BOOSTERTHON

Fun Run News

Boosterthon is Coming!

We are kicking off our 2018-2019 Boosterthon with a student pep rally on Oc-

tober 10! The students will enjoy getting information on this year’s theme—

Mind Spark, Mystery Lab. Mind Spark is a mystery theme that combines STEAM

skills with character building. In this science-infused character theme, the stu-

dents will team up with the Mind Spark kids to solve mysteries while learning

character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.

Boosterthon is BWE’s only fundraiser for the year. It is a fun run where students

get pledges from family and friends for each lap they run. Not only does it raise

money for our school, but it promotes fun, fitness, character and community.

Our Fun Run event is on October 19.

We are currently completing vision and hearing screens in the nurse’s office. Screen-ing will continue through the beginning of December. If your student has difficulty passing the far vision screen or the hearing screen test, a referral letter will be sent home to notify you of those results. If you receive a vision or hearing referral form, please contact your student’s doctor for a professional exam.

Please make sure that you provide your student with a change of clothing to keep in their backpack. This will cover spills, mud, and bathroom accidents that may happen during the school day. As the weather changes, consider updating the clothing to fit the season.

As we head into the beginning of flu season, please remember that all medications, including cough drops, must be signed into the clinic by an adult/parent. Students may not carry medicine to or from school at any time. This is for the safety of all of our students. If you have questions regarding medications at school, you can find all the details in the student handbook or call me anytime to discuss.

Pre-K

We are going full swing here in Pre-Kindergarten. We have learned about homes and families and are currently learning about health, including good eating habits and dental hygiene. Fire safety and folk tales will be just some of the fun Fall themes we will be exploring this month. Letter, shape, and number identification 0 - 9 will be on-going skills that will be taught throughout the year. We would like for all students to practice writing their name daily. Practice at home is highly encouraged.

We have had a wonderful start to Kindergarten! October will bring more fun and excitement as we will have our Boosterthon Fun Run and our Story Book Character Parade. This month in kindergar-ten some of the things that we will be learning about are: Fiction in our Genre Study for Language Arts, in Math we will be working with nickels, numbers 6-10 and continue counting to 100. We are excited that our Writer’s Workshop units of writing are going very well, as we are becoming writers and authors. Thank you awesome families for all of the support you have shown us so far in rein-forcing school rules and by continuing to practice letter names/sounds and sight words daily. Some other things to work on: *pencil grip, *writing their first name with only an uppercase letter (Capital) at the beginning, recognizing numbers 0-20, and tying shoes! We are so excited about having our new Bulldogs grow and excel this school year and we thank you for being our partners in your child’s education!

First Grade

First grade bulldogs, we can’t believe how quickly September flew by. October is going

to be a full month full of learning and great activities. In Math we are starting to focus

on place value and geometry. In Science we are learning about the types of energy

and how objects move. For Social Studies we are learning about maps and globes and

how they can help us in our world. For Language Arts we will be reading fiction and

non-fiction books with fall themes. We are focusing on re-telling facts and re-telling the

beginning, middle and end of stories. We will be learning to identify nouns, verbs and

adjectives. In writing we will continue with personal narratives. There are some im-

portant events happening in October like the Character Parade. This will take place on

Friday, October 5th. Start thinking about that favorite book you will bring and the char-

acter you want to be. We can’t wait to see all the great characters! Monday, October

8th is a holiday, there will be no school. Enjoy this three day weekend with your family

and friends. We are so excited to announce that the Boosterthon is back!!!! Our Fun

Run will be on October 19th. This is a great time to come together as a school for a

great cause.

We have had a wonderful start to the year! Here is a look at what we will be cover-ing in October. In reading we are working on our informational text by finding im-portant text features, main idea, and summaries. We will start our poetry unit at the end of the month. In writing, students will continue working on their personal narra-tives, or small moment stories, and then move procedural text. For social studies, we will be looking at why communities are established and how people have influ-enced the communities. In math, we are going to continue our addition and subtrac-tion unit and move into our multiplication and division unit. For science we will con-tinue looking at matter and the effects of heat and cooling. We are looking forward to the Fun Run on October 19th!

October will be a very exciting month in fourth grade full of learning and fun! In reading, we are en-joying fiction stories and identifying story elements as well as point of view and theme. Our writers are working hard on personal narratives, focusing on writing strong leads and powerful endings. In social studies, we are learning about the four regions of Texas and the Native American Indians of each region. Properties of matter and how matter changes will be the focus this month in science. In math, we are working on place value. Also, addition and subtraction with whole numbers and decimals. There are many exciting events this month as well for our Bulldogs. Our school wide sto-rybook parade is October 5th. We will be enjoying a performance by the Houston Symphony at the Cynthia Woods Pavilion to introduce our Top Dogs to the fine arts and various orchestra instru-ments on October 11th. Please join us for the Boosterthon Fun Run this month on October 19th and cheer on your Top Dog as they participate in our annual fundraiser. It is always a great time!

October will be a great month in 2nd grade! Here's a look at what we will be learning in the coming weeks. In reading, we will explore making connections with fictional text. In writing, we will begin working on imaginative stories. In math, we will count coin combinations up to $1.00 and explore number patterns up to 999. 2nd grade scientists will combine materials to build structures and get energized learning about the 3 different types of energy: light, heat, and sound. In social studies, we will study geography, specifically the continents and oceans, plus local, state, and national gov-ernments.

Music is humming along as we head to the month of Oc-tober. All classes have been working on rhythm, steady beat, echo, moving around the room and bubble spac-es. We have also been working on drum circles using the tune "Yankee Doodle." All grade levels marched to the tune and played instruments such as drums, tambourines, woodblocks, triangles, maracas, bongos and bells. A reminder that the fourth grade students are working on their upcoming program. Their program will be a patriotic theme and presented on Thursday evening, November 8th. More details will be sent out in October. The choir

will be performing the Veteran's Day program on Friday morning, November 9th. More details to choir parents sent out in October.

In art we are working on a fall pumpkin project. Each grade level has painted paper to make pumpkins out of. This has allowed us to review the elements of color (warm/cool, primary/secondary, and tints/shades), line, texture, value, space, and shape! We love projects that incorporate so many important elements and techniques.

Soon we will begin to work on our annual Western Art project. We are looking at new projects for grade levels and can’t wait to see how they turn out.

LIBRARY "Fall into a Great Book" during the month of October! During library time, I will be introducing students to our Bulldog Bingo Reading Program which will run October 1, 2018-February 1, 2019. Students in Grades Kinder-4th Grade are invited to read books of various types and record their reading on their grade level Bulldog Bingo Reading form. For each Bingo earned, students will bring their Bingo cards to the library to be viewed by Mrs. McDonald. Each Bingo will earn a special Scratch-n-Sniff Bookmark and a chance to win a FREE book from our November and/or March Book Fairs. Note: Book Titles may only be used ONE time on the Bulldog Bingo card. Titles and parent initials must be on the title form in order to receive a Bingo. Readers need to be sure book titles represent the category listed in each Bingo box. Second, Third and Fourth Grade readers are also invited to participate in our Reading Bookmark Challenge! The BWE Library has 8 new Reading Bookmarks for students to record their reading of books from the same genre or reading category. Similar to our Bulldog Bingo, readers can return a Reading Bookmark for a special Scratch-n-Sniff Bookmark and a chance to win a FREE book from our November and/or March Book Fairs. The Reading Bookmark Challenge will run October 1, 2018-February 1, 2019. Finally, all students are invited to participate in our Emoji-nal Reading Reviews. In our library windows, students and teachers have been writing book reviews to share by connecting with characters and the emotions shared by the author. Once a student has read and reviewed 5 books, the student can earn a free kid's meal from Red Robin. Red Robin coupons will be awarded while supplies last. Note: To earn a kid's meal coupon, students must read and review 5 books on their own -- teacher reviews done as a class are not a part of our Red Robin program. Book reviews must share one complete sentence that includes the emotional connection word made with the story to qualify for our Emoji-nal Reading Review. Reading Re-view Example: The boy and girl were angry when the Cat and the Hat messed up their house when their parents were not home. After the parade, grade levels will enjoy special activities sponsored by your classroom teachers before our Early Release Dismissal. Finally, your family is invited to celebrate books by participating in our 10th annual Storybook Pumpkin Patch. As a family, decorate the pumpkin for display in the Birn-ham Woods Storybook Pumpkin Patch. Pumpkins must look like a favor-ite book character. Halloween pumpkins will not be placed on display in our Story-book Pumpkin Patch.To decorate—use paper, glue, paint, markers, pipe cleaners, fabric, or other craft items. PLEASE DO NOT CUT OR POKE HOLES IN THE PUMPKINS!!!!! Bring your child’s decorated storybook pumpkin to the Birnham Woods Library Monday, October 22 by 9:00 a.m. Please label your pumpkin with your child’s name, the name of your child’s teacher, the storybook character's name, and the title of the book. Pumpkins will be displayed in the library October 22-26. Be sure to visit the Storybook Pumpkin Patch throughout the week. If you would like to have your storybook pumpkin back at the end of the week, you will need to pick it up by 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 26. Pumpkins left after 1:00 p.m. will be sent to the classroom.
