybothboysandgirlstakingpartintheactivity,loudlyandconstantlybickeringandarguingaboutlittleornothing.WhoamItalkingabout?Whatisthenameofthesewell-knownlarrikins?TheyareknownasNewHollandHoneyeatersandcanbefoundinthesoutheastandsouthwestofAustralia,notforgettingTasmania.Thebirdsarecertainlynotshyandoftenyouseeaboldandinquisitiveindividualsittinghighonthetwig,wellexposedtoall,curiouslysurveyingthesurroundingbushlandorgarden.Theyaredistinctiveincolouringwithdenseblackstreaksonawhitebreast,withyellowtippedwingsandtail,ablackbackand
headwithwhitecheekpatchesandaverypenetratingwhiteeye.Thesedistinctive,wellknownbirdsarecommontoourcoastalorsubcoastalgardensintheBellarineespeciallyifwegrowtheindigenousnectarproducingplantstheylove.Theirbeaksareblack,longandcurvebeautifullyenablingthemtopenetraterightintotheflowersforthedelicacytheyhavecomefor,sweetnectar.Theselittlebirdsoftenmoveasamessygroup,dartingfrombushtoshrubtotree,active,noisyandverymuchinthelimelightastheysearchhighandlowandasIsaidbefore,arguingloudlyastheytravelthegarden.Theyarealsoinclinedtofeedontheinsectsofyourgardendartinghighintotheairafteratastymorsel.WhenIdidmybirdcountinOctober’sbirdweekcountImissedtheNewHolland’snoisycontributiontoourarea.Gonewastheabrupt,metalliccallsandwhistlesandnorapidburstsofalarmcallsbrokemyconcentration.Itseemsthatournoisycompanionsmoveoneachyearandfollowthefloweringpatternsoftheplantstheylove.Butnottoworry,theywillbeback,loudlyassertingthemselvesandbringingjoytothosewhowatchoutforthem.Carole O’Neill

Cyril & Eva Deeath TheDeeathfamilymovedtoDrysdalein1956,howblessedandfortunatethecitizensofDrysdaleandwiderdistrictwouldbecome….IntheearlydaysMrsEvaDeeath(neeCant)wasaterrificinfluenceandaninspirationtomanyofthegirlsandyoungwomenofDrysdaleandintimebecameastrongcaringrespectedandintegralmemberofthewidercommunity,aGuideLeader,MarriageGuidanceCouncillorandaMarriageCelebrant.EvaCantwasborninRichmondin1921andbecameanurseattheBethesdaHospitalin1944.DuringhertimeatthehospitalshemetapatientCyrilDeeath,hewas20yearsherseniorandhadsufferedfromseriousbreakdowns.OnethingledtoanotherandCyrilandEvamarriedlaterthatyearandsetuphouseinBeaumaris.In1955CyrilwantedtomovetotheBellarinePeninsula,hewantedafarmandtobeneara“big”YachtClub.Theyfounda28-acrefarminDrysdaleandin1956startedbuildingtheirnewfarm-houseonthecornerofWhitcombe’sRoadandthePortarlington/GeelongRoad.Evahatedtheideaofmovingtothecountry,butherbrotherHarryCant,wifeMerleandchildrenhadalreadyrelocatedthere,sothatmadethingseasier.Drysdalewasadevelopingtown,howeverEvasoondiscoveredtherewas“justnothing”forherchildrentodointheirsparetime.ComingfromMelbournethechildrenwereperhapsalittleboredsoin1957Evadecidedtoestablishagirl’sgymnasiumclassandshortlyafterwardtheGirlGuidesmovementinDrysdale.HerinspirationcamefromherinvolvementwiththeSalvationArmyGuildastheyhadnumerousGirlclubsandactivitiesinMelbourne,howeverafteralotofthoughtEvafeltthebestfitforDrysdalewouldbeGirlGuidingandshewascertainlyqualified.EvabecametheDrysdaleGirlGuideLeader,recruitingMrsMerleCant,MrsMarianStonehouseandMrsBerylHickmanasherhelpers.Raynaandsomeofherschoolfriends,PamWisbey,WilmaHutchinson,JeanetteWilliamsandLynetteNicholsonbecamethefirstpatrolofDrysdaleGirlGuidesandwhatfuntheyhad.Thewomentaughtthegirls,knot-tying,craft,sewing,camping,cooking,campfiresongs,survivaltechniques.First-aidetc.MeetingswereoriginallyheldintheMethodistSundaySchool,(whichisnowSpringDale)thenahallwasbuiltbehindthenowCraftShopoppositeinthecarpark.Lateron,CyrilbecameinterestedinScoutingandstartedtheScoutmovementinDrysdale,hebecametheGroupScoutmaster–andaverygoodone.Evawasverygoodatjugglingalotofresponsibilitiesandinitiatives;beingamother,GuideLeader,afarmer’swife,milkingcows,pickingpotatoes,collectingandcleaningeggsanddrivingthetractor.CyrilhadalsopurchasedafarminDrakesRoad,sothatkeptthemverybusy.Thisisonlypartofthestorymoretofollow.

Beginnings of The Bellarine Onion Growers’ AssociationThepricesofonionshadbeenverylowformanyyears.AmeetingwasheldinDrysdaleattendedby120peoplewiththeviewtoformingaunionamongstgrowersitwasreportedasfollows."Manyfarmershadputtheironionsinpitsatthebeginningoftheseason,andtheywouldnotbequickintakingthemout,unlessthebuyerswouldpurchaseatahighfigure,seeingthatagreatquantitywouldbesuretorot.MrDaniels,inreplytoMrMcLean,statedthatthey(thebuyers)wishedthefarmerstoagreetosomeplanbywhichtheycouldfixthepriceofonions,andthedealerswouldsupport'theformerstotheutmost,buttheymustbeagreedandactasoneman,andthensuccesswouldsurelyattendtheirefforts.Hewishedthefarmerstoformaunion,andeveryonepresenttostrictlycarryouttherulesthatmightbeadopted.MrJohnHaystatedthatfarmersshouldsuggestthelinesuponwhichaunioncouldbeformed.Iftheyunitedinfiringapricebelowwhichtheywouldnotsell,thedealerswouldbuyatthatpriceprovidingitwaswithinthelimitsoffairness.MrDanielsmentioned,inreplytoMrMcLean,thatthedemandforonionsnowisquiteasgreatasatthistimelastyear,whentheywereworthfrom£5to£510sperton.Therewere,too,lessonionsabout,anditwasquiteaseasytosellfor£4pertonasfor£2,ifsomegoodmeansforregulatingthepricewereadopted.MrWm.Gray,jnr.,thoughtthatthematterofunionwasverysimpleindeed.Thebuyerssuggestedtothefarmerstheadvisabilityoffixingapricetheyarepreparedtosellat,andthebuyerspledgedthemselvestopurchaseatthatprice.
Thiswouldbeunioninitself.Mr.J.Bannisterthoughtthat£3pertonwouldbeafairpricetofixuponforthepresent,andhewouldbepreparedtobuyalargequantityatthatprice,andwouldpledgehimself,withotherdealers,tosupporttheunion(ifformed)totheutmost.Thefollowingresolutionswerethenunanimouslyadopted-1. IhavebeentoldIcouldnotenteracafébecausetheydidn’thaveroomforawheelchair–thisiscodefor‘Idon’twishtomoveanythingaround’.Itisalsoblatantdiscrimination.Soourpartyoffivetookourcustomelsewhere.Ihaverungvenuestobetoldthatitwouldbeimpossibletoaddevenaportablerampattheentrance.Andfoundtablesthatduetotheirheightandlegconfiguration,makefordifficultwheelchairmanoeuvringandanuncomfortableeatingexperience.Often,andunderstandably,disabilityconsiderationsarerarelyontheradarofthosethathavenoexperienceofit–butitdoesn’thavetoandshouldnotbethisway.Whatif,throughclevergovernmentalandbusinessco-planningincludingthosewithdisability,wecouldformulateacohesivesetofbasicfeaturesofinclusion?Whatifwehadamandatoryuniversaldesigncodewhenitcametorestaurantfit-outsincludingmenusfortheblind,tablepaymentservice(notjustthevariedandoptionalcurrentguidelines)?Whatifall

TheRotaryClubofDrysdalehasannouncedwinnersinitsinaugural2020CreativeWritingCompetitionwhichwasopentostudentsinYearsFiveandSixatlocalschools.Threeschoolssubmittedentriesinthisannualcompetition,whichDrysdaleClubtookoverfromQueenscliffeRotaryClubfollowingitsclosureearlierthisyear.ParticipatingschoolscomprisedDrysdalePrimary,StThomasPrimaryandStLeonard’sPrimary.DrysdaleRotarianjudgingpanel,ledbyclubmemberandauthorDrJuneAlexander,wereimpressedwiththestudents’enthusiasmandhighlevelofcreativewritinginayearthathasbeenmarkedandshapedbyeffectsofCOVID-19.“Interestingly,wereceivedanequalnumberofentriesfromboysandgirls,andfromGrades5and6,”Junesaid.“Thechildrenwerepresentedwithanumberofstorylines,andmostchosetoexplorethepromptwhichbeganwith‘Theeaglesatonthehighestbranchofthetree,and…..’Thestoriesrevealahighlevelofimagination,storyplotanddialogueskills,andexplorationofmorals,beliefs,empathyandpossibilities.”Inanormalyear,Rotarianswouldattendeachschoolandpresenttheawardsinperson,butwiththisnotbeingpossibleduetoCOVID-19restrictions,arrangementsweremadetohaveschoolgatepresentation.RotariansLeilaStecherandCarolineRickard,mindfulofsocialdistancingandmask-wearing,visitedtheschoolstohandovertheawardstoexcitedstudents.Themainwinnersreceiveda$100prize,runners-upreceiveda$50prizeandallentrantsreceivedaparticipationcertificateandtokenaward.Eachparticipatingschoolalsoreceiveda$50award.

ThistimelastyearIwastellingpeoplethatIwouldhave2020visionsoon!!!TheirresponsewastoaskifIwashavingcataractsurgery.UnfortunatelymyoptimismfadedwiththestartofcovidinMarchthisyear.ManyAustraliansandparticularlythoseofusinVictoriaarefeelingthepressuresoftoday,butspareathoughtforpreviousgenerationswhomusthavesufferedandfelthelplessduringthewaryears.WhenAlisonRodgersmarriedAlfButcherin1915shenotonlysawherhusband’stwobrothersgoingofftowar,butalsoherownbrothersArthurandErnest.ArthurenlistedinGeelongonMay15th1916,afterservingwiththe29thLightHorseBrigadepriortothewar.HesailedfromMelbourneinSeptemberthatyearwiththe29thInfantryBattalionaboardthetroopship‘Commonwealth”.Hewasdischargedthefollowingyearaftersufferinghandandleginjuries,butwasstillabletowalktothealterandtakethehandofEileenO’HalloranandreturntoDrysdalewheretheyraisedtheirfourchildren,Maureen(MrsConnor),Eileen(MrsNoy),MauriceandNeil(alldeceased).
ErnestalsosignedupinGeelongafterservingwiththe29thLightHorseBrigadepriortoenlisting.HeembarkedfromMelbournewithhisbrotheronSeptember19th1916,hewaswoundedinactionfourmonthslaterandafterbeingrehabilitatedwassenttoFrance,wherehewasagainwoundedonSeptember3rd1918.HereturnedtoAustraliaonChristmasEvethatyearandwasdischargedonMay12th1919.HebeganoperatingacartagecontractingbusinessbasedinDrysdaleandmarriedEstherMaherandthisiswheretheyraisedtheirthreechildren,Lester,Norma(MrsMortimer)andErnestBarry(alldeceased).Duringthedepressionofthe1930’s,AlfandAlisonbuilttheirnewhomeat32HighSt,DrysdaleandErnieandArthurbuiltat44and46respectively.Althoughlivingnextdoortooneanother,thebrothersdidnotalwaysseeeyetoeyeuntilatragedychangedthelivesofbothfamilies,onthelastdayofFebruary1953,whentheirteenageboysNeilandBarrydrownedinLakeLorneduringaduckhuntingouting.ServiceswereheldintheMethodistChurch
inHighStaswellastheCatholicChurchinWyndhamSt,andwereco-ordinatedtoallowbothcongregationstomeetatthetowncentreformorethanathousandofmournerstowalkwiththefamiliestotheDrysdalecemeteryfortheirburials.Russell Butcher
