Justicia versus venganza. Respeto versus insulto. Unidad versus división. Un Mundo de

Extremos. Otro ejemplo es la riqueza misma y los desesperadamente pobres.

En nuestros periódicos y la television, vemos muchas historias de personas que tienen

mucho dinero, riqueza y riquezas de las que nunca necesitarán. También vemos a aquellos

que están luchando sólo para mantenerse vivos cada día. Mientras nos dicen que nuestra

familia o las economías nacionales se están recuperando de serios desafíos financieros, el

número de bancos de alimentos y los esfuerzos caritativos están pasando necesidad. Muchas

iglesias y organizaciones benéficas informan que más y más personas están buscando ayuda y

apoyo con las necesidades básicas de la vida.

El Evangelio pone ante nosotros la abundancia del rico y la pobreza de Lázaro. Lázaro está

acostado a la puerta del rico con los perros como compañeros. Podemos ver al hombre rico

pasar por encima de Lázaro, ignorando la condición de Lázaro. Cuando ambos mueren,

Lázaro hereda la vida eterna con Dios, pero el hombre rico no. Sólo cuando muere se da

cuenta verdaderamente de Lázaro.

Por lo tanto, hay dos retos, fuera del ámbito de los desastres naturales,

¿cómo trato a los demás, especialmente a los pobres y marginados? ¿Cómo respondo cuando alguien más solicita ayuda?

Escuchamos el Evangelio cada vez que celebramos la Eucaristía. Pero su mensaje acerca de

cómo debemos vivir como seguidores de Jesús no sólo proviene de la Escritura. La

VERDAD viene a través de los que se encuentran a nuestra puerta, y a través de los que

mendigan en nuestras calles. La Palabra de Dios viene a nosotros a través de otros. La

Palabra de Dios está viva. La Palabra es vista y oída como alguien en Necesidad. Debemos

abrir los ojos para verlos. Necesitamos escucharlos para ayudarlos a ver a Dios.

Como Bautizados, estamos llamados a vivir nuestra fe a través de acciones concretas hoy.

Mediante la acción obtenemos conciencia de VER a los necesitados en nuestra puerta y

luego ELEGIR cómo responder. El hombre rico no hizo nada a Lázaro. No hizo nada por Lázaro. Su pecado fue indiferencia ... Un corazón frío, un alma ciega.

Cada día, en innumerables pequeños caminos, se nos pide que miremos más allá de nuestras

propias necesidades para ver las necesidades de los demás, para ver el rostro de Cristo. La

OPCION es nuestra. Podemos ayudar con misericordia y compasión o podemos alejarnos.

Se dice que para que el mal prospere todo lo que se necesita es que la gente buena no haga

nada. Miremos más allá de nuestras necesidades y veamos dónde podemos ayudar a otra

persona y marcar la diferencia.

L*E*A*D* Laity Empowered for Active Discipleship

Justice versus Revenge. Respect versus Insult. Unity versus Division. A World of

Extremes. Another example is the very wealth and the desperately poor.

In our newspapers and on our televisions, we see the many stories of people who have

more money, wealth and riches than they will ever need. We also see those who are

struggling just to stay alive each day. While we are told that our family or national

economies are recovering from serious financial challenges, the number of food banks

and charitable efforts are struggling. Many churches and charities report that more and

more people are looking for help and support with the basic necessities of life.

The Gospel puts before us the abundance of the rich man and the poverty of Lazarus.

Lazarus is lying at the rich man’s door with the dogs as companions. We can see the rich

man stepping over Lazarus, ignoring Lazarus’ condition. When both die, Lazarus

inherits eternal life with God, but the rich man does not. It is only when he dies does he

truly notice Lazarus.

So, there are two challenges, outside of the realm of natural disasters.

How do I treat others, especially the poor and marginalized? How do I respond when someone else asks for help?

We hear the Gospel every time we celebrate the Eucharist. But its message about how

we are to live as followers of Jesus does not only come from Scripture. The TRUTH

comes through those lying at our door, and through begging on our streets. God’s Word

comes to us through others. God’s Word is alive. The Word is seen and heard as

someone in Need. We must open our eyes to see them. We need to listen to them in

order to help them see God.

As those Baptized, we are called to live our faith through concrete actions today.

Through action we gain awareness to SEE those in Need at our door and then

CHOOSE how to respond. The rich man did nothing to Lazarus. He did nothing for Lazarus. His sin was indifference… A cold heart, a blind soul.

Every day, in countless small ways, we are asked to look beyond our own needs to see the

needs of others, to see the face of Christ. The CHOICE is ours. We can reach in mercy

and compassion or we can walk away. It is said that for evil to thrive all that this is

needed is that good people do nothing. Let us look beyond our needs and see where we

can help another person and make a difference.
