making up the largest portion of people who attend these events, so it is not uncommon to see people who you would not normally attend a rodeo attend a PBR event.

Professional Bull Riding is like any other major league sporting event, it is all about matching the best riders against the absolute toughest bulls, which in turn creates a level playing field and some very exciting moments that will keep the audience glued to the edge of their seats from start to finish and hungry for more.

This competition is going to be fierce from the first bull of the night to the last, riders have a lot at stake going into this competition, especially with the November Cup Series around the corner and all points and money won from this competition also counting towards the World Finals. Since this event is Round six of the new season, each and every rider is hungry to get seeded in the standings early and secure a spot for the upcoming Cup Series where they will compete for over $80,000 in prize-money.

However in this sport the riders only make up 50% of the event, the other 50% is the bulls. Not just any bull can compete in a PBR event, they must be proven and have the ability to deliver high scores.

With so many great bulls for riders to draw, it is all going to come down to the rider who can cover his first bull and earn enough points to make it back into the top 10 Championship

Round where they will do battle with the top 10 bulls in the competition.

For those who have not experienced a PBR event before, they can expect non-stop action from the start of the event to the finish. For those who may blink and miss something, the million dollar mega screen and multiple camera angles will offer slow motion replays

of each ride as well as taking the audience inside the chute and behind the scenes to see each rider prepare for their ride.

Buckle up Scone as this is going to be one event you do not want to miss.

Ensemble Offspring Presents Music To Infinity The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music (UHCM) is excited to bring Ensemble Offspring to Muswellbrook on Saturday 6 October as part of its 2012 Visiting Artists Series supported by Arts NSW.

The UHCM invites those with a thirst to expand their musical experience and have fun to join Ensemble Offspring on Saturday 6 October at the Muswellbrook South Public School hall for a performance they won’t forget.

Australia’s foremost new music ensemble, Ensemble Offspring is dedicated to the performance of innovative new music and encourages the community to throw out their preconceptions, open their mind and be inspired in Music to Infinity, a playful concert exploring the infinite realms of 21st Century music making.

Ensemble Offspring’s dream percussion team of Bree van Reyk and Claire Edwardes are joined by multi-talented clarinettist-come-table-hitter Jason Noble, in an imaginative program that will see musicians donning blindfolds, playing table-tops and telling childhood stories.

New works especially written for the unique trio include a solo for hi hat and voice by

expat Matthew Shlomowitz and Cycles and Circles, featuring homemade music boxes, by James Humberstone - sheer delight for the young and the young at heart.

Tickets are now on sale for this exciting and unique music experience. Adults $15 and Concessions $10. Contact the UHCM today on 6541 4888 for booking enquiries.

Ensemble Offspring is a unique organization dedicated to the performance of innovative new music. Driven by open-mindedness and performance excellence, Ensemble Offspring’s activities promote diverse and emerging music practices that expose audiences to new ways of experiencing sound. The group embraces a broad and progressive repertoire from seminal chamber music of the past 50 years, to free improvisation and the creation of striking interdisciplinary productions.

Led by Artistic Directors Claire Edwardes (percussion) and Damien Ricketson (composer), the ensemble comprises a team

of virtuoso performers with broad ranging talents: some performing concertos with renowned symphony orchestras and others touring the world with indie pop bands.

In 2011 Ensemble Offspring was nominated in nine categories at the 2011 Art Music Awards. Recent highlights include the 2010 Sydney Festival, ensemble-in-residence at the 2010 ISCM World New Music Days and an International tour to China (2011). Performing in venues ranging from Sydney Opera House to local Sydney bowling clubs, Ensemble Offspring has developed a reputation for its uniquely adventurous and engaging programs.

Photo Competition for Blokes“Celebrate, Connect, Grow” is the theme for the photo competition for blokes being run by the Scone Neighbourhood Centre in October. We would like your photos to feature how you, as a male, celebrate the positive things in your life, how you connect with others doing things that make you feel good or how you grow by trying new and different things.

Bernie Rischke, project officer for the Neighbourhood Centre said, “Males provide a strong influence in many positive ways to each other, their families and the wider community. We often take this for granted and overlook the things that are important to men. We want to give males a chance to share those things through photographs and look forward to receiving many entries.”

An open day to exhibit the photographs will be held at the Scone Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday, 20 October from 9:00 am to 12:00pm followed by a presentation and light lunch. Everyone is welcome to attend the open day, and those planning to stay for the presentation and lunch will need to let the Neighbourhood Centre know by 17 October.

Entry forms for the competition are available from the Scone Neighbourhood Centre. Entries close on Friday, 12 October.

For more information, contact Bernie Rischke on 6545 2562.

Trout Season OpenThe opening of NSW notified trout waters on the October Labour Day long weekend marks the end of the annual spawning period which began on the Monday of the June long weekend. Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries Compliance Director, Glenn Tritton, said the four month annual closure allows trout to travel up rivers and streams to breed uninterrupted.

“Each year many anglers take the opportunity to cast a line as soon as the season opens, but in their enthusiasm some neglect to follow the rules,” Mr Tritton said.

“I remind all fishers that they must hold a NSW R e c re a t i o n a l Fishing Fee R e c e i p t c o m m o n l y known as a fishing licence, and it must be carried with them when fishing.

“In addition to having a current

licence, fishers must make sure they comply with a range of fish size, bag and possession limits.

“Only one fishing rod and line can be used in trout rivers and streams whilst two attended fishing rods and lines can be used in general trout dams. Some rivers are restricted to flies or lures only and anglers should check the rules before fishing.

“These regulations have been put in place to safeguard our fish stocks for present and future generations.

“Fisheries officers will be out across the State during the October long weekend ensuring fishers are following the rules.”

Senior Inland Fisheries Manager, Cameron Westaway, said the extensive DPI fish stocking program, coupled with a series of good wet years, should ensure a great opening weekend with productive fishing opportunities during the open fishing season.

“Fishers are expected to flock to their favourite fishing spots in the Snowy Mountains and

the southern, central and northern NSW tablelands,” Mr Westaway said.

“Last season more than 2.8 million rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout and Atlantic salmon were stocked into rivers, streams and impoundments throughout the mountains and tableland areas.

“This is great news for anglers looking for a catch of trout this fishing season.”

NSW Recreational Fishing Licenses can be purchased from local DPI offices, at fishing licence agents, by calling 1300 369 365 or online at www.licence.nsw.gov.au.

Information on NSW fishing rules can be found in the Recreational Fishing Guides available online and from DPI Fisheries offices, fishing licence agents and bait and tackle shops.

Black and White Pepper Caters to All TastebudsStory by Katrina Partridge

Black and White Pepper Café/Restaurant opened next to Coles in Scone in July this year. The café is open from Monday to Wednesday from 8am to 8pm and from Thursday to Sunday between 8am and 9pm. Customers have the choice of eat-in dining or takeaway.

The restaurant complements two other cafés owned by the Group which are situated in Tamworth.

“We offer a range of food - Mediterranean, Indian, European and Asian,” says Area Manager Arif Rahman. “All backgrounds are catered for!”

For those wanting an old fashioned hamburger or some fish and chips – don’t despair – your favourites are on the menu as well.

Postscript: ever wondered what the difference actually is between white and black pepper? They both come from the same plant, but, as with red and green peppers, the final colour has to do with their ripeness. Peppercorns are the berries of the pepper plant which is native to Southern Asia. You might be interested to know that the primary spice that Europe’s explorers were seeking when they accidentally found the New World on their “shortcut” to Asia was pepper. It still accounts for a quarter of the world’s spice trade. A black peppercorn is picked when still green and dried in the sun until it turns black. A white peppercorn ripens fully on the vine before it is picked. Black pepper has a slightly hotter flavor and aroma

Junior Cowboy Champion Luke Parkinson To Ride at MuswellbrookBy Katrina Parkinson

Luke Parkinson is not your everyday 10 year old. Whilst many of his peers would consider a Playstation game the height of their day’s adrenalin fix Luke looks instead to the thrills and spills of the rodeo circuit. Six seconds riding out a bucking steer in style to take home maximum points at rodeos across the State all year takes guts, determination and a whole lot of practice so you can’t help but do a double take when you spot this champion who’s not much bigger than the cowboy hat atop his head. Belying his age however Luke holds the 2011 National Under 11 Poddy Ride Champion and National Finals 8 & under 11yrs Poddy Ride Qualifier Titles and is currently the 2012 leader of the Under 18 All Round Cowboy Standings, 8 & under 11 year Poddy Ride Standings, Southern Zone 8 & Under 11 Yr Poddy Ride Champion and Eastern Zone Poddy Ride Champion.

“I have been riding at home since I was four

and competing as soon as I could - I was the youngest cowboy to win the national finals poddy ride average when I was eight,” says Luke.

Luke’s parents, Roger and Jillian Parkinson said Luke is a fourth generation rodeo competitor and worked hard to emulate his heroes, uncle, Steven Parkinson and cousin, Ty Parkinson, Moonbi, who had won multiple national championships and all round titles. Luke’s

brother Brent also competes on the circuit in the Junior Breakaway Roping and 11-14 years Barrel Race and will be a national finalist in both these events this year.

Luke’s career goals start with winning a junior All-Round Cowboy buckle and culminate with plans to compete on the highly lucrative USA rodeo circuit.

“One day, I’m going to ride bulls, steer wrestle, rope and tie and team rope and win an all-round cowboy title, then head to the US,” he said.

If he’s right – and one suspects he is - you’d better get down to Muswellbrook to see this future international star in action !

All proceeds from the Muswellbrook Charity Rodeo will benefit Muswellbrook Hospital Auxiliary. The rodeo will be held at Muswellbrook Showground on 20 & 21 October. The rodeo starts at 1pm with the junior & novice events, then some timed events, with the main performance kicking off at 6pm. The campdraft starts at 7am on Saturday and Sunday.

Local Students Meet Industry Champions at Singleton Show Now in its 140th year, the Singleton Show has provided a new way for local primary school students to learn about the many industries that contribute to the Upper Hunter’s community and economy.

leisure & lifestyle

Our Local Industry – Walk of Fame, a partnership between the Singleton Show and Coal & Allied, saw students take part in a round robin of interactive presentations with local champions from the wine, dairy, beef and energy industries.

Dairy farmer Alex Berry, whose family owns Banfield and Catevale Properties outside of Singleton, brought along some calves to demonstrate how milk is made.

Mr Berry said “Some of the students were amazed to hear that milk actually comes from animals! Overall, I think it was a great experience for them to hear from a range of speakers and learn a bit more about our local industries.

“Our farm has been in the family for over 20 years and today we have around 375 dairy cows and 150 dairy goats, which we use to produce cow and goat milk. While we sell the cow milk to a national food company, the goat milk is sold to a Cessnock dairy company

where it is turned into cheese products.”

Singleton Public School Teacher Gai Scoles said “More than 70 students from years one and two took part in the initiative, which was a great success. It has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to see that Singleton is made up of a range of industries and hear first-hand how they are all important to the growth and development of our community.”

Singleton Show Committee Member Michelle Richards said “We felt it would be a great idea to educate our younger students by having people from a variety of industries talk about what they do through interactive presentations.

“For example, Alex was able to show the students that milk doesn’t just arrive on the shelf in the supermarket but that it comes from a dairy cow. The children were so excited to see the animals and it really helped them absorb the information.

“I am very pleased with how it all went and

want to thank all the speakers and Coal & Allied for their time organising and taking part in this initiative. It has really enhanced the Singleton Show’s educational programme for young people.”

Coal & Allied Community Relations Manager Jennifer Bowcock said “We’re very proud to work in partnership with the Singleton Show Committee to help bring Our Local Industry – Walk of Fame together. I’d also like to thank all the speakers for their time and support, which has been well received by the students.”
