“You don’t know what this means to us”

The above statement was made by one of the residents at Inspired Living and it

was a sentiment expressed by many other residents, as well as members of the staff,

at our event on July 3. Grant Simon’s 1964 Mercury Monterey generated the most

interest (and took up the most space), while some of the residents had their pictures

taken behind the steering wheel of my 1973 Mercedes 450SL. A member of the Model

A Ford Restoration Club joined us with his 1931 Fordor Sedan which brought smiles to

many as they reminisced of better times past. Although the three cars shown were

fewer than hoped for, the spirits and enthusiasm of the residents were still high, which

made for a very gratifying experience. The delicious lunch served to us was an added

treat! Bringing pleasure and smiles to the faces of others is, in my opinion, one of the

great joys of owning and displaying antique automobiles.

The Club members will again have opportunities to display cars at

retirement/assisted living facilities. The Beach House has asked us to again put on a

show (likely in February) and we are exploring putting on a show at the Arlington

(likely in January).

Hank and Laura’s “ Ice Cream Run” was well attended on July 9 and mercifully

everyone heeded Hank’s sign cautioning about skinny dipping in his lake. For those

who were not there, I will let you guess whether we did or didn’t. We were joined by

a number of Hank’s engaging neighbors who mingled well with our members as we all

enjoyed cookies, soda and ice cream- just like we did as kids! Thanks to Hank and

Laura for your hospitality and for creating the perfect atmosphere for all to have an

enjoyable time.

Don’t forget to check your tire pressure, and happy, safe motoring!

Happy motoring! Rudy

Scams to Avoid....That time of year again

Some of our club members have been the subject of scams lately. Usually the scammer

pretends to be a Club Member and will send out an email asking for some kind of

financial assistance. Delete the email. Other scams abound, so just step away from

your phone if you get a call and avoid responding or don't go into your computer if

you get a suspicious email. Here are many that seem to be popular right now:

1. 809 and 232 Scams. Phone numbers with these area codes are from the

Dominican Republic or Sierra Leonne, respectively, and the caller will leave a voicebox

for you to respond to--If you call back, the caller will keep you on the line to rack up

large international charges...Just don't pick up the phone.

2. Free trial offer! (Just pay forever). Avoid internet offers for a free one-month trial

of some amazing product and you pay something like $5.95 for shipping and

handling. But buried in the fine print are terms that obligate you to pay anywhere

from $79-99 monthly fees forever!!

3. Hot Spot Imposter (He or She is close, real close). This might happen in an

airport or coffee shop where you log into a local WiFi "free" site. Sitting nearby is a

thief mining your computer for banking, credit card and other password info. Avoid

public hotspots, but if you do, make sure you're not set up to automatically connect to

nonpreferred networks.

4. The not-so-sweet Tweet. Pass up a "tweet" from a Twitter follower, raving about

a contest for a free iPad or some similar expensive prize. The link sets up a software

"bot" that scammers use to send spam mail.

5. Your computer is infected! (And we can help). One of the most expensive is this

scam. You click the link that runs the scam and for a fee--typically $50--the company

promises to clean up your computer. But malware is installed and your date is all of a

sudden on life support. If this window pops up, close it without clicking on any

links. Then do a full system scan using legitimate, updated software (like AVG Anti-

Virus or ThreatFire Antivirus, and other well known brands).

6. Dialing for dollars (With a ring of fraud). A text message on your cell phone from

your bank or credit card says you need to call to clear up a "problem." The scammer

wants your credit card information. This is called "smishing," and it works when you

Page 5: October 2019 - Naples Marco Region AACA · 2019-10-14 · pretends to be a Club Member and will send out an email asking for some kind of financial assistance. Delete the email. Other

are less likely to investigate the source. Real banks and stores might send out notices

but they never ask for account information.

7. We are the world (The world of charity scams, that is). A plea from a charity for

relief asks you to send a Western Union wire transfer as well as detailed personal

information--your address, SSN and checking account numbers. Right away this

should be a Turn-Off. Only donate to real charities on their own websites.

8. Utility Scams. Scammers pose as employees calling to request immediate

payment ofr they will shut off your service. Only deal with the company directly to

discuss your account; this one is easily avoided.

9. Auto-warranty Scam. ...And Car Repair Scams. The goal here is to get your

credit card information. Unsolicited phone calls should be dropped like a hot potato,

and if you want a car warranty, you should initiate the call through a reputable

company.

10. Neighbor spoofing. When someone calls from a number that has the same

initial digits as your own, and tries to get personal information or money from you, it's

very likely you are getting scammed.

11. Jury-duty scam. I haven't heard of this one...The scammer will claim to be a law

officer and there is a warrant for your arrest because you missed jury duty. You are

subject to a fine and need to pay by wiring money or using a gift card....Hard to

believe people would fall for this.... The real police never ask to have fines paid by

using a gift card.

12. Health insurance scam. A robocall will come through on your phone from a

fake health-insurance company offering a "discount card" that is not accepted

anywhere. The scammer may ask for credit card info. You can file a complaint with

the FCC if you are harassed by them.

13. FBI arrest/deportation scam. This one's easy: If the FBI is planning to arrest

you, they're not going to call first. But it can be jarring to get an official-sounding call

from a "G-Man," claiming he has a warrant for your arrest or deportation. The caller

asks to make payment in order to rescind the warrant...Probably not a situation any of

us would find ourselves in.

14. False Medicare or Social Security Advertising Claims. Non governmental

people or businesses are prohibited from advertising and making false or misleading

claims, words or emblems. They “offer” services for a fee (usually there is no fee

when dealing directly with Social Security or Medicare). If you get an email or mail

solicitation, send a copy or the mailing, plus envelope to: Office of Inspector General

Scam Hotline; Social Security Administration; P O Box 17768; Baltimore MD 21235

October is a huge month for me, AACA, The Naples-Marco Region and SW Florida in

general. I head to Hershey, PA to the AACA Eastern Fall Meet for the 48th time out of

the last 50 years.

If you read your latest AACA Magazine, you noticed that AACA is already

soliciting 2020 dues renewals. Memberships expire at the end of calendar year

2019, and the same holds true for The Naples-Marco (N-M) Region. Consider

this my first request for your renewal of $20, check payable to "Naples-Marco

Region AACA”. While you’re at it, why not pay your National AACA dues, too?

See your September/October edition of The Antique Automobile address page for

payment option details. N-M Membership is contingent on valid AACA

Membership.

Watch for local N-M Region events starting soon. And finally, welcome back

early-bird snow-birds!

Thank you for your participation in AACA and The Naples-Marco Region.

MASSACHUSETTS BILL TO EXEMPT VEHICLES 75 YEARS OR OLDER FROM ANNUAL SAFETY

INSPECTION SCHEDULED FOR HEARING

H. 3140 would exempt from the state's annual safety inspection program antique

vehicles that are 75 years old and older, registered with antique or year of manufacture

license plates, and whose owner is a member of a recognized antique car club.

H. 3140 endorses the fact that antique vehicles constitute a small portion of the vehicle

fleet and are overwhelmingly well-maintained and infrequently operated.

Overview: Legislation (H. 3140) has been introduced in the Massachusetts State

Legislature to exempt older antique vehicles from the state's annual safety requirement.

The bill is scheduled for a hearing in the Joint Committee on Transportation on

September 17th.

Sunshine

Mel informs me that Bill Britton had a heart attack in August with follow-up open heart

surgery. His email address is [email protected] and we send our “get well soon

wishes.” The Running Board took a 2 month vacation, so we are behind on much of the

latest news.....(placed in Sunshine by Patrick).

We are sad to report the passing of Robert A. (Bob) Meyers, formerly of Ann Arbor, MI,

and more recently of Bonita Springs, FL, and Frankfort, MI, who died peacefully early in the

morning of September 23 at his lakeside home, surrounded by his family. Bob was a faithful

member of AACA, always willing to share a ride in his black ’39 Buick “Mafia Staff Car”

Bob's family and friends will gather to celebrate his life next summer at the Congregational

Summer Assembly near Frankfort, MI. A smaller service will be held in Bonita Springs, FL, in

October. Instead of flowers, donations in Bob's spirit can be made to St. Joseph's Indian

School in Chamberlain, SD, or Munson Hospice in Traverse City, MI.

Thank you for your generous support of the Cars on 5th 2019. We raised over $400,000 during last year’s show. Our goal to reduce the crowd and raise more money resulted in positive feedback from all. A donation was made to St. Matthew’s House in the names of all of the car clubs that participated. We have some nice gift bag items and changes to the show planned this year. The show is set for February 8th, 2020.

History,

The following story appeared in the November, 1996, issue of the Running Board.

On September 22, 1996, the SW Florida Mustang Club held it First Annual Pony

Run. The day was sunny and the participants, which included several AACA

members, eagerly gathered at Sam's parking lot to begin the run. The entrants

lined up for the timed start and photos of the various landmarks where turns

were to be made were handed out as each entrant left the starting point. An

interesting one hour route was followed with no one getting lost and everyone

ending up at Porky's Last Stand for cold beer and good food. Three trophies

were given out as well as many door prizes and the luck of the draw. Roger

Germains and Joe Malloy received nice door prizes...The Malloys also took a 2nd

place trophy.

Journeys

The 4 Longest Roads in the U.S.

The longest is US 20. It goes from Boston to Newport, Oregon, and stretches

for more than 3230 miles. It parallels I-90 for most of its length and is one of

the most scenic routes cross-country as it goes through many national parks and

interesting cities.

Next is US 6. It runs diagonally from Provincetown, MA to Bishop, CA and is 30

miles shorter than US 20. Driving straight through, it takes 61 hours and goes

through 14 states.

Page 12: October 2019 - Naples Marco Region AACA · 2019-10-14 · pretends to be a Club Member and will send out an email asking for some kind of financial assistance. Delete the email. Other

Third on the list is I-90. This is the longest interstate and it goes from Boston

to Seattle, spanning more than 3100 miles...So much to see as it touches

Cleveland, Chicago, Madison (WI) and many of the northern national parks.

Fourth is US 30. Atlantic City, NJ is the starting point and Astoria, OR is the

ending point, covering 3072 miles. The Lincoln Highway parallels it in NE, and as

you go west, it follows the Oregon, Mormon and California trails. Philly is the

largest city you have to go through, but lots of historical things to see there.

Usually “Journeys” covers short trips, but for the more venturesome, go in your

antique....it might take all summer (the best time to travel) to get there, but they

say the time you take to do the trip is the best. I wonder if “memorable” might

be a better word. What would you do if you got stuck in the middle of

Yellowstone in your '39 Ford? Fun....
