Giving in Gratitude

Gratitude Sunday, October 28 - VIDEO As part of the sermon message on October 28, we will show a series of short video clips (of about 60 seconds each) where people from

St. Matthews are invited to answer the following question:

I am grateful to God for ________. We will be recording these videos in the Eckdahl Room

October 7, 14, & 21 after worship. We hope you will share with us your gratitude to God.

F ive years ago when I arrived here, St. Matthews was ending a three

year commitment of sharing $36,000 with Resurrection Lutheran, Channahon. This act of generosity was one of your qualities that attracted me to be the pastor here. Our Today and Tomorrow Fund still had over $5800 which in 2015 we shared with other new congregations. This included Open Arms Lutheran, Rockton, in the amount $1802. Later we also shared $300 with them in a tithe from a bequest we received. Recently Open Arms merged with Cross and Crown Lutheran, Roscoe. Since they use the Cross and Crown building, they opted to use the Open Arms baptismal font.

As the veneer is coming off our St. Matthews font, our leaders voted to accept the gift of one of the fonts from Cross and Crown (Open Arms) which is in better condition than our almost 65 year old font. On October 14 our historic font will be placed in the Sharer Room for the time being, and in worship on October 14 we will dedicate the baptismal font shared with us.

Generosity begets even more generosity. (We gave to them. They gave to us.) The measure you give is the measure you get.

In Gratitude, in Christ,

Pastor Scott Schmidt

Lutheran World Relief

Our 2018 Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Ingathering has drawn to a close. Again St. Matthews has given great support. We gathered 118 School Kits, 31 Personal Care Kits, 41 Baby Care Kits, 9 Fabric Kits and 2 boxes of soap. The Quilters did a super job with making and tying 109 quilts. Special thanks to Sara Redner and Linda Wallace who work with us and are guests of St. Matthews.

Also thank you’s go to the quilters that help put the quilts out on Quilt Sunday and then pack them for shipping. Thank you to Marilyn Haslam for her unending sewing of all the school backpacks, many items for our baby kits, fabric kits and a goodly number of quilts. I also thank her for being a great help to me in getting supplies and helping organize things. A thank you to Marilyn Eckberg for finding good used baby clothing at the Closet. Thank you to Tommy Rose for delivering the boxes to Rockford. Thank you to Pastor Scott for your help and support throughout. And thank you to St. Matthews for your giving to the kits and for the monetary gifts to help send these items out into the World.

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK

Blood pressure check will be October 21 at 10:15 am in

the Sharer Room.

The Closet –CWU

Once again we are making a plea for volunteers for The Closet. Jobs include sorting clothes, toys, books, and housewares, hanging clothes on racks, cashiering, and bagging for cashiers. If you are able to give an hour or more a week or only help out during certain seasons. All but two of us are volunteers and can take off whenever needed.

The Closet has been giving close to $120,000 per year to numerous organizations in Bureau County such as, Freedom House, Second Story, Princeton Ministerial Association, Buddy Bags, and food pantries to name just a few. We are only able to do so with the help of our shoppers and volunteers. It is an amazing service offering very reasonably priced items to all who enter.

Marilyn Eckberg Church Women United

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED BLOODMOBILE Thursday, November 1 at First United Methodist from 11 am to 6 pm. St. Matthews will provide 20 dozen sandwiches. A signup sheet will be out to help.

4th Annual Spaghetti Supper is a success!

Saturday, September 22 was a very busy day at St. Matthews. The Spaghetti Supper started serving at 4:30 pm and had a constant flow of diners until 7:00 pm. All volunteers were on their feet and moving around either cooking, serving or cleaning up from start to finish.

Thank you to the congregation for your generous support of this ministry. The donations of time and talents (baking and crafts) was overwhelming. Thank you to all of the bakers, the cookies, brownies and bars were delicious and everyone enjoyed them. Thank you to those who donated items for our “Silent Auction”. Thank you to our quilters for the generous donation of the quilt that was raffled off that evening. Susie Bishop was the winner of the quilt. These two extras helped us add more funds for Second Story. And most of all thank you to all who turned out to have dinner. Without you the dinner would not have been a success.

After a bit of rest we will look forward to our 5th Annual Spaghetti Supper.

Kathy Waca, Pam Clementz, Terry Rapp, Barb Miller,

Pastor Scott Schmidt, Teri Schlindwein, Jeannine May,

Chris & Kathryn Nesbitt.

Youth and Family Ministry Corner I am reminded daily that it is not my plan that I am carrying out, but God’s plan. With the heat for Rally

Day we decided it was best to bring the cake walk inside. My plan of having outdoor games was no longer, but we were grateful for our wonderful air conditioning! We had a wonderful turnout for our Youth and Family Rally Day! When one of the church’s events makes my daughter Grace’s school journals I am thankful that the Lord was working through me. I am reminded again that this is my purpose. I am here to share God’s great works. I am grateful to all who participated and made donations to help in Rally Day’s success. Thank you to all who donated gifts for our cakewalk!

I am so blessed that I get the opportunity to share in fellowship with the youth and family of our parish. My heart was full looking around during our potluck after Rally Day. It was neat seeing the “church family” that Samantha Buelvas has reminded me of having. We are the “body” to which the Bible refers. We need each of us to make this year a success. I look forward to the many other memories my church family and I will make together.
