HOLY LAND GIFTS-OLIVE WOOD CARVINGS
For Sale After Masses October 14th & 15th
Saida & George Rashmawi, volunteers from the Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem, will be
visiting on October 14/15th. They will speak to us about the Christian struggle in the Holy Land
and they also have some beautiful handmade Olive Wood carvings which are all handmade by
the Christian people over there. This is a Church mission to maintain the existence of the
Catholic people in the Holy Land. Catholic Christians were once the majority in that land but
the percentage has now dropped to less than 1.5%. Please take time to look at the carvings, make
a purchase and help this worthy cause. These carvings make great sacramental and Christmas
gifts that have an added special significance.

Our Lady of Fatima
The Rosary will be prayed immediately
following the 7:30 am Mass on Friday,
Oct. 13. This is the 100th anniversary
of the last appearance of the Blessed
Virgin Mary to the children of Fatima.
It also commemorates the miracle of
the sun. Please join us as we pray for peace in the
world.
October 12 (Thurs.) Ladies’ Hour of Prayer:
The ladies of Holy Spirit will join together in the
church for their monthly hour of prayer at 10:30
a.m. Please join us as we pray for the sick of our
parish and for the needs of our parishioners. Bunny
Nagle will lead our prayer service this month. Fol-
lowing our time of prayer, those whose schedules
permit, will join together for lunch. Again, please
consider joining the ladies for this special time of
prayer, reflection, and companionship.
St. Teresa Mothers' Group
The St. Teresa Mothers' Group
meets weekly on Wednesdays
at 9:30 AM in the parish library. Our goal is to pro-
vide prayer, study, service, and community for
mothers at all stages in their journey. Nursery is
provided. Email Johanna Wilson at
[email protected] for more infor-
mation. Hope to see you there!

Please come enjoy the holy, beau-
tiful, and universal characteristics
of Gregorian chant, the proper
chant of the Roman Church
which was inherited from the ancient priests. Join us
as we learn about Church history, liturgical seasons,
and feast days as we learn to chant. We meet the fol-
lowing Thursdays at 6:00 in the choir room:
October 12th and 26th, November 9th, December
7th, January 11th and 25th, February 8th and 22nd,
March 8th and 22nd, April 12th and 26th.
Stop and Think About How You
Spend Your Time! For most of us
our priorities are our children, our
jobs, career, leisure and God. How
much time do you spend just for the
two of you as a couple? You deserve to learn how to
make the most of your time and relationship. Make
time to enrich your relationship by attending a
Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The
next weekend in the diocese is scheduled in Hunts-
ville, Oct. 13–15 at the DoubleTree Hotel-
South. You can register online today at www.ALFL
-wwme.org or by calling Bob & Joy Hernandez at
678-985-0125.
The members of Holy Spirit Parish have been very
generous over the past year in keeping the St. Vin-
cent de Paul pantry filled in order to provide assis-
tance to those in need in the community. The
Thanksgiving and Christmas food drive is here and
we need your help to feed these families for the holi-
days. Please return your donated groceries no later
than October 29. Thank you for making a difference
in the lives of those less fortunate.

Auto Donation
Over the past four months
we have had five very gen-
erous donations of working
automobiles given to Holy Spirit SVdP Conference
(not to be confused with SVdP Wheels for Work-
ing). Thank you, as it has made a major difference
in these people’s lives. For a recipient to qualify to
receive a car, they must 1) write a letter requesting a
vehicle and state how it will help their work situa-
tion improve, 2) presently be employed, 3) have a
valid driver’s license and 4) have proof of valid in-
surance to drive the vehicle from the church. In this
part of the US it is very difficult to hold a steady job
without a car, so if you have a good running vehicle
that you would like to donate to SVdP just call Bob
McCoy at 256 603-7398 and I will help you with the
process. It is our primary objective to keep people
working. Thank you for your generosity.

Have you ever been asked Catholic ques-
tions at work, on the ball field, or at fam-
ily gatherings? Have you ever been
asked the reasons why Catholics do this
or that or why Catholics believe what they believe?
Most of us have been taught what we believe as
Catholics, but we have trouble explaining why we
believe it. Have you ever had trouble finding Catho-
lic doctrine in the pages of Scripture? Would you
like to be able to help your children embrace the
Catholic Faith? Lighthouse Catholic Media was de-
veloped to do all of these things and more. By listen-
ing to Lighthouse CD’s, Catholics learn the faith
well and are able to explain the reasons that we be-
lieve as we do. Catholics who avail of Lighthouse
books, CD’s, and booklets rejoice in their Catholic
faith and are able to evangelize others leading them
into the Church. If you have never listened to a
Lighthouse Catholic CD, try one today!
From the Library … We are all going to
die. How will we do it? In Jeffry Hendrix' 93-
page book, A Little Guide for Your Last
Days, he offers suggestions of faith and hope and
charity -- and the knowledge that you won't have to
do it alone. In his case (kidney cancer), the doctor
pretty much did all that could be done, and Jeffry
found himself in what he called the Pre-Death Club.
Realizing the inevitable had become a certainty, he
raised The Big Question -- What am I supposed to
do with the time I have left? His answers to that
question are "right on." This is not a morbid book, it
is full of love and joy -- and good ideas for that com-
ing time of your life.

Clergy Appreciation Dinner
October is Clergy Appreciation Month. The Northern Alabama Knights of Columbus Councils
and Assemblies will be holding a Clergy Appreciation Dinner for the priests, deacons, religious
sisters and brothers, and seminarians of northern Alabama on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the Holy
Spirit Parish Life Center.
This dinner provides an opportunity for all of us, as Catholics, to show our appreciation to all of these men
and women who have chosen to serve God by serving us. How different would our faith lives be without these
dedicated individuals?
Tickets will be $30.00 per person and can be purchased after Masses on October 8th and 15th and in the Parish
Office. Your attendance and support enables this dinner to occur and we encourage your participation.

During these “40 Days for Life”,
September 27 through November 5,
try to spend one - and if possible, many - hours
praying for the unborn at the abortion facility
located at 4831 Sparkman Drive,
between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm.
Sunday—October 29, 2017
2:00-4:00 PM (Pick up a sign in the Youth Room from 1:30 on)
Join the 30th NATIONAL LIFE CHAIN!
Stand with thousands of pro-lifers throughout the
USA! You'll be a light in a darkened world as you
help put an end to abortion through prayer! Bring
your whole family! Rain or shine! Water, lawn
chairs, umbrellas and strollers are welcome!
Come, Let Us Pray:
- For our personal repentance & for spiritual awak-
ening in our community and nation
- For unborn children’s protection and for an end to
legalized abortion
- For all who witness our Life Chain, that their eyes
& hearts will accept the truth
LIFE CHAIN is a peaceful and prayerful public
witness of pro-life Americans standing (for one to
two hours) and praying for our nation and for an end
to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity by
the Christian community that abortion kills children
and that the Church supports the sanctity of human
life from the moment of conception to natural death. Every destruction of a child
is a destruction of Jesus in the flesh.
Daily Reflections
Sunday: Blessed are those who mourn, for they
will be comforted (Mt 5:4). Lord, give me a broken
heart over abortion. Give me the grace to do my part
in ending this evil.
Monday: Repent and believe in the Gospel (Mk
1:15). Lent prepares us to share the victory of life,
and to live as the people of life.
Tuesday: Some people slanderously accuse us of
proposing, “let us do evil so that good may result”
(Rom 3:8). The battle for life is one that we conduct
only by choosing good. We can never destroy or kill
in the name of life.
Wednesday: Rise, take the child and his Mother
and flee to Egypt (Mt 2:20). St. Joseph is a model
for all Fathers. Thousands of times a day children
are aborted because of the choice of a father. Lord,
bless all fathers so that
Thursday: Even now, I know that God will grant
you whatever you ask of Him (Jn 11:21). Lord, we
are a people of hope. Grant us perseverance and vic-
tory in the battle for life.
Friday: Love your neighbor as yourself (Lev.
19:18). Let your command of love, O Lord, free us
from the prejudices that distract us. Open our eyes
to see every human person as our neighbor - through
all stages of life - and to act accordingly.
Saturday: If you wish to enter into life,
keep the Commandments. He said,
“Which ones?” And Jesus answered,
“You shall not kill” (Mt 19:17-18). Lord,
all the good you give us depends on life.
Bring an end to all killing so that we may
each walk the path to life eternal.
Spiritual Adoption Update: Our little children begin to be quite
active. Although they sleep a lot, on awaking they
exercise their muscles energetically, turning their
heads, curling their toes and opening and closing
their mouth. They can make tight fists. They
breathe amniotic fluid to help develop the respirato-
ry system. Fine hair has begun to grow on the head.
Let us be steadfast in our daily prayer
for our spiritually adopted children.

council’s greatest achievements was its recognition of the wisdom and value found in other faith traditions. Today, in an era where we face so much conflict in the world based on religious differences and misunderstandings, interfaith dialogue is needed more than ever. Make a point today to reach out to someone of another faith tradition—via a phone call, an email, a short note. Begin a dialogue that can help heal the world. Carry on the legacy of Vatican II and John XXIII.
TODAY'S READINGS: Jonah 4:1-11; Luke 11:1-4 (463). “For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.”
Thursday, Oct 12, 2017 Be persistent in prayer Do you have friends like this? They’ve got an endless stream of needs, and they bombard you with them by phone, email, and the old-fashioned doorstep method. They always seem to want your approval, advice, or sym-pathy for their latest crisis. They think nothing of asking you to bail them out of their lack of preparation for life in general. Sometimes you help them out of compassion and sometimes just to make them go away. Jesus prom-ises God will be even more responsive when we ask!
TODAY'S READINGS: Malachi 3:13-20b; Luke 11:5-13 (464). “Even though he will not get up because he is his friend, because of his persistence he will give him what he needs.”
Friday, Oct 13, 2017 The cycle is unbroken Jewish communities today celebrate Simchat Torah (“rejoicing with the Torah”), the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings and the beginning of a new cycle. The last section of the Book of Deuteronomy and the first section of the Book of Genesis are read out loud in the synagogue. In this way the cycle of readings is un-broken. The Roman Catholic cycle of liturgical readings also comes up for renewal every year on the first Sunday of Advent, about six weeks from now. The Judeo-Christian community is part of the never-ending story of salvation. Now is a good time to reflect on how important the cycle of holy readings is to your own sense of reli-gious identity.
TODAY'S READINGS: Joel 1:13-15; 2:1-2; Luke 11:15-26 (465). “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”
Saturday, Oct 14, 2017 MEMORIAL OF CALLISTUS I, POPE, MARTYR Drop the stone Saint Callistus I, pope from 217-222, was proof of Paul’s proclamation to the Galatians that “there is no longer Jew or Greek, no longer slave or free”—that through faith, all are one in Christ despite social status or even a check-ered past. Callistus himself was a freed slave and later sentenced to hard labor for fighting in a synagogue. Yet he became deacon to a pope and later pope himself, his imperfect past making him tolerant of remarried clergy as well as returning heretics in the early church. Though some thought him too lax, Callistus challenges us to for-give as Jesus did.
TODAY'S READINGS: Joel 4:12-21; Luke 11:27-28 (466). “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it!” ©2017 .
Sunday, Oct 08, 2017 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Forgiveness first Feeling the sting of personal offense, our first response is often to fight back. Forgiveness may occur to us, but we’ll push that idea aside as too soft. After all, we’ve been in-jured! Someone has done wrong and should be punished, and it’s our job to do the punishing! No matter what choice we make in the short run, sooner or later the busi-ness of forgiveness comes back around as the only viable solution. We could save ourselves a lot of trouble by em-ploying forgiveness first.
TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 5:1-7; Philippians 4:6-9; Matthew 21:33-43 (139). “The stone that the build-ers rejected has become the cornerstone.”
Monday, Oct 09, 2017 MEMORIAL OF DENIS, BISHOP, AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Send a message All martyrs’ stories seem to end alike, with blood on the ground. But behind all these bloody endings are some pretty remarkable beginnings, each one as unique as you are to the person next to you. Each starts with an individ-ual on fire with the beauty, hope, and truth of the gospel. Take Bishop Denis, future patron saint of France, who got together with six of his fellow bishops around the year 250 to bring the message of Jesus to Paris. It has been said that nothing is more eloquent than the blood of martyrs. These men became the message they brought. What message can you bring to the world?
TODAY'S READINGS: Jonah 1:1—2:1-2, 11; Luke 10:25-37 (461). “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Tuesday, Oct 10, 2017 Witness through your daily routine Let dust bunnies multiply and guests go hungry? It’s what Jesus seems to imply when Martha of Bethany grumbles about her slacker sister. But to the delight of moms and church ladies everywhere, centuries of Christian tradition have come to Martha’s defense. Thérèse of Lisieux won the hearts of millions with her “Little Way” of serving God—helping to launch the Catholic Worker Movement and its houses of hospitality by influencing Dorothy Day. Brother Lawrence, doing chores around the monastery, taught us how to practice the presence of God while washing dishes. Give witness to Christ today by showing love—especially in the smallest of gestures.
TODAY'S READINGS: Jonah 3:1-10; Luke 10:38-42 (462). “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself?”
Wednesday, Oct 11, 2017 MEMORIAL OF JOHN XXIII, POPE Heal the breach The Second Vatican Council opened on this day in 1962, under the leadership of Pope John XXIII. One of the
