Seven Tips for Promoting a Healthy SpringBelieve it or not, it's already the month of October! Now's the time to get moving as we transition seasons. Here are seven hints to help you "spring into wellness" and the activities of Summer.

The mornings are warming up, and spring means the sun rises earlier each day. So take good advantage of this change. Get out and exercise before starting your day, whether it's going for a run or walking the dog. Exercising before work can begin your day on a high note with clarity and energy.

Proper footwear can help support an active lifestyle by providing important support for your joints. In addition, new lightweight clothing can help you manage heat and perspiration to optimize comfort when exercising. And be sure you're properly equipped before starting a new workout routine.

Spring is a great season to add new fruits and vegetables to your diet. We recommend 4.5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. These are among those that are in season during the Spring: cherries, raspberries, nectarines and plums; artichokes, cucumbers, peas, peppers, butternut and tomatoes.

It's a solid foundation and great start for any day. And make sure to partner a morning exercise routine with a healthy breakfast. You'll need energy to make the most of your fitness regimen. Instead of coffee and a quick breakfast sandwich, how about a glass of OJ and a grapefruit?

How often do you drink the recommended 64 ounces of water each day? For your body to perform at a high level, it's essential to stay hydrated. A glass of water can also be a good appetite suppressant and can help maintain a healthy weight. Try a squeeze of lemon in your water to add a bit of zest.

Strive to sleep 6-8 hours each night. Also, staying up late has been shown to increase the likelihood of overeating. Achieving proper rest will help reduce the opportunity to make bad diet decisions while preparing you for the demands of the next day.

Spring is a good time for a health tune-up. For example, before starting an exercise routine, it's always recommended to check with your primary care physician. And are there any allergy medications that need to be refilled before heading outside? When the weather turns warm and the blossoms start coming out, it's our signal to get ahead of the game for making each summer fun and rewarding. Many of the activities above can be done with friends, family and co-workers for mutual reinforcement. The can be integrated into corporate wellness programs. And it's not too early to start acquainting kids with some of these habits for a lifetime of healthy living.

Wake early to exercise. Water with a squeeze of lemon.

Update your workout attire. Proper sleeping habits help maintain a healthy weight.

Revitalize your daily fruits and vegetable.

Say "yes" to a healthy breakfast.

Schedule screenings and doctor's appointments.

World Mental Health Day 10 October

Mental health in the workplace

During our adult lives, a large proportion of our time is spent at work. Our experience in the workplace is one of the factors determining our overall wellbeing.

Employers and managers who put in place workplace initiatives to promote mental health and to support employees who have mental disorders see gains not only in the health of their employees but also in their productivity at work.

A negative working environment, on the other hand, may lead to physical and mental health problems, harmful use of substances or alcohol, absenteeism and lost productivity.

Depression and anxiety disorders are common mental disorders that have an impact on our ability to work, and to work productively. Globally, more than 300 million people suffer from depression, the leading cause of disability.

More than 260 million are living with anxiety disorders. Many of these people live with both. A recent WHO-led study estimates that depres-sion and anxiety disorders cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year in lost productivity.

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues and mobilizing efforts in support of better mental health.

• Work is good for mental health but a negative working environment can lead to physical and mental health problems.

• Depression and anxiety have a significant economic impact; the estimated cost to the global economy is US$ 1 trillion per year in lost productivity.

• Harassment and bullying at work are commonly reported problems, and can have a substantial adverse impact on mental health.

• There are many effective actions that organizations can take to promote mental health in the workplace; such actions may also benefit productivity.

• For every US$ 1 put into scaled up treatment for common mental disorders, there is a return of US$ 4 in improved health and productivity.

Creating a healthy workplace Key facts

Work-related risk factors for healthThere are many risk factors for mental health that may be present in the working environment. Most risks relate to interactions between type of work, the organizational and managerial environment, the skills and competencies of employees, and the support available for employees to carry out their work. For example, a person may have the skills to com-plete tasks, but they may have too few resources to do what is required, or there may be unsupportive managerial or organizational practices.

Risks to mental health include:• Inadequate health and safety policies;• Poor communication and management practices;• Limited participation in decision-making or low control over one’s

area of work;• Low levels of support for employees;• Lnflexible working hours; and• Unclear tasks or organizational objectives.

Risks may also be related to job content, such as unsuitable tasks for the person’s competencies or a high and unrelenting workload. Some jobs may carry a higher personal risk than others (e.g. first responders and humanitarian workers), which can have an impact on mental health and be a cause of symptoms of mental disorders, or lead to harmful use of alcohol or psychoactive drugs. Risk may be increased in situations where there is a lack of team cohesion or social support.

Bullying and psychological harassment (also known as “mobbing”) are commonly reported causes of work-related stress by workers and present risks to the health of workers. They are associated with both psychological and physical problems. These health consequences can have costs for employers in terms of reduced productivity and increased staff turnover. They can also have a negative impact on family and A healthy workplace can be described as one where workers and man-agers actively contribute to the working environment by promoting and protecting the health, safety and well-being of all employees

An academic report from 2014 suggests that interventions should take a 3-pronged approach:

• Protect mental health by reducing work–related risk factors. • Promote mental health by developing the positive aspects of work

and the strengths of employees. • Address mental health problems regardless of cause.

Key to success is involving stakeholders and staff at all levels when providing protection, promotion and support interventions and when monitoring their effectiveness.

Available cost-benefit research on strategies to address mental health points towards net benefits. For example, a recent WHO-led study estimated that for every US$ 1 put into scaled up treatment for common mental disorders, there is a return of US$ 4 in improved health and productivityhttps://www.who.int/mental_health/in_the_workplace/en/

What Is Mental Health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social

well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps

determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make

choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from

childhood to adulthood.

Mental health problems are common but help is available. People

with mental health problems can get better and many recover

completely.

Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health

problems, your thinking, mood and behaviour could be

affected. Many factors contribute to mental health problems,

including:

• Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry

• Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse

• Family history of mental health problems
