FROM PASTOR CASEY

This past month has been full of amazing things for both JPC and me. I am officially

ordained! Hurray! I am so excited to be able to call myself the associate pastor at

Jamestown Presbyterian! Sunday the 13th was truly an amazing day for me and I am

blessed to have been able to share that day with all of you.

Being involved with helping Kim and Linda in Outreach has been so fun! If you are

interested in helping out a bit more, we are looking for volunteers to help take on

some upcoming projects! As many of you may have heard, we have been involved

with an organization called Lisa’s Kids. This ministry provides food for about 170

families every month. Personally, I was amazed with how much food this organiza-

tion gives out. Being a part of this ministry is something we should all be proud of.

We are hoping to get Lisa to come and speak with our church to help us get a bet-

ter understanding of how we are actively changing people's lives and feeding fami-

lies in need. Be on the lookout for that event and be sure to be there to hear Lisa’s

story and how she started Lisa’s Kids.

This year was my first year ever doing Rise Against Hunger and it was so much fun!

The representative from Rise Against Hunger was so helpful and asked us an inter-

esting question. He said, “Now in 2020 with everything that has been going on like

COVID, do you think people are experiencing more hunger or less.” To be honest

I was hoping it was less. It is 2020 after all! We should be doing better with help-

ing those in need. But I was wrong. Due to COVID, many organizations have not

been able to send as much help as they have in the past creating a greater need.

When deciding if we were even going to have Rise against Hunger come to JPC,

our church decided that it was more important to help others than to worry about

COVID. This was a noble move and by the grace of God all who came to lend a

hand remained healthy. Rise Against Hunger is such a great ministry and I cannot

wait to do it again next year.

Youth group is starting this week! I am so excited to be able to get together and

learn about God with the young adults at this church! It has felt like forever since

we have been able to do anything together. Although youth group will be different

because of COVID, it will also be different because I will be leading it! We will have

to wear masks and we will not be able to eat together, but we will still be able to

hang out, have fun and learn about God. What more could you ask for?

Although I am so bummed summer has come to an end, it is spooky season! I can-

not wait to partake in fun fall activities and live in our new normal.

JPC Members that have been submitted by the Church Nominating Committee for Elders of the Class of 2023

KRISTA HANNAH has been a member of the JPC family for nearly 15 years along with her husband Fred and their son, Zack. She has served on session previously as an elder on both the Christian Education and Worship com-mittees. Krista has been active in many aspects of our church serving as both a Junior and Senior High Sunday school teacher, volunteer for VBS, chaperone for the Senior High Mission trip to Jamaica along with several trips to Montreat, and as a former member of Decided. Krista and Fred are both active members in the NC Presbyterian Pilgrimage movement, and Zack, a sophomore at NC State, was an active member of the JPC Youth and is currently active with the youth Pilgrimage movement called ARISE. Krista has served as an educator in Guilford County Schools more than 21 years. She is currently in her 11th year at Ferndale Middle School serving as an instructional coach and Math Multi-Classroom Leader where she coaches a team of math teachers and serves in many leadership roles. Krista enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going to the beach or anywhere there is water, reading, coloring/crafting, watching movies, and helping others. She is looking forward to once again serv-ing JPC as an elder in the class of 2023.

DOUG MACCOLL and his wife, Amanda, have two amazing children—daughter Avis is 9, and son Briggs is 6. They have only been official members of JPC for about a year but have been a part of the JPC family for over 7 years, and both of their children had the opportunity to attend Jamestown Presbyterian Preschool. Doug is a graduate of Furman University, and started in Sales almost 18 years ago. Over the past 15 years, he has worked in the pharmaceutical industry, and has been with Novartis Pharmaceuticals for the past 3 years. When he is not at work, he loves spending time with his family - hikes , bike rides, impromptu dance parties in the living room, or drive-in family movie nights in the driveway! When Doug was asked to serve on Session he was both honored and humbled! He said when his daughter began pre school here 7 years ago, he knew there was something spe-cial about this church and the people in it. Doug says he thanks God every day for guiding his family to JPC and it would be his great honor to serve this amazing con-gregation and help further propel this church and its ministry into the next 50 years!

RANDY DABBS earned a Biology degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. He recently semi-retired and is currently doing some consulting in food safety management. His career included Account Management at Ciba Geigy Chemicals and a Health Inspector in Public Health. His strengths include relationship building, working through challeng-ing situations, and encouraging others. Randy has been active in church and commu-nity his entire life. He has served as a church treasurer, Civitan President, and a facili-tator for a church-led divorce program for adults and children. He is dearly blessed with friends, family, 2 daughters and a granddaughter. His lovely wife is Theresa. Even amidst the pandemic erasing the 2020 season, he has accumulated 2,718 hits on the baseball/softball diamond toward his lifetime quest of 3,000 hits.

CHRIS MILLS grew up in Greenville, SC;. He grew up Catholic and went to parochial school through 8th grade. He holds a BS in Chemical Engineer-ing from Clemson University. Chris and Terri have been married 34 years and have two grown children, Katie and Patrick. Chris joined JPC in 1991 and his two earliest strong connections were the Presbyterian Men and the Bible Discovery Sunday School Class. He has been teaching that class for over 20 years. Chris is currently the Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Energy Systems Group. They do energy efficiency and renewable/resilient energy projects for Federal installations, including a lot of military bases. For recrea-tion, Chris likes all things outdoors (cycling, hiking, paddling, camping, golf, etc.) and he and Terri like to travel. He hopes to retire in the not-so-distant future and spend time with their NEW granddaughter.

They knew they found a home and joined the church. In 1980 she joined the staff as Direc-tor of Christian Education and later added Director of Afterschool. Before retiring in August 2019, she served as Associate Director of Children’s Ministry at First Presby-terian Greensboro and later as Director of Christian Education at Highland Presbyteri-an in Winston Salem. We had tons of fun on a beautiful, cool fall day playing Gaga ball, celebrating Ben Meadow’s birthday

and talking about the legend of the sand dollar. I always love when my FROGS can meet and spend

time together!

We have another great time planned on October 28th from 4:30 to 6:00. We will have a snack and

help out one of the JPC ministries by doing a service project.

I can’t wait to see you all again! I love you and so does God!

OCTOBER YOUTH NEWS!!!

We have two OFT events planned this month for combined middle and high school youth! The first is on Saturday, October 17th. We are headed to Spooky Woods! This is sure to fright and delight! The second is on Friday, October 30th...Zombie Paintball! This is a different experience than the traditional paintball you may be thinking of. We will be in a converted bus, and we will be trying to target the “zombies” as we ride on the bus. The zombies do not approach the bus or the students, so definitely a different way to paintball! Please be sure to keep an eye on your email and Instagram ac-counts for details! Not only do we have 2 OFT events, we will ALSO have a Costume Party (complete with prizes for best costume and most creative costume!) AND a fun night of carving pumpkins and fellowship! Youth group will continue to meet at the normal times, and again, no dinner at this time due to Covid. DONATIONS

October 11th is Pastor Appreciation Day! We at JPC are blessed to have 3 pastors hard at work to make our church a vibrant, caring and enthusiastic community. Each one of them has their own special skills and talents that make them a perfect fit for our

church. As you can imagine, being a pastor is not a 9:00 to 5:00 job. Many extra hours are spent with home visits, youth activities, emergency calls,

outreach opportunities, and committee meetings. We appreciate all three of our leaders, Pastor Jay Smith, Pastor Casey Riker, and Pastor Judy Fitch-ett.

Please be sure to let them know how much you love them on Pastor Appre-ciation Day, Sunday, October 11th! If you miss the 11th, do not fret. The

entire month is designated as Pastor Appreciation Month!

Pastor Casey’s Ordination We were so excited to share in Pastor Casey’s excitement and joy on September 13th at her ordination here at JPC! Pastor Casey was surrounded by her family and friends that had come from near and far to celebrate with her! The ordination was a lovely service, comprised of sever-al pastors and elders, including Pastor Jay, David Farmer and Casey’s own youth pastor from Pennsylvania, Rev. Brian Wallace, who delivered the Sermon. Following the ordination, Pastor Casey served her first Communion. David Farmer presented Pastor Casey with a beautiful green stole as a gift from the APNC. Congregational Life presented Casey with her favorite scripture in a beautiful frame. The music was wonderful as always and the entire service was very special and will be remembered by all for a long time!

Pastor Casey’s Ordination Reception Congregational Life wanted to celebrate the ordination of Pastor Casey so immediately after the ordination service people were invited to come to a reception to congratulate Casey and meet her family. Luckily it was a gorgeous fall day, and the weather cooperated beautifully. There were 3 tents set up on the Joy House lawn along the edge of the parking lot, and people walked through them to grab a cookie bag, individual bag of chips, and a bottled water or soft drink. The cookie bags looked festive, as they were tied at the top with black and gold ribbons- Pittsburgh colors since Casey is a Steelers fan. The snack tables were beautifully decorated with pots of fall colored mums and yellow fabric tablecloths. Congregational Life would like to give a big thank you to our cookie bakers. They outdid them-selves and there were many rave reviews about the great variety and flavors! Thanks to: Judy Fitchett, Jim Gonsiewski, Joanne Graham, Jane Hogan, Cheryl Jennings, Betty McCray, Joanne Miller, Clarajo Pleasants, Joanne Vitelli and Lisa Walker. We also want to thank the volunteers who helped to set up, clean up, and did jobs large and small to make the day a success: Anne Barts, Debra Catto, Chip Cromartie, Gary Fulp, Joanne Graham, Mary Brooke Guernier, Jane Hogan, Scott King, Doug Maccoll, Joanne Miller, Kim Schoepske, Jay Smith, Michelle Wentz and Anne Wright. As some of Casey’s family and friends traveled a great distance to be here for her big milestone event, that evening we served them a genuine NC BBQ dinner in the CLC. We had BBQ and buns, slaw, hushpuppies, baked beans, sweet tea, and peach cobbler with ice cream. They en-joyed the southern meal, and were appreciative of the JPC hospitality. It was a special day in our JPC history, and we appreciate all who came out to support Pastor Casey and all who helped to make the day a success!

CLERK’S CORNER

If you have ever wondered about the use of the picnic shelter, Tuesday, Septem-

ber 15 would have been a good time to come by and take a look. There was soc-

cer practice, Cub Scout meetings, and a Session meeting all scheduled for the

shelter and the surrounding area. Our shelter is being used!

Mark your calendar. There will be a Congregational Meeting on October 11. The purpose of the

meeting is to elect the Elder Class of 2023 (see info in this newsletter) and to dissolve the Associate

Pastor Nominating Committee. We need to give the APNC a big thank-you. They did a good job in

finding Casey and bringing her to JPC. Her Ordination and Installation service on September 13 was a

great service and the Session voted, at this meeting on September 15, that a copy of the form for the

Salem Presbytery Administrative Commission be entered into the official JPC Session minutes. Wel-

come, Reverend Cassandra Ann Riker.

The Re-Opening Task Force recommends that we start slowly moving back inside. No outside

groups will be allowed in the building yet, but the Session approved church meetings back inside with

the following limitations: Ten or less in room 222; Twenty-five or less in the CLC. Session also ap-

proved fifty or less in the picnic shelter but with overflow allowed spreading out around the shelter.

Masks and social distancing will be required for all activities. The Fellowship Hall is now being used as

the Food Pantry and the Sanctuary has filming equipment so these two rooms will not be used until

we can go back inside for worship ---- which we are all praying can be soon!

Committees are getting back into full swing for the JPC program year. Admin is working with the

RTF in re-opening procedures and extra COVID cleaning. Christian Education is working on plans

for Sunday School and Youth programs. Congregational Life hosted a reception and a meal for

Casey’s guests after the ordination. They are also continuing to communicate with our Grace Group

and other members who are experiencing difficult times. Connections is finding creative ways of

reaching out to Grace Group and potential new members. Outreach continues to prepare food

boxes and bags for Lisa’s Kids. Property continues to make improvements in the CLC and they are

discussing the disposition of the church buses. Resource Management is gearing up for the 2021

Generosity Campaign and continues to present positive budget reports for 2020. Worship contin-

ues to make sure we have virtual services and outdoor services.

As we start to move back inside and start our fall programs, remember that God is at work at JPC.

Thank you for your patience, your continuing financial support, your donations of food and supplies

and most of all your prayers. Say thank you when you see a Session member or one of your pastors.

We are working through some hard decisions during the pandemic. We couldn’t do without you.

Thanks for being there to support your church leaders.
