Scams It is most unfortunate that there are people in this world who are intent on taking from others for their own personal gain. Morally speaking, this is

called stealing, and in our modern era it is taking place rampantly over electronic media. If these despicable people spent even half as much time in a legitimate enterprise, their life would be far more successful, if not financially then at least as a human being.

Occasionally these scams hit close to home. At least three times in the past year and a half, members of our parishes have received bogus emails from me, asking for some sort of financial assistance, usually gift cards, for someone in need. If you receive such an email, do not even open it, just delete. I would never use this flimsy and impersonal way of requesting assistance.

This sort of thing has become so frequent that in its Friday, October 11 edition, the Pittsburgh Catholic had a front page article about it because so many of us pastors have had this experience and we find it frustrating because it plays on the trust that parish members place in us. We have reported these incidents to the police, but there is little they can do.

It’s noteworthy that this practice has extended into related venues. For example, recently our representative from Diocesan, our bulletin publisher, informed us that some of the businesses and services that advertise on the last pages of this bulletin (thereby providing it to us for free) were receiving phony invoices from someone other that Diocesan (no connection to the Diocese of Pittsburgh). Fortunately this was caught before much damage could be done.

Please be vigilant in your use of electronic media, where there is much potential for the benefit of all, but also the possibility of causing great harm.

Something to think about: “If you want to make peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.” - Moshe Dayan

In Other news: At our recent safety and emergency training sessions pro-vided by the Ross and West View police departments, they recommended that we upgrade our first aid capabilities. Thanks to Mark Devlin (Devlin Funeral Home), Rob Schellhaas (Schellhaas Funeral Home) and Joyce For-sythe (Brandt Funeral Home) for their generous contributions to purchase these 50-piece trauma first aid kits….stay tuned for more news….

Second Collection for Archdiocese for the Military Services

Next weekend, November 2-3, the second collection at all parishes is a National collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services. This collection will help the Archdiocese for the Military Services and its priests bring the Church’s full range of pastoral services to the men and women in uniform, as well as their families, and patients in the nation’s VA Medical Cen-ters. The Archdiocese receives no government funding. The military does not allow a percent-age of collections in its chapels to go to the military Archdiocese. It depends entirely on pri-vate giving to serve those who serve. Please be as generous as possible.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Help Feed the Needy for Thanksgiving!

There are individuals and families within our parishes and nearby areas who will not share a traditional Thanksgiving meal without your help. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul encourages everyone to bring donations of non-perishable foods to Masses during the weekend of November 16-17, 2019. Items will be distributed to needy families by the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St. Sebastian. Please check the expiration dates beforehand and place your donations in the decorated baskets or food bins at St. Athanasius and St. Sebastian Churches. Since local supermarkets no longer give away free turkeys, you may consider a donation for the purchase of certificates that will be given to needy families to buy their turkeys. If you wish to donate $10 for a certificate, please complete the form be-low, enclose it with your donation in an envelope marked “Thanksgiving Certificate,” and drop it in the collection basket at any Neighbors North Catholic Community Masses during the weekend of November 16-17, or drop it off at the St. Sebastian Office by Monday, November 18, 2019 marked St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive. Thank you for your outstanding generosity in helping the needy during this holiday season!

Please return this portion with your donation

I/We are happy to donate $10.00 to purchase a turkey certificate for a needy family. We are grateful that we are able to help and enclose our donation of cash or check made payable to St. Vincent de Paul. Name: ________________________________________________

Trunk or Treat! Sunday, Oct 27!!!

We start At 2:00

Instead of filling trunks, fill tables with goodies at

Saint Athanasius Hall—we’ve found that it’s

better to be safe and warm inside than to be

outside in the parking lot. To reserve a table that

you can decorate and distribute candy from,

please call the parish office at 412-931-4624.

Answering the Call to Holiness Called to Priesthood The whole community of believers is a priestly people. All the baptized exercise their priesthood through their participation in Christ's mission, each according to his or her own vocation. The ministerial priesthood and the common priesthood of all the faithful participate, “each in its own proper way, in the one priesthood of Christ.” While being “ordered one to another,” they differ essentially. The common priesthood of the faithful is exercised by the unfolding of baptismal grace—a life of faith, hope, and charity, a life according to the Spirit. The ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. It is directed at the unfolding of the baptismal grace of all Christians. The ministerial priesthood is a means by which Christ unceasingly builds up and leads his Church. Through the ordained ministry of priests, the presence of Christ as head of the Church is made visible in the midst of the community of believers. Prayer for Priests: Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our priests. Help our priests to be strong in their vocation. Set their souls on fire with love for You and your people. Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Inspire them and allow them to experience joy in their ministry. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

We will begin accepting Mass requests for 2020 on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 9 a.m. Requests may be hand delivered or mailed to the parish office where you would like to have your Mass offered. All requests will be honored on a first-come, first-serve basis in the order in which the forms are received in the parish office beginning Wednesday, November 6th at 9 a.m. No Mass requests will be accepted or scheduled for 2020 prior to that date. All Mass requests must be made in writing on the Mass Request form. These forms are available in the Narthex. No Mass requests will be accepted by phone.

A $10.00 stipend, as determined by Diocesan policy, is to accompany each Mass request. Cash or checks will be accepted. You may use one check to cover all Mass requests. Checks should be made payable to the parish where the Mass will be offered.

In order to allow as many parishioners as possible to schedule Masses, the following policies are put forth to accomplish this goal:

• We are unable to accept Mass requests for Private or Special Intentions.

• Since there are less Mass times available than in previous years, there is a limit of three (3) Masses per household that can be requested and offered at the parish. With the limit of one weekend (Saturday Vigil/Sunday) Mass. However, if you have more Masses to be offered for your loved ones than can be scheduled here at the parish, we will be happy to schedule them at the other parishes in our grouping, or at the area nursing homes where our priests offer Mass weekly. No intentions will be accepted for Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Christmas or on the Sunday Masses when First Communions are celebrated. Intentions for all Masses on these days will be for all living and deceased members of our parish families or for the intentions of the First Commu-nicants and their families. Also, one Mass every Sunday must be scheduled for our parish members as re-quired by Canon Law and diocesan statute.

We will do our best to schedule your Mass intentions as you request. We ask that you read the bulle-tin each week for the schedule of Masses. Every effort will be made to accommodate your requests as close to the requested date and time as possible. Please list a first and second choice of date and time on the form. If your first or second choice is not available, you will be given the closest available day. Please keep in mind that scheduled Masses may occasionally need to be moved to another day due to availability of priests. If you desire to schedule a silver or golden wedding anniversary Mass in 2020, we ask that you make your request at this time also, if possible. These celebrations in a family are special times.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

It is the prayers of the needy that scripture tells us God hears. Sirach mentions the widow and the orphan, the lowly and the oppressed. Jesus tells of the tax collector, acknowledging his sinfulness and his need for God’s mercy. The Lord hears the cry of the poor, we sing in the psalm. Let us look inside ourselves and recognize our needfulness, our humanness, and our poverty. We can journey to wholeness by healing our brokenness.

Parish Social Ministry

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness One of the many respect life issues is the grief experienced by parents who suffer the pain of miscarriage, stillbirth, or infertility. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Did you know that a miscarriage after 20 weeks gestation requires a proper burial for that baby? This is an incredibly painful time for families, who often suffer silently, with little support. We don’t know

what to say or do for them, and if we do say something, we say the wrong things like “There will be another baby” or “you will get pregnant again”. Families need our support through prayer and understanding. There are support groups for families experiencing this type of grief. Please contact the Social Ministry office for more information.

MaryJo Robbins

All Souls Mass: Each November, the Church remembers those who have died in past year, and prays for them in a special way. Our Neighbors North Catholic Community Mass of Remembrance will be on Monday, November 4 at 7:00pm at Saint Sebastian Church. All are welcome.

Thank you: We have a very dedicated Respect Life group here at Neighbors North. They organized the Pro-Life artwork that we had on display. Each year they coordinate the Life Chain on Perry Highway. Many of them advocate for life outside of Planned Parenthood. They support diaper drives and baby bottle collections. And they attend the March for Life each year. Thank you to all who make these efforts possible!

Food Pantry Needs: Juice, hot chocolate, pineapple, pears, peas, beets, pudding, jello, hamburger helper, spaghetti, canned pasta sauce, chef Boyardee, beef stew, canned chicken, macaroni and cheese, boxed and canned potatoes, jelly, cake and brownie mix, cereal, condiments, dishwashing soap, bathroom tissue and detergent. Please leave in the food collection bin in the back of St. Sebastian or St. Athanasius Church. Thank You!!

Thank You for making the SVDP Friends of the Poor Walk a Success!! We could not do this ministry without your support and generosity.

Faith Formation

The Thirtieth Sunday I n Ordinary Time Let’s begin this reflection with a simple question, “Why do we need to compare ourselves to others?” We do it all the time. Social media has helped in this process. The spike of envy it triggers is natural, and social media is primed to amp it up. Young people see images of others and immediately want to look like them, dress like them, smell like them, and act like them. However, some people compare themselves to others in order to feel better about themselves. It’s no surprise that the Pharisee in the story further inflates his ego by thanking God for not making him like the rest of humanity having compared himself to everyone else, even the fellow standing with him in the temple.

In St. Luke’s inimitable style, he begins this story with the words, “ Two people went up to the temple area to pray…” Believers and those who read the Gospels regularly already know this story addressed to “those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else.”

The model for prayer in the First Century Judaism was more than likely, the Pharisee. Jesus teaches his disciples to pray in humility before God. Jesus surprises his listeners by showing the tax collector as the example of faith, rather than the Pharisee.

In contrast, Jesus offers the tax collector as a model for prayer. Tax collectors were collaborators with the Roman authorities in a system that allowed the tax collectors to line their own pockets by charging in excess of the defined taxes. Tax collectors were not poor. Yet, in this parable, Jesus offers the humility of the tax collector as a model for the prayer of a disciple. The parable reminds us that when we pray, we must remember our need for God in our lives. If we are too full of ourselves, there is too little room for God's grace to work in us.

Are you seeking a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith?

Do you think about what it means to be a Catholic today?

This is a formation process that culminates in the recep-

tion of one (or more) of the Easter Sacraments of Initia-

tion: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist

“The publican went home at peace with God, for everyone who ex-

ults himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall

be exulted.”

Ten little things that can help bring peace into your home:

Speak kindly. It is amazing how a little kindness goes a long way to setting the tone for the home.

Gather regularly. Be together for meals, for prayer and to simply hang out with each other. Laugh readily. Joke and play and have a good time with one another. Lighten one another’s load with a good laugh. Work cheerfully. It seems there is always a job to be done. Make the most of it. Give generously. Be generous with your time and your possessions. The home is a place full of all kinds of giving opportunities. Forgive quickly. Do not waste time nursing a grudge. Hug freely. Give your little ones a squeeze. Wrap your arms around your big kids. Your spouse could probably use one too! Pray frequently. Ask God to bring peace into your home. Lift up the needs of the day. Seek Him for wisdom on all your days. Cheer loudly. Let your family know you are behind them. All the way. Offer your enthu-siastic support. Love genuinely. Never forget how powerful love can be in our home.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL NEEDS YOUR HELP

Operating since 1852, the St. Vincent de Paul Society serves local individuals on a person to person level across six counties hat make up the Pittsburgh Council. There are 97 conferences in the Pittsburgh District. We have helped families with food and food certificates, rent, utilities and other needs that have arisen in emergency situations. Our primary source of income is from running four stores (Monroeville, Castle Shannon, Coraopolis and Penn Hills) and a recycling center. We are in need of donations- - even taking items (and shoes) that are not wearable that we can sell for rags to other countries. Please would you consider volunteering for four hours per week at one of our locations? We are very grateful for your consideration. Please call our Volunteer Coordinator, Jeane Kish at 412-343-4455 or [email protected]

Liturgy of the Word for Children: is a NEW MINISTRY being explored for Incarnation of the Lord Parish. Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) would be celebrated on the first Sunday of the month starting on December on the Sunday of Advent and would continue until the first Sunday in May 2020. In order to facilitate this ministry for our youngest members of our Neighbors North Community, the ministry needs interested adults or families who are willing to work with the children. Training and all needed materials would be

provided. How does CLOW unfold at Mass? After the Collect is prayed and right before the first reading starts, the children are called forward to gather in the center aisle. The priest or the deacon gives them a blessing and the children and adult ministers exit the main body of the church to a pre-arranged gathering space. The ministers “break open” the Scripture on a child’s level so they can understand the readings and relate them to the children’s everyday lives. After the creed and the prayers of the faithful, the children rejoin their families sin the church proper. If you are interested in launching this vital ministry for our children, please feel free to contact Bette Weger, 412-364-8999 or email her at [email protected]. The children truly experience the love of God in their everyday lives. May the Holy Spirit open your hearts to this ministry! Thank You. Holy Cross Academy

The fifth grade students are working hard as we come to the close of the first quarter of our school year. In math the students are working on algebraic expressions and multiplication of multi-digit numbers. The science classes are a

force to be reckoned with! They are encountering Newton’s Laws of Motion. In reading students are diligently working to

improve their comprehension skills and getting ready for their October reading projects. Stop by to see our excellent projects displayed in the hallway outside our classroom doors. The social studies classes are taking a look at the past. Students are learning about the settlement of the Spanish colonies in the new world. Excitement is brewing in the air as we prepare for the Traveling Museum of Saints! With a touch of fun and holiday cheer, we soon will be carving pumpkins.
