Call to Reconciliation Dr. Bailey Success, winning at every cost, trying to be the smartest in the room…been there, done that the apostle Paul is saying. His example challenges us to receive what it is we truly need - forgiveness, peace, rescue and hope - when we have Jesus as part of our lives. Let us allow God to help us reset our priorities. We pray together saying: Confessing Together Loving God, full of mercy and grace, you continue to remind us that to love you, our neighbours and ourselves is to live life the Jesus way; the way of love, joy, faith, peace and justice. We have been created by Love, surrounded by Love, and made whole by your Loving ways towards us. Why then do we do such a terrible job loving others as you love us? Why do we have to put others down and discriminate against them to make ourselves feel better? Are we not all made in your magnificent image? We ask you to forgive us, Merciful God; but do not let us off the hook. We pray you to challenge and help us to overcome our need to feel better than others. This is a beautiful world you have made, with a gorgeous diversity of people. Please help us to obey your command to love others as we love ourselves. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Silence Words of Grace and Forgiveness from God Dr. Bailey Choral Response: Halle, halle, halle (sing twice) Hymn: “He’s Got the Whole World”

WE LISTEN FOR THE WORD OF GOD

First Scripture Lesson: Philippians 3:4b-14 (video recorded) (Huda Kandalaft Kanawati – Congregational Designated Minister for Youth and Families) Responsive Lesson: Isaiah 5:1-7 Rev. Alcris One: Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. Many: He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. One: and now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. Many: What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have

not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? One: and now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. Many: I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. One: for the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry! Gloria, Gloria in Excelsis Deo Gloria, Gloria, Alleluia, Alleluia (2x)

Gospel Lesson: Matthew 21:33-46 Dr. Bailey

Anthem: In Remembrance of Me

Previously Recorded, Sung by Rob Hilkes, Alexandra Stockwell and Elaine West

In remembrance of me, eat this bread. In remembrance of me, drink this wine. In remembrance of me, pray for a time when God’s own will is done. In remembrance of me, heal the sick. In remembrance of me, feed the poor. In remembrance of me, open the door and let your brother in, let him in. Take, eat, and be comforted; drink and remember, too that this is my body and precious blood shed for you, shed for you. In remembrance of me, search for truth. In remembrance of me always love. In remembrance of me, don’t look above, but in your heart, look in your heart for God. Do this in remembrance of me. Authors Buryl Red, Ragan Courtney Inc Copyright 1972. FAITH WITH JOY AND COURAGE *Hymn: Sent Forth by God’s Blessing VU#481

Sent forth by God's blessing, our true faith confessing, the people of God from this dwelling take leave.

The supper is ended, O now be extended the fruits of this service in all who believe.

The seed of Christ's teaching, receptive souls reaching, shall blossom in action for God and for all.

God's grace did invite us, God's love shall unite us to work for the kingdom and answer its call.

With praise and thanksgiving to God ever living,

the tasks of our everyday life we will face. Our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,

embracing God's children of each tribe and race. With your feast you feed us, with your light now lead us;

unite us as one in this life that we share. Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving give honour to Christ and the name that we bear.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Confidential Phone Counselling – by Dr. Bailey. Contact information: [email protected]; 613 728-8656 x 222 Continuing in Prayer and Support: In these times, as in all times, we are trusting God to grant us wisdom, mercy and faith. As a community of faith and followers of Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us not to ‘be afraid’. Normally, this exhortation is accompanied by God’s promise to be with us. God being with us inspires and empowers us to be ‘with’ each other. We do this by praying for one another and reaching out by phone, facetime, Facebook, email, WhatsApp… you name it. Let’s just stay connected. We send love and wish everyone comfort and good health, and look forward to hearing from you. May God bless us all. LUNCHTIME BIBLICAL/THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION ON THE PANDEMIC (NOON TILL ONE O’CLOCK) Still not too late to join. See the details below to join. We will continue this time of reflection on how Biblical texts, wisdom, and faith can help us explore the Pandemic experience. Both in the Bible and throughout human history, times of devastating loss, widespread grief and disasters have challenged the human family to make sense of these events. This will be an opportunity to explore some biblical texts, historical events, our present Pandemic moment and how our understanding of God and the teachings of Jesus can be essential resources of blessing, comfort and engagement. These sessions are held on Tuesdays (noon to 1:00 pm.) via Zoom. If you are interested, please register by sending an email to Don Mockett at [email protected]. You will receive the Zoom link and passcode as well as the resource sheet. Anthony

Recommended Resources: A FILM: Jordan River Anderson, The Messenger by Alanis Obomsawin – NFB www.nfb.ca

(Recommended by Elise Mennie) Alanis Obomsawin’s 52nd film tells the

story of how the life of Jordan River Anderson initiated a battle for

the right of First Nations and Inuit children to receive the same

standard of social, health and educational services as the rest of the

Canadian population.

This is a touching, hard-hitting film, exposing the tenacious systemic racism within Canada’s healthcare and social services systems. The film is 1 hour 5 min. long. https://www.nfb.ca/film/jordan-river-anderson-the-messenger/?utm_campaign=625107_2020-09-04_Newsletter_-_Jordan_River_Anderson&utm_medium=email&utm_source=NFB-All_Users

IN THIS TIME OF GLOBAL PANDEMIC LET US

CONTINUE TO BE JOYFUL IN HOPE, PATIENT IN

AFFLICTION, FAITHFUL IN PRAYER (Romans 12:12).

We also continue to watch the news prayerfully so we pray for

our world and for one another… “… the Spirit helps us in our

weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit

himself intercedes for us with groaning’s too deep for words.” (Romans 8: 6)

- We prepare our hearts to offer our Thanksgiving as a nation

next week. We commit to be attentive this week to notice things for

which we are thankful to our God.

- We also give thanks for God’s answers to our prayers and for

meeting us with new mercies every day. Thanks for we are met with

grace and favour, for the gift of faith, healing and restoration, for

protection and peace in difficult times; and for the gifts of sharing,

service and community.

- We pray for safety for children and teachers as they are back to

school; for parents and School Boards, car poolers, staff and for all

involved in our children’s education system. For kids and parents

who are doing homeschooling.

- For the surge of cases here and other countries. For all who are

with COVID19, for their families and for those most vulnerable and

Page 15: October 4, 2020 10:30 am Sunday Worship Service (Virtual ...€¦ · Rev Alcris: (Spanish) El amor de Dios unifica todas las personas del mundo en una famillia. Huda Kandalaft: (Arabic)

exposed to the virus. We pray for our senior citizens in nursing

homes and senior residences.

- For our federal and provincial governments to make wise

decisions on behalf of the people. For our Health Care system

officials, researchers and health centers, frontline staff -and their

families. For frontline workers in service areas

- For victims of hatred and violence, -including young children;

natural disasters, political persecution, famine, and lack of resources

to face this Pandemic. For countries in political turmoil or under

dictatorship regimes.

- For our congregation, and the whole Body of Christ in the

world, so we may be ready to support and walk in solidarity with

those facing systemic injustice and prejudices; to be a help in this

time of Pandemic in any capacity we can.

- For all suffering from other physical and mental health

conditions and illnesses; especially for cancer patients and cancer

survivors in our midst.

- For our congregation and our families. For those of us who are

in hospital, who are in treatment, who are feeling the impact of social

isolation, who are looking for a new place to live, who are in need of

assistance or are looking for a job, making difficult decisions, for

those who are grieving and those whose families are expanding.

- For our elderly saints in long-term care homes.

- For all those in the most vulnerable situation in societies: no

housing, even more limited resources, no access to services, no

spaces for community, mental conditions.

- For social workers, nonprofit organizations and government

instances that work to support those in the gaps of society.

Loving God, we know you hear our prayers, so we give thanks!
