Highlights from September September began on a beautiful note with classical music. Each day we were inspired by different great composers: Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin. The Center participants also explored Phantom of the Opera.

The month was filled with wonderful entertainment, afternoon

strolls, hugs, funny jokes, Peace Day activities, and Disney Day Fun Facts and Films.

Senior Wellness Programs GAP Geriatric Assessment Program-a free medical assessment program for senior adults 60 years of age and older. The 2 hour assessment includes memory screening and mood scale, medication review, nutrition review, eye sight screening, function/fall risk assessment and medical assessment. GAP clinic includes a Geriatric Physician, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker and Nurse. GAP addresses Caregiver concerns and can also provide/renew adult day care annual physicals. There are 3 modules of the Be Well Series covering information on Nutrition, “Chasing the Blues Away” and Sleep. OWN YOUR OWN MASTERPIECE Proceeds from the purchase of art work, calendars or cards help fund art supplies and other specialties at the Adult Day Care Centers of Las Vegas & Henderson.

We have Tai Chi/ Chi Kung & Yoga Classes. Tai Chi/Chi Kung & Yoga are a combination of choreographed seated or standing movement, sound vibrations and guided meditations. These practices promote healing and relaxation by releasing negative emotions such as worry,

anxiety, grief and anger. Wednesday night is Caregiver Yoga !

GETTING SCENT-IMENTAL The October scent of “Pumpkin

Spice” is actually a combination of Cinnamon, Ginger, Clove, Nutmeg & Allspice. Jamaica Pimenta is another name for Allspice. A native plant of the Caribbean Antilles, Allspice was

transported to Europe as early as Columbus’ second Journey in 1493. The name was coined by the English in 1621 because its scent seemed to be a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. It’s oil is used as an inhaler to calm the sinus or topically (diluted) for sore muscles.

DID YOU KNOW? Pumpkins are a member of the gourd family, which includes cucumbers, honeydew melons, cantaloupe, watermelons and zucchini. These plants are native to Central America and Mexico, but now grow on six continents. The largest pumpkin pie ever baked was in 2005 and weighed 2,020 pounds but the heaviest pumpkin weighed over 1,810 pounds! Pumpkins are low in calories, fat, and sodium and high in fiber. They are good sources of Vitamin A, Vitamin B, potassium, protein and iron.

FREE CAREGIVING WORKSHOPS

Ingredients: ½ lb. purple potatoes (about 5-6)

½ cup crème fraiche or sour cream

¼ cup chopped chives

1 Tbsp. chopped dill

2 Tbsp. prepared horseradish

chopped black olives

Dill fronds for decorating

Black pepper

Salt

Directions:

Bring water to boil in a large saucepan. Salt the water and add unpeeled potatoes. Reduce heat and cook until potatoes are fork tender, yet firm, about 10-15 minutes depending on size of potatoes. Drain and cool.

Mix the crème fraiche with the chives, dill, horseradish, black pepper and salt.

Cut potatoes into 3/8 – inch thick slices. Skewer two together for effect, or leave individual. Top each potato slice with a dollop of crème fraiche, the pepper round, another small dab of crème fraiche, then black olives on top. Slide a dill frond at the corner of each “eye.” Serve cold.

Meet the Staff Genie Dawson, LPN NURSE /ADC-LV Nurse Genie was raised in Dayton, Ohio and lived most of her life in Southern California with her husband and 3 children. Genie has always cared for others. She volunteered as a young girl as a candy striper at a local hospital and later worked as a personal care aide, pharmacy assistant and continued working on her nursing degree while raising her children. She spent most of her career caring for older adults and adults with disabilities in a skilled nursing centers. Genie loves working at the day care center and her bubbly personality makes her a great new addition to the “family”. Genie’s youthful energy also helps her stay in touch with her 7 grandchildren! Welcome Genie!
