Dr. Mandel’s Message
Dear MHS Parents & Guardians,
This week has a different bell schedule on Thursday and Friday for end-of-quarter exams. We have included
the schedule below for your convenience. Please remind your student to prepare for any tests or projects. Time
management is often a struggle during these high stress times, and planning ahead can be essential to achieving
success.
In addition, there will be no After School Activity Buses on Thursday, Oct. 6th
and Friday, Oct. 7th
.
I look forward to our next quarter of school together after Fall Break.

A group on campus is working to create at least ten sleeping mats for the homeless with hopes of delivering just
before winter break. In order to accomplish this goal, we need at least 5,000 plastic grocery bags. Please send or
bring yours in! We also need crochet hooks in size N or O and a few pairs of sharp scissors. If you’d like to
donate hooks or scissors, if you have any questions, or if you’d like to help crochet the mats or cut and ball the
bags into “plarn” (plastic yarn), please contact Mrs. Katie Anderson at [email protected]. Thank
you!

PBIS News
The Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) recognizes the good things that happen on our campus
daily. When a staff member sees a student following the PBIS code of being Respectful, Responsible, or Safe
they are given a Tiger ticket. The back usually has a positive comment on what the student was observed doing
well. The student can then turn the ticket in for an end of the year drawing. Prizes can include dance tickets,
movie tickets, and gift cards just to name a few. It’s really just our way to say thanks for doing something great
around our campus like so many students do.

ATHLETIC News

Volleyball: Coach Ball says, “Mele Hala’ufia is our senior middle blocker. She is a very dedicated athlete and
has shown great mental toughness. This is her first year in the program and is doing an amazing job for us! She
is leading the Sonoran conference in solo blocks and stuff blocks. She is a great athlete and has been a
wonderful addition to our team this year.”
Football: Coach Litten says, “Manny Miranda has been huge for us the last two weeks. He’s accumulated 5
touchdowns and has been our leading tackler on defense.”
Girls Golf: Coach Corona says, “Lauren Scott is the most improved golfer on the team. She consistently works
hard on her game and is a steady and reliable player. Her scores consistently reflect her desire to improve as a
golfer. I appreciate her work ethic and sense of team.”
XC: Coach Bartz says, “Jordan Toone has worked really hard to come back from injury this season. Given the
fact he has only had 3 weeks worth of workouts and mileage, he had an outstanding race this past Friday,
running in the low 18s. Friday night at Desert Twilight was a great representation of his dedication, motivation
and overall work ethic he has had throughout this Cross Country season.”
There will be Special End Zone Seating for home football games. Watch the game from the comfort of an
adirondak chair in the south end zone. Each seat is $20 and must be purchased prior to the game from our
bookstore. There will only be 20 seats per game so act fast. Games remaining: October 7 vs. Cholla, October
14 vs. Poston Butte, and October 28 vs. TBD. See attached flyer.

CTE SPOTLIGHT
MHS Culinary Arts
At MHS we are very proud to offer a diverse array of CTE/JTED programs. The Integration of these
programs throughout our curriculum is just one of the many opportunities for students that our comprehensive
high school provides. Throughout the year we will be sharing glimpses into the programs with you.
Take a look at our Culinary Arts program…
CTE Culinary Arts is serving up something special this school year! Our program is full of fun, feasting and
hard work. When you’re part of Culinary Arts you learn about teamwork, catering, safety, sanitation, cooking,
baking and pastry. The students get hands on experiences and have class in an industry facility right here at
MHS. The students spend 50% of their time in Culinary labs to prepare them for industry jobs right from high
school. The students also operate their own business here on campus called LE Tigre Cafe’. It is operated by
our advanced and intermediate students and opens three days a week during lunch. During the course of the
year we participate in community service, caterings and other special events that is run by our FCCLA. When
you stay in in the program you are also able to receive your Servsafe certification, which is required by industry
professionals to have. Also, we offer Pima dual enrollment classes. When students leave from the culinary
program that have the opportunity to complete 12 college credits.
